I hadn't realized this, but 100%. Every character is either a very caring friend, parental figure, or underdog that you just want to snuggle. This list is probably a lot more accurately depicts what house she's in than any test JK Rowling could ever make. That's fantastic.
Same thing with Lyra, she was the first character that I really cared about and has been a massive inspiration to me my whole life. Hermione and Katara are both awesome too!
Prince Zuko is my favorite fictional character of all time, and probably always will be. He means so much to me on a personal level and seeing him break free from his past is the most inspiring thing I have ever seen. Such a great character.
They say they hate sam because , As they say , He's a little wimp , which is ridiculous , bcse it emphasizes the emotional depth of his friendship with frodo
My favorite character in LotR is Faramir. I just love his passion for learning and doing what is right even when it's hard, and I'm so touched by his sad longing for his father's love and approval. Plus I love his tender heart that is appalled by war, and yet he is willing to fight to protect the beauty of his city. He is a philosopher in the midst of "men of action". He is a deep thinker who also feels things deeply, and I see myself reflected in him that way.
So many great moments with Iroh. He always surprises you. One of my favorite scenes: when Zuko talks to him about Azula and assumes Iroh will tell him that because she's his sister he should find a way to get along with her; Iroh put his tea down to say: "No. She's crazy and she needs to go down!" :))
My favorite fictional character is uncle Iroh. I was once like Zuko, listening to his words but ignoring them, and eventually came to understand what he was saying. Iroh's philosophies are something I still hold in my heart, and I hope that I can one day be that positive influence in someone's life like Iroh was for Zuko.
1)Jean louise Finch-To Kill a mockingbird 2)Rosa Hubbermann - The Book thief 3)Rudy also from book thief 4)Albus Dumbeldore-Harry Potter 5)Sadie Dunhill-11.22.63 6)Dr Watson-Sherlock Holmes 7)Jack Sparrow-Pirates of the Caribbean
I love Calvin and Hobbes so much... I've reread all the comics so many times, and I enjoy them even more each time I read it. Out of all types of entertainment, from books, comics, shows, movies, plays, and more, Calvin and Hobbes will always be some of my favorite characters ever
Oh my gosh I miss calvin and Hobbs! I wasnt allowed to read them as a kid, because Mom was afraid they would give me ideas, but sometimes I'd sneak her copy.:)
I find myself a bigger fan of Frodo than Sam for two reasons: Frodo was willing to spare Gollum, and the fact that I don't believe Sam would have been any better than Frodo if he was the one who had to carry the Ring. Frodo was put in a situation that no one else can understand, and I think being willing to subject himself to such evil and what I imagine would give him PTSD, puts him above everyone else in the book.
I can't listen to someone talk about Iroh, specifically the two instances you mentioned, without instantly tearing up (if not full blown snotting) and there is no other character in history that has this effect on me. RIP Mako
Merphy ranting about how great Samwise is = me anytime I talk about Lord of the Rings. I literally did an entire presentation about Sam being a great hero in the story for one of my college classes 😅
Yeah this was my first anime when two of my friend was talking about this and i was like i wanna watch this , i remember when i watch this and love the time when both of them said "cause i am justice"
@@sciencystuff2106 ahh reading this, i wanna rewatch it💦 my friends were also the ones who made me watch it. they would talk about how great the story and characters are so i gave it a go!
You don't get the POV of people in real life to connect to. Of course to you, fiction would be "better written". You don't know 1% of the shit most people went through in their lives.
@@DoggyP00 that's not true, they just seem boring because we don't know everything that have happened to them and what they think about Everything we see is shallow
My favorite thing about Wit is his meditations on the nature of art in the epilogue of every Stormlight book, and how they always manage to fit into the plot twist that's about to happen right in front of him
If i could like a thousand times i would. Calvin and Hobbes is the reason i wanted to be a writer and cartoonist. Bill Watterson is a fantastic writer as well as an artist. The scratchy ink work. The back and forth dialogue. Spaceman Spiff. All of it.
I love Elizabeth Bennet from Pride and Prejudice. She’s such a witty, strong willed, opinionated character that stands up for herself and her family (especially in a time period where those characteristics were discouraged for women). Darcy is pretty great too but I love Elizabeth more cause I can relate to her more, being a woman. I just love her.
I love your list! One thing I'd like to say thought is that Aang from Avatar the last airbender is so amazing and had a great arc and he has so much depth to him. I just wish people appreciated him a little more. I was sad when he wasn't one of Merphy's top 5 avatar characters 😭😂
Calvin and Hobbes is the best comic strip ever. Some of my best memories with my dad are reading those together when I was a kid and both of us crying laughing.
I can't say that my top ten character list can be limited to books, because I have to include Luke Skywalker from the original trilogy. True, there are novelizations of the film's, but I doubt that counts. My list absolutely does include Iroh and Calvin, however. I am not familiar with a few of the series you brought up, though I've heard of most, but your list sounds wonderful.
the fact Locke and Jean are so inextricably linked that they have to share a spot is actually such a huge testimonial to the book and how they're written. Well deserved too
There are so many amazing Avatar characters, but one that really speaks to me is Mai. I just love how she first appears stoic and kinda boring but the more we see of her the more we see that she has so much depth and thoughts and feelings that she hides behind a mask because of the way her parents raised her. She means a lot to me.
I must confess, I am just now reading through LOR for the first time. Now I understand why people love Samwise so much. I am with you on this one #teamsamwise
Top ten🤔 1. Percy Jackson (Always😁) 2. Kaladin 3. Vin 4. Elend 5. Spensa 6. Nicooo 7. Dalinar 8. Kaz 9. Day 10. June Honorable mentions (Cause this was really hard😅) Annabeth Apollo/Lester Greyson Leo Inej Jezeliah Zuzana Jorgen Jo Sarah( The little princess) Ok think I'm done now😂 (And this is just from books🤭)
I knew Iroh would be on this list the moment I saw the title. And Tales of Ba Sing Se is heartwrenching and glorious. Calvin and Hobbes might be my favoritest character ever. Too many favorite HP characters to possibly stick with one. But Ron is my guy.
Puddleglum from The Silver Chair has one of my favorite monologues ever and because he doesn’t think he’s great but he is. Boromir because he is so flawed but flawed for decent reasons. He just wants to serve his people and protect them and ends up showing his honor and bravery. Lupin from Harry Potter because he is the only DADA professor worth anything. Silk from Belgariad because I love his roguish principles and is so funny to me. Long John Silver from Treasure Island because he is such a pirate, and pirates are awesome. Zoro from One Piece, because he is so strong, and determined, and so different from Loofie. Those are some of my favorites. Just from the top of my head. It’s odd that my favorite characters are never the main character from a book.
AGAHAGAHAHHA I LOVE PUDDLEGLUM!!!! Yes he has one of the best speeches in the series and also he’s just hilariously optimistic while pretending he’s an eternal pessimist. Just💙
My all time favourites include Luke Skywalker, Jesper Fahey and Nina Zenik, Percy Jackson, the Weasley twins, Edmund Pevensie, and many more. I keep adding and removing them according to my current state of mind and to what I recently read 😊
I love that @MerphyNapier gets so emotional about Uncle Iroh. I think she once said he was her favorite human! And I agree, sometimes fictional, cartoon Iroh is my favorite person. 😁 My top 10: Benjamin Sisko (ST:DS9), Nick Campbell (Super Powereds), Uncle Iroh (ATLA), Roxy Monke (The Power), Leo Valdez (Heroes of Olympus), Hippolyta (Lovecraft Country), Neville Longbottom (HP), Thistle (NPCs), Nightcrawler (X-Men), & Zuzana (DOSAB)
Merphy, if you read this comment, I just wanted to say thank you for all your work on this channel! I came across it this past spring after Daniel Greene recommended you, and I’m glad I found it. It seems the only way to make it big on RU-vid is to be an overly cynical ranter, but I appreciate not just your passion for literature of all genres but for the wholesome community you’ve built here. (I’m writing my first novel, and I’ve actually saved your “Dear Authors” series to my playlists so I can binge watch it when I get stuck.) Thanks for making 2020 more tolerable, I wish you and your family a happy new year, and I look forward to your future content!
For me: 1. Benjamin Ovich- the Beartown trilogy 2. Kaladin Stormblessed- The Stormlight Archive These two are the ONLY characters in all the books I've read that would make me DNF a book if something irreversibly wrong happens to them. HONORABLE MENTIONS 3. Prince Zuko- Avatar: The Last Airbender 4. Korra- The Legend Of Korra 5. Amat- Beartown 6. Ramona- Beartown 7. Elend Venture- Mistborn 8. Hermione Granger- Harry Potter
one of my favorite characters is Professor Camilla J. Van Ronson, world-renowned book expert, played by Merphy Napier in all the Squarespace commercials.
Not in order because NO: Kelsier (Mistborn) "Sage" (Ascendance Series) Hermione (Harry Potter) Peter Pan (Peter Pan) Camicazi (How to Train Your Dragon) Cassie (Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry) Jo March (Little Women) Anne (Anne of Green Gables) Does this count? Loki (Neil Gaiman's Norse Mythology) Princess Eilonwy (The Chronicles of Prydain)
I love your top choices, and loyalty is an excellent quality to prize in your favorite characters. In regard to Locke and Jean, their friendship is truly the heart of the Gentleman Bastards. Thanks for the video!
Hard to call a favorite Calvin moment. Perhaps when his bike jumped him. Or the Transmogrifier. Or "When Mom finds out she's gonna burst her blood vessels!" after a hair indicent.
Okay so no particular order (and including any storytelling medium) Zuko... and Iroh... (doubles are allowed for ATLA) Luna Lovegood Steve Rogers (in MCU) umm... Eustace Scrubb Lemony Snicket? ...I want to include a Ruby Redfort character but honestly Clarice Bean Jane Penderwick ...Mando/Din Djarin (parental love isn’t given enough credit) Dr. Doofenshmirtz (again, parental love is not given enough credit)
Iroh was one of my favorite characters when I was a kid... still I wanted to be like zuko because "firebending" and "blue spirit", but the series wouldn't be the same without him.
I've realized overtime how much I love Vin from mistborn. Her growth and arc through the first mistborn trilogy connected with me more than I realized on a first readthrough
I love Vin from mistborn, I think she is so real that I want to have a chat with her! and I like very much kvouth from the name of wind, because he is also very real! I like this in characters, they don't be perfect, because the people in the real world don't are perfect, they make mistakes!
So agreed on loyal friendships. So much fiction expects you to somehow believe ride or dies would turn on one another. Nothing could convince me my best friends would betray me and I feel that so much with Locke and Jean.
Merphy’s favourite character from Peter Pan being Misses Darling, all I can think of is merphy being like her and adopting her own child! No wonder she loves this story so much, when books hit close to home, it always leaves a lasting impact. ❤️
Calvin saying "Is this some sort of trick question, or what?" after his Mom asks him what he's doing to the coffee table is an inside joke in my family 😁
One of my favorite Characters of all time? Percy Jackson, definitely, Neville, Luna, Iroh, Ace, Luffy, Whitebeard (the Whitebeards in general) from One Piece, Ed and Al from FMA,... ...And the Happy Hungry Bunch from Akatsuki no Yona ...for some reason, I can't put my finger on why exactly, because there are other characters out there who are more detailed, technically more interesting, with more character development, but they are all so charming, I just love them so much, it's ridiculous (but that would be kinda cheating because it's a group of people and not just one... but whatever) I have so many, it's impossible to decide 🙈
Okay, so I didn’t appreciate Neville as much until I watched your video on him. Now I wish there was more Neville in the books. I related to Harry when I was younger because I became who I am because of the people who supported me and from the favor of those over me that I did nothing to attain. I just received that favor for who I was. Though I can follow you on your opinion of Neville, I would have to say it would be a toss up between Hermione and Dumbledore for me personally. Hermione represented my closest friends who supported me and Dumbledore represented the favor over me. So! Personally, it’s a toss up between Hermy and Dumbleedore. But if we’re just talking about character development, it’s Neville. Haha
My favorite character in LOTR is Glorfindel, the Balrog slayer. However, I love Samwise Gamgee "The Gardener" because he is so awesome and the loyalty. He is just so, so, so much like Samwise. Lots of love, Merphy. I like Sam too.
I'm so glad you picked Hoid for Stormlight; so many people see him as an asshole or just too mysterious to be their favourite, but I just love him so much, and you described that feeling perfectly
Wasn't intrigued by Peter Pan character description. When you mentioned Peter Pan has adoption concept in it, I brushed it off. When you added details to it, you sold me the book. I am planning to read Peter Pan because of Mrs. Darling.
Here's my list. 1: Uncle Iroh/Zuko (ATLA) 2: The entirety of Kilo 5 (The Kilo 5 Trillogy, Halo. I'm a Halo lore fanatic, can't really decide on a favorite character, but Kilo 5 is definitely up there) 3: Dalinar (Stormlight archive) 4: Severo/Darrow (Red Rising anthology) 5: Grand Admiral Thrawn (The original Thrawn Trillogy, Star Wars) 6: Daylen (Shadow of The Conquerer) 7: Faramir (LOTR) 8: Calvin & Hobbes (Calvin & Hobbes) 9: Dilbert (Dilbert) 10: Eustace (The Cronicles of Narnia) I cheated a bunch here as well. If it were my actually top 10, they would almost all be avatar, with a few halo characters, and the 2 from Red rising. Also, keep on mind that these are my favorite. I'm definitally not saying they're the best.
The way you feel about Spensa=what I feel about Vin. Seeing characters overcome challenges that they are set--especially the mile-high challenges Vin faces--reminds me that I, too, have the skill-set to get myself out of struggles and issues and that loving people along the way is a great way to go about doing it.
I've recently started The Lies of Locke Lamora (thanks to you Merphy) and I have to say I've really enjoyed learning about Locke and Jean's meeting and the building of their friendship. Im very much looking forward to seeing more of it as I continue the book.
Add Merlin and Arthur from "Merlin" and I'm in 100% 😂 I know it's not a book but their friendship is my absolute favorite Which also makes me want to read Locke Lamora...
I love that you put Spensa on this list, because I also see myself in her. At least, the part that I tend to show people (Although Cobb and Jorgen are great picks too). I'd probably put Katniss or Peeta on my list, Faramir, Frank Zhang from the Heroes of Olympus series (I have a thing for soft male characters)... I'd have to think more about it to find 10 characters though
The list is pretty out there, but anyway :) 1. Cersei Lannister (A Song of Ice and Fire) 2. Severus Snape (Harry Potter) 3. Edmond Dantes (The Count of Monte Cristo) 4. Dorian Gray (Picture of Dorian Gray) 5. Frank Cowperwood (Trilogy of Desire) 6. Augusta Pilaster (Dangerous Fortune) 7. Charles Jacobs (Revival) 8. Chrisjen Avasarala (The Expanse) 9. Peeta Mellark (Hunger Games) 10. Henry Winter (Secret History)
Great to see your honest enthousiasm when you talk about these characters. Not that many that would make my list, but then I havent read as many books as you have. And that you picked Spensa is so great. Actually love her personality in both book 1 and 2 even though it is definitely YA.
Uhhh I am not surprised that you picked Hoid for Stormlight. Like omg he is so good. Although Kaladin. I mean dang. I retold the story he told to Kaladin in RoW to my husband. I read it one time and could retell it because I hang on every word he says when he appears. Iroh is a very special character ❤️ Calvin and Hobbes is my favorite thing and I am so glad you appreciate it too! Vin from Mistborn should be on this list!
Hoid is a great pick, there is no one whose story fascinates me more in the series, I'm really drawn to this type of character. Also really looking forward to the Peter Pan review, having recently re-read it. It lands so differently now that I'm older and have kids - I totally understood why you'd be floored by it.
Just wanted to say you actually helped me to clean the whole apartment. RU-vid algorithm threw you on my path down, well, RU-vid and as I cannot just sit and listen I started cleaning while listening you speak. Also I discovered that we share a lot of opinions on books and characters! That is super!
I like the theory that Neville was bad at magic because he was using his dad’s wand for first few years at Hodwarts, wasn’t until after he got matched with his own wand that he started to excel in the DA and @Hogwarts. Check out theory here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-LxSllAseuBI.html
It's not a bad theory, but it has a pretty big hole in that Neville was still using his dad's wand throughout fifth year and the battle at the Department of Mysteries
@@taylor_green_9 right, but that matches the theory. First year in DA (5th year) he is still bad at magic- it is not until 6th year that they see him improve in DA which is after his dad’s wand is broken
@@litlbucky But he does improve significantly during 5th year at the DA and performs admirably at the battle. The DA doesn't even gather at all during 6th year
