In this week’s video, I rank my top 10 favorite games from prolific designer Uwe Rosenberg. A few notable games of his that I haven’t played are Nova Luna, Merkator, and Reykolt. Honorable mentions include Agricola: All Creatures Big and Small, At the Gates of Loyang, Cottage Garden, Indian Summer, Le Havre, Moor Visitors, Nusfjord, and Second Chance.

Glad to see Patchwork and Bohnanza so high on the list. Not usually people’s first thought when they think Rosenberg, but I think both are excellent!

I own and love a few of the heavier Uwe games. But the one my group and I keep coming back to more than others is Nusfjord. There's just something about it we find delightful.

I haven't played any Rosenberg games but Nusfjord is second on my "To Play" Rosenberg list, just after A Feast for Odin.

Great video! A friend introduced me to Caverna before the pandemic, and I picked up Patchwork after hearing about it on this channel. Thanks for sharing more about Uwe Rosenberg's games.

Thanks for the video. I’ve been an Uwe fan for years and my favorite of his has shifted over time, even towards older games. Right now Le Havre is making the table more than any other. This game has that It factor where you can’t always pinpoint why it works so well but it does. If you haven’t played with three, make sure to give it a try. It’s near perfect.

Uwe has recently been my go to for solo euro board gaming. I've been playing a lot of Nusfjord recently and I love it just for how quick it plays. Some times I don't feel like playing a 1+ hour game and Nusfjord to me is perfect for that. I got A Feast for Odin for Christmas and I'm really looking forward to getting that beefy game on the table.

Uwe’s games are very cool. Nova Luma is small and quick but is absolutely great when you have a limited time. We even took it to a pub once🙈

I jumped to A Feast for Odin from Wingspan being my previous most complex game. At first I was overwhelmed but after my first game I was in love. I play it solo since I don’t know anyone IRL willing to learn this, haha. It’s a game for a certain type of person.

You and Uwe Rosenberg are my two favorite designers!! And I do have a heavy game that my group played over and over before we really got into the hobby and that was Battlestar Galactica the Board Game! Still love it to pieces

Nice companion piece to Slickerdrips, Jamey! A Feast for Odin is still my favorite game of all time and I don't see anything changing that in a long, long while. Hallertau is such a brilliant "brain burn" of a game and did not disappoint me. However, I feel like Spring Meadow is so criminally underrated amongst his Tetris style designs. I will always be anxiously awaiting his next big box game.

For me Agricola is the greatest game ever designed. Replay ability is off the chart. The harvest tension is magic.

I haven't played many Rosenberg games, but Bohnanza was one out first games & we still pull it out every once in awhile. We recently tried Caverna: Cave vs. Cave & Patchwork Express and enjoyed both. We picked up Reykholt a year or two ago and it is beautiful & straightforward. While we've enjoyed all of them, they haven't risen into our favorites so we just don't play them often. I'd really like to try A Feast for Odin since it is loved by so many.

I had the same experience with my intro to modern gaming with Catan and then months and months and months of straight playing Agricola lol! I worked at a farm school at the time so it was funny that we all would finish building fences and baking bread and then take a break with building fences and breaking bread 😝 Now my fav Uwe designs are: 3. Nova Luna 2. Cottage Garden 1. Nusfjord! so good 💗

I've sadly not played a Uwe Rosenberg game. Caverna and A Feast for Odin look most interesting to me as well as New York Zoo for a light but still very strategic game. I hope to buy or play one of these soon.

The revised version of Agricola didn’t get much buzz, but it is a significant improvement. Extra spaces takes some of the pressure off. The changes in the cards make satisfying combinations more likely. Just an all around improvement.

more love for agricola! I played it a lot as well, probably the most of all Uwe games I own or have ever played, by far.. :) really love ora et labora (which I -by mistake- sold and then repurchased!) and feast for odin (still need to play norwegians and all the smaller expansion though..), as well as caverna! recently purchased hallertau and am very much looking forward to trying this one out!

I need to spend more time with Rosenberg's games. I own reykholt but I have yet to get it to the table. Hallertau looks really interesting as well :)

Glass Road is fantastic! Tends to get overshadowed by some of Uwe's other games. A reprint is coming from Capstone Games this year so it's a great time to look into if you haven't previously. My only real issue with the game is the size of the building tiles and their text/iconography; they are small and everyone has to lean towards the main board to read them.

Thanks Jamey - I found this list and Tom’s list (from Slickerdrips) interesting. I’ve played very few Uwe Rosenberg games and am not a fan of “feed your worker” mechanisms so struggled to find appreciation for Caverna although I did only play once. I do like New York Zoo though and have been on the hunt for Feast for Odin for a while. Are you considering any other similar lists of other designers?

Great video Mr. Stegmaier! Here are my choices: 6. Agricola 5. Bohnanza 4. Caverna: Cave vs Cave 3. Patchwork 2. Caverna 1. A Feast For Odin I missed the Agricola craze, I got into the hobby in 2015 so I missed the hype I think. By the time I played it I already played Caverna and Viticulture, both of which I like much more, so it fell flat for me. When I played A Feast For Odin it had a lot of things that reminded me of Caverna, but nearly all of the new things I found to be positives, so I feel like it has to be my favorite.

What's make A Feast for Odin for me is its solo mode. The feeling is really similar to when you play with other players but you only have yourself to blame when you cannot take that particular action on that round.

I haven't played any Rosenberg games but the three I'm most excited to play are: 1. A Feast for Odin 2. Nusfjord 3. Agricola/Caverna (I'm open to either but I think my gaming group would like Caverna better) Honourable mention: Patchwork looks like a really fun 2 player game. Favourite Rosenberg box art: Reykholt is simply stunning

I've only played New York Zoo, Agricola, and Le Havre (on the app). Can't say any of them really grabbed me. I would like to try Feast for Odin and maybe some of the Cottage Garden series of games.

Just got Fields of Arle and played it this week. Was deciding between Caverna, A Feast For Odin, and Fields of Arle and after that first play it felt like I made the right choice since my primary person to game with is my wife. The sand boxy nature and farming theme really worked for us and there was enough tension to make the game feel competitive but yet not so much that we agonized over every turn. I won by quite a bit but it didn’t even matter because we both had such an enjoyable experience and also different approaches to the game entirely and that makes me excited to play it again. So yeah Fields of Arle was a huge winner for us.

I'm not the biggest Uwe games fan, not as in I dislike them, but more that I tend to find them decent enough most of the time. Having said that, I absolutely love Hallertau. I love how it feels like it was built for solo as much as it was for multiplayer, which is a major plus these days. The game feels like a nice puzzle to figure out. I love the potential synergy in the cards. I also really love how quick and easy it is to set up (looking at you, Caverna with all those tiles to match up), which makes me want to get it to the table more. I do also enjoy Patchwork quite a bit, I find that one to be a really strong 2-player design and I have played the app for it a lot. If I could skip all the set-up work for it, then Caverna might be my third favourite, as it is the set-up process kinda detracts from the overall experience.

We got a few: Patchwork, NovaLuna, Fields of Arle, Le Havre and Feast for Odin. All are great, especially the heavier ones, agree on Odin here being the best one. Only one that failed for us was Reykholt.

My wife isn't much for the " boring" Euro games but she loves her Tetris style puzzles. We have Uwe's trio of polyomino placement and those are among her favorites.

Some of my favorites were on your list as well. I love Caverna and Patchwork. I also like the scaled back two player Caverna spinoff, Caverna: Cave vs Cave. I've been very interested in checking out A Feast for Odin so I was pleased to see it at the top of your list. I'll definitely check it out now. My FLGS had it from two different publishers. Any idea which version you liked best?

Interesting, I didn't know that two different publishers had made A Feast for Odin. I'm not aware of any differences between versions.

Thanks Jamey! My top 10 Uwe is similar. We have the same #1. Although I didn't have Agricola on my top 10 (partially because of the constant food stress, partially because I had Caverna on the list instead). Great list... Will have to try Feast for Oden but the setup time seems huge... My top 3 (mostly solo): 1-Nusjford 2-Hallertau 3-Gates of Loyang Honorable mentions: 4-Cave vs Cave 5-All Creatures Big & Small

FFO takes no longer than Hallertau to set up. The goods are all in 2 pre-sorted trays.

I just got into the hobby earlier this year and have “only” tried around 100 games, but Caverna is far and away my favorite so far. I also just played Viticulture Essential last night with my wife and we liked that one a lot as well. Caverna, Agricola: ACBaS, and Viticulture have been my favorite worker placement games thus far, which is quickly becoming my favorite style of game. Going to try Underwater Cities, Everdell, and Arnak soon too among a few others. As an aside, really looking forward to Viticulture: World and am going to be placing a large order tomorrow on your website once the pre-order goes live :)

@@jameystegmaier Thanks for designing such a great game with an appealing theme! My wife doesn't like most games so I've mostly stopped asking her to play ones she hasn't tried, but when she saw me setting up to play Viticulture (solo) she was intrigued and wanted to try it. The fact she enjoyed it, given she's a non-gamer and not impressed with most games, really says something.

I've been meaning to try out more games from Uwe, the ones I've tried have been either a hit or a miss. Patchwork is one of my favourites, but I didn't really like Reykholt, Bohnanza or New York Zoo. I recently bought Hallertau, which I have high hopes for!

I definitely wouldn’t use Bohnanza to judge his other games - it’s very different. I’ve not played the others you didn’t like but I’d definitely recommend trying one of his classic feed your people games - Agricola, Caverna, Feast For Odin, ale Havre etc before coming to a view on him as a designed

Yes, so good to see love for that often forgotten game of his. The spatial puzzle combined with the goods conversion makes it my favorite game of all time especially at 2 when both people know what they are doing.

I really enjoy Patchwork. It's short, easy to teach, surprisingly re-playable and conflict-free. The theme may not appeal to everyone and the game might be boring to some, but aside from that, it's a really nice game. Did you do any Top 10 tile-placement games video (not necessarily Tetris/Polyomino games; just watching that video now)? I'd be really interested to see your picks. I am always on the lookout for a Carcassone-like tile placement games. 😊

I also prefer Caverna to Agricola and would say Caverna is my favorite game of his. I also think Patchwork is right there beneath it. Outrageously exquisite game. I struggled with Feast for Odin the first time I played but maybe I need to play it again. Been dying to play Ora et Labora.

Caverna and Patchwork are also my favorites. I also struggled with Feast For Odin the first time I played it, I put it back on the shelf and didn't play it again for over a year. Then, when I picked it back up again, suddenly it clicked with me and now I love it! The engine building is just so satisfying. Definitely give it another try if you can!

I just got the 25th anniversary of Bohnanza and looking forward to playing it with my family when we catch up, and anyone else. Also curious to try Atiwa which is a newer Uve game about reforresting a region in Ghana by promoting fruit bat populations.

Reykholt is a no for me bc the replayability did not seem like it is there. I have New York Zoo but not sure I'm going to hang on to it? I just got Hallertau yesterday with birthday gift cards to Amazon. Hoping I enjoy it. Bohnanza was one of the games that brought me into the hobby when my then 18yo son introduced it to me bc his math teacher had introduced it to him. Been on the fence about Feast for Odin but I love polyomino games so maybe I should get it.

This is my ranking of all "Uwe-games" that I have played so far. 1. A Feast for Odin 8.75 (owned) 2. Agricola 8.75 (owned) 3. Ora et Labora 8.5 (owned) 4. Fields of Arle 8.25 5.Caverna Cave vs Cave 8.0 (owned) 6. Nusfjord 7.75 7. Patchwork 7.5 (owned) 8. Robin of Locksley 7.25 9. Nova Luna 6.5 10. Reykholt 6.25 11. Bohnanza 6.0 A Feast for Odin is my current Top3 of all time after Terraforming Mars and Arkham Horror LCG. I think, Agricola at least is in my Top10 of all time. Still a lot of "Uwe-games" on my wishlist or want-to-play-list.

Le Havre only an honorable mention!? i am shocked and chagrined, sir. it's interesting that Ora et Labora is so high for you. I ended up eventually getting rid of that one as I felt like Agricola and Le Havre were scratching the same itches for me and I liked them better. Le Havre may well be my personal favorite of his games.

I think my current favorite of his are: 1- Fields of Arle 2- Ora et Labora 3- Patchwork The first two here are the most recent games we acquired and played, but it amazed me how fun they were. Both offer players a TON of options on what to do (actions wise and strategy wise), they are very abundant games (potentially every action yields a ton of resources/benefits) and yet require careful planning and strategy, they both make timing very important to slightly balance the huge offer of things to do, but never leave players locked out of good things to do, and the scoring on both is very nice, point salad kind of thing, that rewards players for everything they do, nothing feels worthless.
