I had a viewer request for my favourite albums from the 1970s. I was happy to oblige, but had so many, that I decided on a Top 20 and a selection of those that didn't quite make it!

Thanks for another great video James, and I just knew the number 1 album would be “Songs in the key of life”, and to be honest I’d say it’s probably Stevie Wonder’s greatest album, but looking at those that didn’t make the top 20 there’s quite a surprise that Pink Floyd’s “Dark side of the moon” wasn’t on the list, but in the end it’s personal choices that matter most and that’s what counts, good to see “Band on the run” in the top ten, I’d say it’s gotta be arguably one of Paul McCartney’s greatest albums, and it’s a favourite of mine always, I love listening to it when I’m in the car or at home, 👍

Wasn't old enough to buy records my self, but got Kate Bush, the kick inside, and Lionheart for a birthday. I was thrilled. Love those albums., Dad often brought home compilation albums. Not favourites, but got to hear various songs and artists. The first time I heard David Bowie was The laughing Gnome.
@JamesMurphyYT
@JamesMurphyYT 3 месяца назад
I loved Laughing Gnome! For years, the only Kate Bush record I liked was Babooshka. In the late 2000s, I watched a documentary about her and decided I really ought to have a listen to her albums, and was surprised at how much I liked them. I was the same with Bruce Springsteen.

This was a lot of fun! Well put together. Ohhh, the drama!! You have some billboard charters and some under the radar artists which makes for a perfect list! Still wondering how "Rumors" did not make it, but I digress 😉Cheers! 🥤

Quite simply because the memories that go alongside my favourite albums place them higher. Rumours is still a cracking album, though.
@SippyCupAdventures

@@JamesMurphyYT It is about the memories, certainly. I have your '80's video queued up. My 26 year old son told me that he is currently listening to EVERY album on Rolling Stones top 500 chart!! 😮He does while at work, and he started with #1 (I believe he said, Marvin Gaye) and is through the top 20. Quite enterprising. He's an old sole when it comes to music.

Very interesting list James. Nice to see some obscure choices there. I will check some of them out for sure. I'm especially interested in the Holt and James Taylor records. Love some reggae. I love Stevie Wonder my personal favourite is innervisions. Key Of Life is great but I rarely listen to it all the way through it's a bit long for me.

I was late to the party, as I was born in 72 - but Demons & Wizards by Uriah Heep would be on my list. As would Van Halen 1. Your list is extremely varied - I wonder how typical this is? I'm guessing that many people go "all in" on a particular genre.

I am in my 40’s and my favourite album of all time is any Eagles of the 70’s. I was waiting for that to be on your list! Let’s just get the Urban Cowboy album out and replay it forever. I am obsessed with American classic rock. I am from NJ so we have Bruce Springsteen too. Greetings from Asbury Park.

I loved the Eagles. I know it's a compilation, but the 71-75 hits compilation was stunningly good. I have probalably 8-9 Eagles albums but my favourite is probably still the first one from 1972.

OMG! How could Fleetwood Mac's "Rumors" be on your "Almost list???'" It's in my top 5 all time. It's been with me through good times and bad since 1977. I'm currently 58 yrs old and was raised New York State. Love your selections once again. I do like how you point out a favorite track on each album. Speaking of "78".... is 1978 the best year for music? Rock music in particular? The older I get the more I'm convinced. Love to hear your favorites on 1978.
@JamesMurphyYT
@JamesMurphyYT 3 месяца назад
For me, the memories that run alongside the music has a lot to do with their position in my chart. The top 5 in particular all have special memories that go along side them. Nostalgia plays as much a role in picking a position as the music. As for 1978, I was a huge disco fan at the time and spent a lot of my time in clubs with friends and so that plays a big part of my 1978. When I think back 1978 was my favourite year because of the memories I have from that year. I was 18!

Not familiar with many on your list. I liked a lot of the singer/songwriters in the early 70s, Tapestry by Carole King, Sweet Baby James by James Taylor, Harvest by Neil Young. I had all the Rod Stewart albums but my favourite was Atlantic Crossing when he moved from his Rod the Mod personna and the clever album cover reflected this. Also Hotel California by the Eagles and Rumours by Fleetwood Mac were played again and again. Another video that got me thinking! Thanks.

First I'd like to say that I have Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars memorized because Noddy Holder asked us to an after party (which we ended up putting together) and Slade had the cassette set on repeat and I had to listen to it for 4 hours. Second I have a few more than 20 like you. Though I would be hard pressed to give them an order as I play them often to this day. Who's Next, Quadrophenia, Blood on the Tracks, Bridge Over Troubled Water, Ramones, Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, Elton John, Moondance, Night at the Opera, Sheer Heart Attack, Horses, Pearl, Fun House, Raw Power, Toys in the Attic, Rocks, Every Picture Tells a Story, Bat Out of Hell, Bad for Good, Faster Than the Speed of Night, Highway to Hell, New York Dolls, Aladdin Sane, Night Moves (worked with Bobby when he was singing the good stuff), Cheap Trick Live at Boudican, Mott, Bad Company, Beginnings, Wait for Night, Rex, Sooner or Later and of course Slade Alive, Old New Borrowed Blue, Nobody's Fool and Slade in Flame (I have the DVD, too, and it was based on their own problems as a touring rock band, which was later pretty much copied in Spinal Tap, which I thought was hilarious cuz I lived it). Ok, I'll quit. 70s was a great decade for me.
@JamesMurphyYT

There are some great albums there . I have many of them as well. I was playing Moondance the other day. And you're right, it's hard to put them in an order. Many of them deserve a top 20 place, and as mine proves, many of them have personal reasons why they're where they are in my chart. It's not always about the music as a position, for me, the memories that go with them play a major role in why they're where they are.

Hi Jimbo, as ever I enjoyed your varied list, I love the Eagles Debut (in your bubbling under list), some of my 70's choices include the Doobie Brothers / America / Cat Stevens / some rock & easy listening 🙂 Glad to see Streisand on your list, her version of 'Mother' on the Barbara Joan Streisand album is my best version ever. A note here is that the all-girl rock band Fanny, backed Streisand on many of this album's tracks.
