Sometimes you can’t always be prepared for everything and you will never find the PERFECT anything. That being said you just have to take the dive and commit and then when things get tough you just keep pushing!
I walk you through my welding rig and talk a little about where I was at when I first started out in 2018!

I've been a diesel mechanic/farmer/rancher/welder/railroader/truck driver/equipment operator all my life and I've used and seen dozens of service trucks from 1/2--ton 2WD Chevys to twin-screw Kenworths with full service bodies and 10,000-lb. "cranes" and have never seen any "work truck" with "oversize" wheels and tires besides the ones "out west" in L.A. and Vegas and Phoenix in Diesel Power magazine owned by city-boy "contractors" with their "business name" on the doors so they could "write off" all the "uogrades" to a "work truck" for the "job site" without even a receiver hitch out back much less a gooseneck hitch and brake controller to pull a lifted "job trailer" and I also know its prettt much unheard of for anybody with a work truck to get stopped on the street and get "hired" regardless of the truck so overall I seriously doubt you've ever had the opportunity to make a "hiring decision" based on what the "guy" was or wasn't driving and even if you DID you're an even bigger idiot for judging some books by their covers and others - like this one - judging the cover by its book and all while playing "old timer" and a vastly experienced and expert "hirer" of "guys" with "work trucks" you often saw before hiring and always saw before not hiring them and ALL because apparently despite your vast experience and expertise "contracting" whatever guys and their trucks to do many, many "jobs" for you and being an excellent judge of who not to hire based upon how "upgraded" and "modified" their trucks were despite never hiring them or even interviewing them after you "learned" not to hire the guy you don"t know and didn't meet or give a chance to "earn your business" despite having been apparently irresistibly drawn toward big, shing, gaudy "work trucks" at least enough and long enough to eyeball the "upgrades" and judge to "judge" them, you apparently never were blessed with or some would say cursed by the "DIY" in your DNA despite being compelled to come up with "jobs" you needed to hire "guys" with trucks for but only the ones not driving trucks you seem to feel threatened or intimidated by before "transferring" that negativity to their "unhireable" owners. Kinda weird and you almost seem to have a "phobia" going on there with the 4-foot tire trucks at the same time you have kind of a "fetish" for "work trucks" that have both obviously been major sources of and inspirations for "teaching moments" which slowly but surely "educated" you on which trucks are probably driven by guys you want(ed) to "check out" but do not want to "hire". I gottta wonder if you've ever been looking to "hire" some "guy" with a work truck for some kind of "home improvement project" and maybe doing some "remodeling" that might involve you and maybe a closet you might feel like you're stuck in...I MEAN "WITH". Or is it stuck in a closet?

@@deeremeyer1749 Punctuation is important. If you haven't seen what he's talking about, maybe spend some time in the oilfield, and you will. I'm about a year into my metal fabrication side hustle (I work full time on the weekends as a machinist) and I'm overwhelmed. I. Slammed with work, I'm under priced (probably why I'm slammed), I'm spending too much time doing work I shouldn't be doing (like painting signs. I'm not a painter. It takes too long, I'm not set up for it, and I hate it), and I've got a LOT to learn about running a business. I am very happy to have found your channel. I think I stand to learn a good bit here. Thanks, bub.

I'm glad you found it as well, but I will say you certainly seem like you are further ahead than most if you realize the reasons why your slammed, underpriced and doing things you're not set up for. Most don't have the self awareness to realize when something is not going right. Keep it up brother, we are all learning everyday!

Great video brother. Preach it. As a welder business owner myself, I agree 100%. I'm a business owner that happens to weld. When i started, I started small, paid everything cash, stayed out of debt, and slept well at night. Over time, that cash rolls in, and you can upgrade trucks and tools as needed. I now have a few new engine drives, both gas and diesel for mobile and full shop that fits tractor trailers in. All the time, I didnt buy something unless it was a tool that would make me money. Having tools that dont make money are a depreciating asset. (Of course you can want all the cool new tools. Be honest, we all love our tools) Just stay focused on your business. Work hard, get dirty and tired, and sleep well at night. The cash will flow in. Keep up your aws certs. Be a professional.

Lots of common sense here in this vid. Enjoyed the shout out to your ‘old man’, great start up rig. Inverters are the way of the future, in my opinion, genny and different inverters and plasma. Light truck, low cost, pay someone to do the trailering. Be the happy and positive guy at all times, its just part of the job, like wearing a shield. Look up total burden cost of an employee, cause thats what you are, and price fairly and accordingly. Invoice promptly and accurately, its easier now then it used to be. And.... work. ATB.

I have kind of whittled down what I need in my truck and not. A sub-26,000 GVW straight truck with a "van body" on it and a roll-up back door and a fold down "ladder" and your welder, cables, bottles accessible from the ground and a vise on the "bumper" and gradually adding work benches and tool storage and if you're really handy a "jib crane" with a chain hoist you can swing out the back to pick up "shop work" outside and move it inside and all the "spare parts" and "steel inventory" you will have to have in a "shop" somewhere so you can go to the field and from "small job" to "small job" without having to go "look at" and then go buy "supplies" would be a way more practical and affordable and reliable and durable and way more profitable "welding rig". A "short bus" would also be an excellent choice too.

Great video man! You are so correct about welding vs running a welding business. I know a guy who is probably the best welder in the county. He runs a small shop out of his shop and I worked for him for a while. He had no clue how to run a business. He would knowingly do work at a loss or at cost. We would go weeks without pay he was deep in debt and had about 100 project going at once that he couldn't finish. I learned real quick what not to do with my own business.

just came up on your video,i think it's great for someone wanting to get started,i've been doing this for 60 yrs and have worn out a number of trucks along the way,i started building wrought iron in memphis back in the early 60's and was building iron for new houses when the building boom was hot,i had 7 contractors up untill 74 when the oil crunch came,at the time we were buying 50 lb boxes of rods for 12.50.today i have given as much as 150.00 a box,but it is what it is,i'm slowing down but wish i could do it all over again and know what i know now,it,s always a learning process,i can learn something every time i do something and the best and quickest way to learn is to watch someone that knows what he's doing, technology has come a long way since i started but you still have to use common sense on a lot of things and learn short cuts to get the job done.i could go on and on but wont, good luck and do your best on everything you do because you're work will be your reputation.my wifes name will come up as doing this but she didn't-paul parvin on facebook

Hell yea I'm trying to go that route. I just picked up a crappy arc welder cuz I wanted to learn the trade but it died on me after a couple days so I was bummed about that so now I gotta look for another. Hopefully when I find one in my price range then hopefully I can learn the trade and become a mobile welder. Great looking truck

I ran your plate # buddy and just a FYI, you had two outstanding warrants that came up out of the city of Springdale, AR. You may wanna get them nipped in the bud before getting out on the highway in the old white hog again partner. It looks like they are just simple traffic infractions that were never taken care of and not that serious but can still be a pain in the rear if the white hogs brakes goes out and you roll through a red light in Springdale and you get pulled over by Martin Riggs and spend the night in the clank.

Excellent video. I love looking at other people's work on Instagram now and then, but it's gotten to the point where people are getting discouraged. They see all the cool trucks and amazing welds and think they can never do it themselves. I like your down to earth attitude. We need more people like you promoting the trades.

I’m glad you’re getting into welding but I would be cautious on rigging out right away and being independent if you don’t have any field experience. There is a whole lot more to the welding industry than just knowing how to weld. It is beneficial to learn a trade from experienced tradesman for a few years before striking out on your own because you won’t have anyone to help you if you run into a problem. Just some advice

I don't understand the guys with those fancy trucks like you're referring to...I like the looks of them as much as the next guy...but a setup like yours gets the job done just as well...I do a lot of mobile welding as well as mobile mechanic work...started out with an old 1979 Miller AEAD-200LE mounted on a 1981 Chevy C30 with a plain old flatbed. Have since upgraded the truck to a 2004 F350 (with the 6.0, ignore the haters I love mine) but still running that old Miller. She's not nice and pretty like a new machine, but I can lay just as nice of a bead with her as I can with a brand new one.
