I have 4 of the 5 you mentioned and I am blaming you and your excellent videos for it!😀 On a recent vacation though, I mainly used the Zeiss 16-70mm just as an all around lens and the 16mm Sigma which fit well in a small camera bag. The worst part of the A system are the lousy batteries. They die quickly. I hope Sony does something about them before coming out with the A6700 that is rumored. I am mainly a Nikon FX guy but at my age, the lighter weight of these A cameras are nice!

Great video! I have the Sigma 16mm and it’s the only lens I use for my videos. I will probably get the Sony 35 next. I was torn between that and the Sigma 30mm but Im leaning towards the Sony 35 based on size alone.

Hi TechnologyMafia! I was waiting for this video ever since you made the bachelor video between the sony 35mm and the sigma 16mm :p Thank you, it's a great help for sony users! I have a sony a6300 and bought a sony 18-105mm f4 to have some versatility. I wanted to buy a second lens and at first, I was doubting between the sony 35mm and the sony 50mm. But when I saw your video of the 16mm I was starting to get interested and watched some other videos. Now, I've decided that I want the sigma 16mm as my second lens, thanks to you! I agree with you. I subscribed to your channel a few months ago and I always follow all your lens reviews. It helped me to finally get myself a a6500. So far I have purchased 3 lenses, and 2 of them are in your list; the sigma 16mm and sony 35mm. The third one is a Samyang/Rokinon that I got on sale for less than $200, the 85mm F1.4 manual focus. I am using this gear for both of my youtube channels, and even though I am starting and learning, I couldn't be more satisfied. Keep the great work!

Love that you put the Sigma first, but I would still recommend the Sony 35 as the #1 must-have lens for most people. The Sigma 16 is a beautiful lens, but it's big, has no OSS and the wide angle can be tricky. When I'm taking out my a5100, I almost always choose the 35. To me, this is the perfect three lens collection: Sony 35 (portraits/general walk around ), Sigma 16 (wide angle/mountains), Sony 18-135 (travel)
@delagente6922

What do you mean by “the wide angle can be tricky”?

@JL-fh4qw
@JL-fh4qw 2 года назад
16 mm is the most versatile, even with general stuff. And sharpness is much better than 35. The OSS is only a big issue if you're focused on videography and you're not using a gimbal. The Sony has slightly better autofocus. But the sharpness and wideness are far more important imo. The size may be a disadvantage for portability but allows you to have another place to grip your camera.

Thanks, been lurking through your channel for a while now and I'm deciding to buy a new lens. I own the 16-50 and 55-210mm kit lenses. I have a manual focus Minolta F1.7 and I realized that I need more light and sharpness. Thus, the Sigma 30 and the Sony 35 came into play. But thanks to your comparison videos and this Top 5 list, I know that I will get the Sony 35mm for my A6000. Wish I had the A6500 but I had a killer-deal for the whole set of my camera which was a fraction of the price for a A6500 without any lenses. Keep up the nice work.

I have the 50mm 1.8 and just bought the 85mm 1.8, and I have to agree, the 85 is awesome even though it's designed for full frame. The creaminess of the bokeh and the overall sharpness is just awesome for portraits.

This is great, we just got an A6500 and were looking at lenses, you named two of the lenses we had on our list, the Sigma 30mm and the Sony 50mm - based on price points versus the Sony 85 and Sony 35, we'll stick with the ones we were looking at for now but might get the others in the future. Very curious about the Sigma 16mm lens though, might have to look into that when we're a little further down our path. Well done, sir!

Long-in-the-tooth hobbyist dating back to my first SLR which was the Olympus OM-10 that boasted ISO25-1600 and shudder speeds up to 1/1000, so ANYTHING made today is a dream. Watched this episode at least 3x, read hundreds of reviews and was perplexed that you still kept the ultra light and short kit lens 3.5-5.6 16-50mm. Bought the f/1.8 35mm prime lens today for my A6300 and really like the speed and extra f/ stops in keeping with your review. Furthermore, I never found a “bad” review for the prime. My modestly critical eye noted that in an outdoor daylight setting I now see why you still like the small kit lens as it kept good pace with the prime lens and the 16-50mm zoom is handy. The kit lens does lag behind on dim lighting and focus speed is a bit slower but not by much. I’m keeping the kit lens too. Time will tell how I like being a two legged zoom lens with this prime but it can’t hurt getting more steps logged in for the day. Your reviews are outstanding and this review was a major factor on my latest purchase.

I like a decent zoom as my "walk around" lens for outdoors shots with my Sony A6000. I bought the Sony 18-135mm based on the Technology Mafia review, and I've been really impressed with the results I've seen from this lens so far. Based on the recommendations in this video and others I chose the Sigma 16mm f1.8 for wide angle shots; the Sony 35mm f1.8 for indoor portraits and video; and the Sony FE 85mm f1.8 for outdoor portraits and other medium telephoto uses. These four lenses should cover most every situation that could come up for the type of photography that I do.
@photosteeve

Sony SEL18-105 used to be my fav to go travel lens but it's not that sharp and I find myself barely using the zoom. I know travel with Sigma 30 1.4 and 16 1.4. Only using prime actually pushes me to think about composition and not be lazy! I used to have the 50mm 1.8 for my portraits but i've seen that even just using the sigma 30 1.4 does the job as it's so so sharp. Good video man, keep it up

I went with the Samyang 12mm 2.0, Sigma 19mm 2.8, Sony 35mm 1.8 and Sony 50mm 1.8. Covers most situations pretty well and none of them is very expensive. I also have both kit zooms and the Sony 30mm macro and a few other fast manual lenses that are fun to play with.

The issue with this little Samyang gem is CA. Strangely enough, the more you stop down, the more CA you get. I don't mind manual focus and without exif reporting but the overwhelming CA is just annoying sometimes even you could somehow correct it in PP.

Great review! I also have the A6000 since its inception and I also have the sigma 16/1.4 , and can back up what you say about it, being a great lens! I also had a 18-105 f4 sony and that copy was not good, it was a soft lens, and a few other lenses in between. But recently I have bought the Sony 70- 200 f4 ( in anticipation of the A6700 coming) and, as a usually prime shooter, I fell in love with it. Sharp, fast and 2 types of OSS, fantastic shots! For a6000 users, 85mm f1.8 is pretty challenging to use since it has no ibis or oss. Hard to get the best out of the lens. I’d say 50mm f1.8 is a great cheaper alternative.
