This form of metal is called Kawaii Metal (Cute Metal). It is Pop-Metal fusion. The girls all started out in a pre-teen/tween pop group. When they formed Baby Metal the lead was 14 and the other two 12. I hope you get to hear more from them. (Megitsune), (Ijime, Dame, Zettai), (Katate), (Distortion), (Pa Pa Ya), & (Da Da Dance) are my favorites.

So you really need some context!! LoL!! Imagine if you will.... The year is 2010 and a Japanese Idol group based around School Life with various Clubs....and one of them is the Heavy Music Club. Heavy Music and Jpop vocals...wasn't expected to go very far but a fan base started to emerge over time. Three years on and they were so popular that the powers that be decided to separate the group to become its own thing. December 21, 2013, The Legend 1997 Show (1997 is the year the lead singer, Suzuka, was born and its the day after her 16th Birthday)..the concert starts with over the top Idol/Jpop styles with the girls singing to a backing track...progressed to the "Fake" Band of Babybones(the ones in this video- they could not always afford a live band so they had actors in skeleton costumes pretend to play)...but the music gets heavier and Heavier as they bring in a real Live Band, the "Kami Band" as the show progresses...until the Finale where Suzuka gives up her existence as a Pop Princess to be reborn as a Metal Goddess!! So you caught the middle of that transformation...and its the song that went Viral because of the extremely high "W T F" factor!! And yes, they have songs that will leave your Metal Mind in a state of Utter Adulation as well as some that will just make you smile, cry, scratch your head because you have no idea what just happened. This video going viral is what probably introduced a lot of (non-japanese) people to Babymetal. They are a fusion of j-pop and metal which they call Kawaii metal (cute metal). Babymetal (the three girls Su-metal, Vocals/Dance and Moa-Metal and Yui-Metal, Scream/Dance, think cheerleaders) was formed in 2010. This video was shot the day after Su turned 16. Moa and Yui are 14 in this video. They have 50+ songs and are currently releasing songs from their 4th album, Thay have toured the world and have had sellout crowds of 55K people (Tokyo Dome). their music style varies. Some songs may be very poppy, some are a lot harder. there are power metal songs, beautiful ballads. One song sounds like an Irish Jig, one like it could be in a Bollywood movie. The group remained the same until 2018 when Yui officially left the group citing health issues and was replace buy a permormer known as an "Avenger" the Avenger just dances and has no mic. The "band" in this video was just pretending to play the instruments, though they are often backed by a band known as the "Kami Band" wgich is a group of some of the best performers in Japan. Depending ob your tastes, I'd recomend Road of Resistance (Live in Japan, Rondo of Nighmare with the mischiefs of mayhem intro (Kami band intro) or Metal Kindom (official) a song that was first performed live this year at their Jan 28th show.
Tip: Babymetal has a seriously hardcore fanbase and reacting to them will drive views to your channel (those Japanese fandoms are very dedicated). From a 'Western' perspective, Road of Resistance live in Japan (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-zTEYUFgLveY.html) is the one which converted me (old school metalhead) from, 'yeah, this is kinda interesting' to, 'okay, that was fantastic, also I HAVE to go to one of their live shows because their crowd interaction / control is second to none I've seen (I'd say on par or possibly even better than Rammstein)' - so I now have tickets for their next tour. With Headbanger Live @ Legend 1997 Apocalypse (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-YjjWZpf_jSs.html) being another good option in terms of getting your head around what their thing is. In terms of non-live stuff, I'd say Karate is their best music video (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-GvD3CHA48pA.html) They are absolutely a divisive group amongst western metalheads, people either love them or hate them. However, not that band opinions should necessarily sway people, but a few gems I've come across: "They roll harder than you" - Rob Zombie "How can you not be entertained watching that?" - Korn "We saw them in 2013 at a festival, and we were astounded by their awesomeness" - Metallica They've performed with, toured with, or opened for Metallica, Korn, Dragonforce, Rob Halford, Sabaton, Bring Me The Horizon, Guns N' Roses and Red Hot Chili Peppers (when they were touring with the Chili Peppers, Chad Kroeger made a point of bringing a birthday cake out on stage for the lead singer's birthday). So... regardless of what some metal fans think, they've won hearts and minds amongst the metal community.

I remember when I discover Babymetal: I saw Gimme Choco, Karate videos and inmediately ordered their first 2 albums. The day the CDs arrived, I was comming back from work hearing the first CD in my car with every song blowing my mind, close to home I heard ''Onedari Daisakusen" and my jaw fell and I drove with my open mouth for 3 minutes. I was hearing the song even in my dreams. I had the CDs on repeat for almost daily for two years. I travelled to another country to see them live, one of the best experiences of my life.

You probably picked the song with the biggest WTF factor but congratulations, you can now move onto their more amazing songs. As a newby to BM, I suggest dipping your toe into it a little more with one of the following songs. Choose Headbangerrrr! (Legend 1997 version), 1997 refers to the birth year of the lead singer and this was g=from her 16th birthday show; Megitsune, a crowd favourite; or Karate. Once you have seen any of those, I strongly suggest watching Road of Resistance - Live in Japan, which truly encapsulates the talents of the girls and the backing band, as well as show how amazing their crowd control is. You will not believe it when you see it. I love Babymetal, they kept me sane during the Melbourne lockdowns in 2020 and gave me a smile everyday. They are the epitome of Happy Metal. Kitsune up!

I was gobsmacked like you because I heard this song firstly too , - I'm 55 and have seen everyone live in 40 years of going to concerts and Babymetal are undeniably superb - I've seen them twice here in London and will see them next month at Wembley supporting Sabaton. They are in their mid twenties now. The band is called the Kami Band and are some of the most talented musicians on the planet. It's not just a concert, it's an experience (a little like Nightwish gigs) and a lot of metal snobs criticise them because they are blinkered and not open to a new type of metal genre/fusions - they are close minded. My Wife also was a little concerned, 😆 I must admit - but there is no and never has been anything sexual about their performances. I love Lovebites who are of course superb musicians but if you stick with Babymetal, you'll here songs paying homage to Indian music , Latino music, Rap music, even Sea Shanty style - all with a chunky backing which I know you like so much. I do hope you give them another shot as I don't think this is the right song to hear first - the shock value puts reactors off unfortunately and they never cover Babymetal again. I disagree! Gimme Chocolate is what defined and differentiated BABYMETAL. Karate is another. They had so many great songs in just the first two albums, but as kawaii metal goes, Gimme Chocolate is a signature track.

Dance choreography and metal had never been seen before and they somehow managed to make it works creating their unique own genre called kawaii-metal, mixing Jpop and heavy metal along with many more sub genres and rhythms, you'll have so much fun going through this journey. At the time this concert video was posted (2017), lead singer was 16 and the two younger girls were 14. However, they'd all been performing in Japan Idol schools since they were around 7 or 8, so they were highly seasoned by the time they made Gimme Chocolate.

"Is this how all their songs are?" No. The songwriting is very varied. They do almost everything as long as it is metal. And they mix other genres with metal. They use rough vocals sparingly. BABYMETAL is arguably the best live band from 2012 until today. That excludes the first two years of their existence. They started 2010. During their very first live performance the girls were 11, 11 and 12 years old.
Japanese music for people who are not used to or just listening to it, is like being on the island of Madagascar because you will see animals and plants that are only on that island and not on other islands

Right! I am turning 75 next week, and I was running around twirling a towel in the pit in Japan Jan.29 for their first wild live since the Pandemic hit. These guys will make people so happy, it is insane. Nice reaction. Welcome to the foxhole. This song is about wanting chocolate. Considering how many people love chocolate I'm surprised there aren't more songs about it. This has to be the most fun song about it. Babymetals music is Jpop vocals over a metal base and whatever genre of music they feel like putting in the middle of it. Song starts off with Yui and Moa making what is guns sounds in Japan. so, they aren't just asking for chocolate they are demanding it. In a kid friendly kind of way. They want it. They ask for it. And then they hold off eating it because they're afraid of gaining weight. But like any other kid they eat it. Then they become so happy they trumpet about it. You can hear this reflected in the music and the dance routine. Babymetals overall style of music is called Kawaii Metal. They are the originators of it. And nobody does it better. Another hallmark of their songs is lyrically a strong positive message. Give Me Chocolate is just one of their fun songs. Babymetal songs all sound different and yet keep a core Babymetal sound to them. Su the lead singer comes up in top singer list a lot and often. They were just starting out here. And this was from the Legend 1997 concert. all for Su's 16th birthday. Babymetal have done some amazingly epic shows in Japan for their birthdays. Many fans will tell you Babymetal live is the best Babymetal. And they're not wrong. But their actual music videos produce many of their dance routines for their shows. Speaking of dancing. They do full choreography for all their songs for the whole show. If you could harness that energy, you could power a city. Their live shows have won the awards to prove it too. They've been performing for over 10 years. I usually suggest starting with their first album songs so you can grow with the band. Literally since they were so young when they started. Gimme Chocolate has never been my favourite Babymetal song, they have so many incredible songs it's easy for it to get lost in the crowd. But it's growing on me, really like the choreography and that mix of fuck-yeah heaviness and sweet-as vocals with more filthy guitar/drums. And the look on every reactors face is classic 😎
I've been listening to metal since the 70s, bands like Judas Priest and Black Sabbath, got into GWAR in the 80s and I have to say that this band absolutely slaps. The girls energy is amazing and Kami Band pumps out some of the heaviest metal ever 😀
Those bands right there are pretty bad Babymetal knockoffs where dodgy looking girls play rock and not METAL, trying to ride the Babymetal bandwagon. BABYMETAL came first, they started in 2010 when they were kids, they are cute girls and they have a cute and innocent face, these other bands are inferior to Babymetal and this difference is in factors such as production, merchandising, talent, career management, concert sales, LP, cd and dvd sales, also talent and musical technique first because these other bands don't have not even half the talent of KAMI BAND and the girls have stage presence, talent and a lot of experience since this year they celebrate 13 years of career as Babymetal and another one is respected by Korn, Rob Halford, Rob Zombie and many other world Metal icons, other bands don't even come close to that. NEVER COMPARE PURE GOLD WITH TRASH!

They have all kind of genres! So you can find songs that go even harder, you can find Ballads, Electronic Metal, Pirate, Power, Thrash, Prog, Djent, etc...
That was an amazing reaction. It was priceless. You said you had that expression for like a minute. It was more like the entire song from the moment the girls started singing. So I'm going to warn you about something. Babymetal typically takes about 3 songs before people decide if they like Babymetal. You're already a fan I think. You just don't realize it quite yet. You're at the what the hell was that???? phase. Next song you listen to will be the, "This is just nuts. So weird" phase. Last comes the, "Ok, its a little weird, but it isn't bad. I think I like it". Once you pass this phase, it's considered too late. You've fallen into what we all call the foxhole. So you asked if all their songs sound like this. Simple answer is no. But kind of yes. All their songs always sound so very different from each other. But You'll always know a Babymetal song. There is just this.... magic in a Babymetal song that you can tell. Babymetal loves experimenting by mixing metal with different Genres. They do Metal/EDM, Metal/Rap, Metal/Indian Music, Metal/hiphop, etc. They truly are unique. As for their ages. Yes they were VERY young in this video. I believe Su-Metal (the main vocalist with the microphone) was 16 in this song. The 2 dancers/backup vocalists were 14 I think. The one with the dimples in her cheeks when she smiles is named Moametal, and the one with the adorable chubby, baby cheeks is names Yuimetal. The entire band was formed around Su-metal as the creator heard her sing and thought she had a voice and commanding presence that was too powerful for just JPop (which was what Su-metal originally was trying to become. A JPop idol, much like KPop idols). So he formed the group as he was a metalhead and wanted to revive the metal scene in Japan. Whenever you see in Babymetal "musicians" that are dressed in skeleton outfits, know that they are not musicians. They are just acting. At that time, Babymetal couldn't afford their own musicians yet so the music is a backing track pretty much. Later on, they have live musicians that play the music for them, although technically the musicians are not considered part of Babymetal. Anyhow, I can say more if you want in your next Babymetal reaction. This song IS considered to be the most shock-value song in Babymetal's catalogue. Also, one thing I forgot to mention. You may not understand what Su is singing about, but don't worry too much about the lyrics during the reactions. Su has stated many times that the words are not as important as the feelings that are being conveyed. She would MUCH rather you FEEL the music and what it is trying to tell you through how she sings and how the music is performed.

Back in my immature teen head banging days I would of said this BabyMetal is just another PopMusic market infiltrating the Metal scene ....As an Adult many decades removed from those years , I say, the band is legit and deserves mass appreciation and credit, the young girls are terrific and entertaining ... this whole concept is awesome and I don't care if it is some marketing ploy or what , more power to them and none of my concern ...I just appreciate music of all kinds levels and all periods now
This was a "show" band (not real), they do have a fantastic backing band (Kami Band) that changes out but keeps a main group. On their own the Kami Band is a killer metal band, the girls started in the idol academies and were put together by their producer. A unique concept and sound that has been going on for a while now. They have several great concert live videos - Road of Resistance for one.

That's exactly how Babymetal started this new wave of Japanese rock/metal for the west. The music is great and the girls are actually talented, well, their are young women now. They've been doing this for over 10 years ! First reactions are always fun, after that we can go any other direction. Because Babymetal has a very diverse discography It takes about 3 videos/reactions to fully wrap your brain around what they are and what they do and if you like them.
Some context, this concert was in 2013, for Su's 16th birthday, lasted an hour and a half, almost non stopping, even the backing band, call Kami Band, only played a half of the concert. That's how these girls are so professional at that young age, and giving credits to any one involved behind them.

Their genre is "kawaii metal" which translates to "cute metal." Sooooo, there you go :D They do have a variety of tempo with their songs as well as some girl-power ballads in there. And Su-metal has REALLY matured into an adult singing voice (I believe she's 23 now.) I believe this particular tour was in 2014, and Su would have been 18, while Yui and Moa would have been 16 or turning sixteen (I saw them in France that year, Su let Moa take over her solo). BabyMetal began in 2010 there were three, Suzuka age 12 Moa Kikuchi (shown in the video) and Yui Mizuno (who left in 2018 due to health reasons). Both Moa and Yui were only 11 when the group began. All three were friends and classmates who attended an idol school (Sakura Gakuin) founded in 2010 by Amuse Talent Agency for girls 10 to 15. Themed around school life the girls would learn and train to be idols and graduate at age 15 to move onto whatever entertainment path they chose. Kei Kobayashi was a music producer for Amuse and heard Suzuka sing at age 9 and was impressed with her strong vocals and stage presence. Kobayashi was a fan of heavy metal but believed that the genre had become tired (especially in Japan) with metal bands getting old and needed to be reborn (BabyMetal means the birth of a new metal genre). Kobayashi believed that Suzuka had the ability to front a metal band and that her vocals and presence could withstand the metal guitars and drums. The fusion of Jpop and Metal began. He placed Moa and Yui as backup singers and dancers and a phenomenon was about to occur. At first Amuse showed no interest and the girls had only financing from Kobayashi. They performed at strip malls and small venues using clothes borrowed from friends and family. No money for a real band they had friends dressed in homemade skeleton costumes pretending to play instruments to a backtrack. They became a sensation (these young ladies paid their dues) and Amuse saw the potential and in 2012 hired the best session musicians Japan had to offer (The Kami Band) who tours with them today (now includes world class musicians from the USA for tours outside of Asia). Check out DIH BREAKOUT and BAND-MAID. BAND-MAID are not metal they are rock but they are one of the best bands in the world right now. Try their songs DICE and BLOOMING or just about anything really.
Tip: Babymetal has a seriously hardcore fanbase and reacting to them will drive views to your channel (those Japanese fandoms are very dedicated). However, not that band opinions should necessarily sway people, but a few gems I've come across: "They roll harder than you" - Rob Zombie "How can you not be entertained watching that?" - Korn "We saw them in 2013 at a festival, and we were astounded by their awesomeness" - Metallica They've performed with, toured with, or opened for Metallica, Korn, Dragonforce, Rob Halford, Sabaton, Bring Me The Horizon, Guns N' Roses and Red Hot Chili Peppers (when they were touring with the Chili Peppers, Chad Kroeger made a point of bringing a birthday cake out on stage for the lead singer's birthday). So... regardless of what some metal fans think, they've won hearts and minds amongst the metal community.
