When I first saw DOA2 running, I had a hard time believing it was all running in real time, particularly the cinemas. Also, the lack of load times was something that I still find amazing to this day. The stages transition to new areas seamlessly, as do the next matches. It's just all so slick, it looks like it is running on the Dreamcast effortlessly. It was one of the first games I ever played that simply made no compromises based on hardware limitations. No loading, no popping in textures, no blinking polygons. From a technical perspective, it is absolute perfection.

@@darinherrick2503 It was and still is because the DC port had anti aliasing and the PS2 port heavy jaggies. Later on Tecmo released DOA2 Hardcore on PS2 with some extra costumes but if i remember right even this port was inferior to the DC version.

Capcom vs snk 2 and street fighter 3 were a tad bit better on PlayStation 2 other than That Dreamcast had the better ports usually for 2d fighters. I think in terms of capcom fighters Dreamcast had a ton. If we’re talking in general ps2 has much more fighters. The only ps2 fighters for capcom that was on ps2 and not on Dreamcast were capcom fighting evolution which was just decent. And then street fighter ex3 which I never played yet and I think that was about it 😂 I play cvs2 and sf3 on ps2 but those are on Dreamcast as well so there not unique to ps2. But snk, Namco, midway and other companies were killing it. King of fighters series for me was at its prime on ps2, tekken series, soul calibur series, guilty gear x2 and accent core, bloody roar 3 and 4, virtual fighter 4 evolution, mortal kombat series. Dragon ball z fighting games were in there prime. But for some reason capcom abandon fighter after capcom fighting evolution. Now capcom was killing it with adventure games but they abondend fighters but then returned with sf4

Didn't power stone lack an actual "tournament" progression or story? I feel like I remember playing it as a "pick your fighter, pick your opponent" setup and that one minor irritation has always been enough for me to dislike a fighting game, it's petty, but it's kind of the unspoken standard in my opinion. The DC is just console perfection - it literally covers every genre that was popular at the time. I absolutely knew SC would be number one - when you talk about what a "next gen" experience actually is, then flash back to 1999 when you would see SC running on a kiosk. There is absolutely NO WAY you were not blown away by the visuals. It was eons ahead of the arcade version, and as you said, still blows away in 2020. In fact, I dare say the DC era is the last console era that "wowed" me. That true next-gen advancement has never been so powerfully obvious in any subsequent console release since.

Great video! Man, the Dreamcast had 20 or so awesome fighting games -- I still cycle through and play most of them from time to time today! If it can be counted as a fighting game, I rate Power Stone 1 very high just for its fun factor. I have played that game so much with friends over the years. Outside of the top 10, there are some really fun games as well that I still play a lot despite their flaws -- most notably Tech Romancer/Kikaioh, and Virtual On: Oratorio Tangram. Those two games (alongside Project Justice) are about the most archetypal late 90's super-Japanese game experiences we got over in North America... and since I was deep in the anime scene at the time, I just ate that stuff up.

Somehow i can't get used to the graphics of Marvel VS Capcom, as the sprites are low res, and the background high res. I wish they upped the resolution of the fighters to match the background, and if that would push the system to far, lower the resolution of the background and upper the resolution of the fighters to meet halfway. VF3tb was the fighting game of choice for us back in the day (since we had played the hell out of VF2 on Saturn), all the way until VF4 arrived on PS2. I still think AM2 should have kept the uneven terrain in some stages of 4 and 5, as I simply loved the concept. I had played VF3 in the arcade shortly before, and the port was pretty close for a launch game IMO. Visually, I think DOA2 easily takes the crown on Dreamcast, with Soul Calibur being a close second. And KoF Dream Match 99 is absolutely gorgeous in its own right. I've never seen more subtle polygon backgrounds with "hand-drawn" textures on them ever again.

Would love to see you do a video on the Top 10 Sega games to not be released on a Sega console. I say this as someone who grew up on Sega consoles (Master System and Mega Drive) but didn't own any other console between the Mega Drive and PS3. Some games I made sure to hunt down when I got my PS3 included Virtua Fighter 5, Virtua Tennis 3 and Daytona USA.

All of these games are awesome, but it was DOA2 which finally convinced me to buy a DC because of the impact of the attacks. Tecmo timed the animations and sound effects so well that you could almost 'feel' the hits from weak punches to full body slams. This is something which Itagaki put extra emphasis on and after he left Team Ninja the DOA series lost that visceral combat feel.

So many great games, most of my Dreamcast favourites are fighters! VF3tb was a release titel here in Europe, so it had a honeymoon with my console. I soon moved on to SC, DOA2 and the rest. I love Street Fighter 3 Third Strike. It’s head to head with Soul Calibur and MvsC2 for me. But there are so many greats to choose from, Power Stone is great, and JoJo’s Bizzare Adventure is super cool. I’m very interested in Hyper SF2 for matching services, but don’t have a way to play Japanese games. I’ve heard good things about Garou: MotW too.

SLX makes a Dreamcast FG vid. Puts song of a fighting game never released on the Dreamcast in the background. but forreal...SC2 is one of my favorite games of all time.

Good video SLX. I didn´t expect a Top 10 Sega Dreamcast Fighting Game video. Speaking of Marvel VS Capcom 2 and Sould Calibur first let me say well deserved places but i couldn´t took one over another because i had and still have so much fun with those two.

Great list! Strong support for VF3tb. Would've even put it higher on the list, as I'm not huge on Guilty Gear (though it's gorgeous). VF3 seemed perfect for the DC controller. Loved it in the arcade, loved it on the DC. Also second the motion for Plasma Sword. It is seriously way up there for me, top 5 easily. For the humor as well as the action and weirdness. Definitely would've included Power Stone 1 if the list were mine, as well as likely Ready 2 Rumble because I'm insane. But really, R2R looks REALLY great on DC even now.

I really didn't know if Street Fighter 3 would be the top choice - as it is, I agree with your list for the most part. One question: given the limitations of the Dreamcast controller, did you use a specialised controller for the games needing 6 buttons as a necessity? I didn't enjoy SFA3 on the PS1 as much as on the Saturn due to the controller, so I'm not sure I'd want it on the Dreamcast either

During its life I invested in a fight pad for the DC. I couldn’t stand the regular controller for fighting games.

This is a very elite top 10 to crack. Honorable mentions: Marvel vs Capcom 1 Street Fighter 3: Double Impact Street Fighter 3: Third Strike Power Stone Power Stone 2 Mortal Kombat Gold Psychic Force Virtual On Tangram Ontario (sp?) Fatal Fury: Mark of the Wolves Sega always had an arcade mentality. Sega always seemed to ignore the "made for home" market compared to Nintendo and Sony. Most of Nintendo's exclusive hits were "made for the home" and would stink as arcade games. But Sega owned the Arcade-Style market.

Fighting games are easily one of my favourite genres, so if I ever get enough spare funds to support retro game purchasing for two systems (the Wii's my priority), it'll be handy to use these recommendations when looking for Dreamcast fighting games. It was quite the exciting looking line-up of games and you did a great job of describing them concisely and passionately. Admittedly, Dead or Alive 2 and Soulcalibur were games I would have already intended to purchase. I enjoy both series very much and often hear high praise from both fandoms for these specific entries in the series. Still, it was great to see them rank so highly. Plasma Sword is one I'm not too familiar with, but I got to say, it looked great. The character designs were terrific and I do enjoy my 3D fighters so I'll keep an eye out for it as well in future. I am surprised to see that neither Power Stone game made the list. They are terrifically fun games and very unique as fighters; with the second game being a perfect multiplayer experience. I guess that goes to show just how many fantastic fighters the Dreamcast is host too.

I was never a Sega person in the Genesis and Saturn generation, but the first time I saw Soul Calibur in action that changed, I just couldn't believe those were in-game graphics, it was too good to be true, so I just had to have it, it's now one of those awe-inspiring moments in my video game history

I really enjoy what SNK did with KOF Dream Match 1999. The fact that they used low resolution 3D and pixel art texturing allowed the visuals to still maintain the pixel-art esthetics, yet add depth and complexity to the backgrounds... I think it was a much more tasteful way of combining low-res fighters with backgrounds. I love Marvel vs Capcom 2 to death, but I never really liked the mismatch of styles between background and fighters.

Fun video and good to hear your thoughts. Also, it's an interesting exercise in pitting the two machines. There's a solid case for either one depending on your criteria. Dreamcast has lots of RAM so there are fewer compromises to make. But I'd pick the Saturn because I preferred the fighting games from the period the machine was out over the Dreamcast and later fighting games. For example, I didn't like the direction Capcom took with later games. I was not fond of their art direction starting with Alpha, some of their music choices, their 3D backgrounds, and even the announcer in Alpha 3. That's all a matter of taste, and it just didn't suit mine. I saw King of Fighters '97 in a shop -- it was next to a Street Fighter 3 cabinet, which is what I went to see -- and it immediately renewed my enthusiasm for 2D fighters. I loved so much about KOF. That continued to the Dreamcast, and KOF '98/Dream Match '99 would be my favorite fighting game for the system. But I was more into the fighting genre during the Saturn era and tried more things then. I think I'll find your Saturn list even more interesting and I look forward to it.

2 ideals for future videos. First, a retrospective on the software developers "warp" I would really appreciate seeing that! Second, it Would be interesting to see what were some of the first arcade perfect conversions games? Weather it be fighting, beat em up, or anything? I usually think of the "Sega Saturn" as having some of the first arcade perfect or damn near perfect conversions with their Capcom/SNK fighting games, but it would be cool to track down what were some of the first finally arcade Perfect to console games?
@HellTantrumbull
@HellTantrumbull 4 года назад
The only arcade perfect fighters I can think of on saturn would be any fighters that were on the ST-V while games from Capcom and SNK were only near perfect ports. and of course in the case of Soul Calibur on the DC it's better than arcade perfect since the DC hardware it much better than the ps1 arcade board SC runs on. For other arcade perfect games there are certain Sega Ages games, Space Invades, Pu Li Ru La and other games that were on the ST-V that were ported to saturn. other than those I can't think of any games that were a little more graphics heavy that are 100% perfect ports but there could be some floating out there that aren't ST-V games.

What an epic episode! I think the Saturn has the best 2D fighters and the Dreamcast has the best 3D ones. And It’s not just because of the graphical strengths and controllers of each system either. Well, maybe it is. I guess we’ll have to find out on the next episode.

That's a great list of games there. The Saturn's gonna have a hard time beating that. I think it's gonna be a no contest for me. Most of the old 2d fighters from back then have sequels with larger rosters and just as good gameplay, and I always hated early 3d fighters. Soul Calibur is the earliest 3d fighter I ever thought was worth playing, though there were certainly some good 2.5d fighters out there like Rival Schools. But, hey, maybe you'll show me some surprises in your next video. (Actually, I hope so; I always love finding out about cool fighting games I didn't know about.) I always meant to check out Plasma Sword ever since seeing that guy in Marvel vs Capcom 2, but never really looked into it. I had no idea it was even a fighting game. But your recommendation here is making me want it now. I'm curious, does the Dreamcast version of Alpha 3 have the same weird quest mode that the PS1 version had? I remember gaining points to buy new abilities and setting up your own custom "ism." I liked that mode, but the PS1 version of the game plays like crap. I never liked Alpha 3 until I played the PS2 version, and suddenly realized the game was great if it was actually running at the right freakin' speed... Soul Calibur and Project Justice are still fantastic reasons to own a Dreamcast. They are both so good... Project Justice is still an exclusive as far as I know. And even though there was a digital version of Soul Calibur for more recent systems, it really disappointed me when I found out it didn't have the map exploration mode. Even without the HD video output, the Dreamcast version is best just for having that game mode.

I always enjoyed CVS2, it's a good casual 2 player game to throw on, much like SFA3, plus the graphics in these games are timeless. I had played DoA2 quite a bit as a demo on one of the first demo disks when I was young. Probably should have gotten it. I was fortunate enough to grow up on Soulcalibur though. We had actually gotten it secondhand from my eldest brother who borrowed it from a friend. I played it extensively for years with and without a VMU. I still remember the days of trying to figure out how to unlock Inferno and that one night when I finally did but literally the next day, the game went missing :T Years later, got a new Dreamcast and a much scratch-less Soulcalibur and 100% everything. Twice. These days, I actually consider it second-best to SCVI because that game has everything I liked about SC1 and more but that's obvious given that it is essentially a remake of SC1 with a bunch of new elements, gameplay and story-wise.
