A short tutorial on how to make photos of Northern Lights. You will learn my two major tips and all the settings you need for your camera. All my photos in that video were taking in Inukjuak, Nunavik.

From the photo examples, it appears that the 10 second exposure produced the best clarity - Obviously this could be because the Aurora is moving more slowly - Are my observations correct?

Probably more because of the low iso, but also with slow moving aurora

Seen so many of these. There's only one "tip" which happens to be more of a warning. Don't be fooled by your displays. They can be incredibly bright in the dark even with the histogram buried to the left.

hi sylvain if we apply the 500 rule then 500/11mm =45 sec exposure and if we apply the 1.5 croping for Nikon it will be 30sec .Either way this will attract star trailing.However you chose 10sec for the first one and it was very good.Some how the the others unfortunately were not so great.is there is a reason.

Low iso and longer exposure will produce better sharpness and quality overall, but with slow moving aurora. If faster moving aurora, use faster speed and higher iso. There is no perfect setting for aurora. You have to make test.

salut sylvain, les smartphones d'aujourd'hui stabilisent automatiquement pdt les pauses longues, donc pas besoin de tripod :)

Pour une exposition de 3-4 secondes, ça va être difficile d’avoir de la netteté. Et les petits capteurs des smartphones ont une image souvent très bruitée pour des photos en pleine nuit.

Is it good enough using f2.8 max aperture lens with iso higher than lens with f2.0 (or f1.8) lower iso?

Lower iso is always the best, so with larger aperture yes

Allo Sylvain, pour mon prochain strecht, j'aimerais commencer à m'équiper pour prendre des photos dans le nord. Aurais-tu des produits à proposer pour un debutant et des équipement, genre lentille, flash etc...:) merci

Ce que je trouve important ici, c'est un appareil qui a une bone pile. Le froid est très éprouvant sur la charge d'une pile. Mon Nikon D7100 est un tank qui résiste à tout donc parfait pour les aurores boréales et les nuits glaciales. Je viens de m'acheter un Sony RX-10 IV avec 3 piles. Avec un zoom de 24-600, je n'ai pas besoin de traîner des objectifs supplémentaires lors de mes excursions. Un bon trépied est essentiel aussi, comme le Sirui.

but if you are shooting raw does the white balance efect your pictures?

Yes, and no. You can easily correct your white balance in post. Once you make your Snow White, it’ll change the hue of the auroras, and they may look slightly blue. Often the snow reflects the green color of the Aurora. Personally, I correct for the snow, but each their own. www.icloud.com/sharedalbum/#B10GPCdxkGHJvmR

I always use the same wb, never auto, for northern light so it wont change all the time while shooting. After I will modify it in post processing
