I tried a long time to get my wife to use an android. She finally give up her iphone and done it. She complained and hated the experience. The folding phone made no difference. She will not use anything but apple, period. Same for everyone in my family except my mother and I got her on a pixel. I truthful cannot stand the apple ecosystem, just not for me. And I like foldables to much to use anything else. One thing I learn from the experience, I will not pressure the wife to use anything other than an iphone ever again, lest I bear the brunt end of bitter wrath thrown upon me. 😂

I don't think I could ever go back to a slab phone. First fold was the ZF4, then the screen broke, and Samsung sent me the ZF5 for a replacement. Then in July I got the ZF6 cuz slightly bigger screen and also SQUARED CORNERS! I kinda disliked the rounded edges. I'm pretty happy with this fold. I absolutely hate the design of the Pixel Fold 2. Too many rounded corners, and the FRONT cover looks like an iPhone inside a case lol.

I still have my ZF3 - my first and likely last foldable phone. The obvious benefit of a foldable is outweighed by less durability, less specs, and the highest prices. If the calculus changes down the road, I'll reconsider.

@peacelove8395 День назад
Less specs? Other than the camera what exactly are you referring to?
@markb8330
@markb8330 День назад
@@peacelove8395 The camera is a big deal if it’s your daily driver but of course, that’s not the only less spec difference. If you compare the ZF6 to the S24U, you get less resolution (either screen), less battery capacity, lower charging speed, and less dust & water resistance rating. And the S24U has a titanium frame.

Good video. My wife watched it because your wife was in it. She hates listening to guys droning on and on about tech stuff. Anyway, she has a z-fold 5 and while she's not into phones or tech, she is a multitasking machine and probably the best marketing foldable phones could have. She initially played with the demo while we were waiting for a pickup at The Big box store. The Samsung rep answered a few questions and it was just a matter of which color after that. Luckily after a year we have had zero problems. The only thing she likes better than telling strangers about her powerhouse folding phone is using her powerhouse folding phone. She typically gets 6 to 8 hours of screen time per day, all work stuff, and a couple more of surfing/reading before bed. We are both amazed at how little she uses her laptop anymore. I appreciate your down to earth approach to reviews, thanks guys.

@avalons343 This wasn't a durability test, this was about seeing how a non-techie felt about integrating a folding phone into their normal day-to-day. Trust me when I tell you the small differences between the 4 and 6 were not going to significantly change how this conversation went.
@CastroJordan
@CastroJordan День назад
I've got to play devils advocate. I've had most of the z folds and never used one as my actual phone, until now with the 6. The 6 makes a huge difference for me from just the 5. The added width, symmetry, and squared off corners. It feels much more refined and enjoyable to use. The cover display is good for me now, actually usable, the 5 wasn't. Everyone is different, but if I never used a fold and was given one to try. I'd have 2 completely different experiences just by using the 5 vs the 6. Using the 4 is cool as long as the person knows it's a couple years old and the current one has better x,y,z. ... and in my experience, they are no where near as fragile as they are given credit for. I haven't broken one yet. With my z fold 5, I tried to break it. It wasn't my primary phone and it had insurance, so I ran an experiment or personal case study. I got very rough and careless with it. The frame and hinge was scratched and dented but that's it.

I agree the durability needs to reach that of normal phones or as close as possible. That being said, the utility has been worth it enough to me that I just go the insurance route. If I'm already spending that much, another hundred bucks or a few hundred (if you want several years of protection) to outright get your money back is worth it. I just keep mine for a gen or two, have the standard warranty protection and maybe an extra year with insurance, then I trade it in towards a new one to get a steep discount and the cycle repeats. It's great that 4-7 years is the new standard for updates, but realistically...most people aren't keeping their phones for that long, so I don't think it's as big of a problem as people think it is. Phones are consumables. Not saying that's right, but realistically, you're dumping your phone for something new after a couple of years or a few max for most people.

I tried a foldable phone the original pixel fold. I thought it was pretty amazing looking but in day-to-day use I couldn't do it. I'm out and about all day long. I'm hardly ever home so I'm driving all the time walking here walking there and I found myself just using the cover screen instead of opening it up, there was no need to. If you work from home I can understand you opening it more. Same goes for the Samsung with the stylus, if you're doing normal everyday things you don't even think about the stylus you're using your phone like a normal phone, there's no need to pull it out. And your wife's right, the pixel phone is the phone to use. The Samsung phone. The software is all over the place. Double apps, it has no rhyme or reason. The pixel 9 is amazing and the software is amazing, it's not on your face.

Interesting video. It's obvious she was swayed by your experience. But, she still prefers the option of bigger for when she does want it. I think the vast majority of fold users fall here. They want big when they want it. Her comments about Samsung software was also telling. She ended up implying it was too complicated. She implied that she couldn't handle it. I don't like Samsung software. It's too much. It's like 100 different things, 98 of which I won't use. It just needs to go away. It would be interesting to see how she reacts with the pixel fold and Gemini in action. Or an OtterBox on it and let her go with it!!! The results of this video should also serve to affirm your method of reviewing. 47% of people don't multitask often. Most people don't care about the bezels. Most people don't care about many of the little things. I think that is the audience. People who drive multitasking with these folks devices are an even smaller niche group .a subset of a subset. So when I see videos of people using the device...I love it.

I like the concept of a folding device yet the price and the durability issues are the reason I stick with my now 3 generation old iPhone. I have an eye condition which causes progressive vision loss and the idea of a folding tablet in my pocket seems pretty cool. Yet I’ve seen multiple complaints about consumers getting the run around by Samsung, pixel. Oneplus when their phone fails at no fault of their own. Seems to me these companies are just using them as a cash grab and then deliberately giving customers the run around when trying to repair them. The alternative to that with Apple is you can literally walk into an Apple Store and whatever the issue is will be rectified the same visit.

Brilliant concept! Your wive is still a bit above avarage with her knowledge. Recognize different UI and knowing the names of models. That is a logical consequencd of living with you I presume. 😊 But I also see a lack of experience with this UI. Not copying the outside screen on the inside screen is the one thing that makes Samsung unique and I see your wife not using that feature. Is she aware of this brilliant function? I had scratches on my Fold 5. But it's just the screen protector. Samsung replaced it and now it looks like new the last two months. Is it really a Crack or a scratch on the inside screen protector? Personally I really hate the Pixel UI. I don't understand the lack of customisebility. Just that Google search bar on the bottom that you can't delete or move is annoying to the max for me😂

Great Video to you and your wife Shane - loved it - just my opinion on the foldable phone - I waited before getting a foldable phone I didn't want Samsung and I didn't want a Chinese ROM phone. The oneplus open came out last Oct 2023 and I jumped on it immediately - mainly cause it was oppo built and I've had Oppo phones and Oneplus phones in the past. I do not regret the purchase is #1 - the other is for years i would buy a phone and tablet and sell the tablet cause I never used it but wanted the option of a tablet when doing larger task things ie. Terminal programming - (I'm a Linux admin) the Oneplus open main screen size and tablet size is the perfect blend of 2 worlds and I love it - this is the longest i've kept a phone (normally get bored of phone after 3 months) i'm now approaching the 1 year mark next month and will only get another foldable if i need to upgrade at some point - and of course i will wait for the next oneplus variant when it comes out 2025. Hope this info helps anyone in their decision for foldable - it's a great spectrum to be in if you are hesitating about this type of device.

At first I thought the foldable was fragile and definitely used it like it was. I'm now on the ZFold6 and I use it just like any other device. I don't think I'll ever go back to a regular device. I carry insurance and use a screen protector where I never did with my previous Ultra devices. I've found that having a case with Magsafe and using a solid holder really helps with that feeling of using it unfolded and risk dropping it. The flexibility of the multitasking allows me to perform office functions away from my laptop during my workday. That is the number one reason I bought this phone. Nothing else gives me that freedom so I'll stay with the foldables for the foreseeable future.

Building use cases for a folding phone takes time, as necessity promotes needs that one wouldn't even entertain on a smaller screen. That being said, for people other than reviewers like Shane who make money from them to justify their ownership, having to shell out so much money for a frail device may not be as appealing as more rugged ones like an S24U, a tablet, and/or computer. For those with plenty of surplus money to spend or who can turn them into revenue, or those with at least one reliable device they can revert to if the fold goes bad, it's not such a big deal, but the "average user" has more important things to do with their hard-earned money.

No issues with my Pixel Fold's screen. However, i noticed the hinge no longer has the stiffness that it once had. So, tent mode is hard to use, if i don't have it set on a more resistant surface. If the sirface is smooth, the phone will slowly open up more. I have noticed some software quirks that would cause some apps to freeze from time to time. I don't know if it's an app software optimization issue or phone software issue.

Good video but what i wish you would have asked your wife is now that she has experienced using a foldable as her daily phone, could she see herself paying upwards of a $1000 more than a base Pixel 9 or $800 more than a base Pixel 9 Pro? Thats the dilemma book style folding phones still face. Your wife also had a luxury many don't in that she was able to trial a folding phone long enough to gauge how she feels about using one daily. Sure, you can buy any phone from Best Buy or carrier store to test anywhere from 2 weeks to a month but many charge a restocking fee if you choose to return it and even if they didnt, many won't go through the hassle of using another phone for a number of weeks to test especially if like in this case you're going from a Pixel UI phone to a One UI phone that is mostly foreign to you. There are just a lot of variables that are subjective based on the user but a few things are very clear. The cost is still the biggest barrier to folding phones, book style, keeping them from really being mainstream. Many can deal with other conpromises but the immoveable object here is the price.

@@scaryifliteral Lol so in many ways then this experiment was moot since regardless of how well it went, your wife will likely never justify paying the big premium foldables cost. I can perform the same experiment with my wife and it will likely go the same way. I'm sure she will find value in what a foldable offers but she would never agree to pay what it costs. It's like lending someone a $150,000 Mercedes S-Class for a few weeks and their daily driver is a Toyota Camry, of course they will love many of the luxury amenities the Mercedes has that their Toyota doesn't but the Mercedes costs well over $100,000 than their Camry so again, kind of a pointless experiment when you know what the result is gonna be.
@scaryifliteral
@scaryifliteral 17 часов назад
But we didn't know what the result would be. I thought there was a strong chance she'd like some things about it, but want to go back to a normal phone. I believe she said the same in the video. Her liking it as much as she has was a surprise to both of us. A Camry and an S-Class are both still just cars. A Z Fold and a slab phone are very different things.

@@scaryifliteral Both a slab phone and a folding phone can be used the same exact way if the majority of the time you end up using the folding phone closed, using the cover screen. The amenities difference between a S Class and a Camry is vast enough that the analogy still stands. Yes, both are ultimately forms and transportation with the base premise being getting you from A to B but they do so in a very different way. As I said before, the experiment is interesting but ultimately null and void due to your wife and many others not being able to get their head around buying a phone that's almost twice what a perfectly good slab phone costs. This experiment will hold more value if price parity between slab phones and foldables becomes much closer to reality, until that happens, foldables will very much remain a niche class of device.

Using this stat, I think people are still skeptical of using folding phones
