DO NOT USE the DOD/AFM Delete Plate with AFM lifters after performing a lifter release or it will collapse the lifters after some run time . Speaking from Experience. Thanks for all your help @CrazedPerformanceRepair
@@CrazedPerformanceRepair I have a 2017 GMC 1500 5.3. With 18000 miles on it valve train is working good and I turned of the afm by superchips flash pac no tuning just shut off and adjusted for tire size. Should I buy the screen delete spacer you show in this video? Or just leave it alone?
@@CrazedPerformanceRepair thank you for your response. I was just thinking about that screen filter getting plugged up. I change my oil every 5000 miles so it never gets to dirty. Thank you Sir for sharing your knowledge.
Used the 'Tool' and released the #1 cyl lifter....blocked the VLOM with the provided piece. Disabled the DOD with my Flashpaq 4....2 weeks, 0 issues. Thanks Chuck
Love Crazed Performance Repair saved me thousands doing myself. Dont forget the reason for this lifter release trick and VLOM mod is the oring in the oil pick up tube. My 07 had it after I repaired Oil pressure has reacted like a normal truck 28 psi at 600 rpm 45 at 2500 rpm
Thanks for all of your informative videos. My girlfriend had a lifter collapse in her 07 Tahoe. I tried the release trick and it didn't work. So I tore the head off replaced it with a factory lifter only because funds were tight. I plugged the oil passage. Sent the computer to the guy who you recommended. Put everything back together. She's put a few thousand miles on it since without a single problem.
Did you cut the gaskets on the vlom also. I bought a kit to replace all the lifters using afm lifters. It came with a new vlom. Not sure if I want to cut the gaskets on a brand new vlom. Can I just install the plug? I have already sent my ecm to get the afm deactivated.
A friend of mine repaired a lifter failure on a 2015 Yukon. The pushrod bent, the lifter came apart. He replaced 4 lifters, 1 pushrod, and the VLOM. After the repair was completed, he gets a misfire code. He checked compression on the 4 cylinders, all 4 made over 200 lbs. but still has misfire. He didn't do a DOD delete
Thanks for the chat on the phone, Charles! I sent a small appreciation the other day for your vids but will send another couple amounts now bc the settings limit amount and are showing Canadian dollars only so it will probably be non rounded converted amounts. Hopefully work with you in the spring when road tripping. Appreciated, Kris in Squamish, B.C.
So thankful for your videos and the knowledge I have gained. Just very curious after doing the full delete with cam and regular lifters if there is a need for the screen where the oil sending unit goes on a new valley pan without the vlob. Thanks again for all the help!
i got the tool as well… im going to release the unstuck lifter.. but i don’t think imma need the delete… i got it set just right imma go for it im a hundred percent sure its go work
Great videos!!! Thanks for your previous help! I did the VLOM mod and cut the gaskets around the oil towers and removed the solenoids. Also blocked the oil pressure sensor port (cut a wedge out of the passageway from the pressure sensor to the galley that feeds the solenoids, and brazed a solid wedge back in its place while leaving pressure access to the oil pressure sensor). Also used your source to turn off the AFM. My new question is with everything done will this trip a CEL? California smog stations don't use the sniffer on vehicles newer than 2000, they just run a scan at the OBDII port. If the is light on, smog fail...Thanks...
@@CrazedPerformanceRepair Thanks for your quick reply. I did send out my computer to LT1 Swap.com. Already got the computer back. Still need to install. So I should be ok there? Everything else done...Thanks!
Hello I have a 2010 gmc with a 4.8l. I just replaced the cam and lifters due to bad lifter twisting in cylinder 7. And now I have a cylinder 5 and cylinder 7 misfire. I am out of ideas, was wondering if have come across this issue
There are other videos where guys are plugging off the oil passage towers . This may be for the full DOD delete with the DOD lifters replaced with non DOD lifters ! I'm sure this is were your getting the repeated questions from !
I done that I even changed lifers losing oil pressure about ten to fifteen minutes don’t make sense shut it off and turn it back onoil pressure back up to forty any ideas changed pressure sensor too
Excellent information. So, I installed an AFM DOD delete kit with a new cam and non VLOM pan. I'm using a DiabloSport Tuner. My question is. Do I have to keep the AFM/DOD solenoid connected in order to not have a check engine light on?
What doesn't make sense, if I did a complete lifter delete, and I'm plugging the holes in the block, why can't I use the original VLOM and block the oil passage from the oil pressure sensor going to the solenoids?
After doing the release trick & modification to the vlom cutting gaskets, plugged hole & put a tuner to deactivate afm/dod is it required to still change the lifters & cam ? How long well engine run with the afm lifters while its in v8 mood all time ?
How did this work out for you? I was thinking of doing the same thing since I only have 97,000 miles and no issues in hopes of maximize my engine life. Or did you have to do a actual full delete with new cam and lifters?
I have my AFM disabled with a tune. Truck had no symptoms of a failing lifter beforehand. My oil pressure it at about 40 while driving and I've already replaced the pickup tube O-ring. If I add the VLOM delete plate will that bump my pressure up some?
Did everything you said so far even tho it broke my heart to break my gasket off lol now just to put it back together, I’ll keep everyone updated on the progress
@@ryantucker406 went good I think I have a vacuum leak tho putting it back together as I am a novice at all things cars. That or this last time my lifter collapsed it messed up internally lol I hope it’s a vacuum leak. It had a hum that comes and goes while in drive at idle. And I change out a lot of stuff on it already. But for sure definitely since I’ve popped the lifter out, did the vlom mod, and tune or dod/afm delete with the edge device, I haven’t had the lifter collapse again 🤙🏽
@@ryantucker406 my lifter collapsed again 🤦🏽🤦🏽🤦🏽I think my lifter is just bad. Ima try to pop it out again. If that doesn’t work ima replace it again *pulls hair out* I think when it collapsed this last time it just broke or something from no oil.
@@ryantucker406 if your truck is paid off tho I recommend swapping out the cam shaft and vlom for a tru v8 that or engine swap. But the cam shaft route is cheaper.
How u sir I’m working on 2011 suburban 5.3 Liz the vlom male connector got damaged I was hoping u can point me in the right direction to find the 5 wire connector. Thanks for any help in advance
Great Video! I have a couple questions though that I'm sure have been answered but I 've read but cant find them. I purchased the lifter release trick and the plug. No luck getting it to release unfortunately. 1. If I do the Vlom Mod including the block off, what term would I use when asking my tuner to delete the system? AFM delete? should it be pretty self explanatory for a knowledgeable tuner? 2. Is it anything to do with E85 capability? never run it either way, just curious. thanks for the knowledge. Hopefully putting her back together tomorrow.
Love all the video's, thanks again! But once i free up the valve, do i have to do the vlom mod still? How long would no mod last? Or how am i to be sure that was the cause of it collapsing to begin with?
The VLOM isn't why it collapsed. Lack of oil pressure during activation is why it collapses. This can be caused from several things but if you want all that message me on my website or search the forum. If you don't do the VLOM mod and tune out of AFM the already internally damaged AFM side of the lifter will collapse the first time AFM activates. So it could fail on first start or shortly after you start driving it but it wont take long. Everything I do has a purpose.
Odd question here - Can a bad dod lifter or valley plate gasket cause low oil pressure? (New pump and oring is installed ) Oil pressure is still 10psi when hot . Considering putting regular lifters and a regular cam this time around when I redo the pump ? Is it worth a shot
I thought same, yet remembered the oil pump for those models is a higher volume pump than non afm motors and apparently is able to keep up with the bleed down from when the afm is activated and also with the vlom modification because the afm is now taken out of the equation. My interpretation anyhow. Great question!
Long story short: I have the plug inserted. Can I take the VLOM plate out and "remove" the plug? I assume some sort of fixturing the plate and carefully drill pressing it out, or based on your helpful experience whats the better way to go? Thank you so much.
so just to be clear i can use this plug method and gasket removal with tune and never have to worry about my DOD system kicking back on instead of doing the full delete? i do not currently have any lifter issues yet and i also currently use the range AFM de-activator but would like to not have something plugged into my rig at all times or spend a fuck load on a full DOD delete lolol
First off, thanks for the videos! I ordered the VLOM mod parts from you yesterday, because of a collapsed #1 intake lifter. Replaced lifter an still didn't do the trick. Start engine and lifter would work for 3 to 4 revols and stop working. Narrowed down to the VLOM solenoids so decided to try your Mod. Question is this..... If the Mod fixes my issue< will this Mod cause any engine lights? What do I do with the plug that ran the solenoids, do I plug it back in? Thanks again for the helpful vids!!!
The lifter could also be spun, you can determine this by looking at the side of the lifter. To see the side of the lifter you need to pull the VLOM and clean out the oil tower of the suspected lifter with cleaner and shop air. Once cleaned you can look down the oil tower and if you see a hole in the lifter it is not spun. If however you see only shiny metal or a flat surface then the lifter has spun due to a bad plastic lifter guide. When this happens you will need to replace the camshaft and all lifters. This would be a good time to do a full AFM/DOD delete where you remove all AFM components and replace them with non AFM components. Did you old lifter have any damage on the roller if so your lifter was spun.
@@CrazedPerformanceRepair lifter is right orientation. Blew air in top of tower on cyl of concern and blew air somewhat easily. Other 7 no air passage with air blower

After I Block VLOM with the VLOM PLUG..Do I plug the VLOM connector back into the VLOM Plate or leave it unplug .. Lifter release easily your tool … I already have it tuned with LT1Swap..
Received my VLOM mod kit with tool today. Found your videos after suffering a collapsed lifter on cylinder 4 last week. Really wasn't hoping to spend the time and money on a full AFM DOD delete where I would use the opportunity to spend big bucks on performance heads and cam. If I had know about his crappy system being such a flaw I would have disabled it long ago. Light taps, heavy taps, big hammer, small hammer, slows taps, fast taps... After about 30 minutes I was about to give up hope and then POP out came the pushrod just like your videos. I sent you a message from the website, but figured I'd ask here. I did the second part of the lifter release to tap it back down a bit, but mine didn't move. Is it possible it just freed itself up to the correct position and didn't overshoot? I bolted the rocker back on and turned the crank over several times. The valve opens and closes fine now with proper tension on the rocker. Computer went off to LT1SWAP this morning before the tools came so I'll leave the truck off until it comes back. Just want to make sure I'm good before buttoning it all back up. FYI, the instructions showed the oil passage block off as in the videos here, but not the gasket mods. I did those because of the videos, of course, but others may not depending on which video they find your site from.
It doesn't always overshoot, you are most likely golden. If you can, bolt the vlom on and use the starter relay to crank it over until the rocker moves about 5 times. Then you are set.
@@CrazedPerformanceRepair awesome. I’ll get the battery back on and try that. I saw a video showing that relay crank. I was afraid to hook up the battery with intake manifold off and energizing the fuel pump. Am I good to go like that?
Good day my friends, in the last year my 2015 GMC SIerra Denali has been repaired 3 times because the liffter of cylinder 7 has been damaged, this has happened three times after accelerating sharply, you could recommend me what to do, the only thing What we have done is change the lifter and obviously this will happen again. I've really spent a lot of money on this.
My main lifter release video at 27:17 shows the VLOM mod. I don't have a specific video because it is solely for the purpose of disabling the AFM system after a failure. It requires a tune and will render AFM system completely unusable.
I’m confused. I’m in the middle of doing a DOD delete on my 17 suburban (5.3 L83) and my kit uses the plugs for the towers. So are you saying I still need to do this vlom mod? For reference it’s a DI motor with the other style so I’ve got the Allen plug.
Hello, first of all thanks a million again for this hack! I'm back a year and a half after releasing a stuck lifter and doing the VLOM mod (07 Tahoe 5.3). Lately I've been dealing with low oil pressure warnings plus a heavy lifter tick only at startup that has grown louder, and I've tried a few fixes... Replaced a bad o ring on pickup tube and replaced oil pump. Tested oil pressure at filter to rule out pressure relief valve in oil pan. It looks like my last resort is worn bearings. Anyway I'm about to get a entirely new engine and my question is can I just plug the passage port on the new engine without removing the VLOM gaskets possibly voiding the warranty, or will the tower passages in the plate eventually clog over time and put pressure back on the lifters?
On a new engine just having system turned off is all that's needed. However, I wouldn't put a new engine in yet. the tick at start up is likely a broken manifold bolt, I have a video on the topic. As for the oil pressure, it's likely the second camshaft bearing causing this. I'm sure you guessed it, I also have a video on replacing camshaft bearings and I talk about it's relationship to oil pressure in it. When doing the bearings it would be a perfect time to do an actual AFM delete. Where you replace camshaft, lifters, valley cover and trays with all non AFM components. Sure you won't have a warranty but you will have saved probably $2500.
@@CrazedPerformanceRepair OK I just watched both videos and I must say you're the man! However with no shop, very little time now and pushing 350k miles on a former rental vehicle, I think I'll go ahead and retire her. Spend that extra for piece of mind on things. But I will feel around my exhaust bolts just out of curiosity. Thank you so much for your help!
Help..I removed valley pan on 2007 Tahoe and I removed the gasket pieces with a chisel but I forgot to order the plug that u have to block oil hole…is that why my truck started smoking badly…please reply..😐
what am thinking , cant you just disable the solenoid in VLOM somehow and leave everything else untouched? like just cut the negative wire or unplug the solenoids so when the car tries to kick down to v4 it cant . I don't think lifters would have any reason to go bad. this way oil would go around everything and lifters would just act like single stage rods . ps thanks for answering another question I had in another video. I still haven't decided what I am going to do with my suburban . I have misfire on cylinder 6 and very rough idle. am driving as is for now with what I can only describe as v7 . definitely less power but oh well for now. love your 5 or 6 vids on this matter
Continue to drive it and risk further damage. Unplugging it just makes computer through codes due to not seeing what it expects. If the VLOM is bad just disabling or unplugging it won't be enough. Tune is needed and vlom mod recommended.
Can you place a 4.8 valley cover in the vlom’s place with the dod/afm lifters still in place. If not can new lifter non dod lifters and push rods be placed in the dod lifters spot and run the original stock cam? Will the computer throw a code with the vlom disconnected even if the dod is shut off with a tune?
No, no, and no. I explained it all in the video. I assume by a 4.8 valley cover you meant non AFM valley cover. I explained what each one does and why.
Hi I have a 2007 avalanche 6.0 non flex fuel my question is, do I need to tune the computer if I only released the collapse lifter and block the oil with the sleeve and break the rings on the vlom thanks do I still need to send the computer
Is a vlom modification necessary if you go ahead and get a afm/ dod delete tune after releasing the lifter but before cranking it for the first time? Would that still protect from it collapsing again?
When doing the dod delete on the 2006 ls4 using a different camshaft and replacing all the lifters back to the normal style lifters and you drill and tap the tower's and block them off with plugs can you still use the original vlom cover with the solenoids removed from it thank you
@@CrazedPerformanceRepair thank you I wasn't aware of there was a drive in kit all most all videos show how to drill and tap them or tig them shut my tig skills are next to nothing lol
I have a 2008 chevy silverado with AFM with 72,000 miles that is using excessive oil and want to disable AFM. several videos recommend driving with transmission in D3. Is this a good idea?
I just had the lifters replaced on my 2010 Suburban, with a 5.3 Vortec. I replaced all lifters, rods, and rocker arms. And, the engine still knocks, with all new parts. The shop couldn't figure out why the lifters still seemed to be stuck. Any recommendations? If I do the VLOM mod and reflash my computer, will that help?
Did it do it immediately after the repair? Was it multiple lifters? Once a lifter fails the system should be shut off even when replacing lifters. The lifters don't fail on their own. They fail from lack of oil pressure during activation.
No!! The holes in the valley supply the VLOM with oil, if it’s plugged, no oil can reach the VLOM and therefore oil pressure will remain the same as is was intended
When doing the Vlom mod to plug the passage, is it necessary to do anything to the computer to avoid a cel? My current issue is number 7 is bypassing oil and activating to both intake and exhaust Do essentially it’s a dead cylinder. I’m assuming that’s needing the vlom replaced… can I get by just plugging the passages in the vlom?
You would need a tune as well. I recommend lt1swap.com for this. However, keep in mind that your situation is extremely unlikely. If you haven't, you should verify that both rockers stop moving. You might only have one that's not moving and in that case it's most likely a spun lifter. This happens when the plastic guide tray fails. If it doesn't happen to be a spun lifter your camshaft will also be wiped out. In that case a full delete would be the best option.
I have a5.3 vortex in my 06 trailblazer and I replaced the lifters but now I am getting a piping noise when it shifts in and out of overdrive but not in 3 Rd if I drive it in that any thoughts
Around how many kilometers or miles in your case would you say this mod would be needed? Or should it be done because of a certain behavior with the engine?
I want to do your VLOM mod on my 2008 Tahoe. I am going to order your galley feed plug, cut the gasket and get the LT1swap computer tune. I plan on leaving solenoids in. After I do all these things can I leave solenoids plugged in the Tahoe harness or do I unplug the solenoids? I looked over your videos and don't see if it mattered or not?
When you do this trick, I think stop working the control the lifting, cause this car release the four lift when you take the foot out the gas on hill down for save gas, what you tell me about this?
I just got a 2015 gmc 1500 5.3 I'm kind of nervous about this happening to my truck I just spent a lot of $ on. Is there anything I can do to help stop this? I plan on changing the oil for sure. Thanks for the advice and time.
@@CrazedPerformanceRepair thanks for your time and videos. Where can I get a tune? Is it widely available as I'm in Alberta Canada. I was thinking about getting a range. Would you recommend this?
@@CrazedPerformanceRepair i got ls7 lifters in the dod delete kit from LSXceleration but they sent plugs instead of the whole valley cover plate. Wonder if i should run the plugs and do the vlom mod, run the plugs with a reg ls3 valley cover or run the ls3 cover w/o the plugs
If I use the Vlom plug, remove the solenoids, and unplug the system. Will I still need to cut the gaskets? I'm getting AFM tuned out of my ecu this coming week.
@@CrazedPerformanceRepair yea they said it could be the vvt actuator or the magnet but I replaced those already but first cylinder 3 collapsed , I replaced it then cylinder 4shortly after that.
@@omararaujo5971 I don't think the lifters or vlom are related. I think you most likely have a bad second cam bearing. I talk about this issue in my cam bearing video.
I have an ‘09 Silverado 1500 with the 5.3 and a stuck lifter in cylinder 7 (intake side). I ordered new lifters from Amazon, thought it was the kit, and unfortunately ended up with (16) non-afm lifters and the (4) trays. I’m needing this truck to drive 3,000 miles (ASAP) to help build a home for my 75 year young parents in Tennessee. Is it possible to use the (non-afm) lifters without changing the cam, reprogramming the pcm, etc…?
If it still has afm. Some 2019 have DFM and it doesn't work on them. There is also a good chance that you just have a bent pushrod because of interference from the factory.
