How much a dollar cost is honestly my favorite track off this album. Just the build up, the backing jazz band, and story telling is unparalleled. Simply perfect.
‘These Walls’ is a quadruple entendre: 1 - vaginal walls 2 - walls of the projects/hood 3 - prison walls 4 - walls of the inmate’s mind (as he thinks about his girl with a famous rapper)
Walls of the girls mind too as he brings up interrogation as he’s trying to find out why she’s sad and what she thinks about her man in jail while they have sex
@@eco5312 then it’s a quintuple entendre. So many people get caught up with the incredible beat & hook that they don’t realize how technically incredible (from a lyricism point of view) that song is. Nearly impossible to get on a first listen so not critiquing this video at all; just a general statement
In Alright when your wife comments on the reused lyrics of "40 acres, a mule, a piano a guitar", that entire verse opening is almost word for word from the second verse of Wesley's theory... Only major lyric changed is in Wesley's theory it's "my name is uncle Sam, im your dawg, motherfucker you can live at the mall" where in Alright it's "my name is Lucy I'm your dog, motherfucker you cab live at the mall". This part of the album is when Kendrick starts getting more aware of the pressures of neoliberal America and the music industry, so this reveal is him relating neoliberal America to being unholy, and speaking for Lucifer etc.
One of the best albums ever. Kendrick’s magnum opus. I remember I was dating a girl and she didn’t care to listen to the lyrics. Needless to say we ain’t together anymore ! Standouts on this album are Hood Politics, Blacker the Berry, complexion, king kunta, these walls and alright. You two are great you don’t need to understand every lyric 🔥
it’s actually pretty sweet every time i watch these videos cause i find so pure the fact that you as a couple are able to share things that each other like and be open minded even when’s not the usual type of music you would enjoy, it really shows how close you are
You two have quickly become my favorite reaction channel. I can't wait to hear what she thinks of this album, the production is so good. Thank you both for the entertaining content.
17:38 - These Walls is almost a prequel for some of the self issues he addresses on Mr. Morale and the Big Steppers: his addiction of infidelity which almost cost him his own relationship
32:37 - y'all missed the focus of "Momma" but it's because he didn't vocally say it in the song. It was mostly about him going to Africa for the first time, specifically Cape Town, South Africa. It's called Momma because of it's nickname for the Motherland of all civilization, especially black people. Some of the rest of the album songs stay in that subject like Complexion, The Blacker the Berry & Mortal Man.
Great reaction here. Kendrick’s self-reflection is always masterful. And it’s always more interesting than the more mainstream content. All over this album are moments where Kendrick takes a lot of time to explain why he is the way he is, only to turn the story back around on himself. Momma: “I’m famous. I have everything. I know everything. I’m untouchable. Oh wait, when I came home, I realized nothing I just bragged about has any importance.” How much a dollar cost: “I got where I am alone, I don’t owe you anything. You can’t guilt me into helping you. Oh wait, this is the high power speaking to me, and I deserve to lose my spot in heaven because of how I just acted.” Blacker the Berry: “The entire system is pulling us down. It’s all their fault. We wouldn’t do this to eachother like they are. Oh wait, I was literally in the exact same position.”
Mortal man is one of my top 1 favorite song of all time, it’s so good. This is a great reaction too, hope to see a reaction to Kendrick Lamar’s DAMN. album💜
I love that her reaction is just like all of our (hiphop heads) reactions. I'd love to see a follow up video of what she thinks after a few more listens. She already mentioned she's been going back to GKMC and its clear she loves this album as well. Awesome video!
Not sure if you guys have a running list of projects to hit, but some Mick Jenkins would be sick. Every album is an almost no-skip for me. Love from Maryland you guys rock
My first interaction with Kendrick's music was during a road trip with my family. My mom and siblings were in the car with my dad driving a moving truck, and I switched to riding in the truck with my old man halfway through. The first song I heard was these walls, which unfortunately turned me away from Kendrick because hearing that intro as a middle schooler is a lot to digest! Almost 5-6 years later I'd listen to this album in whole for the first time and it all came back to me. So lucky to learn about Kendrick through my dad first. Thank you both for uploading this reaction, seeing Molly hearing this masterpiece for the first time and fully appreciate the production is cathartic. I'd recommend giving the SNL version of "i" a listen if you haven't! I prefer it over the album version, but both are wonderful
I would love to see you guys react to something from Lil Wayne, Tha Carter 3 for example. I think it's one of the best hip-hop albums of all time and a must-listen to a newcomer in hip hop.
from a pure objective angle, this is probably the greatest album in music history...and as a music lecturer and former producer, I can tell its the only rap album we've heard with a flawless musical composition
Just really enjoy your commentary, and the breaking down of how these songs affect you with context to your own musical taste. If not a reaction please listen to the album Bismillah by Peter cat Recording Co. I think it’s something special 🙇🏻♂️
I think for the people who enjoyed your reaction to this would have a fair crossover with people that would enjoy seeing you do a review for Lupe Fiasco - Tetsuo & Youth
@BankaiFever Not only can he compare but lyrically speaking he towers above Kendrick. Kendrick is better conceptually and formulating an album, which Lupe admits to himself.
I just listened to that album the other night. I forgot how good Biggie was. His flow was immaculate and his story telling was next level. Not to mention Method kills his verses.
Its funny that you had made a previous comment that Kendrick fans would be able to mesh with artists, you should check out his performance of "These walls" on Ellen; you will get how right you are once you watch it
