I’ve finally done it! After your many requests over the past year, I have finally come up with an archaeology book recommendation list! This has been a challenging one, let me tell you. This list took me so long to make because I wanted to make sure it was well rounded, that the sources were credible, and that they would actually be useful to you guys.
And after many headaches, from a few books in particular, I finally came up with a top 10 list of books on archaeology that you should read if you want to learn more or get started in the field. Some of these may be on your reading lists in university, many of them will not be, but I came up with the list that I did because it’s got a wide variety of topics, and they will all help you go further into understanding archaeological terminology, developments and thought processes. Some are time period or subject specific, while others are just good general volumes.

This is my first time watching any of your videos and I thought it was great. I got a Bachelor's in Anthropology in 1990 with a promise from my wife that when we retire I can go back and get my PhD. It's getting close and I want to get a PhD in Archeology. I have tried to stay somewhat aware of the field but now I'm starting to get very serious and this book list will be a great start for me.

WHAT!?! Nothing from the supreme archaeologist Erich Von Daniken? Just kidding. I've been somewhat interested in the Mississippian Tradition because I live at the western edge of it.

Thanks for putting this together, appreciate you sharing suggestions! I'll definitely be picking up some of these titles. I read "A Little History of Archaeology" earlier this year and really enjoyed it, and I just picked up Colin Renfrew's "Prehistory". Haven't read it yet, but glad to see him get a mention from you.

Thank you for making this, been waiting for something like it. My reading backlog just got significantly bigger for the holidays. I recently finished Paul Bahn's 'Archaeology: A Very Short Introduction" and it really is pretty short, but super sweet as an intro for students and armchair peeps alike, with methods/techniques, concepts and other notable stuff discussed in a 'casual' way.

Thank You Raven!! What a wonderful list of Great books!! I was fortunate to work for a gentleman from Bowmanville, in the mid 80's, and got to visit Toronto off and on for three plus years. What a beautiful city and, of course, what a fantastic view, on your side of the border, of Niagara Falls!! They were building the baseball stadium during my visits ( I'm dating myself.) I can see why you talk so wonderfully about it!!! Can't wait to read some of the books!!!

Excellent book recommendations and reviews! For underwater archaeology we'd highly recommend "Submerged History: Underwater Archaeology in Florida" by Smith, and if you like pirates you should check out "X Marks the Spot: The Archaeology of Piracy" and/or "Pieces of Eight: More Archaeology of Piracy" by Ewen and Skowronek. They are all great for both the public and academics.

Great List of books!!!! Already had the one by Brian Fagan and still need to get around to reading it. For a book book recommendation I would recommend Napoleon's pyramids by William Dietrich. It is a historical fiction book that is set during Napoleons campaign in Egypt and deals with the main character trying to solve they mystery of the pyramids. Still I was surprised about some of the things that were mentioned in this book even though other parts of the book were nonsense, but fun.

I am just wondering why you hadn't considered adding Kathleen Kenyon to the list? Was she a little dated? I would have thought her excavations at Jericho and being considered the first lady of archeology would have put her near the top of the list, just for fun reading at the least.

Regarding books about the study of humans and all facets of human activity, no library can be complete without the papers and diaries of Josiah Flintabbattey Flonatin. Some of the writings of Marcus Brody would indeed be an intriguing read...but the ONE essential book I am waiting for with bated (as opposed to "baited" breath) is the epic tome YET to be written by one Raven Todd Da Silva. THAT would be MY favorite. Actually...she needs to write MORE than one book. Just saying.
@DigItWithRaven
