It's not that Jez eats a burnt dog leg. It's that the episode perfectly engineers a ludicrous situation that drives Jez to eat a burnt dog leg. Also, I like the part where Jez eats a burnt dog leg.
@@ElZilchoYo decision paralysis, its a real thing, soldiers call it "target saturation" (there's so many valid people to shoot who do I shoot first) Someone like Jeremy who isn't very intelligent would still recognise many ways he could dump the bag, but is probably smart enough to think before he acts "if I throw it in the canal someone will hear the splash, if I leave it here behind the bin what if someone sees me binning it and asks why, or if the bin has CCTV nearby and the Police look at it after someone empties the bin and finds a dead dog." Etc, etc. It only needs to be enough doubt for someone not confident enough to just act in that scenario thinking their first thought will do and so they just hang onto the bag, do nothing, hope nobody notices it.
The Nether Zone will forever be my favourite Peep Show episode. Just the perfect culmination of so many moments of stupidity that results in a humiliating clusterfuck, all to the tune of that incredible dialogue.
Right? Especially here in the US despite the fact that it has been on streaming for years, no one I know has ever heard of it, or taken my enthusiastic recommendation and watched it. It's a shame, but I feel lucky that I "discovered" it and found one of my favorite shows of all time.
Mark Makes A Friend is a great one to me because it's something you see in real life. You see it in school, in work with colleagues, in all walks of life you may have even been the Mark at some time.
My favourite episode without a doubt has to be Conference (Project Zeus). Watching Mark spiral into insanity is so brilliant. And line for line, scene for scene, it's honestly the funniest episode of the show. "TUBE UP HIS NOSE"
The guy who is stood to the right of Johnson at 0:10 is my uncle. He he has been an extra in almost everything and its always weird when I see him on TV shows and movies.
10-2 in no particular order: Sophie's Parents, Quantocking, Dance Class, University Challenge, Jeremy Makes It, Conference, Gym, Mark's Women, Mark Makes a Friend. Best episode: Wedding.
Omg Lazy Masquerade is here! I love both these channels! I don’t have a favourite Episode as I simply can’t decide but my top ten are probably, in simply chronological order: Mark Makes A Friend, University Challenge, Shrooming, Quantocking, Conference, Holiday, The Party, Nether Zone, Seasonal Beatings, The Love Bunker.
Counting down 1 to 10: University Challenge, The Man Show, Quantocking, Dream Job, Jeremy Makes It On the Pull, Nether Zone, Holiday, Conference, Wedding (tied both S2 &S4 episodes)
I gotta say Andrew, I only found your channel a few days ago and you've quickly become my favourite both to actually watch and play in the background. You're criminally underrated considering your content and your quality: sound, editing, humour etc. Never stop meticulously analyzing every minute detail of this brilliant show and mocking those that fall short of its grace
3:40 I'm a massive Toni fan and it's a shame she is only in series 1+2. She's possible my favorite side character and the 'you can be as loud as you like!' scene from on the pull gets me laughing every time. It's a shame she just disappeared [Sam Bain said they wanted her for what became the Callie role in 'Jeremy's Manager' as one of several ideas to bring her back but it never happened for what ever reason] and Elizabeth Marmur owned the role [she now does excellent art work in real life].
I think On the pull is my favourite episode of them all, you have one of the best one time characters in Valerie, Mark lets himself go and have fun and I love how it all takes place in one night it just flows so well
i can't think of ten off the top of my head but my two favourites are Sophie's parents, especially Mark's bits with Sophie's dad, and Mark's wedding episode. overall the storyline of Mark finally getting with Sophie and realising he doesn't like her is my favourite peep show storyline and sometimes i'll go back and just rewatch those episodes
Jeremy Makes It is definitely my favourite episode of peep show, quite comfortably to be honest. Gog and Daryl both got to be the be the best one off characters in the show and the whole development of Daryl saying some slightly “touch and go” things like referring to a Chinese takeaway as a “chinky” to ending up as a full fledged Nazi is hilarious. “Why couldn’t I just make a nice normal friend?”
Hi Andrew, big thanks for all of the great Peep Show videos, I like them all, even the news ones. Here are a few Peep Show factoids which I've noticed over the years, although I suspect that you may have already noticed them yourself: 1) The plastic bottle in S4.E5 Holiday, from which Jez says that he'd drink Mark's piss, is (probably) the same bottle as in S4.E6 Wedding, from which Jez keeps drinking water on the way to the wedding, (you see him put it in the boot of the car when Super Hans is being sick in the public toilet,) ultimately leaing to him pissing himself. So there is a bottle-to-piss link in 2 sequential episodes. Sweet. 2) The line, "Mrs Dob-dobalina," is a reference to the song Mistadobalina by Del the Funky Homosapien. The song repeatedly says "Mr. Bob Dobalina". Simon says it to Dobby right before they play the 'Hat Game', so I think it's a brilliant jokette. 3) I could have sworn that Mark's 'chain-wanking ringtone fanatic' driving instructor was planned to be Super Han's brother. It struck me the first time I saw that scene in the car: similar relaxed attitude towards drugs ("I can open the window if you like"); similar accent; and then years later I realised that they BOTH SAY TO MARK, "Keep your wig on." The Driving instructor says it in S6.E6 Das Boot with his 'retro put-down', and Super Hans at the beginning of episode S4.E6 Wedding when Mark needs to get into his bathroom on his wedding day.
@@chemicalrubber Thanks! Another good one I noticed is that in S6.E5 The Party, when Mark complains that "no one is dancing" and then changes the music, he chooses the SAME SONG which his is listening to when he is running for the bus in his very first scene in S1.E1 Warring Factions. You can hear the same line in the intro saying "Say it's true." If you pause in S6.E5 you can see on Mark's iPod that the song is "Lighthouse Family - Ocean Drive", which Super Hans actually mentions in S1.E1 when he says "they're all a bunch of Marks, ain't they? Sitting behind their big marble desks, ties done up to eleven, clicking their fingers to the fucking Lighthouse Family".
Andrew, thank you so much for your videos. I listen to them all the time, in the background when I'm tidying and also at night when I sleep. I find them a great comfort and I love your deep dives into my favourite show. Thank you for the great content!
think you should make a video talking more about your issues with later peep show, like with dobby, drama, love triangles etc. I know you've done the two minute peep show reviews but having a full video to talk about these issues would be great
In fairness I think he's pretty much covered that with the 'least favorite episode of Peep Show' and the two minute reviews for the later seasons given even he said he 'sounded like a broken record at times' with the issues.
The quality of characterisation with Jez's love interests definitely diminished with each one Toni at the top, then Nancy, Elaina...by the time you are into Zara et al they are basically interchangeable 'bland attractive girl' Fave eps for me, no order: On The Pull, Mark Makes a Friend, Wedding (s4), Holiday, Jeremy Makes It, St Hospitals, Seasonal Beatings, University Challenge, Dance Class
Agreed. They felt like they were 'going through the motions' at times with the love triangles [like for Mark's side, April suddenly taking cocaine because all of his love interests have to suddenly be into partying].
When I thought there were no more peep show videos now we have at least 10 more 😁 Will you do top 10 worst episodes, maybe top 10 favourite characters etc?
Can’t believe it! Most my top five are in your honourable mentions. My top include netherzone, holiday, Jeremy at JLB, quantocking I, jeremys mummy, Sophie’s parents, Jeremy’s manager
Dance Class is definitely in the top ten, for me, even if its for the one line Mark says at the party that you cant even say over here in the US without triggering alarms. "You wont be so cocky Jeff if I show up with a Kalashnikov and 200 rounds of ammunition." "Im probably the exact sort of person to do that." Another favorite episode is Jeremy's Mommy because I have been in situations like Mark where someone wanted me to help with military history stuff (something I truly enjoy doing) for a misunderstanding to mess everything up.
I've lost count the times I've rewatched this(current on a rewatch currently on s4e4) and I've never noticed Johnsons accent breaking or sistering only having 4 characters 😯
S01E04 is definitely legendary, it was the final ingredient that sold the show for me. Especially the “bad thing”, the fact they would show one of the characters being sucked off by a dude on screen and then saying that he returned the favor… you would not see that on US sitcom before and even UK stuff from before eas more about witty banter
1. Wedding (S4) 2. Jeremy Makes It 3. Sectioning 4. Conference 5. The Interview 6. Nether Zone 7. Jeremy’s Mummy 8. Jurying 9. Holiday 10. Sophie’s Parents Was hard not to include all of season four, but this would be my initial list
On the Pull, Dance Class, Handyman, Seasonal Beatings, Mugging, Sectioning, Sistering, Sophie's Parents, Mark Makes a Friend and Local Zero for me, in no particular order at all.
My top ten would be 1. Nether Zone 2. Jeremy Makes It 3. Shrooming 4. Conference 5. Dance Class 6. The Party 7. Spin War 8. The Interview 9. Seasonal Beatings 10. Wedding (fourth season)
Great video as always Andrew would you ever consider doing a once over on how not to live your life? Shakey first season, but really came into its own later on I think you will like it
I rewatched How not to love your life a couple of months ago, I’d forgotten how funny it was. Definitely up there as one of my favourite comedies. Dan Clarke was a comedy genius, really surprised we didn’t see more from him.
@@buzypea2 yeah couldn't agree more and it was a real shame he wasn't given many other chances he is a real talent! I hope Andrew can raise for awareness for it
In no particular order: Sophie’s Parents, Quantocking, Dance Class, Jeremy Makes It, Jeremy at JLB, Jurying, Conference, On the Pull, Wedding (S4), Seasonal Beatings Honourable mentions: Sistering, Jeremy’s Manager (very underrated Super Hans episode), University Challenge
I'm not sure I can come up with a top ten. But Dance Class and University Challenge are definitely two of them. "'The world's just people going into rooms and saying things? It's all a swizzle."
Intrigued to see if seasonal beatings makes the list because of all the iconic and memorable moments despite it being from the later season love to see mark get little victories every once in a while even if they are a tad strange and pathetic
These would be my fav's at this point [in broadcast order not quality and limiting myself to 3 per series max]: 1.On the Pull 2. Dance Class [though it loses points for the Gwyn section] 3. Jeremy Makes it 4. Quantocking 5. Sophie's Parents 6. Conference 7. Wedding [Series 4] 8. Jeremy at JLB 9. Seasonal Beatings 10. Jeremy Therapized.
I'm only going to give my top 9 episodes, in chronological order: 103 On the Pull* 201 Dance Class* 204 University Challenge 303 Shrooming 305 Jurying 306 Quantocking 401 Sophie's Parents* 403 Gym 405 Holiday* *Favorites
I'll have to come back to this one when your top 10 is done but here are a few 'overlooked' hidden gems for my money: Funeral [Series 1]: Scorpio Patrol, 'Why does Death Happen? 'Don't ask me, I don't even know which day the bin men come' etc Jeremy Broke [Series 5] does get a bad rep due to Saz but Mark's pathetic relationship with her and his bomb of a birthday party along with Jez's credit card fraud make it funny enough for me. Jeremy in Love [Series 6] aka 'W-k Bullet'!: The guest written episodes are hit and miss but Simon Blackwell really nails this one with some good Elena scenes, Dobby and Mark being mates [wish that happened more often than romance], Mark's history walks and a brilliant ending! Man Jam [Series 7]: I'm not a big fan of Zahra but it's the proper introduction to 'Ben the shit', the dobby Club and 'Danny Dyers Chocolate Homunculus'.
No Shrooming? "And now you do your masks at the centre." "I'm definitely hearing banging. Ooohh, I don't think I'm having a good time." Utter brilliance.
I always wondered what ps2 games were on the floor of the apartment that one episode, but they are too far away from the camera to tell. Maybe someone can identify what vidya jez and mark are into
Probably going to get hate for this but the following later episodes are the among the ones people praise yet I think there way over rated. Not bad, but I don't get the same love for them as others. The Nether Zone [Series 7]: Full of annoying plot holes [starting from Mark selling his mobile to cut costs yet ordering a taxi, not knowing the address to get a locksmith but Jez orders a pizza]. Some of the banter is good but also has to carry the Jez-Zahra plot leading to tiresome bits where there hiding in the bathroom. I don't think it's a prime example of a bottle show unfortunately [Den of Geek-in a review which is still online-actually calling this the worst episode of Peep Show so far when it aired!]. I find the sequence where Mark+Jez walk the moors in Quantocking much better-helped by having the stronger engagement story backing it. Big Mad Andy [Series 8]: I find the Stephanie business a rehash of earlier plots [such as Sally Slater in series 4], the 'Hot Milf' angle is embarrassing [given David Mitchell is nearly 40 himself] and Stephanie, the MBA or Mark agreeing to go inter-railing never gets mentioned again though Andy getting beaten up is hilarious! [Don't bother saying 'Stephanie was Mark's best match ' as even Podcast Secrets of the pharaohs-who thought she could be Mark's one-conceded that she'd see though his bulls-t before too long]. I don't mind Stephanie but I wish she was more developed or they did this plot in series 5 or earlier. Threeism [Series 9]: My dislike of both love triangles [and Robert Webb's visible ageing makes having two young people fighting over him look self indulgent] probably harms this episode to me as they dominate proceedings and it just makes me think how much better it would be with stronger characters like imagine the same set up where Mark has invited Sophie+Jeff and Jez getting Toni/Tony or Johnston/Big Suze around? Mark laughing is annoying and for me it get gets tiresome very quickly although it's worth it for the Jez-Angus Jesus conversation. The fact this is the 3rd highest rated episode on IMDB [only behind Holiday and series 4's Wedding] baffles me as episodes like Conference, Jeremy at JLB, Quantocking and Sophie's Parents are way better for my money.
Jez eating the dog replaced The Fonz jumping the shark for me. "Oh no, they haven't eaten the dog have they?" Jez could have easily just chucked the bag away at any point. Accidentally dropped it. Done anything but eat the dog.
I agree with you that Gregory is a pointless character & that e2, Gregory's Beard is the least good ep of s9. However, I disagree that it's the least good PS ep, because Mark unwittingly filming Jez & Joe in Mark's bedroom & the reactions by several characters to it is great. I find eps 2, 4, 5 & 6 of s8 to be far less good because of the lack of good characters, the over-presence of Dobby & the lack of a major storyline other than Jez falling in love with her as her relationship with Mark worsens.
I've always found the problem with Sistering is "did Mark actually have a chance with Suze or not?" (before he blew it) is pitched in a really ambiguous way in the episode. And there's never really been closure. Whenever this is discussed in online spaces it's practically 50-50 in fan consensus whether she was actually into him or not.
That business always felt a bit forced to me given it never comes up again. I think Suze friend-zoned Mark overall given she comes to his party and talked to him about her play in series 6. In fairness, the writers probably had to cobble that plot together quickly given series 3 infamously had actor changes [it must be new as I can't imagine that plot working with Nancy at all!].
I have not, no. Although I'd like to go to one at some point, and the hosts actually invited me to one over Zoom during the lockdown (but I couldn't attend).
