My Unorthodox Life star Julia Haart is ANGRY. She is now a fashion mogul and reality star. But she grew up in an ultra orthodox extreme Jewish sect that forced her to be 'modest', and had to learn how to start again with her new life in the outside world. She went on to be CEO of fashion company Elite Model Management (EMM), and create and star in her own Netflix series My Unorthodox Life. Since escaping from the Haredi community, she has worked with Kendall Jenner and Naomi Campbell among other top models.
#unorthodox #hasidic #judaism
Get her book Brazen: brazenbook.com/
You'll have seen Julia Haart making appearances on The Ellen Show to discuss her Full Circle moment, and the Tamron Hall Show to talk about the root of her divorce, not to mention Family Feud, where she appeared with her family. Her kids include: Shlomo, Miriam, Batsheva and Aron.
It's like the Netflix Hasidic Jews documentary series Unorthodox or famous ex-Hasidic Jews Shloime Zionce and Lev Tahor (from the Lev Tahor documentary). This is like a look inside the home of an orthodox jews family - hanging with the hasidics.

Religious extremism of any faith can be dangerous.

A true religion supports both genders. But when it favors one gender above another, then it becomes a weapon of power, subjugation, and unquestioned abuse. This is not limited to any one religion. My family was RCC on both sides. They told me I didn't need to be educated because I would get married and "some man" will take care of you. I put myself through college on a work-study program while carrying 18 credit hours per semester, and holding a weekend job waitressing. When I graduated, neither parent showed up or had anything nice to say like "congratulations". As long as I lived under my father's roof, boyfriends were discouraged, and any male friend who came to see me was driven off with overt anger and abuse by my father. I never married until I was 35, and had moved from NY to Hawaii to get away from them to do it. They always preferred their religious dogma to being happy. I once wrote in my diary, "In this house, the only emotion you are allowed to feel is depression." This is something I saw throughout my whole Irish Catholic community. Religion, at some point, no matter how good the initial intent, always seems to eventually fall into the wrong demanding hands that insists on winners and losers. Thus far, women, in general, are the ones who end up with the lion's share of responsibilities, work, burdens, subjugation, and oppression. This class of people are expected to mold themselves around whatever the other gender is doing, and sacrifice themselves and their dreams for the sake of the happiness of others. I think this is changing, and there are those females who are off the rails, but they're not representative of the whole nor do they tell the story of the many who have and do suffer in silence.

The community Julia grew up in was not extreme. Maybe her family was but not her community. She was not honest. Most orthodox Jews do not grow up the way she describes. Judiasm is extremely pro women and pretty much all of the garbage Julia puts out about the laws of judiasm are either straight up nonsense or lacking context. (Edited for grammer)

Exactly! I am a Christian woman who has never married. Finding a man who understands the difference would be pretty challenging all right. Unfortunately a Christian guy might forget the rest of it: This husband should love his wife as he loves himself: he nourishes and cherished her as Christ loves his church. That’s how it is supposed to be but doesn’t often happen.

I was raised Catholic; my mother, especially, wanted me to be silent and subservient. I was to be her constant assistant and relieve her of many duties so she could focus on my brothers and an extremely active social life with my father. Strangely enough, she also wanted me to be financially independent from the family, about age 10. She stressed doing for myself and living a life of work, in the home as well as out. Needless to say, there was tremendous conflict.
@Katfancy40
@Katfancy40 6 месяцев назад
How on God's green 🌎 did she expect a child of 10 years old to be financially independent? That's absolutely insane and cruel and horrible. I honestly hope that you do not have contact with her because she clearly doesn't deserve to have you as her child. My mother and her siblings were raised in a strict Catholic household until my grandparents divorced, my grandma's idea, and there were 2 girls and 3 boys and my oldest Aunt parented her siblings more than my grandmother did unfortunately and my grandfather traveled for work and was in the national guard and wasn't home a lot and everyone struggled being raised by them. My father's side was raised Catholic as well and strict but his parents stayed married for 63 years until my grandfather passed in 2014 and my grandparents from that side were very different to say the least and they both raised their 3 children.

This is heartbreaking. One of my best friends went the other way. She was brilliant and talented. After a year of college she emigrated to Israel, to a commune, with her parents’ blessing. She actually planned that as a way to get over there to stay, but they would not have supported the trip had they known her plan. She met and quickly married a man who was 3 weeks from his 20th birthday. In his sect, he was required to marry by that age. The men hold weekly prayers in the ancient hills. I don’t know if she was happy or if that word even remained in her vocabulary, but she felt she was doing what was right.

What a great interview! It's so wonderful that you were really able to discuss so many things in depth. I have a lot of extended family who are pretty extreme Christians, and there were many similarities to Julia's story. My cousin sewed a dress for her math exam at 16, and she's now 32 with seven kids. She married at 19 and never really had a choice about it. She's now raising her daughters the same way. Happiness is not important or even considered selfish. You should be happy with serving God and your husband because they always have to have a headship as a woman. They don't associate with anyone outside of their extreme ideas of Christianity unless it's a superficial conversation to try and convert you, but the pity that Julia talked about in her group towards non-religious Jews, I knew exactly what she was talking about just in a very different context. The beliefs are different, but the tactics are the same. It's so important to show the problems of fundamentalist groups. There are many beautiful and fulfilling ways to be Jewish, Christian, Muslim, Atheist etc. But religions or ethical systems can also be implemented in really harmful ways too, and it's important to talk about it because the people inside don't even know what choices and ways of thinking that are being taken away from them.

I was expected to 'get a Jewish man' and breed her a great-grandchild. It meant nothing to her that - due to illness I was born with and lifesaving operations I had to go through - I was infertile and would never be able to breed AT ALL. No. That wasn't important. She actually said to me, 'If you get with a Jewish man, then you'll get pregnant.' She hated the fact that my parents encouraged my independence, sending me up to college in London, far away from home. I was going to be in contact with lots of gentiles and learning stuff..... She ruined being Jewish for me. All the patriarchal pressure came from HER. I grew to hate her, and even hate being Jewish. I've had to unpack so much misery from my past. My best revenge is to live my life. Julia's a strong, articulate and brilliant woman!!!!

Our school pushed for us to go to college and those of us that chose to not go to college for whatever reason were looked at funny 😅 I chose to date and married who I wanted, who I loved and felt that we have the same interests for our futures. Until this day we lead orthodox lives and its beautiful💖

That's because Julia is making up a story to a large extent. You were encouraged to go to college right? Was your brother? Or was he told he must study Gemara every second of his life. She is portraying this as a gender thing, but she has it backwards. The boys have a worse life than the girls.

I met an African American in college. We got along well. He didn’t dress like a Jewish man or act like one, but he talked to Jewish people. My friend said that she would only date him if he was Jewish. I noticed the a lot of people were prejudiced against my nice friend. And that’s sad. Why do I have to marry a Jewish man? I never dated a Jewish man after I lost touch with the nice African people man. I wonder what would happen if he was reading this and understood that I liked him.

Her story about the blessings lacks context. The meaning behind the blessing, which is taught in kindergarten when the blessings are introduced, are not about men being better. Women are held with extremely high regard in judiasm and are considered to be more naturally spiritual and connected to God. Both men and women are unique and special and deserve respect. There is no gender that is better in judiasm but any man who grows up in a healthy Orthodox Jewish home will be taught to give his wife absolute respect and love. Marriage is about working together and their is no one person who is more important. Judiasm actually shows unusual sensitivity and respect towards women for those (unlike Julia) who actually bother to listen to and learn about Judiasm.

But what is she talking about. Id say most of the women she grew up with are mostly professionals except for those who chose to be stay at home moms. In any given Jewish family typically one sister would be an SLP, one a CPA, one a PA, one a real estate broker and one an LCSW. Then you have you actuaries, lawyers, private entrepreneurs, PTs, OTs, just to give a typical description. The info shes providing is not convoluted truth but bald face drop your chin to your chest lies.....just a drop of research (i dont even mean RESEARCH, I just mean like 'asking around' and its obvious). Like she just makes this stuff up. Seems to me she felt she was personally a loser her entire life and decided to project it on other people. The fact that all you people commenting dont see through how absolutely NUTS she is is coo-koo, coo-koo.

Girls/women in Jewish schools are given potentially top notch educations (and esp the schools shes attending)......most families have multiple mid/high level professionals making up much of the family. I and most other Jewish women have NO idea of what she describes. Your jaw drops just listening to her make this stuff up. And when you compare to any public school system (okay maybe if you can afford 30k a year tuition you can get something better ....most people cant) CERTAINLY the education is multiple notches better (and we NEVER have to worry about crime, drugs, pregnancy, and weapons either.....enriches the learning environs if ya know what i mean).
