Saucony Xodus Ultra 2 vs Merrell Agility Peak 5 review. Regular viewers of the channel will be well aware that I am a massive fan of Saucony's Xodus Ultra and Xodus Ultra 2. They've got me through lots of tough challenging miles over the years, including Endure24 and the TDS at UTMB. The shoes have never caused me any foot issues and tend to be my go-to shoe of choice when it comes to running a long way. However, there's a new kid on the block - the Agility Peak 5 from Merrell. I've really been enjoying the running miles in these lately and I've found myself reaching for them more and more for my long runs. So I guess the question is, which pair of trail shoes is the best?
Thanks for watching, we'll see you in the next video and as always - stay safe and keep on running!

Overall, I think the xodos ultra is the better shoe for an ultra trail. The only disadvantage is the outsole, which unfortunately isn't optimal on wet rock. Unfortunately, I miss the stability a bit with the Merell. But it's great that there is now such a large selection of top-performing shoes that there is something for everyone.

Going to give the Merrell a go, just ordered it. I was pretty disappointed with the Xodus Ultra 2. Fell apart after 120 miles, both the upper and midsole. It's a shame because it really is comfy! Never would have looked at the Peak 5 without your review, seems like a solid shoe!

what can i say Loyd! Last year on "Olympus Vertical" running with Saucony Peregrine10, i won from Merrell's single lottery the Agility peak4. Today on a local mountain trail, (running with the Peak4) i win AGAIN from Merrell's single lottery the Peak5!!! LooooooL what a luck! I've watched your peak 5's videos Loyd many times, so i think somehow you brought luck to me, thanks!

Fantastic review, really like Merrell sole especially the width as it’s got that slight Hoka look. The Merrell is a serious potential buy for me as I having ran in Hoka trainers for the past 6 years I feel that Hoka are not as durable as they used to be. I get the feeling that Hoka are more interested in fashion and general lifestyle than running.

Great vlog as always 😎 I love the Saucony XU2, I have put over 925 km on them so far and that includes few ultras including the first half of the Kerry way ultra (101km) super comfortable with no issues 😎 I had to switch out of them because of the bogs 😄 and then I did the next 50 km in the Saucony XU Runshield and then finished of the race in a pair of Speedgoat 5’s 😎 I would have happily run the whole 200 km in the Saucony XU2 but the bogs destroyed them and I had no choice but to change to to save my feet 😅 the only issue I have with the Saucony XU2 is the grip, they are great on most terrains but absolutely useless on wet boardwalks 😅 I have the Wicklow Way Ultra (130km) starting tomorrow evening (Friday 13th of October) and my plan was to wear the Saucony XU2 but unfortunately there is a good bit of boardwalk on this trail so I’m now thinking I’ll have to go with the Speedgoat 5’s just for that Vibram grip 😎 the upper on my Saucony XU2 has ripped on both shoes in the same place so hopefully the next rendition of the shoe will sort that out 😎 love the channel 🤘😎 happy running 🙂

I gave the Merrell a try and really struggled with ankle lockdown, as much as I wanted to love it! I can see why you would if the ankle area works well. It seems to have been mentioned in a few other places once I started wondering if it was just me. I tried a runners knot, but due to the tongue being rather thin, it was biting much more than I'd like. I think I might give them a try when the prices drop eventually, but it's just a bit too much of a financial gamble at the moment!

Ive been using the Rift , i actually like the lugs better on that shoe compared to the Xodus2. The Rift has wider lugs and like others mentioned, if they did the lugs with vibram material it would be one heck of a shoe
@guzgrant
@guzgrant 8 месяцев назад
I had the Merrell Skyfire and regard it as the slipperiest trail shoe I had ever used on a wet day . I also had the Longsky which gave me blisters and felt sort of elongated and folded in as the shoe flexed . So I would love to try a Merrell I didn’t dislike .

I can’t believe the Xodus and Xodus Ultra 2 had been dethroned!!! 😂 whenever I try other trail trainers they don’t seem to have the same feel and bounce, I still use the XU1 and I think it’s an ever better option than the XU2. Loads of trainers like speedboats have too much foam and not enough bounce, the vibram grip on the saucony trainers would be a good idea! I’m glad you’re happy with the new Merrells….but did you run 80 miles out the box in them…eh? 😆

@@alecchurch67492 things to add: I went to a store yo buy Speedgoats... and got Mafate⁴ instead. Better upper (more space for small toes, good width), better midsole (a neat mix of a pillow & bounce, instead of that aggressive rocker). If Merrel = SG, M⁴ wins Now, the Xodus feels more nimble. I praise the midsole, great lugs & grip (though not as good as M⁴). I have a winterized version - I'll test it more to say which is better. For now Mafate is my choice for longer races.

They look like what the speedgoat 5 should have been instead of what hoka turned it into. I like the xO2, and I have been playing with the salomon thundercross lately, but my all time fav was the SG2 and have not yet found anything to fill it’s spot - perhaps the merrel could finally be it.

I'm not seeing much discount from MRRP on the Merrell's but I got my Xodus Ultras for £65 a couple of weeks a go, that makes a big difference, although I still prefer my Hoka SG5's for grip, although the Xodus do feel like they will last longer.

Love the Xodus (1 and 2, just a tad less) but the outsole durability isn't there on the Pwwrtrac compound from Saucony. Give me 20-25 miles and I can wear down the back lugs, no problem. They need to address that for version 3 of the Xo. Might give the Agility Peaks if I can find a good sale, later. Good review!

Ouch! I've done 550km in my current pair of Xodus 1's on a mix of trail, mud, gravel and tarmac and the back lugs are virtually like new. Even the most worn of lugs around the middle and front of the shoe still have around 2-3mm of tread left.

Tried the previous AP4 and had an uncomfortable hard midsole with poor heal lockdown and sold them on. Awesome content as always!! Am I the only one who think the XU ver.1 is superior to the XU ver.2 ?? I have both, and I like the feel grip and durability of the originals over the ver.2 Ultras. Saucony fits me *exquisitely* so I'm always apprehensive to swap brands. Just wish the XodusUltra 2 didn't crap out as soon as it's seemingly doing. The Xodus Ultra 2 is only let down by the lack of any traction on wet surfaces. There appears to be no tackiness to the rubber at all. Other than that I'm still happy with mine with over 350 miles

Agree. Running V1 and wet grip is the main weakness. It's also a shoe feeling heavier than the weight suggest as there's a lot of upper, but ride is great.

short review after 200km in the AP5: + good cushion + very good foot ptotection, especially from the bottom (thx rock plate) + enough room in the toebox (more than a mt cushion 2 f.ex) + good wear resistance from the outsole + good grip on soft ground - destroyed an eyelet after 100 km. Got a new pair under warranty. OK, nice from them, but way too thin material on there - poor grip on wet stones. Lugs are too far from eachother, I think not enough rubber on the ground. - too stiff outsole for technical, rocky terrain. A little more flex (like a Genesis for ex.) would be nice. Even after 100k, no change from new - not the most stable shoes, especially on rocky terrain. way less than MT Cushion 2. - poor heel hold. Runnners knot does help a lot, but you sacrifice comfort from the upper. Tricky to find the sweet spot. Size is perfect, yhat's not the cause of the slip. All in all, I give them a 7/10, mixed feelings....

@@Run4Adventure I'm with you abaut this, I don't understand.
