Good Video - For a EDC weapon, a 6 MOA red dot is PERFECT. Nothing else is needed! We are not trying to hit a target at 100 yards with a pistol, so grab the 407K, install it and practice with it....The End
I haven't ever used a smaller dot but I have noticed a slightly annoying (not unusable) flare with my 6 moa Holosun 407k. I have the green reticle. I've heard the smaller reticles are better at not flaring up so bad. Not to say the 6 moa dot is baaaad. But it does flare a bit.
I bought the 407K, however I underestimated how my astigmatism would impact on how I view the dot. I have tried lubricating eye drops and I still see starbursts. I wish there was a way to improve this area. Normally I have decent vision. I wear prescription glasses, but I can see well without glasses. I’ve been considering upgrading to a 507K in green.
First red dot for me - 507k - I wanted the circle first (for comfort) but over time as I trained, moved toward the dot. - Great little optic. Clear enough with minor refraction (almost unnoticeable) and a great introduction to dots - MUST TRAIN WITH THE DOT! - Dont expect yourself to acquire the dot every time you present until you've trained enough. - Long live the Republic!!!
For a rifle, I like the "donut of death" reticle with small dot when shooting at longer distances. For a handgun, I just want a dot that's easy to pick up quickly under stress, as engagement distances are typically shorter. The 407K green dot allows me to get quick, accurate hits under less-than-ideal conditions. YMMV.
If you want to focus on defensive shooting, you want the bigger reticle for speed. Get the 507k for the circle dot combo defensive use, then switch to the 2 MOA dot for competition and super accurate shooting.
@@tx_reaper5973 Yes thats why I said what I said? 32 MOA is bigger than 6 MOA, but 2 MOA gives you the option to be very precise if needed. 507k is vastly superior if you want defensive use. Idk if youre agreeing with me or not...
A good reason to go with the 507k over the 407k is if you have an astigmatism. a 2moa will look better than a 6moa for us Astimies. Dots already look bigger to us due to the fuzzy bursts and flares we get when using dots. So the smaller the better.
I don't have a 507k but have an Aimpoint Acro P1 on my Wilson Combat, it has a 3.25 MOA dot. I have a 407k on my 365XL. Practically I find the 407k easier to shoot, I pick up the dot faster, it doesn't shake as much so I'm not trying to fight myself to hit that perfect shot, it just appears a lot more stable. If it was a precision rifle, sure I'll take the smaller dot, but for a concealed carry handgun for myself I prefer the bigger dot. As for accuracy, my groups at 25 yards are about .5 inches larger with 407k, but you could also attribute that to the Wilson Combat which is leaps above and beyond the sig in terms of accuracy. In reality I can get center mass hits at 100 yards with my 365XL and the 407k so practical effectiveness with a handgun it makes zero difference. I guess in the end it's personal preference.
Great video. I run an RMR w/6.5 dot, Holosun 507c X2 and prefer the dot. I thought initially I’d like the circle/circle dot but not when I shot. That’s why I went the 407k for my G43. I also run a 507c ACSS Green and hands down the ACSS is my favorite, the chevron rocks.
2yrs later and still informative. Just got into red dots, so I’m a bit ignorant on its use. None the less just set up my Glock 43x with a 407k. Thanks for vid!
Getting older I have switched over to red dots on most of my guns versus iron sights. I recently paired the 507K green dot with a S&W M&P 9 3”, and the comment on amount of feedback is spot on. I wanted something that honed in on the target and I went with the 2MOA. While this does give me more feed back, the thing I felt was worth the extra few dollars were the option. I feel the outer ring plus dot does tend to overwhelm the target, but the option to switch between the dot and ring is where the value is. I’m still working out what I like best for a permanent setting, but I’m sticking with the 2MOA for now. Best to all.
I have a 507k on my P365X and 407k on my G43x MOS and for sure I prefer the 407k, and the reason is simple- it's a bigger dot so I can find it quicker and has less feedback therefore I shoot faster and more accurate. I think it is because the small dot move so much I take more time aligning the dot on the target. Just like her I never use the big circle or the dot with the circle so I wished I had purchased the 407k instead. just my 2 cents on the matter.
6 moa is definitely more for a carry firearm. It’s more in your face and up close for those close quarters situations. The smaller 2 moa I see it more for a large “fighting” size pistol for competitions or just for more distance shooting. They’re both great dots just depends on what platform and what purpose you want to use it for. But of course you can use either one for self defense, to each their own and that’s the beauty of the hobby/lifestyle
Damn youre killing the game out here!! The last 3 videos I have looked up you have been the first result on. Enigma then the 365 and now the holosun! From the looks of it your carry game is on lock. Will definitely be subbing for more!
I bought the 407k for my G-48 mos for two reasons: One it's about a $100 cheaper like you said and second I have an astigmatism and the bigger dot is less distracting, rounder, not as starburst. It just looks better most of the time. Although I do have a 507c and it looks pretty good not as round, dot like as the 407k but still plenty usable.
Thanks, Tessa. I found your comments particularly helpful. I’m new to dots so I don’t have any practical experience. But, given your description, I would probably just opt for the single dot function and probably not use the other two on the 507K. So, the 407K might just be the best choice for me initially, especially given the price difference.
Personally I prefer the 507K though I agree the 407K is a great option. It would be interesting to see if ACSS would carry over the Vulcan reticle to the K series dots for folks getting into carry dots.
For the money, I think the 407k-GR is one of the best you can buy. Don't need anything else on a subcompact. You should do a review on the comfort concealment belt vs the Enigma. I haven't seen any reviews on that belt yet and it looks like it would be more comfortable than the strap that the enigma comes stock with.
I thought about the Dremeling of the post, and thought to myself, What's the worst that can happen? I would have to buy a new slide. That being said, I did Dremel down the 2 rear post flat to surface. The front 2 post I Dremeled down about half way beause there are 2 notches under the 507k2 to seat the front 2 post. After that I shaved down the Right screw about 4 or 5 threds as to not let it interfere with the Firing pin mechanism, You will want to make sure you shaved down enough threads before placeing Lock Tight. 10 minutes later:::: I now have a co-wittnessed 507K2 with Stock Glock sights and NO ugly plate. Holoson sits Low in the Saddle "ON THE SLIDE", (not a plate) like a optic should.. Very pleased with results and had no issues.
Excellent comparison describing a larger 6 MOA sized dot and the selections available in the 507k. My new optic ready M&S9 Performance Center Shield Plus (4” ported) arrives with the Crimson Trace CTS-1500 5 MOA. Now, when I upgrade it to a stronger/clearer Holosun, your concise explanation of the difference between the features of the 407k and 507k will give me a better understanding toward a decision best suiting my desired style reticle choice to make. In the mix was the new SCS, but it is too long and only configured beginning with Glock MOS, and the new EPS Carry with its 407k/507k footprint, that overhangs my slide’s sides too much for my liking. I predict the HE507K-GR X2 will be my Goldilocks pick that’s just right.
VERY well done! Your descriptions were excellent. I liked your impartiality. My bad 63 year old eyes have already had cataract surgery and now I have glaucoma! Those issues make me need the six M.O.A. dot. It works great on my Equalizer. Thanks again and remember to always protect those beautiful eyes when practicing! Vince
I feel much better now, just bought the mos 23 and picked up the hs407k with the 60 dollar dpp plate. I saved myself 100 bucks because the dot is gonna be good enough for me. Nice right to the point video. Good job young lady.
I'd recommend trying just the circle (without dot) on the 507K. It'll limit that jittery feedback, while still providing an accurate reticle, that allows for good field of view.
Awesome video, hit most of the major points. One thing I’d also add is, larger dots are less sensitive to light condition changes so I find myself messing with the settings less even though I prefer the smaller dots. That’s why I went 407k on my 43x. Now that there’s also a 407k with a green dot, that would honestly be my go to for a carry gun because of that. Competition though, smaller 1moa dots all day long
Not trying to disagree with you here at all because i think there's a lot of personal preference in what dot people prefer but i think most competitive shooters are using 6 moa dots.
@@mnman8511 many are, many have also switched to smaller dots. Dot size is 100% preference. The only reason I don’t go smaller on carry guns has to do with not wanting to need to adjust to compensate for lighting changes like you can run in to with smaller dots. Competition I get a sight picture to confirm my dot brightness before hand, carry and work, I don’t.
I like the circle with the dot. It’s like my eotech on my AR… pick up target quicker in my opinion.. if you put the circle on someone that means the dot is there too.
I have dot sights on handguns from Holosun, Sig, Swampfox & Vortex. For my old eyes (and astigmatism), the 6MOA 407K & Vortex Venom are much easier to see. Notably more so if I do not have corrective lenses for whatever reason. Good video. I was looking for just this comparison as I require an optic for a Shadow Systems CR920 I picked up this weekend. One note: the MOA size of the circle on the 507K would be helpful. No biggie. I'll look it up. Keep up the good work!
** Thank you for sharing your unique and insightful perspective on the subject of red dots. Your contribution is greatly appreciated and adds a fresh dimension to my understanding of this topic **
I have the 507k in green, but I leave it in circle dot mode with the brightness tuned down. Mine is mounted on a DPP dovetail tail and has been solid so far. No milling option on my XD slide.
i have the 407k green dot right now but soon will upgrade to the 507k. i prefer the 32 moa circle without the dot. i think it will be much quicker for my eyes to pick up and once i get it zero'd in, it will be faster to aim and shoot with the bigger circle.
I don't care for the circle and I thought a 6 moa would be best for my EDC. Also went a little crazy and got green. The 407k replaced a Romeo Zero (hated the button location) on my P365XL. Couldn't be happier.
Excellent information as always. Brought my wife to the range and she tried about 7 carry guns and we both shot the glock 48 very well. I personally prefer the smallest dot possible, with my favorite being a trijicon sro with a 1 moa dot. (My competition rig)
Great video comparing these two optics, I am personally leaning towards the 407k of the two because I don't really care for the circle dot myself. I have a P365X on layaway so I am excited to check out your video on that one and see what you think about it. Not gonna lie this was the first video of yours that I have seen and the thumbnail was just the picture of the two optics so I was a little surprised when you came on screen. I will be checking out more of your content as it is harder to find concealed carry content that is more helpful to my wife as we both journey into the world of CCW.
I have the p365x as well and I'm not very familiar with the two. Looks like I'm kinda leaning towards the 407k. Not sure about the green vs red dot tho. Which would be better?
@@eyang7 so currently I am running the HoloSun EPS Carry 6MOA Red dot because it is fully enclosed. But, having compared the green and red K size dots I'd recommend trying to see both colors in person as it really varies which you will prefer. Generally speaking the green dot will have a slight reddish tint to the window and the red will have a slight bluish tint. Both dots resolve well but personally I prefer the red to the green.
Awesome video! short but detailed and you even gave some great personal thoughts on the differences that definitely helped me consider each sight and it's attributes. Definitely subscribing! RU-vid needs more videos like this.
Something I see not mentioned in any video I've watched is if your firearm platform requires an adapter plate which will mean the dot will be sitting slightly higher on the slide. The 407k has 30moa elevation adjustment available and the 507k has 50moa elevation adjustment available. Depending on your intended zero that extra 20moa could make a difference especially if you are using a CH Precision adapter plates. Lesson learned and hopefully saving someone else grief.
@@BeardedBanditoOfficial without the machined post seated onto the red dot locater dimples or a custom cut recess where the red dot is captured with contact front and back all of the recoil slide energy and returning to battery forces will be transferred to the mounting bolts. In applications where larger tapped holes are present it may not be an issue but on an m&p shield not something I would trust
I've used a 407K X2 on my Hellcat OSP for two years and have gotten very proficient with it. I like the single dot, and I grew used to the 6 MOA size. My first gun was a Glock 19 Gen 3, with standard Glock night sights, and I was proficient, but not a marksman by any means, so I sent the Slide out to be machined for a Holosun 407c (RMR footprint), knowing it was Holosun's optic for that size pistol, and that it had a 2 MOA dot. I've begun to adjust to the 2 MOA dot, it's more precise, but I get what you mean by too much feedback - I moves noticeably with every hand movement. It's causing me to firm up my grip, a good thing. I love Holosun, I tried every brand a local store had at the time, except RMR, they were too expensive at the time, and the Holosun won by a country mile. two years and 5,000 rounds later on the Hellcat, I just changed the battery as a preventartive, it actually was fine, it's still crisp and clear and after an email to Holosun taught me to get gunk out of the emitter opening, just as sharp. Great products.
I feel like the intention of the ring is to provide an even larger optic foot print for shooting. Ultimately this comes down to shooter preference. This video was super informative as usual. Tysm
If you are on the fence about a dot I really suggest you go for it, having a dot on at least one gun for dry fire is a big help. Reason being is that a dot will tell you things that irons won't...it will tell you that the shots a going to trend in a direction and then let you chase that rabbit down. PS. A dot will also punish bad presentation, and drive you to improve in almost every aspect. Maybe that's just me though...kinda a dog with a bone when it comes to stuff like this. But seriously I would recommend picking up an optics ready pistol that interests you and grabbing an optic for it, and if it doesn't work out you can always sell it and pop a plate back on.
I got the 407K-GR green dot installed on my M&P shield plus PC 3.1 (short barrel). Fit and finish is very nice, no side overhang. The downside I probably got a bad unit. The battery drains even when not in use and in storage. I RMA’d it with Holosun hoping for a good replacement.
I’ve used dots on rifles for years just due to ease of acquisition. (Eyes still work well enough for rifle irons) Never have used a pistol with one, but nowadays the eyes aren’t working as well with pistol irons so putting some serious consideration to moving into a pistol dot. I’m kind of point shooting now as I can’t get ahold of that front sight. (Arms have grown too short) As a first timer, I’m really leaning into the 507 as from the outside it seems nicer to be able to get ahold of that big circle, and with experience be able to move into the dot, or not depending on how it works out.
I was not prepared for you to discuss these optics. I am sorry if I'm offensive, I don't want to be but, you look like the best 3 gun champion on your high school cheerleading squad ahahaha. You're probably a way better shot than I am so let that be said. Thanks for a great and informative video because I have asked this very question w/o being able to answer it. Glad someone addressed this topic.
On a small defense pistol, I'd go with the 407K green dot. My wife has a 507C with Vulcan reticle on her G17. It's steady, maybe due to it's larger size, 10 MOA across the chevron. (I just wish it were green.) We also have a 403C with 2 MOA dot-only on a rifle, which is good for static shooting at distance. I'd prefer a circle-dot for faster, closer shooting.
I run the 507k on a Max9 and keep it on the circle dot on low intensity. Most encounters are going to be close range so I prefer the circle dot. Besides, my eyesight is not what it use to be so the circle helps acquire the target. The only thing that bothers me with it is having to press both those little buttons at the same time to turn it off. Other than that is has been great.
I have several red dots. I bought a 407k for my Canik TP9SC, I tried to save money, but I don’t like the big 6moa dot. I like the 2moa dot on my Idpa gun. If I could do over, I’d buy the 507k.
Thanks for the video. I’m looking for a micro red dot for my G48, I really like the 507c on my G19. I also use the dot setting more than the circle, so I think the 407k would be a better option for me.
I'm leaning towards milling my 43x non MOS, since cheaper iron sight adapter alternatives mean the optic will sit taller on the slide, defeating the purpose of a compact edc. Currently deciding whether to request an RMSc footprint - which brings me to my dilemma of choosing between tighter budget Swampfox Sentinel or the Holosun (407 or 507k). Dagnamit decisions
So my experience has been interesting. I own both the 407k and the 507k both in red. I did try the 507k in green as well. I have an astigmatism, and that plays a major factor on what worked for me. The Green reticle does not work for me at all, my eyes cannot focus on it and it just flares. The red versions, for my eyes at least, are very clear and easy to pick up. Now with that being said, I am experiencing some flaring in my eyes from the 407k as the larger dot just spiders out more. The 507k I don't have this issue as much due to the smaller dot size. I also can see the circle really clearly, so I tend to leave it on the circle/dot option. The 407k is new to me, and I think it will work out but I definitely prefer the 507k. Just putting this out there for others based on my experience with my eyes. Everyone is different, so please look at these in person if you can. They are very quality optics, and I will absolutely buy more Holosun products. I have a 507C as well on a range pistol that is fantastic. I think my next will be the EPS Carry multi reticle, that looks really great especially with the solar feature. A little pricier, but that closed emitter looks nice.
I am still deciding on the 407k or the 507k for the Shield Plus 2.0 - just because the pistol is a good carry pistol but I am deciding also on price. You helped me think about it even more of the differences with each.
Of the two I prefer the 407k. If I use a 507 series I use them circle only. Quicker than the dot and no real world loss of accuracy out to 25. Of the bigger holosuns I think the 407co is unbeatable
While some may like the larger/simpler 6 moa dot of the 407 for deliberate range/target shooting, the larger circle on the 507 will be MUCH quicker to get on target during a high stress closer range self-defense scenario.
I have both and I would have just bought the 407k twice if that was an option when I got them. The new EPS enclosed models look like they will be the best option for micro pistol optics.
Great info that I need right now thank you. Just picked up a shield plus optics ready and my RMRcc doesn't fit which bummed me out. I've been hesitant to get a Holosun but your perspective is what I've been looking for. Grabbed a 507k on sale. I'll look for a black friday 407k then wifey will have her choice and I'll get what's left. Lol.
You’ll have to modify the slide for the Holosun too, but not as much. The Shield slide has 4 mounting posts and two holes, the back posts have to be ground off and the front ones have to be ground down to take the Holosun. Otherwise, the options are limited to a bunch of optics that really don’t seem durable. I also have a 507K and a Shield plus, the slide is out right now getting the mod, luckily, it’s pretty inexpensive to have it done.
@@kubastepniak5123 normally I might try this myself but I just moved and a lot of my tools and equipment are still in storage. I sent the slide in and had a company that does slide milling take down the posts. They had it done in a couple days and it cost $25 plus shipping.
I did it myself, had a access to milling machine and was not difficult at all. Front ones take more time and fitting , but come out nice . I used 6-32 1/2 “ long screws and blue loctite . Should hold strong .
Thanks for the rundown! Still on irons with my p365, but in my Phlster Pro Series I can drop in the longer p365 XL that’s cut for optics without changing my carry at all! #goals
Right now the 407co is on sale for less than 200 bucks. It's my favorite with the circle with my stigmatism. Only way it could be better if it was in green.
Thanks again for another great video! Even though I had previously seen this video I wanted to revisit it since I had an opportunity to try out a holosun 407k GREEN dot with a simulator yesterday. I have had my mind set on getting the 507K because it’s always good to have options, right? 😂 After trying out the GREEN I absolutely fell in love. I’m sure the larger dot doesn’t hurt either. I may be leaning towards the 407 now. 🤪
Great review! I'm fixing to send my 43X slide off to the Glockstore to have it milled for an MOS and having them mount a 507K. It'll be my first red dot so I'm really looking forward to running the 43X with it. Keep up the great work!
Save you're money bro. Sell or trade in your 43x and buy a 43x mos. You'll have more $ in your 43x with a new slide purchase, then what a 43x mos cost and you still won't have a rail mounting point.
@@roycelabor4339 no problem bro! I have a 48 and I wanted a 43 slide with rmr cut. Until I realized that slide will be over $250. A g43xmos is 600-650 tops
Looks like 407k also has built in rear sights but no solar power backup. My 507k doesn’t have a rear sight built in. Enjoyed the review. Im new to red dots. Probably watched over 50 videos on red dots.
I used to live near Conroe, TX. I worked at the Starbucks on 336 in front of the home depot. So miss the kolaches from a couple doors down. Galloway precision has an optic mount plate that will work with my pistol.
Do you carry for self defense? Do you wear glasses? If your glasses fell off in a self defense situation, would you be able to quickly find the dot to acquire a sight picture? Next time you go to the range take your glasses off and try it. I personally have problems seeing just a dot, but have no problems at all immediately finding that 32 MOA circle and quickly getting a sight picture. And in the video, that circle is deceptively small. It appears considerably bigger in your hand.
As a marksmanship instructor in a previous life (Navy), I heard you say something alarming. I heard you say more "feedback" is a good thing (3:40). You also referred to your sight picture being shaky as "feedback". Please understand that is just not correct. A steady hand and sight picture is what is desirable. There are many reasons to pick the 407 vs the 507, price is just a minor factor. bigger dots are easier to get on target at closer ranges (point of aim is best for quick or snap shooting up to around 10' +/-) then when your target gets smaller say around 10 yrds or 30', the big dot covers around 2" where the smaller dot covers around 11/16". So the farther away you plan to shoot the smaller dot you need to shoot more accurately. The other major consideration is if you have an astigmatism, the 407 is best as it is easier to see. Oh yeah, why not mention red vs green dot? Please understand I am just frustrated with false information being disseminated as fact. It is great to have real women in this sport and with the mindset that they can protect themselves, it's empowering to them I'm sure.
I have a green 407k. Why? Cause I got it for $200 and couldn’t pass it up. My brother has the red 507k. I prefer my 407 because the larger dot is easier to find when drawing for concealment for time. And at 25 yards (the furthest we shoot outdoors), you’re not outshooting 6 MOA. Cheers
It would have been nice to get some commentary on the different settings. It's the main difference between the two. As you said... the experience is not very different outside the circle settings.
I bought a Glock 43x and put a 507k on it. i struggle to find the dot with that optic and am significantly slower than just using irons on my Glock 19. wasn’t really feeling red dots on a pistol, until i went to Cabelas one day. figured i’d check out the p365xl since i’d never held one. liked it, but what i really liked was the Romeo that was on it. it had the 6 moa dot and i was instantly able to find that dot every time. i’m thinking i might need to swap my 507k for a 407k.
very possible the grip angle is not helping you on the Glock. Some find the dot easier on Sigs simply because the angle of your wrist is more natural when pointing, not the best to control the higher bore axis recoil but maybe thats something to look into.
I’ll stick with the 507k. You can be just as fast with it as you can with the larger 6moa. Just a different learning curve. But that’s what works for me. Civilian side of me says, buy what you are comfortable with. Army side of me says, buy what you’re gonna need.
