I love my flex shaft. I’m so happy I chose to invest in it. So I work with metal clay so my kiln is what I use the most. A tip for anybody starting out with copper and bronze metal clay where carbon is involved is do not buy the pans that they sell on jewelry supply or metal clay supply shops. Stainless steel pet dishes are super cheap and round ones circulate the heat for a more even distribution. And a inexpensive kiln shelf works great as the lid. Also, for those who like to paint on their patina as opposed to dipping it, artist water brushes are great as they keep the mess to a minimum. I use Jax as it’s a cold patina that does not require the baking soda bath. And non stick Teflon sheets are great as you can work on them then transfer your piece straight to the dehydrator or hot plate for drying. I know metal clay isn’t your audience but maybe it can help someone who wants to try the medium and stumbles upon your comment section.

@@rohygge9671 hi, I have a foredom, but if I were to choose from experience and more knowledge (even though I love my foredom), I'd get the GRS system. You can contact Lucy Walker - she's got a school and a RU-vid channel, more info. Also, if you check out just the recent review of micro-motor on Estona Tutorials, that micromotor is great too, Bregje's is a really nice system with the additional hammer hand-piece. I'd run, not walk 😄 - to get rid of any pendant motor with a long stiff shaft, you'd be amazed how much hand and arm stress they are comparatively. Good luck!

That's great, Kim! Yeah, while metalsmithing does require certain tools and a bit of investement, we don't have to get them all in the beginning, this amount is perfect for most jobs and projects :)
I have most of the tools you mentioned. Except that mine are the cheaper brand😂. I can't afford pepetools at the moment. I don't have the disc cutter, and the ring bender. I am being learning Metalsmith since January 2021. I have being paying for my classes $25.00 dollars per hour. Once a week, and I have being buying my tools little by little. The ones I will like to buy is the rolling mill and the acethilyne torch, but I am just doing jewelry for my family and myself. I might in the future sell some and then I can buy the tools I want. I buy my stones in the rock and mineral shows. Because I like to see them before I buy. Thank you so much for all your videos they're being so helpfull and entertaining. Great as always. I have some of the items you mentioned, but not a mask. I would appreciate hearing which one you use. I am in a small, not well ventilated studio so a good mask would be really useful. Thanks so much for sharing with us not as experienced jewelry makers.

I'm only just finding out the joys of using high-quality Peper Tools! I recently purchased their professional jumpring maker as the cost of sterling silver gold gold jumprings has gone through the roof, & I was very disappointed with the purchased ones that are available, as 2 out of 10 are usually 'tacoed' - & are therefore unusable..I gave up trying to flatten them out, they're better just tossed in the scrap pile (I'll melt them down one of these days!) Thanks to Pepe Tools I can now make the perfect jumprings with the perfect inside/outside diameter I need for every Chain Mai̇lle project, quickly and efficiently by the hundreds, and in as many sizes/tempers/guages as I want from 2.5mm up to 12mm, and they're never tacoed. Pepe Tools are GOOD tools! There are much cheaper copies of their jumpring maker on the market - but be warned that they are so poorly-made that they will never last, and some are even downright dangerous to use with a sharp saw-blade spinning at 30,000 RPM!

Hiya Oana, It depends where in the world you are? Here in the UK, we have to have all silver over a certain weight assayed by the Assay Ofice and they test it and stamp it to prove it is what you say, it's called "Hall Marking" They have to do all gold, platinum, in fact, all precious metals. I believe something exists in the USA but I'm not sure. The best way would be to look at silver in a jewellery shop/store and ask the staff. Stay safe, Steve...

Hiya Lady stardust, again, and again, and again you bring us very watchable videos with your wonderful soothing voice. Informative and educational. Some might say that this is limited to only a narrow audience, but not so. Those starting out need this information to know what to aim for. Those who are progressing can see what might be next. The why for each tool is great, helping people choose the next purchase with how it fits into your regime helps them fit it into theirs. You could have chosen so many other tools depending on the type of work they do, a kiln is perfect for enamelers and those who work in precious metal clay, but not for you, or me. You chose very wisely, mainly generic tools that most if not all jewellers use, are you going to make more in-depth films now on use? How difficult was it to stick to 25? Or did you start with 15 and grow? I like how you've shown some very expensive tools too, ones to work towards buying, but talked about budget options. Knowing where to aim too is good, sometimes a Christmas Present can be just that tool you thought out of reach. For me, a very sad time, my dad's passing, gave me the money to indulge my love of collecting tools. Plus each one can remind me of him. You've put it so well, Steve! I'm so happy to hear you say that. And yes, absolutely, I've chosen those that I personally have experience with and the ones that aren't too advanced - that everyone can get them if they want to :) It was actually a question from a subscriber for the Q&A video - she asked me what are my top 10 tools! Hahaha I wasn't able to answer, so I decided to make a separate video with my top 25, becasue this number is actually enough to combine my most essential tools. A Christmas present idea is another thing I had in mind when making this video :)) I thought it would make a great list. For birthdays too haha Actually! that's a very timely question, because I did, in fact, found someone! Today I spotted a pair of earrings on instagram, they're by an artist from France and I HAVE TO get them. i'm really curious to see why jewellers have multiple saws and what the differences between them are. i'm a beginner and just have one - the balance on it sucks so i'd like to get a new one at some point. also, fun fact, i knew a pro jeweller with years of experience, who genuinely thought that rawhide mallets are made of the "rawhide tree" bahaha
Aww, that's actually adorable! "rawhide tree" 😂😆 As for the multiple saw frames, I guess it's like with other items, like paint brushes or tech equipement - it's testing new ones and seeing which one fits the best and also using certain saw frames for particular jobs :) That's how it is in my case. Each of the saw frames that I have offers something the other doesn't, so I use them on a rotation. That's a great question! I never had this issue, so I would have to research this to answer. I will buy this wire when I visit UK in the following couple of months and I also though of an alternative - I will buy a reagular wire and try to make a bezel out of it. I will also check with one shop if they can make a custom bezel wire, because they didn't have it in stock already made. So hoping to have it sorted soon! :)
Hiya Naama, there are a few different ways to get the rust off. The easiest is to use your wet & dry, paper or stick. That is very easy for lighter surface rust. For deeper, but without pitting, use propriety rust removers. If there is pitting, the surface of the steel is dented, probably throw them away. The pits will mark your work worse than just surface rust will. But as I said light stuff paper it off. A file will put scratches in the metal that will be transferred to the workpiece. So finish with high grit paper, very fine grit. Best of luck and enjoy your work. Stay safe, Steve...

this one is by Pepetools! :) I like it, becasue it's small (it's the smaller one, they also have bigger!) and I was able to take it with me to this new workshop. I also have one by Durston, which is much bigger and heavier. It's waiting for me safely until I have a different workshop space haha :)
Rawhide? Hmm, I'm not usre to be honest.... But I'm pretty sure that I got a smaller or medium size, definitely not the large one. as for the brass mallet, I have the 2lb one and it's perfect

I love all your content and have learned so much from you. But I don't want anyone to waste their money on the Knew Concept Saw. I bought one and it has NEVER worked. Its so awful, and I am so ashamed I spent that much money on a saw and feel like I was scammed. Same blade (good expensive blades) can't get it to work in the Knew Concept saw, but works in my cheap German saw. I just want to warn everyone especially those starting out not to waste their money on this saw. Any cheap saw with good blades does the job. Spend your money on some other essential.
I completely understand you, I believe it's a same thing with tools as with any other item - some are just faulty. It works great for me and I usually pick it up for all of my more intricate designs. However, I do agree with you that a traditional, most basic saw frame is more than enough to get started! I started with a saw frame like that and I progressed after a while. I'm sorry you've had such a bad experience with the Knew Concepts. But I'm glad your other saw works great ❤️
