My father was a machinist in the Big WW, in the South Pacific …sometime during my younger years, I ended up with a brand new UNIMAT with all the bells and whistles in a horse trade. I gave it to him thinking he would enjoy having it to tinker with… don’t believe he ever even plugged it in… wish I had kept it now!

Thanks for another brief chapter on the beautiful Unimat. You did a great job mounting it to that table at the right height. With sharp tools and a ridged setup it should do some accurate machining. Maybe not quite a jeweler’s lathe but close. Lighting is good and the microphone was very clear.

Hello: I've owned a Unimat sl 1000 since the 70's. I spent many years making ship models. This machine was indispensable to me. Back around 2005, I thought I needed larger machines. I was wrong. I can get rid of all this stuff, but will never say goodbye to this Unimat. It means too much to me.

I could spend a whole Saturday, just writing in my notebook and drawing up different configurations, shelves, drawers, etc... you might even be able to mount the unimat on the top of a tool box or inside a big drawer to slide it out of the way when not using it. Maybe a fold-out table that comes off the bottom of a toolbox drawer... It would be nice to be able to clean up and leave the shop tidy with not only the tools in the toolbox, but also the machines packed up and away. Can you tell I'm avoiding my spring cleaning by drawing in my notebooks? Time to get out the broom, dustpan, and get to work. Happy Saturday! It may be time to build my own version of the Unimat. (add that as a drawing as well. Thanks for the great videos! )

Just a quick warning to other home shop machinist. I ordered online from eBay some tool holders for my Myford quick change tool post. When they finally arrived, they weren’t even close to fitting. The Unimat is looking good. I'm curious to see how it performs. Re: painting I think you'll be glad you ddn't paint that fine lookin' freebie. You'll find, as I did w/ my Sherline, they are so small you can't find a place to stick a mag base, & when you try a small base, they don't have enough mag to stick well. I have a slab of 1" steel in front of the bed I use for mag bases, & a handy note pad. It's a great place to write things our old brains easilu forget. A coat of paint would just get tore up sliding a mag base on it. Re: vise Looks like a knee knocker to me. You'll find the right side of the lathe needs to stay free of stuff, you're constantly reaching down to move the carriage; (if w/ a power feed, which is a BIG plus), you'll either bonk your elbow or knock to the floor anything placed to the right. I do have a 2" tilt & swivel toolmaker's vise on the left front corner of my bench; I use the heck out of it. It's just big enough for an ER32 Collet block, which I have on my lathe, it's become a much used partner to the lathe. On the left end of my lathe table I mounted one of the shelf like toolholders w/ the holes. Had it for years & never found use for it, but didn't toss it cause it was plastic. It, too, has become a partner to the lathe & vise; I took a step drill &/or saw to any of the holes needing customization for tools to fit. A trick I found is to stick a round tube shaped tooling container you get w/ certain tooling you buy in one of the holes. They make a handy container for picks, scribes, etc. Enjoy your Unimat, I'll be interested to see what you think of it. It's a small world for you, now! Way different than what you're accustomed to. LOL GeoD

@@mrpete222 You're welcome. I was able to power the X-axis w/ a small 12v DC motor driving 0.25" cogged belts, the same stuff 3D printers use. It was one of the 1st upgrades I did. I was glad it was after the 1st longish session & could barely lift my arm the next day. You still have to hand crank, but the long traverses & non-contact movement is a lot easier & faster. If you use a 3 position, On-Off-On, switch, it's easy to wire it w/ forwatd & reverse. Gimme a holla if you decide to do it & I can sketch something up for you. I didn't have to modify any parts, just added one to the lead screw end. GeoD

I see that you have a little live center in your picture, I've never seen a factory unimat one, probably pricey. I made mine by turning down one that had a #1 morse taper and then found that little one (like the one I sent for less than $6). There's another one with a 6mm post, the unimat is just over 7mm, and I'm going to put a sleeve on one. I sent you one of those too to check out. That one is readily available online (for like $3-$4) that most viewers could use and might be interested in (and make the sleeve on their unimat). Great job on the videos Lyle. I couldn't hear a difference in the microphones, what every is easiest for you is best here.

The motor casting on mine had been broken and repaired (welded) really ok, but didn't look nice. I finally found a good one on ebay. I almost, just a few days ago, couldn't come closer, to sending you a new magnifying lamp with a 6" glass lens and leds around it. Just when I hit the purchase button, I got a message about my cart, had to go delete some stuff and COULD NOT FOR THE LIFE OF ME find that lamp again. I sent you a length of the 5mm round black polyurethane belt material (ordered one for me too). On my Unimat, one of my belts (the one to the spindle) is loose and as I tried to move it to other positions, I realized that it requires a different length belt. The motor pulley and the idler pulley look to be the same diameters only with one flipped, so that o-ring seems to fit all three of those positions. But, the spindle pulley to the idler pulley is a different length for all three positons. Then, they show going directly from the motor pulley to the spindle pulley and those are different. And finally, they show to remove the spindle pulley and flip it over and some of those are different lengths. My Unimat is an older DB200, Mk 2 so I don't know how it is for some of the other models. I figure I'll just make up some belts. I've only had the one set of o-rings so I just used what positions they fit.

I ordered that long cutting board to use for a base. I told you that my box fell apart and now all the attachments don't have a home and are scattered. I think I'm going to trim the board (base) so it just sticks past the motor pulleys on the left end and maybe an inch on the right, then make a new box so it will all set in the bottom (with the base). It would be kinda neat if it was a chest with a couple of drawers and the lathe in the top (kinda like a kennedy box). hmmm.....

Yea, you inspired me to get out my unimat and fix it up a little. For the longest time I couldn't find a good base and I just found a long 7" x 26" bamboo (looks like butcher block) cutting board on ebay. My belts are loose o-rings, and I just ordered a length of 5mm round urethane belting. You just cut it to length, melt the ends and stick it together and it's permanent (at least it was in the video I watched). I'll send you some of that too to try. I'm sure a lot of people are interested in the belts. I'll paste some pictures in an email that might make it clearer. @@mrpete222

I like ordinary sheet metal screws for most fastening-to-wood jobs. The are much stronger than “wood” screws and available in many more sizes than dry wall screws. And more head styles. They self tap into wood unless you are right near an edge then you might want to drill a pilot hole.

Can I ask about the base on yours, what is it made from? Mine is an older DB200 MK2 and is cast iron and pretty heavy. Heck, I'll toss it on the bathroom scale, 10-1/2 lbs, just the lathe, with a chuck and no base attached and nothing on the tailstock. Seem like I read they started casting them in aluminum? Maybe that was why my box fell apart. It was really heavy with all the attachments and the vertical drill post.
@mrpete222
@mrpete222 5 месяцев назад
Mine is aluminum, I wish it was cast-iron, very lightweight, very flimsy, and lacking substance. I had to mount it on a steel plate to keep it from walking around.
@robert574
@robert574 5 месяцев назад
I don't think they made the cast iron ones for very long. The bottom on mine is kinda narrow and is still back heavy because of the motor (it's an older style black motor too). Once the aluminum one is on a base it shouldn't be a problem. They both need a base.@@mrpete222
