I love these recommendations. I own them all, but haven’t played Frostpunk or Eclipse yet. I’ll probably get to Frostpunk before eclipse because it is soloable heavy games don’t get played much in my house 😁
Like #300. Oh yeah. I'd never heard of Frostpunk but will give it a strong look! It may be a good fit for my group. My top 5 heavies are: 1. War of the Ring 2. Arcs 3. - 4. - 5. - I only need 2 heavy games in my collection.
A Feast for Odin might be our #1. It's just so replayable with so many options that it's easy to pivot if you do get blocked. It's a game where taking turns is fun and you don't have to pay attention to what your opponents are doing to do well. Thanks for the video! I'm a little surprised Scythe didn't make the cut, that's definitely a favorite here too. It's not heavy to teach or to learn, but it's heavy to master with the different factions and combinations, which should still qualify :D. Eclipse seemed a little broken after playing it twice and seeing the plant people faction win by a landslide both times, but maybe without that faction it's a solid game.
Great list, and great taste in games! love Si, GWT, and ark nova. I have never tried Eclipse and I own frost punk, but it’s on the shelf of shame. Looks like I know what I need to do this weekend!
Great list! I gotta try GWT one day. I love Ark Nova and Eclipse! My top 5 heavy games would be: 5. Weather Machine 4. Eclipse 3. Sabika 2. Voidfall Honourable Mention: Nucleum 1. Wayfarers of the South Tigris
I never heard of Frostpunk until watching this video. I just ordered it. I guess I got lucky as it looks like it was just released into retail after the latest Kickstarter campaign.
I like this list (including the honourable mentions). I either own or have played all of them except Frostpunk. That one I have not played yet and I deeply regret not having bought it, when it came out. But if you like those kinds of games, I highly recommend Mage Knight and Voidfall. Keep in mind those are really heavy and even the smaller, "lighter" scenarios take at least three hours including setup. The bigger scenarios (especially if you play coop) can take between 6 and 9 hours. And when you're done, you feel like you've been on an epic adventure.
Thank you for the video! Our group likes coop games. Eclipse looks interesting as I am still on the lookout for 1 EPIC space game. Frost Punk also looks interesting as I like post-Apocolyptic revival. I would pick War of the Ring for my EPIC heavy strategy game when I want to be challenged.
SI, Frostpunk and Gloomhaven is up there for me too. Earth I still need to get at some point. How about Root with all expansions. (Or was it on your mid weight list - which I will check out soon)?
@@DeJogoemJogo the solo mode is a great way to learn (and play) before you teach others. Snappy solo mode that feels like an opponent without much work.
I think putting Scythe and TI4 on the same slide saying that they both provide a "nice experience" in a "2+ hour game" is hilarious! While Scythe is definitely a "nice experience in a 2+ hour game", TI4 is an entirely different beast that makes Scythe look like a walk in the park. Coupled with TI4, while is is "2+ hours" it really is more like a 7-8 hour game.
Wow, I gotta play Frost Punk. Never seen it. Rotating Top 3: Gaia Project, Xia, Eclipse. I include XIa since you had Gloomhaven in the Strat category. Though...did you say you're playing a single Gloomhaven session in ONE hour??? Including setup? That sounds like sorcery. Dunno how I'm gonna play Frost Punk. I can barely get folks to commit to Eclipse or Xia. Can I justify another purchase of a game I'll only get to play once a year??? Soooo sad.
You might be talking about the thematic board. The island map tiles of SI has a basic side(bright pastel colors) and a thematic realistic side. The realistic side makes the game tougher as it is thematic, so mountains are in the middle of the island and wetlands towards the coastlines. The bad part is the realistic side is tough to differentiate some of the tiles, so I sadly play on the bright pastel side just to make it easier for new players. Plus if their is anything this game needs- is to make it easier for new players
