I love unfitted kitchens. When I remodeled my kitchen four years ago I unfitted my kitchen dining area and I have absolutely no regrets. My husband and I Diy’d the majority of it and everything else we bought in thrift stores. I didn’t hide my appliances and they’re stainless steel as well . What I did to tie them in was surround them in vintage furniture and decor example behind my stove I place a vintage mirror, my fridge a vintage basket on it with old rolling pins. I played around with the positioning of the furniture and I found the perfect place for everything. I really believe in going with your heart and surrounding yourself with things you love.

The way you have your kitchen right now, the colors aren’t as cohesive as they could be. I see you like the brighter colors. Can I suggest you get shelves, artwork, plants in the colors you love to tie it in all around the space. Also, make a kitchen sink curtain that extends the whole length of the sink itself. I’d use a fabric that has your cabinet color along with some of the yellow and red I’m seeing. By repeating your colors in different areas, it won’t appear as harsh and actually make it look very cozy. You’ve got great pieces. I would definitely recommend doing the changes you talked about. It will look amazing.

Greetings from the old continent! An unfitted kitchen is an absolute must for every 80/100+ years old house if it is to be renovated in sync with its original character. To me, a fitted kitchen in an old house suffocates it. I am now renovating a 120+ year old German house and hopelessly trying to get an original cast iron sink (similar to yours, though sleeker). Yours is just perfect for the style and age of your house and makes the whole room! Congrats!

thank you for showing us your kitchen. I found it interesting that for every cabinet, appliance or color in your kitchen you had a "I just wish or exception" to why it was not perfect for you. I like the concept of an unfitted kitchen but I am way to OCD for the chaos of unmatching pieces. Good luck on the upgrades but I recommend you make a "style board" for your finished space.

New subscriber here, I love the old houses and, am intrigued how each person styles and designs them. As I watch your video I am going through it with you, and picking out things I like and dislike about it. Each person has their own likes and dislikes about colors, style, and overall appearance. I like how cozy your house is! I love your sink, And work station. I am not a fan of the farmhouse style. I guess I lived that era back in the 50s, I came from a very poor family and everything we had was chipped, worn and needed paint, a lot like the farmhouse look today. I didn’t like it back then I don’t like it today. My house is about 75 year old and I love it. I have it designed in the 40 vintage retro style. I know it’s not for everybody but it works for me. Love your videos!

I have just come upon your channel and I would like to say I appreciate that you have mentioned your husband's likes and desire for the design of your kitchen although your liking is not as his you can live with it. Many times the husband may be or is reluctant to speak his likes. My kitchen is a 1965 u shape. I love primitives and freestanding cabinets, but my husband is one that if what is already there is good and functional why gut it out. He is not a carpenter, although he could do the work, he is a machinist, of the old school and ways. So, I found common ground for us. I did take the doors off all the cabinets, where I have food stored, I hung curtains, I have a few freestanding primitive cabinets. In the small space of the u I put an enamel top table for a work area. I have a flat stove top with a microwave above, took the handle off the microwave, as we do not use it and put reproduction french feed sacks over the door. There is also a dish washer I do not use, and I covered it with a french countryside design fabric. Doing these little things and some others along the way, has brought into my kitchen some of the style and feel I desire and gives my husband much peace. I see too often ones purchase a home which is a great investment, only to gut out what is still good and usable, another great investment to bring about exactly what the wife would like, and does not give the husband consideration. I have been guilty, as I reall never thought my husband really cared, but he does. Love your kitchen. In Joy

I turned my great room (15 x 25) into a free-standing or "un-kitchen." I only paid about $200 per piece for two open hutch china cabinets purchased second-hand from Habitat for Humanity's ReStore. I left them as they were. Added a colonial style table and chair set and a farm table. There's a small area off from the room where electrical wires are gathered. I use that space for a small pantry. All I need to add now is a ceramic tile floor and a farm sink. There was already a 220-240 electric line in the room which at one time was a utility room. There's also a utility sink in the room. So I just brought my stove, fridge, and dishwasher into the room. I took down my kitchen cabinets in my former kitchen and turned that room into the dining room. I turned my former dining room into a living room, and my former living room into a study/library. I spent almost nothing in the grand scheme of things. My house is an old farmhouse built in 1850. Colonial-styled Early American house with chimneys at both ends. The great room and former kitchen areas were an addition to the back of the house. I had to replace the roof which was a complete "tear off" job. So now I have vaulted ceilings in both room which are now the kitchen and dining rooms. That was a separate but necessary expense due to roof damage and leaks. But as to just the design of the utility room now converted into a kitchen, that cost only about $600.
@OldWorldFarmHouse

Whoa that is an incredible amount of work. It sounds beautiful! Congratulations on your thrifty, beautiful, unkitchen!
@rozchristopherson648
@rozchristopherson648 Год назад
@@OldWorldFarmHouse Thank you for your reply. LOL. Yes. it required a lot of moving furniture around. The addition on the back of the house was already there when I bought the house. And I fixed the roof on that a few years ago due to leaks. So the only real expenses I had for the unkitchen were the hutches and tables and chairs. But moving the appliances and furniture around was no joke. Still, it was worth all the effort. I love your kitchen. You gave me a lot of good ideas I can use as I continue with my "unkitchen." 😊

This is a nice modern farmhouse style kitchen. Love the shelf below the work table, and the drawers. This is a 1920s style semi-fitted, not unfitted, kitchen, with your built in cabinetry. If you ever redo your tile, consider doing a running seam; like how bricks are laid. They wouldn't have been laid right on top of each other, you stagger the seam to make the wall sturdier. When you do that with flooring, it feels older as well.

I wanted to make our laundry room smaller when we were building, to allow for a small guest bathroom behind within the exisiting footprint (building is so, so expensive - I would not do it ever again) and now the door from garage into laundry room (which we use daily to come and go) is blocked when I'm at the washer. Like you, I'm fine with it. How often am I actually standing in front of the washer.? And the powder room was completely worth the occasional door blocking. Also agree with you about contractors poo-pooing your vision. I wanted (and still want, someday) soapstone countertops. Everyone was so eager to tell me why my choice was the wrong one. It wasn't in the budget at that time so I settled on Wilsonart laminate in Soapstone as a stand in. I love the look and I still love, love, love soapstone. Someday....

@@OldWorldFarmHouse hi oh well I'm in Scotland so I think you'd probably have to check with your own hardware stores but there will probably be a skid resistant floor paint that might do the trick. My memory stretches back to my days in the boy scouts in the 80s when we were given a former bacon curing factory as a scouts' meeting hall, the floor was painted with some grey paint but when we met, with numerous bodies in a poorly ventilated hall, the humidity would increase and the floor became a lethal skating rink as all the condensation collected on the surface - running around inside was natural to us boys but it could - and did - have severely injurious consequences for those who might have been in the way - lots of busted heads and other limbs! Nobody thought of litigation in those days of course. Probably be a different kettle of fish now. Similarly nobody had heard of risk assessments or health and safety so it probably wouldn't happen now. I'd definitely still recommend an anti skid paint as in a kitchen you might still get a degree of condensation from boiling pots etc and it isn't a nice thought to have a twisted ankle as a result of slippery paint on tiles. My wife and I have just bought a 1960s house with a modern kitchen and I'm intent on ripping it out at some point, to create a more individual and personal space, like what you've achieved. It's great what a person can do and no reason to follow the crowd in these things! I'll be watching your other videos, wishing you every happiness and joy. Gavin.

Lol. Beautiful kitchen. Cute kitty under the great work island. You should check out farmhouse vernacular. Same great idea of unkitchen design.

I love unfitted kitchens. They exude an air of warmth and charm and it's easier to redo it part by part. I disagree with you about French door refrigerators. My mother and I each had one and we absolutely hated the freezer part. It was hard to find things. Food would slide to the back. The door often didn't close properly. When it came to replacing them, we opted for side-by-side. It's so much more convenience. If I had an unfitted kitchen, I'd like to have a Smeg fridge. On the other hand, appliances don't last long these days, so my inexpensive side-by-side is fine. Also, my kitchen doesn't have much counterspace. Most don't, and every picture of a kitchen in a real estate listing shows nothing on the counters to make them look bigger. Anyway, I also think that dish drainers are not very attractive, so I either wash my dishes by hand or put them in the dishwasher straight away.

I so agree! Haha, since I made this video we've had some drama with our French door fridge. I still like them, but yes, you have to be so careful with that freezer drawer or it won't properly close, ugh. After 6 years, our new fridge would not stay reliably cool. We now have a side by side from the 90s (!) that I painted, and it's going strong. 😁 I would so love a Smeg. I have a friend who is designing a kitchen with a very small fridge because she is just going to keep the day's food in that one and store food in some larger fridge/freezers out of sight in the basement. So she is going to go "Shopping" in her basement for the day's necessities and store them in her smaller kitchen fridge. This way she will get more counter space. I agree there is not enough counter space in most kitchens. I don't know how I cooked without my big work table. I love it so much. I wish I had the discipline to put dishes away immediately. Good for you! Kudos.

I love your house and the look of free standing furniture in a kitchen. I do the same in my house. I have a question: what are the big jugs under your counter? Thank you.

Thanks Louise! My husband makes his own apple cider. That’s what is in those jugs:)

Carrara marble !!! Thank God I've finally come across someone who says it correctly !!! It's NOT CARRERA as most Americans call it. It's from CARRARA therefore it's carrara marble. I'm Italian and not far from that area.

Hello Kathleen! What kind of light do you have over your island?

Hello, when I made this video I had a big flush mount led light, but since then it died, and with a lot of these newer lights, when they fail, we discovered that you can’t just replace the bulbs - the entire light fixture must be replaced! They are supposed to last 10 yrs and are warrantied as such, but of course we hadn’t kept the paperwork and we didn’t realize that lights had changed in this way! I say all this bc it’s becoming more and more common snd now Im on high alert to make sure to get fixtures where I can replace lightbulbs and am not forced into buying an entire new fixture! In this case, we replaced it with a big brass chandelier that we had in the attic, and it is working great and I can replace lightbulbs 😀 and I don’t misss the super bright led light, either. It casts quite enough nice, soft light for cooking 😀
