Bad weather meant that I was unable to get out and complete my Vlog this week, so I review my week in photography and cover the following....
Why I love shooting Leica cameras. I take a look at the Leica M8 and I review a roll of Ilford Delta 400 Pro that I shot on my Olympus OM2n.

A Leica's magic is that it gives you the essentials and makes the photographer do the rest, which makes you hyper aware about exposure, focus and composition. Most of the features of today's "cameras" create separation between the photographer and the act of making an image.

Hi Paul. It has been some years since you’ve put up your RU-vid Vlogs . I keep coming back to them for the inherent quality of the content. The scenes, the camera, the aesthetics, the mood, the advice and guidance, viewpoints and most importantly , the quality of the final images. Amazing stuff. And I keep coming back, time and time again till today . Thanks again. Take care and god bless. Izzy

Your pictures continue to just blow me away. I've really enjoyed the beach stuff. I would like to see some more in land stuff. Street or landscape.also maybe do a series on all of your cameras. I think your channel has really grown. I like your personal touch that it's not scripted. Always keep that personal conversation with us. Paul thanks again for sharing your work it a inspiration.

Since I’ve followed you, Paul, you’ve got a thousand new followers already. In my humble opinion it is a delicate thing to ask your audience about what they want to see. It has two sides perhaps. You have produced content the way you felt it has been right, the way it has hopefully and seemingly been personal to you, and I really do believe that the best thing you can do is to stay true to yourself and keep doing what you love, regardless of what we think. My guess is that us who have followed you have loved your content due to you leading the way, for your honesty, passion and thoughts. However, the moment you realize you are producing content for an audience that has got expectations, while you might want to evolve and move on to a different direction, it might in the long term make you less content with what you are doing. So, really, you have been sharing what has made you inspired on a personal level, and I think that’s usually what creates the best quality results. The audience will (or at least should) follow. Don’t produce for us, even if part of you does it for us :). Just stay who you are, this is your life! I and all the rest of us probably are just grateful for your concern and your asking about our opinion. Hope you understand me the right way. Excellent work so far, and I for one will look forward to more of your creations. Thanks for everything!

Csaba you have just turned the light on for me, you are so right! I have been offering the same advice to others and ignoring it myself. Just a few days ago I told someone to shoot what you feel is right and if you like it others will also. Thankyou so much you nailed it!

I agree with both of you Paul. Watching your videos is like meditation. It's so peaceful and chill, for the length of it, I can forget about other things in life and just get lost in the beauty of your vlog, music and photos, all so elegantly produced. You really have your own special touch and that's why we're here. Keep it going mate!

Paul C Smith Photographer Music is a good example. I’ve always listened to music that you don’t hear on the radio. Some of those musicians over the years may have started producing for the masses, resulting in a deep-dive in the soul of their music. Therefore I, for one, stopped listening to music from those artists. You will always have an audience even if you change directions. What I don’t know so much about is the RU-vid perspective and if there is any pressure with getting new subscribers. Either way, you have got to have pleasure in making content, and you can be sure that there will be at least one more person in the world that likes it :).

Hi there! I watched the vlog again… once more … you are one of the reasons I bought a M8;-) I got me one last week, refurbished and modified by Leica from M8 to M8.2. I don’t know what it is, but this camera is already a “always in the bag”. So much joy to use. I bought her as a b/w camera in addition to my M240 and Nikon D3&Z7, as I like to use different cameras when using 35mm film , (with the Hasselblad you get different backs but still) … kind of weird maybe but it’s just me … always good light!👍🏼

'MAKES ME FEEL SPECIAL WHEN I AM TAKING PHOTOGRAPHS' So true, You know it just works and you know it will take those beautiful images provided you did your part, that is composition and focusing etc. which naturally you will do and be so hyped about doing, leica makes that come out from you, thats the Leica philosophy - to bring the photographer in you, makes you connect with your subject more by being the mediator and not a distraction.

The gear may help you feel good about taking images but you also need to have an eye for great composition and one that tells a storey and sucks the viewer in and you certainly have the talent Paul, great stuff. I have been a photographer for over 40 years and only now am I looking at a Leica for the simplistic controls and the engagement that it seems to provide. The challenge will be letting go of all the features a modern day camera brings for just the exposure triangle, but I am looking fwd to it. All the best from the UK.

Okay, this is over a year old, but my feedback, probably to any photographer, is just keep taking what you like, and vlogging what is appropriate to you. As soon as you start second guessing the audience your creativity stutters. You do have a great connection with your environment and that's what shines through most for me.

I totally agree with what you said about being in a special zone and magical place with certain cameras, and the effect that can have on your photography. So true. I feel exactly the same about my Plaubel Makina 670 which I was lucky enough to buy a couple of months ago. Every time I use it I swear there is magic in the air and I feel my photos have something special - at least to me :-) Thanks for being open and honest about your Leicas. Sure, better gear doesn't automatically make you a better photographer, but if it makes you feel like you can be, and if it helps fuel your enthusiasm for something you enjoy passionately, then who's to say your pictures aren't better as a result. Great post. Keep it up :-)

I've watched all of your previous episodes since discovering your channel. I like that your channel is personalized. Many so called photography channels are either about gear or lessons in basic photography which I don't need. Even your gear talk in this episode was personalized so it was worth watching rather than many other leica episodes i've seen in which the host drools over the leica without really expressing anything interesting. I appreciate the relaxed personalized content. I like the pictures. I like seeing what is in your immediate area there in NZ rather than the better known touristy areas. Watching your channel has not only encouraged me to move NZ up on my places to visit list it has also got me thinking about what kind of channel I can start. I also like that you tell us the names of places you go so I can look them up on a map. Keep up the great work and do *your* show. Don't let the peanut gallery influence your content too much.

I totally agree about embracing your equipment if it hits a note for you. I like shooting with my Leica (M10-d). I have shot with all kinds of equipment going back to my youth in the 70’s. It’s not about the equipment and I am not a gear head at least not in what I find interesting about photography. I am a gear head in terms of what gets me motivated to go out and shoot and helps me enjoy the process. There is something really cool about shooting with a Leica. It’s expensive and feels like a special piece of hardware. It’s legacy also gets me in the right frame of mind but I would never go down the rat hole of trying to sell anybody on the idea that it’s a better camera then camera x.

Another great video, great images. For me I love your channel just as it is, even though you use decent kit you’re not drowning in it and telling everyone that if they don’t have the latest Sony your images will be lousy. I like it the way it is, laid back, not over complicated and decent images to show for it.

Very interesting viewing Paul, I was hooked on your obvious passion of the art throughout this vlog. Your use of silhouettes, creating contrast is excellent. I’m not what I’d liked to see to be honest, just continue with different locations I suppose. Do you ever venture up to the mountains? It would be interesting to see what you manage to capture. 👍

Another high quality vid mate with some stunning photos. Re. gear agree totally with you, I shoot Dslr Canon and Nikon for work, but for my channel it's always the fuji x100 series, love the compactness and manual settings dials etc, old style with modern twist, however I hate that it's not weather sealed. Regarding content I say keep doing what your doing, I'm so temped to dust off an old cam and shoot some film, I'm a bit lazy tho' so its taking me a while, but your vids are pushing me in that direction, I think it's the mono film grain, I just love that grain. Top watch Paul.

Thank you so much for the time you spend taking us through your experimenting (if I may say so) on film vs digital and different cameras. Speaking of which, have you ever tested the Leica M7? The prices of a mint condition later version M6 (TTL that is with the shutter dial a bit larger and turning in the "right" direction) are rocketting (near the 1700€ over here in Europe) and therefore the M7 isn't that far away: would you go for an M7 if, let's say for arguments sake, it were near in price to a M6? Keep up the great work, love the music by the way. Have a good day.

Many will say gears don't matter, but sometimes we got to be comfortable and enjoy it too i guess, not just about the G.A.S or the camera being a status symbol. Great video too. How do you feel using a Leica shooting landscapes? Like framing it perfectly and such.

Wow!! Outstanding review on the M8 and you just cost me money :). A few quick questions - are those photos right out of the camera?? And when you do use the IR filter, do you need it for color and B&W or just color? Thanks!! Love your channel.

Hi Noa, exported to a jpeg at 300dpi , an image file from the M8 comes out at aprox 350 x 250 mm. you couldpush that a bit so if you want to try your luck you could get into an A3 size.

I've used my M8 since 2007 and really never used the IR filters (I'd have a hard time finding the two I got free from Leica). Seems to only be necessary in incandescent lighting.

Just loved your shots from your day at the beach, really nice composition, minimalist feel and the colors looked great to me. I recently purchased an M8. I couldn't afford Leica glass so I picked up a used Voigtlander 40mm f1.4. I am still getting used to using a rangefinder again...I had an old Mamiya 6 twenty plus years ago which I loved - it also seemed a tad easier to focus than this M8, I am sure I just need to put in more time...Anway, my question : I have heard about people using an IR filter when shooting color with the M8 but I really do not understand why that is - the colors do look a little punchy to me - definitely more saturated than what I get with my Canon Mark II or even my new Fuji XT2 - however, they do not look at all abnormal to the point that I would consider an IR filter to correct them? - Can anyone tell me specifically what an IR filter is supposed to do to the colors in an M8 image....? IR filters have a purplish sort of hue to them if I remember correctly - I used one a few times years back when shooting black and white film but never really got into the look, so I set it aside - Anyway, if anyone could enlighten me as to why the IR filter is suggested to be used when shooting color with the M8, I would love to know? thank you. Great post by the way, loved your images!

Hi Drew, the M8 has problems with Black tones, go take a picture of a piece of black fabric and take a look, you will notice that the blacks will look a little purple. Thanks for watching

funny, I just walked around the condo complex I live in here in Canada. I took my M8 and just fired off about thirty frames of different colors features, signs, doorways and angles etc. The complex is primarily black and white in color. Today is very sunny and clear as well. Anyway, I came in and downloaded the images the began opening them in Photoshop. I immediately noticed this purplish hue in the black trim and the large all black garage door that I shot. Previously, my images really contained no solid blacks though I did notice some purple fringing on a dark handrail fixed to the side of an architectural project I recently shot with the M8. Anyway, thanks so much for your advice and taking the time to anwer my question. One last thing - Is there a specific brand of filter that you would suggest I purchase. I know filters vary greatly in price and quality - do have any recommendations with regard to a preferred brand? if so, I would appreciate hearing your thoughts on the issue - Cheers man and keep up the good work, really a very interesting page, interesting topics and fine imagery!

Stunning images, I am toying with buying an M9, as I love my Leica X typ 113 - that produces some pretty decent stuff, but want to move over to the M range as tried the M10 and loved it. But naturally the price is insane. I am enjoying your channel, and Leica M8 discussion, and film images. Keep it up please Chris.

Hey Paul - great to see your subscribers growing. I think you have started small and slow, but because of your unique, personal, high quality content, you should do very well. You remind me of another youtuber Sean Tucker. Also, most people post from Europe or American. Your NZ based content is very unique and different - we have that lovely clean, organic squeaky clean image in NZ, and it is very sought after by the rest of the world. Though I have lived in Aus now for over 30yrs, I still always travel on my NZ passport and still get a lot of very positive comments. I'm too embarrassed to travel on my Aussie passport! Keep up the great work Paul - I want to see you do well. Philip

Hey Philip thanks for that really appreciate it. Thanks for the comparison with Sean, I don't watch a lot of his content but watched his latest video yesterday and he was talking about just being yourself and that's all I have tried to do. I think it's important to have a point of difference in your content and NZ is perfect for that! Thanks again!!
