I get a very defined twistout from "dry hair". I spray a little aloe vera juice, add Shea Moisture Deep Treatment Masque, detangle, and twist. Actually, I FLAT twist because I like for my hair to lay down more. Thanks for sharing your tips!

I find that doing twist outs on damp almost dry hair, not freshly washed hair, really helps with definition, moisture retention and curl esp on 4b, 4c hair. A creamy leave in and a thick butter works for moisture and definition and a dab of gel on the ends if ur ends won't coil. Hope this helps someone.

I know this video is old but can I just tell you. I followed India's technique to the tee when doing a twist out of course using products that I already have on hand. After 2 1/2 years of being natural by following her technique I achieved my best twist out ever this week. I couldn't be more happier and from here on out this will be my go to style. Thank you India for sharing.

I did my twist out exactly as you said. The results were perfect! I've received numerous compliments! Thank you so much for your tutorial, it is by far one of the best I've seen on the Internet. You are a beautiful black woman. Has anyone ever told you that you bear a striking resemblance to Yolanda King (Dr. Martin L. King's oldest daughter)?

Tip-- ALWAYS do a twist out with some sort of holding product i.e. gel, pudding, etc. It really helps for the twists to set and lock together, so you don't have to be re-twisting all the time! LOL Mistake-- Twisting in big sections. Oh boy! My hair is medium density, but it still is quite fluffy and thick after I finish washing it. So, that is probably why I normally fail at twist outs and I wear wash and go's more often. Please, never twist in biiiiiig sections if your hair is thick and you don't want your twists to be unraveling the whole time!
@fiercelyrealchic
@fiercelyrealchic 10 лет назад
This is soo true. The bigger the twists, the quicker they unravel before I move on to the next section. Smaller twists really work for me.

Some people aren't yet "comfortable" with natural hair. I know I used to think that my hair wasn't professional or sleek unless I straightened it. Nothing could be further from the truth. Your hair is beautiful, you are beautiful! God made you this way. Don't be too worried by what others think or say, just let go and be a curly girl! (and watch other tutorials, if its not twist outs, there are a TON more styles out there for you!!). :):)

This is more a comment than a tip- If you have multiple textures of hair on your head, some sections won't hold a twist or a twistout worth a darn. You can leave the twists intact in those areas (if they are small) or use a pipecleaner to make a tiny coil or do a braidout (in those sections only) to camouflage the differences and avoid having one or more fuzzy areas. Thanks for posting, your twistout looked marvelous! P.S. Can you put a list of products used in the description box for quick reference?
@AlexisNexia45

I agree. I use perm rods or the tiny Flexi rods on certain parts of my looser textured hair. I actually wish these sections were kinkier!

I think my problem is I get to caught up on separating the twists that they lose their curl 😔 but my hair isn't really that thick so my twist out looks like it needs that separation. I'll try picking my roots instead.

Thank goodness for tip #13 and #14. There was a lot of confusion on that part for me, especially when it comes to breaking apart the curls to create more volume. When doing my twist outs, the left side of my head never looked like the right side. So after some trial and error, I've learned that both sides should be twisted toward my face to receive my desired look. Before this revelation, one side would look like a well defined twist it out, and the other like a finger coil (which ended up as a frohawk or a puff). Keep on posting your ever so classy tutorials, I love them!

After watching this and the classic look video, I decided to finally try a twist out. My ah-ha! moment was using the flexi rods to achieve the look I would want. And my biggest lesson from watching these is DON'T TAKE SHORTCUTS. Girls, you should see how cute my hair came out today!!!! Let's pray to the hair gods that my hair will look this good tomorrow LOL. Please post a video on how to keep this style after working out. I'm so glad you posted this! Even though there are tons of twist-out videos, there are very few who get it right.

I'm watching this and I am just admiring her hair, especially the white hairs. At 19, I have a ton of them across my head as well so it makes such a nice contrast when I do natural hair styles (although idle hands tend to stray towards my hair in an attempt to pluck them out without asking -_-). Such beautiful sisters with equally gorgeous hair. I really do enjoy watching this channel.

This video is great, India! I've mastered few different techniques also, but was really looking forward to seeing your process and having a bit more insight. One thing that I had added to my take-down process that may help some other ladies reading comments is oil-soaking the ends of twists. Since my hair is even more thick, dense and frizzy than some, it allows me to pull twists apart without having to run my hand down the entire twist as long as I've carefully coiled the ends as you've done. Love it! Thank you again for being an inspiration! :):)

With my hair it depends on the products I use, and I am definitely a definition girl. Some products I don't even have to retwist or cover my hair at night and the definition is still there for at least 3 days. Some only leave me with definition for a day and I have to retwist and others are just not for my hair. I've been on this journey now for a year and a half(3rd time) and have learned so much about my hair. This was a nice video!

Great vid. My twist-outs and braid outs are beginning to look like this now (ie minimum frizz and hella shiny). What I have found is that smoothing my hair throughout the whole process of maintaining my hair almost trains the cuticle to lay down and therefore gives me shiny, defined and almost frizz free hair.

This video was very helpful! I had my aha moment during the separating part. I usually force the separation to make it fuller in which result in too much frizz. Beautiful hair. I've learned with my hair, that some hair types are harder to set. My hair (super coarse 4c) will not curl with braids or twists, unless I use a hair dryer to set the curl pattern. On very coarse hair the twist out work better when they are curled with perm rods.

My twist out always looks like this. I've been using olive oil Eco Styler gel and Shea Moisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie on damp hair (never dry). I use a Denman brush before each twist, and keep a spray bottle handy in case any hair has started to dry. Making smaller twists allow me to keep my style in for 2-3 wks! I have fine, soft 4b hair, and I've used the Jane Carter Curl Defining Cream in the past and it works great also.

Gorg...I usually leave my mini twists in for a couple of days or a week depending on how busy i am. The older my twist out get people give more compliments. Shea moisture products work so well on m hair. Thanks for sharing India, love you sistas!!

7 years natural and I think I finally got it. My "Ah Ha" moment was not twisting on soaking wet hair! I always wondered why I have so much breakage and now I know.

I personally LOVE big, frizzy, poofy hair so whenever I do a braid out or twist out, I let it get mostly dry then let it completely dry after I take it loose. But like you said if you want a defined look let your hair dry completely. And I love your hair!!!! :)

Agreed with all of these! I feel like one of the most important was number one! I learned early on that damp hair was the key to great twist outs! Loved it! Thumbs up and subscribing!

I had not considered sectioning to take them out--that has always been my downfall. I just had a recent success by winding the twists into Zulu knots, which helps tremendously with sectioning. Also, I will try the smoothing separation trick. Thanks for the video!

I think I'll add the detangling with a brush to my routine. I get better each time I do a twist out but but roots be fluffy so I think the brush will help. I don't pick it out bc it naturally gets bigger as the days go by. But I hope I can achieve at least half of your results. It's so pretty

Oh my gosh! Soooo helpful! Mines always come out so fizzy and sticking everywhere. I'm going to start using a locking gel of some sort to keep my twist outs together. =) Thanks for the video.

For my transiotioning hair i find it better if I do it !) on damp-wet hair 2) do bantu knots to curl the permed ends 3) Flat twists make so you won't have to separate the hairs to avoid friz

I have found that the twisting direction changes definition. For example, for me lazy day twist go counter clockwise. More defined twists go clockwise. It really helps!

This is so helpful, I never thought to use twist and lock cream or detangler. Thank you because I was getting frustrated.

I usually do three-strand twists, but even when I do two-strand twists, I will braid a little at the roots so that they aren't puffy and are stretched. Once my twists are done and ready to dry fully, I will stretch them by pinning them across my head. (It doesn't matter which direction they're pulled to.) For a little extra length, I pull my twists up in a taut (not tight, but taut) ponytail when they're completely dry or instead of pinning. You gotta be careful with this method, because the inside of the ponytail will take longer to dry because of all the damp hair surrounding it. Hope this helps someone. :)

Thank you so much! My hair is this length and I've been experimenting with my twist out! This just helped me to define it more. I wasn't using a detangler so I'm going to see how that works. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!
