Wow, this is neat! Not only the practice routine, but also keeping track of it in a bullet journal! I wish I had done this when I took lessons. I thought about it now and then, jotting down when I learned what, but never got around to it. I believe this would be very valuable to look back on after years or after a hiatus in violin playing (also due to illness, work etc.) to see what took how long, what was learned when, what tips the violin teacher gave! Especially the last point, I never wrote down, always only memorized that. Now I do have books about practice, but reflecting on the things I learned in my lesson would have been of a lot more personal value!

Well, I'll be honest: I did this for only a few months and then I stopped. But it is indeed very handy to take notes of what you have practiced.

Thank you for sharing your ideas on effective practice! Recently I have become very lazy and only practiced a little... maybe I should start a journal like yours to keep me on track! I really like that you kept your jump scare in the video, too! Your videos are very relaxed and natural; very easy to watch :)
@MarijkeViolin
@MarijkeViolin 7 лет назад
Glad you like it! :-) I have lazy days too, or I'm not sure what to focus on. But then I open my journal and see what I have to practice and it becomes much clearer. I leave it open on my desk while I practice and after every subject I take a mini break to color one of the boxes and to relax a bit before I continue. It feels like making steps everyday and that motivates me. I hope it works for you as well, give it a try. :-)

Hiii, I have a few tips for shifting. Shifting is a really big struggle for new students, it is usually best to start off by playing a 2 octave C major scale starting on the G string and going up on the E string. This introduces them to new finger patterns and higher notes which I am assuming you understand. Now, shifting into 3rd position is the hard part, there are 2 kinds of shifts, the French/Classic shift, or the Russian/Romantic shift. The French shift is what is taught the most since it builds REALLY good habits. It is shifting on the last finger down and then ending with the actual finger playing the note, this shift makes it considerably easier to find the shifting note. For example, start with the open G, play a scale up to B natural, now, shift up using your 2nd finger and find D natural. Now that you found D natural, you will know that C natural is one whole step below it, so use your 1st finger. If you don't find the D natural with your 2nd finger coming up from the B natural, it will make a lot harder to find C natural with your 1st finger. Once you can comfortably find D natural with your 2nd finger, do the shift from B natural, but don't actually play the note, just move your hand up to the position to play D natural with your 2nd finger, then place the 1st finger down to play the C natural below it. Phew that is a lot, but I can guarentee that your teacher knows about this technique to shifting, ask him if you are confused. Russian shift is used to make slides and for single finger shifts, this is used in more romantic pieces such as Sibelius or Bruch. This is considerably more difficult since you don't have a guide finger and is only used in ridiculous shifts such as 1st finger D natural on the A string up to a 1st finger G natural still on the A string, (Yes, you will be doing this once you start 3 octave scales and arpeggios) , so don't worry about this one for a while. Sorry if this is confusing, but is harder to explain through a youtube comment than in person but I am sure your teacher knows about these techniques, don't be afraid to reach out to your teacher if you are struggling!!! Cheers! -Aaron

Wow, you are so organised - I have a kind of order to my practice (basically the order my notes are from my last lesson which is normally - scales, pieces (+ any exercises I've been shown to improve technique for those pieces) - (we've finished the tutorial book series we were using). And finally if time my own pieces. Love the idea of using a bullet journal to track what you're practising - makes my notebook seem very unorganised :) Oh and the ending was brilliant!

Sounds quite similar, good job. 🙂. I think most practice routines are similar to this, I wanted to present it neatly and clear in my video. Well, I'm just that autistic in a way that everything I make should look pretty (and that's also the graphic designer in me). If your way of keeping notes works for you, don't worry. 😉 Happy practicing!

Very nice exercises and structure! I play violin since 15 years now and I think no matter how well you play this structure will always help you to improve. However I would advise you to pay a little attention on your fingers of your right hand, they look a bit tight and should be rounder, this will really improve your sound. Playing plane strings and focusing only on the bowing will help you to do this :) Fontinue practicimg like this and you will soon play even more beautifully 😉

I can't handle playing scales and also untuned playing it exhausts me. I think i am not good for playing violin 😑

If it's exhausting, it means you're learning. 😉 But yes, it can be a pain to practice. Short and often is better than long and less often.

You should to study the susuki metodo

Suzuki seems to be more suitable for children, so I've heard. I have the Metz violin method and just finished the 2nd book. My teacher said I can start in the Wohlfahrt study book from here. I like the way he teaches me, so I don't feel the need to explore different methods.
