I shoot with: 24mm GM f/1.4 - excellent for large groups, indoors, landscapes, and party shots. 50mm GM f/1.2 - like Manny said it’s incredible and addicting. Excellent indoors, low light, and makes awesome portraits. 135mm GM f/1.8 - simply put, THE BEST. Incredible lens if you shoot outdoor portraits. Each of these lens are extremely sharp and focus really fast. I use these with the Sony a7R IV 👍

I have been thinking about the 24mm GM for my weddings, for large groups. I see that you said that you use it for large groups. Does it distort much? I see a lot of people use it for videography. I have a wedding coming up this September that has a total of 10 bridesmaids and 10 groomsmen. I don’t think my 35 mm gonna be wide enough. And I don’t like the 24 to 70 2.8 lenses. I prefer primes. Just curious. Thanks

No, it’s fine for large groups with no crazy distortion once you move back. I had the same issue when I had the 35mm (Zeiss f/1.4).. there were times I needed just a bit wider.

@@Rich2Acosta hey thanks for the quick reply. I think I am going to just rent the 24mm gm. I am not a big fan I wide lenses seeing I barely use my 35mm and my 50mm lenses. I love compression lol. But for that wedding I know I am going to need something wide. And I don't want to drop $1400 to use it 2 or 3 times a year. THANKS again

My most used lenses for current day: 1. Sigma 35mm f1.2 - lens has a good contrast and color saturation of environment portraits (i don't plan to switch 35mm f1.4 GM) 2. Sony 85mm f1.4 GM - is a very versatile lens, my fav 3. Sony 135mm f1.8 GM - I think the best choice for studio close up portraits

When I was shooting Nikon, my go to was the 24-70 2.8. I switched to a Sony a7r4 and picked up the 24-70 2.8 sigma and the Tamron 70-180. The Tamron is now on the body a good 90% of the time. It's just that good.

@@futuretraveller1l anything that's all in one doesn't do it all well. Great for being on a budget or when you're learning how to shoot, but not being as sharp on both ends of the zoom and specially the variable aperture hinders me from getting the shots I want. When on the telephoto side you have to have a faster shutter speed and if the lens is going to stop down the aperture, that only leaves having a higher iso to get a proper exposure. I personally want more control than that.

@@jeromerelayson3850 fast primes are def something that I like. I'd prob go with the 50mm 1.2 gm. I used fast primes in the past for some concerts in small venues to great success. But currently, for what I'm shooting lately, I'm looking at getting a 200-600 next and then maybe the 12-24 sony to round out all the normal focal lengths before I dive into primes.

My taste for portrait lens Sigma 135mm F1.8 - Favorite lens, and it makes everything look so damn good. It's the cheap version of the GM but the results are similar Sony 85mm F1.8 - It's cheap, and feels like the little version of the 135mm Sony 24mm F1.4 GM - Best image quality and mostly used for landscape portraits

For me - especially when in the studio, I always default to my Sony 70-200mm F2.8 G-Master. Hands down! I can cover every focal range needed for portraits and it’s tac-sharp. Mind you I have the Zeiss 85 F1.4 and the Zeiss 135 F 1.8 and love them both. But in studio (where time is money), the G-Master 70-200 is pure gold. I’m not shooting wide open in studio anyway - usually at F8 or even F-11 at 1/200 and iso 160 using 2-3 soft boxes (1 key; 1-2 fills) I find the G-Master THE best in-studio lens for portraiture. Cheers!

Thanks for the input Rusty. Looking for a few new lenses and I shoot mostly in studio as well so the crazy f stop isn't quite as important as tac-sharp! I've been using a couple of primes but was thinking the 28-75mm. I think I might have to rent some gear first as I might want that 70-200mm instead if I grab an 85mm and 135mm.

I just shot some senior portraits with the Tamron 70-180mm and it stayed on my camera pretty much the whole shoot. The images look great and it’s a steal of a deal for the price.

The 50 GM is really great. I even used it on a video shoot and the image is simply gorgeous. I can’t decide if the GM or Canon’s RF 50mm is better, but Sony knocked it out of the park. Hoping they redesign the 24-70 and 85/1.4 soon.

My set of Lenses are Sony 24mm 1.4 GM, Sony Zeiss Sonnar 55mm 1.8 and Sony 135mm 1.8 GM with Sony A7RIV, excellent set, I love it ! (Plus a lot of other Lenses). I will NOT have a 50mm Lens for fullframe, either a shorter or longer Lens for fullframe, for APSC format a 50mm can be good enough.

I have the 135/1.8 GM, this is a very good choise for professional portraits to, but i have the 85/1.8 and this is one of the best lens I ever had, because of the image quality and price and weight.

Good video man. The sleeper lens in Sony's line up is definitely the 100mm T5.6 STF GM. This is my "go to" lens for portrait shoots. Don't let the aperature rating fool you. It's unbelievably sharp wide open with creamy bokeh and never needs to be stopped down.

Very true! I came close to putting mine up for sale since I was heavily considering buying the new Sigma 90mm. However, after a Senior shoot I did last week, it rekindled the fire. The rich color of the blown out trees across the lake during the golden hour was to die for.

My top 3 Batis 85 1.8 there's something about the color rendering, contrast that I can't just find in any other lenses. Sony Zeiss 55 1.8 Sharp Sharp Sharp!! Tamron 17-28 for those wide angle portarits My next buy will be the Tamron 70-180

I love 35mm 1.8 for portraits, just have to be careful with close up angles. I'm about to drop some $$$ for the Sony 85mm 1.8 as well. 135mm will take some time for me to save up for but on my list. Love the look it gives.

a lot of people calm down with hype at f1.4 i dont have sony GM and heavy, expensive sigmas, slowly replaced them all to 1.8 and i am more than happy, they are much more cheaper still keep good quality and most importantly much lighter weight. Hands down to sony 85/1.8 in this case

I roll with the 35mm f1.4 GM, the new Sigma 85mm f1.4 art, and the 135mm f1.8 GM. I rarely use my 70-200 GM anymore. The primes are so much better. I'd love that 50mm f1.2 but I can't justify the cost since I have the 35mm, maybe when I find a used one I'll grab it.

Good question Matt. You actually have those in your range of lens. I have a 30 and 56mm Sigma (on crop so is like an 80mm) but dam that 135mm compression is beautiful. I want to know if your lens is f2.8 does it still give you that pop like a f1.4 would give?

@@Redhotlugnut Kind of... but that thing is heavy as hell to swim with! I feel that background blur is not as smooth though, but shooting at 200mm still gives very good results, if you're able to shoot from a mile away! One good thing about the 85mm is that I could be closer, which is a great deal underwater. Less water between you and your model : sharper results and less particles, so you save a lot of time editing.

My 35 GM as quickly become one of my all time favorites for sure. For the magic look the sigma 105 1.4 is the to go for sure. My 70 200 gm is a dust collector

I love my sigma 105 f1.4. I use to be all about the 85mm until I got the 105 art and like you said it’s magical. The 105 is on my camera all the time. But ever since I picked up the 135mm gm i flip flop between the two cuz the 135 gm has a magical look too. Yeah my 70-180 Tamron don’t get much love anymore since I use mostly primes.

@@LMActionsports You guys are all talking what I'm thinking. I've got 30mm and 56mm Sigma and will upgrade from my crop sensor 6300 and get an A7RIV soon. So I'd prefer higher quality more money over more lenses and buyers remorse. What is the difference between the 105mm and the 135mm? And if you have the Tamrom 70-180mm what is it you don't really like? I personally was going to get he 24/8 - 70/5mm f2.8 lens from someone but are you guys sold on these f1.4 primes? I shoot mostly models, indoor and outdoor. Your input is appreciated.

@@Redhotlugnut when I started buying lenses I went with all the recommendations by getting the 24 to 70 and then getting the 70-200mm. And then I start buying prime lenses after that and realized I like the Prime look with the more bokeh they produce. But I did fall in love with the 70-200mm at 200mm look that produced just as much bokeh as the 105mm f1.4 but in a different look then how the 105 does. And after I start using Primes I didn't use any of my telephoto lenses. I like using my feet to fill up the frame. And for what you say you take photos of I would highly recommend either the 105 or the 135. If I had to choose between those two I would take the 135mm due to its sharper. But either one of them you can't go wrong

@@LMActionsports Ok thanks for the backstory. I appreciate it. I think if I have the 30 and 55 I'll grab an 85 and 135 and try that 70-200mm too. I also have my 18-135mm kit lens but it's not so great but if I need wide for whatever reason I have it. The Sigma, Rokinon, Tamron and Tokina all make at least 1 great lens for the price I think will be easy to figure the one I need when I get to that point. Thanks again.

I am switching completely from a Canon 5D III to Sony. Recently ordered an A7 iii, 85mm f/1.8, and 50mm f/1.8. I can't wait for it to arrive. I know you said the 50mm f/1.8 isn't a good lens, but I hope it holds up until get the Sigma 50mm/85mm f/1.4! Keep up the good work :)

Thanks Manny, Your videos inspire me to keep shooting and learning. I currently shoot with the A7iii on 24-105G, 20G with amazing results. I also use the Viltrox 85 man. for portraits shoots sometimes, cuz who doesn't wanna learn manual focus on these amazing cameras.

@@Pedro-sr9nx Definitely a matter of personal needs and preference. I think 50 or 55 is good for full body portraits that can include more of the environment without going for that wide look. And it can do lots of other things ofc. Also this lens is small so it’s a great pick for travels. But I’m not a pro so take all of this with a grain of salt.

Yes 50mm f1.2 GM is my favorite Sony portrait lens. I started using Sony about fours years now and never like the color science. This 50mm is the first lens that gives me something more neutral color and a bit film like transition that gives my Hasselblad 80mm f1.9 run for the money.

I love your work Manny, I´m more a videographer but when it´s about taking pictures, portrait it´s where I´m looking forward to learn. I´m about to buy an A7III and I was about to buy the 50mm 1.8, but with your opinion you are make me rethink everything. I guess I´m gonna buy the Sigma MC-011 to adapt my Sigma 18-35 1.8 to start. Thank you for the video. My portrait lenses are pretty much aligned with the 35/1.4 GM, 50/1.2 GM, and 135/1.8 GM. I still have the 85/1.4 GM and have not swapped it out for the Sigma since the Sony does feel a part of the family and that is something I personally value. I still use it and would rely on it more if the 50/1.2 had not come along. Don't have an A1 but with the A7R IV I can easily crop in I need to.

I use Sony 85mm F1.8 and Sigma 105mm F1.4 (I know the size is pain but I get a lot of details to work on). I tried Sigma135mm 1.8 but I felt a bit uneasiness with that so I haven't bought it. I am planning to buy Sigma 85mm 1.4 DG DN and sell Sony 85mm 1.8 so that I can get more details to work with. Thanks for the video Manny.

I bought the Tamron 70 -180mm and sold my G Master 70-200mm it was a good lens the G master but the weight of it and the quality does not match up to the Tamron side by side you will not believe it

Love your recommendations Manny. Also, I too am bummed about the size of the Nikon 50mm 1.2, I was hoping they would take a more compact approach but so far their design philosophy says otherwise.
