Hi, i'm millie!
I am autistic and ADHD, and I'm trying to leave the world in slightly better shape than when I found it. I am working towards this goal by focusing my life energy and experience as disabled and neurodivergent into disability advocacy work.
If you like what I am doing and would like to support me to be able to continue doing it then any contribution, however small will help make that happen, and you will help me get closer to my dream of a society that is more accepting and appreciative of neurodivergent people and people with disabilities.
Thank you.

Wow, you've expressed accurately what my experience is like with short term memory issues and auditory processing.

Thank you! You totally get it! I actually cried while watching your video because You UNDERSTAND my world because It's your world too. . I think I will make some cards like you did. There are a few that would benefit me. . I use Speech Assistant on my phone, writing, gestures, and Sign Language. . If the other person knows sign language we communicate that way. (That's my preferred communication for quick & simple communicating. . But I use my text Speech Assistant app for the Deep communicating. . Thank you for this video. It really meant a lot to hear from another Autistic Adult who shared personal struggles and solutions for communication. . Very helpful.

Thank you! I just had an episode of selective mutism last month and couldn't figure out what was happening! I'm ASD and can see this occurring many times in the past, now that I'm aware of it, but didn't know this was due to autism or that it even existed. Thank you for sharing and your help!

Hello from Australia! I'm late dx AuDHD and am glad i found your channel and ways you work with selective mutism, something I face more now that I have kids. It sure can feel heavier than word salad , like you said, being hungover without the alcohol first. Definitely going to look up AAC. I also want to learn more signing (Auslan) but my in-laws aren't willing to try and understand my needs, so I'm signing to others who mock and dismiss which sucks.

Aww that's awful that people are responding to you learning to sign like that. You are doing something difficult to improve your life, that should be admired and respected, not mocked! I'm also hoping to learn some signing to use with my family.

I'm so happy that I found your channel! You are so sweet and genuine. I'm a 49 year old mom and I was just diagnosed ASD level 2 a few months ago. I'm currently in mute mode and I cant talk to anyone at the moment. So, you got me to comment which is a big deal for me. Thank you and you make an impact.❤

Aww thank you 😊! I understand that commenting can be difficult so I appreciate that you made that effort for me 🙂. Congrats on your diagnosis as well! That's an intense thing to go through.

Thanks for sharing your experiences! That was very relatable to me. I also sometimes lose my ability to speak (due to autism), especially under stress. I find myself rehearsing what I should say in my head over and over but it just doesn't come out of my mouth. I LOVE the idea of using cards or a text-to-speech app.

thanks for watching and sharing your experience as well! yes that feeling of looping it in your head and it not coming out is so painful hey. Or sometimes I have scripted or rehearsed something and then when I say it out loud it doesn't come out like I had planned at all. I like that the cards and TTS apps are a fairly low cost option to try to start. Some of the more medically oriented AAC apps and devices can cost thousands of dollars but i'm getting along so far with the free or lost cost options.

Thanks for giving us a glimpse into your world and how you work it to meet your communication needs and wants. Speaking shutdowns can be quite distressing at times and awkward when you just cannot "get it out". The ability to take a recharging break preferably alone which does not rule out sensitivity to others expectations in communicating but provides a well needed pause. Social Anxiety will at times raise it's ugly head no doubt. Explaining that your brains wiring becomes overheated and simply has to shut down, "its neurology, not antisocial behavior" seems to put the matter in a less judgemental frame of reference. The two sided card seems great when I reach that point . Thanks. The AC apps also are something we have a opportunities to familiarize others to as an alternative and increase their comfort interacting with as a side of communication possibilities and fairness.

Thanks for watching Peter and for your insights! These situations do get so awkward and distressing and it makes me think of all the people going through this that have never had the support to figure out ways to make it less so.

sorry you've had to deal with this as well, it's so frustrating! I just suffered the consequences when I was younger and have only in the last few years been able to work on strategies but yes recent technology and more awareness and understand is helping. Still a long way to go as well! I'm privileged that I can have an OT but I have to pay out of pocket (parents pay for some of my medical that I can't afford) so it's out or reach for so many people.

When I can't speak it's because: I'm so overwhelmed and already used all my words and can't think of anymore without repeating myself. I have what I want to say in my head in video and pictures but I can't recall the words to go with those videos and pictures. Often times I hear others say what is in my head that I could not find words for. I don't know if the above is what your video is about or not.

Thank you for sharing your experience! I find what you are saying really relatable, especially the part of being able to have a mental picture of something but not being able to find the words to describe it. I also very much have that experience of a quota of words or speaking out loud I can do...i start getting all jumbled after about an hour on a good day, and then some days I can't speak much at all the whole day.
