White Clouds...under appreciated ...and they don't need a heater...and they are extinct in the wild... Now keeping them really is "super cool" ...that makes them number 1 to me
I had 6 white clouds outside in my patio pond this summer but forgot to bring them inside until mid October (Chicagoland). The outside water temp was 56 degrees (!!) but I slowly warmed up the bucket that I brought them inside in and they all are doing fine at about 73 F. Fantastic little fish!!
Sparkling gourami! They stay small (I have 3 that are about an inch long), look fantastic, and have that awesome betta/gourami personality in a little package (and minus the super aggressiveness).
Thank you for sharing, this subject has been my obsession for the last few months! So far my top five is (in no order): Crowntailed betta Shrimp (neo caridina or caridina) Dario Dario Pea puffer Green neon tetra
White clouds are awesome. They survive without a heater. Any water parameter. I neglected mine, unfortunately and they still survived thankfully. Taking good care of them now. Even a good tank mate for a betta.
I’ve been visiting your store for the last month, so thankful for your awesome, knowledgeable staff. My little 5 gallon nano has 5 neon green rasboras, three orange shrimp, a couple of nerite snails and my showpiece, a scarlet badis that I picked up yesterday. Thanks again!
You should have a lot of plants also cause that amount of fish in a 5 gallon will produce a lot of Nitrate in a relatevely small tank. If u do have plants then your 5 gallom is ok
I have become OBSESSED with fish and tanks.. your videos help me with that. My partner bought a 5 gallon tank and he has sucked me into this aquatic world..but I am not mad 😁
Now at 237 thousand, personally I am surprised he is not at a million. Cory always gives people information that they can use either to better their species and tank knowledge, but he gives us the ability to ask intelligent questions when we are at a shop looking for fish and equipment. I am glad others feel like this.
Hey Corey can you do a video on keeping fish for conservation, ala cool fish that are extinct or endangered in the wild that you can find in the trade/hobby. That'd be a cool vid :)
When I was little (8) I had a 10gal with a few pea puffers, and one snail..... I loved my snail he was the coolest snail ever... let’s say the snail didn’t make it through the first night with his new tank mates. The puffers were sent back to the store the next day.
Ryan Charlesworth I was a kid I didn’t know anything about fish... and my parents were not the type to help research so I learned by success and mistakes... I’d never keep puffers again because I have learned that they aren’t my style of fish.. I like fish that school together. And ones that’s won’t eat my snails 😄😄
I just put a group of white clouds in my 10 gallon and I really love them. They are fun to watch. They like to swim into the current of my filter and ride it all the way down to the bottom of my tank😂 When I walk anywhere near the tank , they group up and come flying to the surface looking for food!
My top 5 for a 5 gallon: Male Betta Guppies (three at most) Pea Puffer African Dwarf Frog Scarlet Badis So I agreed with a lot of what you recommended. I just personally wouldn't put anything that tends to want to school in large groups in anything smaller than a 10 gallon.
I've never kept scarlet badis, but completely agree with each of those. I also like to put shrimp and dwarf crayfish in, if they're being housed with compatible critters. Smaller tanks mean I can see them easier.
Given your affinity for guppies, I'm surprised they (or Endler's livebearers) did not make the cut. Love your videos for all the great information they contain. Keep up the great work!
I got white clouds for my first tank, 10g. I set up a tropical tank before I was informed that white clouds are temperate -_- so that’s something to keep in mind. Also I don’t like keeping them in anything shorter than a 20L (my current tank). They’re very active and love playing in water flow. It sad when they end up in a small tank
Golden white clouds and pygmy corys are by far my favorite. I keep them together in a 10 gallon nano java moss tank, and they are such a tag team when it comes to living together. There is also a colony of blue neo shrimp and tan pest snails. It is probably my favorite tank that I have!
Neolamprologus multifasciatus or simlis is worth consideration to. They are active but stay near their shells so a lot of space isn't needed. At a massive 1.5 inches on a male and 1 inch on female.
betta for sure are my top fish for a 5 gallon. their display of colors are splendid and very rewarding, especially if you provide them a nice planted scape. also, depending on temperament, you can actually keep shrimp with bettas. i have a betta who is very peaceful and i breed bloody mary shrimp in his 5 gallon tank. he not once nips or eats them.
I have a 4 White cloud mountain minnows in a planted 5 gallon. No heater. They started breeding like crazy. Such a pretty little fish. Don't know what I'm going to do with the fry, wasn't expecting that. I got them at PetSmart for $1.49 each. Was surprised to find them there. I also have a blue dwarf Mexican crayfish in there. Thanks for the info 😀
@@missdollface27 You cycle your tank regardless of what you're stocking. Typically, with an ammonia source and additional bacteria added it takes about 2 weeks. Also, do not get white clouds for a 5 gallon. They are extremly active.
exactly what I was looking for! just bought a fluval spec 5g for my betta and was wondering what else would be acceptable in a 5g tank (so stoked you mentioned neon green tetras, planning on adding them after my betta with a few rosey loaches and a shrimp/snail). I was just wondering what I could do to reduce cleaning my 5g tank while making it still look presentable. I have a physical disability and I have to rely on help with maintaining my aquarium and I want to try and reduce the amount of help I need while being able to keep this hobby. thank you!
I usually only keep male betta per each of my 5G tanks. But the Celestial Pearl Danios are also really neat, don't grow uncontrollably large, and are Hardy. Also Endlers may be a good choice, or the Microrasbora. Those would be my top picks since a 5G is quite limited in terms of stocking
I don't have a 5 gal, but I do like the list. The White Cloud's are my favorite. I have them in the 75 planted in my dining room. My wife and I like to watch the fish school as we eat and talk about our day.
I am really down sizing and making things more manageable in my house. Nano tanks are something I have been thinking about a lot lately. Thanks for some great suggestions on fish selections.
I love these small fish, I have 2 x 10 gallons and a 20 gallon all of which are currently a work in progress. I have one of my 10 gallons now cycling with plants, cannot wait to start getting a few fish!
Wes Gade There are many fish you can keep with angels. The larger the tank, the more different types you can keep. Angels are my favorite breed. And i love planted community tanks. The interactions and relationships developed between the fish are amzing to watch.
tama yeager gibson Thanks. I currently have a 29ish gallon tall that I have a planted tank with some Angles. I have 1 small bristle nose pletco and 4 longfin zebra danios. I'm going to be getting a small school of Cory Cats. I'd like to get some Otos also to help clean algae off some of the plants
I know I'm late to the convo, but I have 2 gouramis, 2 white skirt tetras, 2 albino cories, and a pleco in with my 4 angels and other than my two largest angels occasionally squaring up (but not attacking) with each other, everyone gets along great. Peaceful community 55 gal aquarium.
We have two blue gouramis, two kissing gouramis, and two freshwater sharks in with our two angels in a 55 gallon with a large pleco. Angelfish are a type of cichlid but they aren't as aggressive as an Oscar or a blood parrot. Putting them in with other intermediate, semi aggressive community fish is your best bet.
I have a Betta with an Emerald Guppy in a 3 G Planted tank, it's pretty small but it's a test tank to get me started. I'm going to upgrade to a UNS 9 G soon and that Scarlet fish seems like a great addition
I have betta splendens in 5 gallons, but they are totally obvious. I also have some fathead minnows, otherwise known as rosy reds. I like the plain color ones. The males get vertical bars and color up when they are broody. Fun to watch. Lastly, I have kept a 5 gallon shrimp only tank that was a lot of fun.
Great list, Cory. I have another suggestion for you, though it's not a fish: amphipods! They would be great in a 5 gallon tank with the fish you listed. With a dense enough arrangement of plants you could get a nice colony going for a constant supplemental food source. I'm sure that single pea puffer would enjoy hunting them through the weeds.
I personally won't put schooling fish in a tank smaller than a ten. My 5 gallon friendly aquarium fish. 1. One Betta 2. One Pea Puffer 3. Trio of Guppies/Endlers Plus some other creatures. Inverts, amphibians; what have you.
Ever think of stepping outside of the box and doing a video on maybe the top picks for aquatic amphibians? For me, having aquatic amphibians was the stepping stone to taking care of fish, which I find more difficult.
Both of those fish are too small for a 5 gallon. Pygmy cories need at least 10 gallons and otos need at least 10 gallons for a pair but if you want ehm to be happy then they should be kept in large groups. They can not be kept alone and 5 gallons is too small for 2 of them.
There was a period of about 3 years when the only tank I had was a 5.5G with 5 or 6 White Clouds. They're awesome little fish that are great for small tanks.
I have 16 WCMM in my 29 and honestly I'd recommend a big tank for them if you have the means - the more the merrier! I stared with 3 in a 5g and they did fine (and were really entertaining!), but in the 29 with a big school, they're really amazing. Always on the move, super fun to watch, and they spawned the other day (and then ate their kids). Great fish!
You eat beef right? Cows are mammals, as humans are. The only thing a betta and a salmon have in common is that they are fishes, just like humans and cows
We had the same problem with fried chicken and, well, uh, unfried chicken! We bought a small farm, and just had to hatch chickens! We would hide KFC when we ate outside! But 6 months later when 13 of the 19 hatched eggs turned out to be roosters......we had to rehome them! We couldn't "send them to freezer camp", like good farmers do. No, we sent them to a half million dollar mansion with half the property line on the waterfront at the lake! The dang roosters are still living better than us!!! LOL!! SO- pass the salmon and the lemon pepper, and a few shrimp for me too!!
My 5g short list: betta, neo shrimp, pond snails. I have 4 glowlight tetras in a 10, they may do just as well in a 5. Never had the green neons, but have thought about making a small tank/scape with them. Thanks for the info as always.
I'm so happy to see White Clouds getting some love, I had a huge group of about 13 or so in my community tank and they just have this lovely personality. I've heard people refer to them as "the poor man's neon tetra" and I definitely agree! My males displayed to each other constantly, as you say, and they move wonderfully in a shoal at the top and middle of my tank! I had no idea they were extinct in the wild! What a shame...I've got even more of an incentive to keep them now! I've been watching a lot of your recommendations for fish as I'm upgrading my tank, so I definitely need some ideas to co-op with my existing fish. I appreciate it a lot :D
I have 5 female koi bettas in a 20 gallon with Bluefin killifish and bluespot sunfish. The sunfish are a interesting pick because even though they are a sunfish, they are shy and never aggressive towards tankmates.
I’m curious as to why you would recommend tetras in a 5g considering they’re such active fish and utilize so much space for swimming. Something like a 20 long seems much more ideal. You can definitely keep them alive but it’s living vs thriving. Thoughts?
The same could be said for anything right? Why keep fish in something smaller than 800g? Or 10,0000g or even take them out of the wild? People are going to put fish into containers. These are some recommendations based on the size of container they have their mind set on putting fish in.
Austen Whitcher some tetras are actually very innactive and just shoal "hang out" barley searching for food at feeding time and even then they just slowly pick around. Some tetras on the other hand are very active as you say small but energetic. Guess we got some advice and got more research to do if we plan on getting those tetras he recommended.
Ben Jay i agree, i first had my 10g with 5 glowlight and 5 neon tetras. I understood the small space so i created many visual blocks and small areas to swim through and they were very active and always breeding but now that ive got a 40g i have near 10 glowlights and 10 neons with corydoras and a blue gourami and some platys but my tetras now just group up and hang out in groups only interacting with themselves instead of the whole tank which is 4x larger than the original home and their group is larger too but now theyre too shy to swim around. In conclusion, the smaller tank made them more comfortable than the larger tank and they swam more and seemed much more joyful, now they just look lazy.
Aquarium Co-Op I imagine 5g tanks are probably among the most common ones purchased and used. Nothing against people for using them, I just love creating environments my fish can explore. Can't do it in a 5 banger and my fishies look bummed when in them. That's all. :) PS... Now I want one of those mini puffers ya bastid. lol! 😆
My first tank (6 gallon Fluval Edge) is almost a year old and when I first added fish, the store told me Scarlett Badis were schooling fish. I got three and put them in with my male Betta. My Betta ignored them but they ended up killing eachother. Makes sense now.
I had a few, years ago. Sure miss them! Had one go by sticking out of a huge goldfishes mouth by one leg! Fish gave up and left him alone after that. No injuries what so ever to our little froggy friend! We moved him to a 10 gallon not to long after. (Guilt move.)
Great video as usual Cory, so lemme pop a few things I have done with just a 5 galloon: ° Bare alll snail tank with tons of snails, its cool if you get like 20-40 in there ° Plant tank with one male betta ° endlers.... it will work for a little while then you need to expand unless there all males.
They are difficult to keep, they are adapted to large environments like lakes and rivers, they have been around since the early Miocene Paleocene and are much to big for a 5 gallon, better for a 200 gallon aquarium. I am pretty sure their was a joke there and I just got r/wooooshed
I got a 5 gallon portrait tank (originally for glofish but I don't like glofish anymore) and I got one small pea puffer with 5 pygmy corydoras. They get along great together and the corys love to eat all the bloodworms n stuff the puffer misses, my tank is planted with a sand bottom and fuval stratum under the sand, the tank works great with a simple hang on back and I small heater. I also have a 10 gal and 20 gal but that's for another day
Sparraw I know I’m late but if anyone is curious, I’d say just 5. With a lid. They’re really active for only 5 gallons but hey, I don’t own a fish store 😂
I love the Celestial Pearl Danios and White Cloud Mountain minnows in my planted desk top 7.5 gallon cube tank. That being said, I'm changing it over to a 10 gallon soon.
I am surprised you said all these can go in a 5 gallon. I thought the only things that can be in a 5 gallon is 1 betta, or 1 pea puffer, or 1 african dwarf frog, or shrimp, or small snails, and thats about it. I thought green neons wouldn't work as they are active schooling fish so 5 would be too small. The same goes with rosy loaches and the white clouds as they are very active swimmers. Am I wrong about this cory? I know bigger is more ideal but is it okay to keep these in a 5? Would love to have 5 green neons and a few rosy loaches in a 5 or a scarlet badis with 5 green neons. Is this actually viable? Thanks.
dajoke24 I have a five and a half gallon with two panda corydoras, an otocinclus, a sunburst platy, a hybrid (fancy/lyretail) guppy, a cherry barb, a long finned zebra danio, and two dwarf frogs. They are all cool with each other. People are over cautious. As long as you watch ammonia/nitrite levels and keep it heavily planted, everyone should be good.
Great ideas for a 5gal tank! Currently running a 10gal heated, planted, low tech with your easy green, I have drift wood, java fern, baccopa, Anubis nana, my current stock is 4 dwarf Cory’s, 1 dwarf Pygmy Cory(added by mistake) and one sparkling gourami...
I have a pet great white. Will he do well in a tank of this size, I really love him and want to do the best for him. Does it also need to be a salt water tank because he lived in the sea or can I get away with fresh water?
It's not hard to add salt to water - I'd stick with that. The only problem I see with the size is if you decide want to add a lady friend for him down the road, but guess you can pick up a 10 later on if so. Either way, be sure to add a Buddha statue and/or temple with bamboo for Zen so he stays chill and doesn't freak out too much, and you should be good.
Topic on: What to feed and How to care for Bamboo Shrimp!!! Does it really mean that the bamboo shrimp is starving when walking around the bottom of tank eating what ever is on the floor? My do that but they always go back to their filtering spot.
Video...... "the little giants" video on bigger small tanks like 55 gallon too 120gallons. What to stock, plant and light for these tanks.... plz an tank you😂
Growing up I had bettas, angels discuss, goldfish, tiger barbs, neons, mollys and sword tails. Now I like alot of nano fish , but recently remembered having some incandescent sharks and silver dollars. Research those two , it seems one is a catfish and the others pirahna. So my advice on this year of good nano fish that are fun to watch , a shark.
I found some white cloads on a pond in California there is hundreds of them and the m and in floods the pond gose to the river I took like 30 home it's the normal bronze ones it's CRAZYYY they are definitely white clouds
