When you were talking about Marriage Story when you started your sentence with ''I was engaged...'' I was shocked then you continued with ''...from about five seconds in.''
Spoilers for the list... 10 - Benjamin 9 - The Farewell 8 - Marriage Story 7 - Uncut Gems 6 - Toy Story 4 5 - Us 4 - 1917 3 - The Lighthouse 2 - Parasite 1 - Jojo Rabbit
im so happy to see someone put jojo rabbit on their list, let alone first. definitely my favourite movie of the year, you were absolutely right about how your emotions yoyo in this film, i was completely open to anything taika put in this movie and im so glad that he handled it so expertly and perfectly 10/10
SAMMY THANK YOU I have seen so many top 10s this year and not one has even mentioned jojo rabbit, which was my absolute favorite film this year, i just feel it’s an absolute masterpiece and it’s being overlooked maybe bc it’s comedy? but to me it’s the most powerful, touching and important film i’ve seen in a longlong time
Upset Little Women didnt't make your list. My number one of the year, but such a close contest. Also big love for the I Lost My Body mention! Havent seen anyone else put that in their lists
It's a shame, that i haven't seen anyone mention Rocketman as one of the gems of 2019. It was easily my favorite, because it was so beautifully made and I've literally listened to the soundtrack daily since it came out. I thought that Taron Egerton did a marvelous job and I just wish people would appreciate it more. However I have yet to see some of the films on your list, so perhaps some may shove Rocketman off the #1 spot in my heart. Thanks for the insightful video, Sammy!
Although Taron egerton was brilliant, I personally found the direction to be incredibly clumsy- bizarre casting (kid Eltons/mainly Bryce Dallas Howard and her absolutely terrible british accent, it completely distracted me in every scene she was in), the inability to commit to a particular tone, and some odd visual choices like the black and white scene, which didn't feel very sophisticated. I'm happy for anyone who loved it, bc finding a film you love is wonderful- But those are my critiques, and I think may be some of the reasons it didn't do as well with general audiences as some of these other films!
There truly were so many amazing movies in 2019, but the one that hit me hardest was Portrait of a Lady on Fire. I just can’t get it out of my head. I can’t remember ever feeling so much watching a movie.
god i love you for including Us, i couldn't stop thinking about this movie for two weeks after seeing it. and Lupita Nyong'o rightfully gets all the praise for her performance(s) but so often it's not without the prior remark of "i didn't like Us"/"Us didn't make any sense" and it's just sad to me that people straight up reject films where you have to think and work to understand and decode them.. like the movie is brilliant, Jordan Peele is so brilliant in visualising central issues of society, like he is literally using the full potential that film has as a medium and people don't even try to understand that. also loved the Lighthouse, Portrait of a Young Lady on Fire is also in my faves but i couldn't get on the hype train for 1917. i'm usually v much into any WW1 one fiction, cause i love the literature that followed the war so much, so i was ready for the movie to take me on the whole journey but it just didn't happen. i'm not sure why, i guess the main actor's performances were not quite convincing, i couldn't stop thinking OH MY GOD WHY ARE YOU SO FOOLISH cause someone i didn't believe them to be some naive young soldiers all new to the frontline.
I can’t go past Portrait of a Lady on Fire, the cinematography, the performances of the leading ladies & the supporting cast, & every small detail. Just stunning.
Adored 1917 too. Honestly really looking forward to seeing a couple of the films in your top ten, including The Farewell, & Jojo Rabbit - both of which I’ve wanted to see for a while.
Every year when you upload these videos, I add the ones I've yet to see to my watch list and they never disappoint. Honestly your top 10 films of the year videos are a highlight to my experience as a film goer
I look forward to your annual recommendations every single year, top 10 are always bang on and you speak so engagingly about cinema. Someone get this guy a film column. I'd read it.
Would have loved to see 'Portrait of a Lady on Fire' get a mention, one of the most beautiful films ever, but nonetheless great list and great showcase of the fantastic year 2019 has been for cinema.
Adore these videos of yours, Sammy! This one did not disappoint. Such an exciting year for film!!! It’s lovely to enjoy things!!! Parasite for Best Picture!!!
We're fighting a little because Little Women wasn't higher on your list, but at least you did see its value by placing it as an Honorable. Both Little Women and JoJo made me cry like the baby that I am. Putting The Lighthouse on your higher list made me not as mad at you, haha, god that film fucked me up in a great way. Aside from those, loved Knives Out, 1917, and Parasite. Missed you, Sammy, hope to see more videos from ya!
i love hearing sammy opinion it always makes me feel thoughtful and reminds me why i love cinema so sammy if you're reading this. Please take Bertie back to sherk's adventure it's been a while :)
I loved how you described these movies - I rarely find someone who pinpoints them so perfectly, that I pretty much want to watch nearly all of your recommendations. As a German person I am excited to watch jojo Rabit (and can recommend a more serious but still relatively upbeat film "When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit (2019)" based on a trilogy of novels)
I watched Marriage story with “it’s one of the kindest films” in mind. I got some time through it and I thought “it can’t be... y’know this is pretty heavy” and by the end I completely understood Sammy’s description. It’s really great.
Really nice list and good explanation of it. Loved all of them but my favorite movie of 2019 was Destination Wedding. Never laughed so hard in my life. Keannu Reaves and Winona Ryder are just amazing together on screen.
Sammy, I was just thinking about you on Thursday. I hope you're doing well! Any word of another Big Potato game video? They're honestly my favorite series on RU-vid, and I've bought a Big Potato game after watching one of your episodes.
i'm so happy you chose jojo as your #1!! i get so disappointed when i see negative comments about that film because, personally, it affected me so much more than any other film i saw last year. other films i adored though include booksmart, hustlers and honey boy (which i'm so glad you mentioned)!! 2019 was such an incredible year for movies :)
My number one is rocket man I love how we get taken along the journey of his life through sitting in therapy. It beautifully captures the love he had for music whilst showing the pain he endured.
I’m so glad you loved jojo so much, it was my top movie of the year until little women (which just meant so much to me) but jojo rabbit was just so powerful. I honestly think the scene with Scarlett johanssen and the fireplace soot was one of the most heartbreaking, powerful scenes, I couldn’t stop thinking about it after my first watch
I am really exciting to start crossing these films off my list! May I ask- how and where do you watch these? I'm assuming it's in the cinema of course, but if you miss a film, how do you find a place to watch it later on? When I lived in Jordan it was easy to just google any film name and watch online (illegally I'm guessing) but right now I live in Germany and that's just not an option. I'm dying to see films outside of Netflix.
I completely agree with your list!! Such a relief because i had too many people around me see these films (mainly Marriage Story and 1917) and find them boring, and I had trouble describing why i liked them! Thank you for putting my thoughts into words; i was lucky enough to see jojo, us and 1917 in the cinema
Hmmm... I thought JoJo came out on 1 January 2020, but I’m so glad you’ve put it as your number one. I came out of it telling people it’ll be my favourite film of the year!
Oh, I get it. Marriage story. That's clearly an allegory to Star Wars, represented by Kylor Ren, 'marrying' Marvel, represented by Black Widow, thanks to Disney. What a wonderful allegory.
Mi top 15- honeyboy 14- portrait of a lady on fire 13- lighthouse 12- uncut gems 11- 1917 10- Irishman 9- jo jo rabbit 8- midsomar 7-parasite 6- the art of self defense 5- one cut of the dead 4- climax 3- chicuarotes 2- once upon a time in Hollywood 1- marriage story
My favourites of the year: Sorry We Missed You, The Lighthouse, Little Women Haven't watched Marriage Story yet tho literally going to watch it in 10 minutes lol
I can't believe you put Jojo first! I...liked it, and I expected to hate it, so it was definitely better than I thought. But I wouldn't even put it on my top 10 list. But I love movies because I love getting to hear how everybody gets something different out of each movie, and I think part of the fun is the passionate discussions we can have when we disagree.
Wonderful video, you're so eloquent and clearly passionate about film, and also just seem like an awesome person. Anyway, here's my list; 1. Pain and Glory 2. Parasite 3. The Farewell 4. Little Women 5. Knives Out 6. 1917 7. Marriage Story 8. The Lighthouse 9. I Lost My Body 10. Jojo Rabbit 11. The Irishman 12. Midsommar 13. How To Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World 14. Us 15. Ready or Not
I loved 1917 but an issue I had with it was similar to the issue I had with saving private Ryan this being that whenever they encountered a German they had to be evil and always attack I beleive most people wouldn't be that evil. also the other issue I had was with the one shot style and although I loved the concept and how they pulled it off having it all in one cut makes it all feel to fast so the pressure aspect felt a lot weaker as it felt like they couldn't have been moving for that long and taking the time limit to seem far far to long to cause too much real pressure
Jojo Rabbit yes please and thank you It was such an interesting experience seeing this in a theatre and not knowing where it was going to go and what the tone would be but as I settled into the film it reassured me that it was exactly what I hoped it would be. Also I have never been so scared of Steven Merchant
My top 10 would have to be 10. Marriage Story 9. Us 8. Klaus 7. 1917 6. The Farewell 5. The Lighthouse 4. Parasite 3. Queen & Slim 2. Midsommar 1. John Wick Chapter 3: Parabellum I have to say I haven't seen JoJo Rabbit bc I'm not a fan at all of Taika's work but I will give it a shot now. I'm really happy to see the farewell has made it on your list as well;;;;; I'm surprised Parasite isn't in my top 3 but god it's so deserving of the praise it's been getting, Bong Joon-ho has been so consistent when it comes to the quality of his films and I'm excited to see people discovering him. Best picture winner...... it has to be.......
Even though I am not Catholic, I really enjoyed the Two Popes. A timely exploration of religion, forgiveness, kindness and what it means to be human. Jonathan Pryce is phenomenal in it. I also really loved Renee Zellweger in Judy. A very strong and heartfelt performance, and some pretty great singing.
Some great films on this list and plenty of good recommendations on what films I need to catch up on too. My list at the moment; 10. Frozen II 9. Knives Out 8. Captain Marvel 7. The Farewell 6. Steven Universe: The Movie 5. Booksmart 4. Detective Pikachu 3. Weathering With You 2. Promare 1. Avengers: Endgame
I literally could not agree more with Jojo Rabbit! The comedy is perfect and not a single joke fell flat, yet it didn't take away from the heartbreak, such a well balanced film that has everything I want in a movie!
One of my personal favourites was Ford vs Ferrari. Damn, I was so into the story even though my boyfriend had explained what was going to happen. Another one is Araña (Spider), a Chilean film about one extreme right party that did a lot of awful things during the dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet, I loved it because of the ending, that horrible feeling that they remain, hidden maybe, but still there.
I think one of my favourite films of 2019 was Rocketman. I thought it was amazing, I loved it from start to finish and didn’t expect to love it as much as I do. I hated bohemian rhapsody, I thought it was awful and not just because of my dislike for Queen, I just wasn’t impressed like everyone else, so I was hesitant about Rocketman but I think it was a really incredible film.
Honestly my favourite was Jojo rabbit, I've also been a fan of Taika for a long time and the film blew me away. It was poignant and hilarious both separately and at the same time. It's like Taika has said in interviews, humour takes away the fear and power of the dictator or villain, and he did that beautifully.
Us was a weird one, I really hated a lot of it and feel it put symbolism over storytelling and just making basic sense. And yet it was still so much better than the majority of horror films I've seen.
yeah me too, i'm shocked that this is the first reply i've seen with the same opinion, the satire was just not effective enough for the topic, parts just seemed insensitive.
