In this video, I show and discuss my emergency car kit. This kit is always evolving as I learn new things and my traveling situations change. You will see in the video that my stuff is heavy on military surplus which is my hobby and that I realize while filming that I don't have a first aid component in my kit. That will be rectified very soon. I hope you enjoy my video.

Great kit. I would add a second canteen cup and lid to the canteen kit. It's far more than worth the bit of extra weight. I know from experience that having one cup full of food, and a second full of tea or coffee or hot chocolate makes life much easier and more pleasant. It also means you can move faster, and this can be important I carry the Russian mess kit with a G.I. cup and stove down in it. You can't have too many containers. I would strongly suggest using 190 proof grain alcohol in your Trangia. It not only burns better than any other fuel, but it's child safe, and emits no harmful fumes of any kind, which means you can use it in an enclosed space such as a tent, or even a car, with proper safety precautions. It can also be used medicinally, and it good for treating shock. It does cost more but I think it's well worth the price. The Swiss poncho works, but it's nowhere near as versatile as a G.I. poncho. Two G.I. ponchos makes a complete shelter in a number of ways. You can snap them together to make a pup tent, or a large tarp[. You can wear one and use the other as a tarp. You can use one as a ground cloth and the second as a tarp. You can snap them together in a different way and make a wearable shelter that can get you through a survival situation should you be injured. On and on. I made it through more than eleven months in the wilderness all by myself with only a pair of G.I. ponchos for shelter. And, yes, you need a good first aid kit, and it should contain a blowout kit. You need to be able to stop intense blood flow quickly, and without a tourniquet.

Nice man. Most people underestimate the importance of having supplies in your car but if the need arises you will be very glad that you have them. My various kits are evolving all the time.....

I hope I never have to use them in a emergency situation and I hope I prepared enough. We have it pretty good down here in Florida. At least we don't have to worry about getting stuck in snow and freezing to death or earthquakes. Thanks for taking the time once again to watch and comment.

I like it! Those East German combat packs make excellent modular car bags. I keep the straps wadded up in the bottom so the bags don’t snag.

Since this video I upgraded the straps on this bag that I keep in my truck with some extra ALICE LC-1 backpack straps. Works much better for me and was a super easy install. My other two bags I don't use any straps with. They have the liner in them and I use one of them when I kayak camp on the river. Not water proof but only rain resistant for stuff other than my clothes and electronics. Thanks for watching another video and for your comment!

I may have missed it, but I would suggest at least a Sawyer Filtration system w/accessories to furnish water. You obviously include shelter, but a water source plus a quick easy fire system (such as a Firebox Nano, etc.) would be an easy and relatively easy/inexpensive addition to your kit. Thanks for the super video and extensive details...great addition to my kit! Safety and Health to you and yours always!

Sorry I missed your comment. Just saw it. Yes I mentioned a Sawyer filter. It was in the pouch on the back of the pack. Thanks for the suggestions. This kit is always changing depending on the time of the year. Thanks for watching and for your comment!

just a tip with regard to the toilet paper, you would be better off removing the cardboard insert from the centre of the roll and open the roll so that it feeds from the centre that way you never have to take your paper out of the Ziploc bag so that it doesn't get wet in the rain or messed up.

Great video John.... :D 4:53 actually made from AMK...I think SOL is product line ... ( I think) I would take the child safety off the bic. ( easier to use) 8:17 great ... having it together means with just that alone you can do a lot with. great reusing those bungee cables :D bungee could be used as a sling ( i had to this once when i hit my shoulder on cement hard. 11:00 i actually thought of a lemon shape first lol Things that could be added or sub in for this ... choice is yours.: pry bar this may help An under rated item is an umbrella or umbrella hat.( keep the sun or rain off ) TFS... Looks great setup of gear john .... C.R.

Thanks for watching and your comments. I think you are right that AMK is actually the maker of the SOL blanket. The bungee sling is a great idea and luckily this item has many other uses I haven't thought of yet. Now that you said it, the cutting board looks more like a lemon than a leaf. Lol. A prybar might be a good addition but I would keep it in my tool box in the bed. A cop pulling me over might call it a weapon under my seat. I actually do have a umbrella in my truck but its mostly for my wife so I didn't include it in the video. Other things not included in my video are a tire air pump, a small floor jack, and jumper cables.

Great video John! ...And a reminder that I myself am woefully unprepared. I need to get a kit like this together ASAP. In addition to the first aid kit, I think an inexpensive handgun or may be even an AR-7 .22 rifle that breaks down and packs small would be a good addition should one need to defend themselves or hunt for food... Just my 2 cents... Tim

Tim, thanks for checking out my video! I still cant believe people actually watch my videos and subscribe to me. I'm not a zombie guy or a doom and gloom person so I tried to prepare for what I think I might most likely encounter. The great thing is it doesn't cost much to throw together simple stuff to get started. I am very interested in the AR-7 rifle and I will probably own one someday. But because of my work, you know I can't keep a firearm in my vehicle. But when I'm elsewhere I at least have a carry.

i liked it - i do the same thing. i believe in being prepared, too. i need to get that SOL dbl bivey, too. do you realize that you made this preparedness video just about almost exactly one year to the month before FLA. had that massive hurricane? did you watch on tv. how many people were not prepared? i did. i watched orlando and miami news on the web and i tracked the storm / hurricane from that channel on the web from texas where i live. i hope everybody there is ok after the hurricane? thumbed it up & thank you!

Martina Dejaquiz Everyone is fine. A lot of people had trees down, shingles blown off and some people without power for several days. I had no damage and lost power for only 20 hrs. Thank God! A lot of people panicked with gas and food. Could not find bottle water either before the storm. Then after the storm some people had the nerve to take back to the store all the cases of water batteries and power generators they hoarded to get their money back. Thankfully we were more prepared.

that bath tub water bag of drinking water.... that's worth it's weight in gold. luckily i live on a farm and we have our own water wells. i can draw water w/o electricity. we also have prep water storage long-term and i am stocked on water purification and filtration stuff. i take it serious. i want water (period). i can stuff i grow and store it below ground and i live on high ground. i take that serious too. the lord's been good, but we have to prepare with our own hands too. who knows what can happen. i like water though you better believe that and i want my coffee too. i have water coffee food you won't hear much from me. you're established there. prob grew-up there too. you said you live 3 miles from work. not easy to up-root and may never want to. i've said this to others.... wanna really be prepared????? .... get out of the cities. live in the country. somebody could have to bug-out from anywhere, but most likely from cities and 2-leggers can be a threat as well in dyer situations (sadly). not telling anybody what to do, but just asking them to think about that. cities are where the problems are inherently and bugging-out would most likely be from a city - not a farm way in the country. something to consider - that's all. thanks john and i'm so thankful you, your family and home are all ok from the hurricane. we are blessed by the lord!

For a first aid kit you should pick up some Israeli bandages and a good roll of gauze. I hate to ask, but does the Soviet VDV mess kit canteen fit in a West/East German or a standard Soviet mess kit? I was thinking that I might pick up a Polish mess kit because of the bigger lid and do some modifications. I think it would be very practical to put the inside bowl (of a German kit) into the inside of a Polish lid and put that over the pot and canteen. The Soviet VDV bottom fry pan could also go on the bottom. The only problem would be the two handles getting in the way of each other and not fitting, but that is where the "modifications" would come in. I have a strap, so I was thinking I could hold the monstrosity together with that. But that's just my theory on how to get the best mess kit.
@John-Sherwood-W4JFS

Thanks for the tip on the bandages! I will check that out.I got all my kits out and checked out your request. The VDV kit will not fit inside any of the kits I have. (I own the East German and the Soviet/Russian ones.) The VDV kit as a whole is too tall. When you break down the VDV kit to try the pieces individually, the lugs on the pot with the bail handle are too wide to nest inside the regular mess kit. The VDV canteen by itself is too tall but goes inside and the VDV fry pan almost fits but the handle when folded stops it from going all the way. Unfortunately I don't own a Polish mess kit yet. I'm not sure if its larger or smaller than the kits I have. I hope I was some kind of help to you. Good luck on building your custom kit!

+John Sherwood Thanks. I'm currently waiting for a VDV kit to come in the mail. Maybe I'll send you a photo of the kit if it works out. I don't plan on having two pots, but I do plan on two fry pans. I think the canteen in the VDV kit is so vital because you NEED extra water to cook. If you have a chance, check out Israeli first aid. Israel makes all sorts of good medical supplies in general. If you plan on preparing for gun shots, remember there will be an exit wound. These usually bleed more. Most Israeli bandages have only one gauze pad, so try to find one that has two pads. I have some Israel Defense Forces bandages, but I recommend the ones with pressure bars, because not all of them have that. But unless you buy the green ones with Hebrew instructions on them, this shouldn't really cross your mind.

Would that AK pouch hold a Russian vdv canteen? I've been thinking of getting one and would like a better way to carry it.

@John-Sherwood-W4JFS 4 года назад
jwatson15 Why yes it does! I got both out and tried it. You had a great idea there. My E. German AK-47 pouch still holds one of my US canteen and cup systems and the Russian VDV fits in there even better. You will need to modify the pouch like I did in one of my videos to make it work. I also have a nicer shoulder strap on my pouch now.

@@John-Sherwood-W4JFS just found out something nice. I just recently bought a self-reliance Pathfinder canteen set. I was nicely surprised the canteen set fit inside the AK pouch. It fits snugly and tight because the canteen is a bit bigger then a US GI canteen. It even fits the lid for the cup.

jwatson15 Sorry about the late reply. That’s good to know. I’m glad it fit. I would have guessed it did not knowing the kit is larger than the USGI. Thanks for the info and I hope you enjoy it!
