My training philosophy is probably pretty different than yours. I train for quality of life not ego lifts.
It's not that im a barbells vs. kettlebells person, they just fit me much better for my goals in life.
And I think you know that by watching this channel over the past decade Im a huge fan of a great heavy kettlebell workout, it just has to be one that i can recover from well and reduce my chances of injuries.
Here is a bit of info on what tools I use to train, how much barbell and kettlebell work, what types of recovery etc.
Hope you enjoy this pre pandemic rambling!

How often do we as an individual have to lift 400-500 lbs out in the real world? I used to do powerlifting when I was young, it was great fun. I got some big numbers. But now, at 67 years old, I workout exclusively with Kettlebells, Bulgarian Bag, Mace, Steel Clubs and find it much more beneficial in my life. These more "practical" tools seem to fit real life needs better, helps my joints, and are aiding my health.

This is my thoughts exactly. Once we're past the ego we can stop with the constant numbers reach. Also how many times do you pick up a 400 plus lb object that is equally balanced and you can be in the center of it with a perfect handle? Nah it's like a , stone, a washing machine or a sectional couch 😆

This is really important. There are so many things I’ve cut out because I realized they really weren’t good for me long term (distance running is one major one). I’ve been pretty much injury free (knock wood). I’m very comfortable with my level of strength. At the end of the day, most people just want a better life. Letting your ego get in the way can really be damaging (obviously some people enjoy competing and im not knocking it, but they know the risks). I’ve seen so many who really weren’t competing, and now are in their 40’s barely able to do any sort of lifting because they had to get to a 400lb bench or something. The irony is now, they couldn’t do a 200 lb bench. I even try to tell a lot of people… “do something physically active that you enjoy doing.” It’s a much better alternative than doing what most do (which is essentially nothing). The idea is to keep this as a part of your life indefinitely, no sense in adding more stress. Plus there is this inherent thing in so many people to want a clean black and white answer (what’s better barbells or kb), and it’s really not a productive way of thinking.

I think the idea of using a gym for training, i.e. a means to an end, is spot on. Train to live in the world. I wish this was a more mainstream idea. Solid stuff 👊

This is the most real philosophy of being fit and healthy, i totally support this, train for yourself, and only for yourself, an like Joe said,i f you are ready and wanna compete, compete. Dont lift so others can see how much you lift, dont compete if you need to prove someone something, prove only to yourself. Thank you Joe, for this video

Joe, thank you for airing this video, it really mirrors my goals in KB training. At 52 I have returned to training and for me quality of life is what is driving me forward. As a former college football player this is new territory and your videos have been invaluable. But this episode was what I needed to hear.

Seems like people asking this are starting with the results (this guy is big!) and then explain that using their favored approach (barbells are the best). Whereas what you’re trying to do is use your physique for the stuff you love (biking and full body KB workouts) and the results are shaped around that.

Your stuff is *underrated* man, great work! Because of your videos, I've freed my training with kettlebells and it's *much more fun* + I gained muscle over the last 2-3 months. I will buy your training, but I have to ask: _Do you intend to create some courses with Bulgarian bags and maces?_ That would be useful. Also, do you play with sandbags? Thanks, man, keep it honest, great work!
@kettlebellmusclegain

Thanks dean. Yes I know its great quality but I cant stand doing the cheesy stuff it tskes to make it big on IG and RU-vid lol. Ive used maces and Bulgarian bags, sandbags since 2010 I can for sure make some programs if there is the interest. I have a few rogue 80 lb bags etc.and ultimate sandbags.

I noticed the main kb muscles got a lot denser after training for a while….I bet it’s type 1 vs 2 fibers, and not a pump.

Hey Joe do you know of any good adjustable KBs? I've been looking into the Strength Tools plate loaded KB, but its pricey. The Rogue Pin also looks nice, but it can't be used for swings.

So.. I am about two years into this now. I am about to ramp up long cycle training and work my way up to 8 min sets with the 32 kg bells using Denis Vasilev’s programming (but much longer; I am in my 40s). However, I started incorporating Olympic lifts and really want to begin integrating that. Am I crazy to want to just practice weightlifting technique with lower weights on off days for the next six months while I train long cycle, and then switch gears, with maybe lighter biathlon training on off days between serious Olympic weightlifting training days next Summer? Or is this just crazy talk?

Absolutely. I was asking about that on this channel about a month and a half ago, and now I've been doing his recommended 50 heavy KB swings daily, and I've put on like 10lbs of muscle in my shoulders, core, and lower back, all without feeling completely wasted and tired from heavy deadlifts

so I have a pair of 35lb cap kettlebells, and a couple of bands and that's basically it, I'm doing the armor building complex odd intervals 2-1-3 clean press squat, even intervals 8 suitcase swings, @ intervals for now going to shorten the intervals later, followed by a couple sets of double ohp 5-8 reps, maybe a couple of sets of floor press 5-8 reps, and a couple of sets of rdl using both kettlebells 5-8 reps and and I'm wondering what you think I should add or change, also its bloody cold where I live and I can reach the ceiling where I'm able to train so I'm worried about doing snatches, don't wanna accidently put a bell in the ceiling because of sloppy form, (also Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday are the most convenient for training)
