Calendula cream had literally saved the life of my pet crow as a injured fledgling. She had a very bad wing injury, most of the muscle had been ripped out by other birds. I cleaned the wound twice per day and applied calendula cream before bandaging the wing. She ended up loosing the wing(it just fell off on it's own), but there was absolutely no infection, and it was a horrible injury. A friend at the time had used the same cream to cure a chicken of her wounds from a eagle attack. I'm now expanding my own medicinal garden.
My hubby had heartburn so bad he went to bed and I made him a cup of marshmellow root tea and it instantly took the heartburn totally away. My daughter drank some for her UTI and she got over it without antibodics. The tea can be put on your face for age spots and old age stuff like wrinkles.
My mother always grew mint in the desert. She planted it under the evaporative cooler, and it would stay watered because the cooler would drip. The house smelled amazing, and felt fresher and cooler, too!
A local hospital must be a fan of yours :-) After a recent surgery and a reaction to the anesthesia (extreme nausea), a nurse brought me a gaze pad soaked in mint oil. She said they've found it helps if patients just breathe in the scent. And it did!
My favorite is Plantain leaf. We have used it for everything this year. Chigger bites, Wasp stings , tick bites, poison ivy, mosquito bites. It took the swelling out of my husband's tooth! And the pain. Thanks for your information. Rhonda
One of my favorite things to do with marshmallow is when my nose gets dry and irritated. I make a hot cup of extra strong marshmallow tea and breath the steam. If it's just my nose, I take short shallow puffs of the steam. If my lungs are dry, too, I take deep breaths. It is like a natural yet artificial mucus. Very soothing. You should have seen my husband's face when I told him I learned to make snot 🤣
I don't have lamb's ear but I do have a lot of mullein. When I first moved to the country the garden was like a forest with no flowers. I simply went around and collected seeds from the wild flowers or dug up small wild pants and planted them. Now I have over 100 different edible species. And pineapple weed is one of my favourites! It's easy to forget the properties of all the plants so a good wild edibles.medicinal herbs book or two is a must! Love your channel!
Best to have on hand: Yarrow#1, Dandelion, Slippery elm, Black Walnut, Plantain, Wild lettuce, Mullin, Yucca has many uses. I use medicinal plants religiously and these are just a few of my favs.
This is an old video and I try to update every year. My 2022 update is coming out in about a week. Dandelion, Plantain, (two I have used for years but often forget to mention as they are the ones that just grow wild here) and Mullein are on my list along with standards like yarrow, marshmallow and many more listed, however it is important for each person to understand that what is best for one is not best for another. Not everyone can use wild lettuce and not everyone can grow all these herbs. I am not even sure yet if Mullein will grow here considering our very high amounts of rain but I am finally trying it for the first time this year.
I found a plant that doesn't mind shade and has salicylic acid pain and anti-inflammatory properties without having to have the room for a white birch tree. It's called Meadowsweet. Another one of my favorites is Passion flower.
Hi Heidi, Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge. And I am so happy to know Wanda too!! I was growing echinacea for awhile and then it died out. I am anxious to bring it back. And I am definitely adding calendula to my garden!! A herb that I really like is “Pineapple” Sage. It does well in the fall here and has beautiful red flowers...and it actually smells and tastes like pineapple!! Thanks again for all you share!! Love, Mary ❤️😘❤️
That sage sounds wonderful! I may have to find some of that! :D I will actually be doing a separate video just on culinary herbs that are also medicinal :D
Wow!! I am so looking forward to the culinary herb video!! Let me figure out how to collect the seeds and I'll send you some of the pineapple sage!! :-)
Comfrey is also great in any garden for use as a topical mulch, soil ‘conditioner’, great addition to compost .. it draws a lot of desired nutrients and minerals up from longer depths in the soil... if I remember correctly.
O I have MUCH more, I am breaking this down into more categories and will be doing more top medicinal herb lists - the next one is on culinary herbs. Since I consider elderberry a fruit, it does not go into either list but it is certainly a medicinal I must have on hand! :D
All great herbs! Hubby cut his finger really deep while removing old porch boards, bled like crazy! Told him to let it bleed, then we rinsed it off and I put yarrow mashed with lambsears and nasturtium police on, it healed beautifully! Day 3 we put some vit E oil on. I love plantain!!!! Been drinking it as tea with lemon balm lately. Thanks for another great video!
I love your videos Heidi. I had a nodule on my thyroid no cancer and the surgeon took my whole thyroid out. I wish I knew then what I know now. If anyone knows something natural instead of Synthroid or levothyroxine I will appreciated so much. I believe God put everything on this earth everything we needed to be healthy. People are not staying close in nature as we are supposed to be in my opinion. I was one of those when I got my nodule. Doctors are for the money, not because they care about people. They seem to ignore that one day they will have to answer to our Creator.
We have a short growing seasons I am having trouble growing some things but I have a few. Also we are in a dry area. Dehydrating some of my tomatoes, love it thanks
Thank you. I really enjoyed it. French herbalist Maurice Messegue says, that nasturtium tincture (made also with nettles and box greens, not sure what those are) rubbed into a scalp daily can regrow the hair where bald spots were. Also, do you know, that Ball finally started making amber jars. I just got some online from Target, and they seem to be good quality. They just had them with wide mouth opening for quart and half quart, but still nice. I hope they will make other sizes as well.
It is the nasturtium flowers that are mostly used for hair growth, this is why I use them in my homemade shampoo. I have a video just on nasturtiums and their uses: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-IvdyI5asX7E.html I saw those amber Ball jars and am in LOVE but cannot justify the expense right now. I am hoping to get my hands on some in the near future. I will start by asking my local store if they will get them for me, surprisingly, I can usually get a cheaper price there on the colored Ball jars.
Thank you Heidi. Love your channel. Can tell how hard you work. Best part is that you love the Lord and glorify His Holy Name ❤ Appreciate the Scriptures at end of your videos. Am newbie here, but am already subscribed to Rumble. Back up your videos. Many have lost theirs without forewarning. We'd all hate that because you have put out so much helpful, good things. The Lord bless you and Mr Rain and keep you and yours.
We're in the desert and our mint grows beautifully. just find a semi shady spot. Great video especially for someone like myself who's trying to figure out what to start with. Blessings to you and subbers. TY I really appreciated this video
Thank you for the list. Some o did not know about. My son has stress over elated stomach pain and I use peppermint essential oil in a capsule and it works every time. Peppermint is also good for sinus headaches and focus.
Thank you! I have been undecided on which herbs to put into my new garden allotment!! This was very helpful, I am going with mint (I luckily inherited some so will definitely keep it going ;) catnip, marshmallow, yarrow, borage, already planted lemon balm and lemon verbena. Love your videos!!
I LOVE this! I just ordered a whole bunch of herb seeds from Baker Creek and I'm so ready to expand the herbs. Thank you so much for doing this video for us! You know what I discovered? Banana peels work GREAT for stings and spider bites. Just like you said, you put it on and within 5 minutes there is no pain, no swelling, and almost no mark. I've seen banana peels remove infection from spider bites in just about 4 hours. We literally tape the banana peel to our skin and leave it on. I have been watching many of your herb videos and I will be moving forward. All of my makeup products came in and I made my first batch of face powder from your video and I LOVE IT!!! After about 5 minutes of being on, it warms on the skin and has a beautiful look - much better then what I was doing. So now, I'm going to make your lotion and mix some face powder with it to make an under eye cover and a liquid foundation. I love the way the cacao powder makes my face look. Thank you! Thank you!
Hello dear friend, been missing watching your videos, so now I must catch up on all of them. I could listen to your teaching all day. I sincerely hope someday you will seriously do a book. I have learned so much from you, I sincerely thank you for all your commitment to teach others of your wisdom, going to watch this one over, it's so educational, blessings
Great information - I love all of these and grow most of them. Will work on getting them all. Just moved Marshmallow to our property as it grows wild here but want it here on our land.
Spent a year in an apothecary apprenticeship, and have been working on growing, gathering, and using what's available to me. I have either been growing all of these, or have access to wild ones. One thing to keep in mind when using echinacea: it is an immune system booster, so if you have autoimmunity problems, use with caution.
Thanks! Will try that catnip/feverfew to chew for headache. I grow the feverfew to make tea for my headaches but hated the taste. Adding another herb should mask taste! I would have a hard time narrowing it down to 10 fav. herbs - so many great and necessary ones!
I also make pain tinctures and extracts using the feverfew and catnip since it dies back in the winter here. Here is my latest video on that: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-sfUGjDg5zMM.html
Absolutely beautiful salad with borage, pansies and not sure what else. Have nowhere to grow plants. Praying God would allow me to move where I can if only a little. Have a patio with walls on either side, screened in, but doesn't get enough sun. 😭
Catnip is good for attracting the neighborhood cats... I have to grow mine inside if I don't want every cat in the neighborhood in my garden.. and there are a lot of them! Lol
I am surprised I have not had any issue with cats, I even have catnip growing out front and it gets left alone - could be they just have not found it yet! haha
Your medicinal/herb garden is so lovely! Can you share approx. how large of a space you set out to accomplish it? Thanks so much, it's always a pleasure finding these gems I've missed. It's like a scavenger hunt that just keeps better house by house in "my neighborhood"!
I am not sure of my overall space without measuring it out but we are only on a 1/3 lot in a neighborhood with not as much yard space as it may sound as our rambler style house is 2400 square feet, plus our decks, chicken coop, parking areas, 1200 square foot shop and firewood storage area. So I work with the little space I have planting where ever I can :)
Thanks for the video! IM NEW TO USING HERBS BUT REALLY WANT TO STOP USING RX MEDS. DO YOU HAVE A VIDEO ON HOW TO USE THE CATNIP & OTHER HERBS FOR HEADACHE? I have a lot and hate taking ibuprofen but have to sometimes 😕 ENJOYING YOUR CHANNEL. God IS good ALL the time. Love that you put that in your videos!
Thank you! I do have a video on making a pain tincture but plan on doing a new one soon so I can go more into depth on amounts to take and I will also talk about using the herbs fresh
No, I am self taught and though I have learned much more since this old video, I still have much more to learn yet :) I never did get a top herbs for 2021 video out this year but knowing me, my top herbs will have changed yet again by 2022! haha
Thank you for such an informative video Heidi,, we have many herbs dried this year. I am truly hoping to find marshmallow to start.... the lambs ear does it have only pink/purple flowers? Or do they also have yellow? We have a plant growing that looks just like lambs ear but the flowers are yellow. Thank you SO MUCH for always being here with such great information and knowledge that you share. Have a BLESSED DAY 🌻🐝🌻
Yes, it sounds like mullien, it does not grow here but if I remember correctly, some of the medicinal properties are the same, The lamb's ear leaves are VERY soft, just like velvet. Remember to check out my playlist I linked at the end and in the icards where I talk about these various herbs (most of them anyway) Lamb's ear is one of them and I show what it looks like when flowering
Watching this again 😊 My first love of weeds is plantain. My second love of weeds is wild lettuce. My third love of weeds is spilanthes. My forth; catnip, natural Valium. And in no particular order, but I I love: Calendula Black seed Marshmallow or slippery elm Mints Chamomile Fennel If I could only have 10; which would pain me greatly; these would be my list.
Yes I do but I have a separate video on infusing the oil used in the skin cream so I will link to both here These are older videos and before we added more lighting for a better view: Infused Oil: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-pLNbKoY5v5c.html Skin Cream: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ZkmrvVolDh0.html
I have been dealing with a type of flea I've never seen or heard of before. Tiny slivers that burrow . chigoe fleas , from what I've seen on line . Wondering if cat nip could be used on skin . Ty for the posts .great for knowledge.
Here is the link to my recent video on my skin care: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Bwc1HHp24rE.html And here is the link to my most recent skin cream video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-M9e5J6Vs1V0.html
Thanks for the great suggestions. I learned some things. I'm shocked you say chew up a plant and put on an open wound. Do you not get any infections from this? I'm curious. Thanks again!
Masticating herbs and applying directly is something that has been done by many cultures for centuries. Maybe if the person doing the chewing is diseased, this could be a problem but even urine from a healthy person is sterile
Hello! Would you mind please sharing with us the title of a reference book on medicinals? One that you have found valuable. We really appreciate your videos here in southwest VA!
I do have several videos talking about herb books and always have some linked in the description box of every video. I will also have a video coming out soon talking more about them. Here are a few: *Prepper's Natural Medicine: amzn.to/2oBLX4m *The Homesteader’s Herbal Companion: amzn.to/2yUeFr3 *Rodale Medicinal Herbs Encyclopedia: amzn.to/2obOZ2N
@@RainCountryHomestead God bless you so much. Our little community here is working hard learning new things. We've even started our own little fellowship. God is good! Thank you.
I'm fairly new to your channel - although I've binge-watched at least a bazillion so far - lol. I haven't seen you mention or use Chickweed or Purple Dead Nettle - do you grow those in the PNW?
@@RainCountryHomestead I found a few growing on my property and transplanted them in a spot where they're all together (a little Purple Dead Nettle community - lol). I recently ordered a packet of seeds online through Amazon so I can make my PDN patch a little bigger for harvesting.
Not yet, they are not ready yet, the marshmallow takes a long time to dry and prepare, but I will for sure have that, borage, and feverfew. I hope to gather enough echinacea seed as well.
Great video & a fabulous skills to have. It would great if someone would do a really in-depth video including all the info on every single medicinal plants but I’m quite sure that would be as long as another video I saw on here that was a little over 4hrs long. I’m sure there’s books & other material on the web that has all of that information. I go to nature before I visit a doctor if I ever have something that’s bothering me or not necessarily ailing me because nature is awesome. I prefer things like alternative medicine over most Western medicine. As this isn’t a medicinal use, I actually used Wooly Lambs Ear before in a not so common way as a sort of makeshift insole. One of my favorite mottos: Adapt & overcome & my have I in many ways. Worked great & provided much more comfort. Also at 5:37, was that Clara finally doing something productive instead of insisting on being obnoxious or was that her having a tantrum & winging out? You must excuse me, I can be quite random. Haha
I have been collecting calendula flowers all summer and would like to start infusing them in oil. Is it best to pull off all the petals and only infuse them, of do you infuse the while flower green parts and all? Do you use the leaves for anything? I finally have a little marshmallow plant growing after many years of planting seeds. I'm afraid if I take any leaves or flowers it might disappear. I wish I knew more about the marigold that people (including me) grow in their gardens as a bug repellent. I've read that they are toxic and that they aren't. I think it's French Marigold.
I have always infused the whole flower but it is up to you. The leaves of the calendula do not have any use and I believe I read they can be toxic. The French Marigold is not toxic and has some similar benefits as the calendula, though in my opinion are inferior in that aspect and do not smell as nice.
Baker Creek (rareseeds.com) is where I initially bought most of mine. I will be offering some such as marshmallow, feverfew, and a few more on my store once they are ready
