I will never get over the fact that Harlan was essentially a victim of his own overdramatic nature. He got to the age where he wasn't afraid to die but was titillated by the idea of dying in a cool way while helping a friend. When being a theater kid comes back to bite you in the behind. Lol
@SLosieczka
@SLosieczka Год назад
Christopher Plummer was outstanding in the film because I think Harlan knew! He commented how this would be a great way to murder someone and went to write it down. When he realized the life saving medication was gone I believe Harlan knew someone had switched them, knew it was Ransom, as Ransom was the only one that knew Marta was receiving Harlan's inheritance. The acting here is so great! Also, as Harlan mentioned earlier in their conversation, he wanted to set his family straight before he died and this was his way. And, he didn't fear death. Harlan knew Marta would beat Ransom. That's why Marta always winning at GO was so significant. Thoughts? I think I just like this theory better. For Harlan and for Marta.!

Fun Fact: Ana de Armas' performance was so captivating and charismatic that Daniel Craig offered her a role in No Time To Die. The scene where Bond tells her "you were excellent" was actually the final shot they filmed on that movie. I love how this movie brought these two actors together in both universes 🤗

In regards to the right/left dynamics of the family, I think the point was that despite their idealogical differences, they close ranks to protect their status and wealth as soon as it’s threatened. Even Meg, ostensively the most liberal of the family, is ready to turn on Marta when her tuition is threatened, despite Marta’s promise that she would take care of her
@jpgrennan
@jpgrennan Год назад
I think it’s a class critique. There is no true left vs right dynamic, they argue on social issues but are united as a class. It does criticize conservative social values but also critiques those who hold liberal social values but only on a surface level. At the end of the day they are all rich assholes who are on the same side.

@@CERULEANSPIRAL No, Meg is as awful as the others. Her claims of being liberal go out the window the moment she feels her status (including money) is threatened. Also, if you notice, when Blanc first meets Marta, he does a double take and stares at her shoes. Proving his statement that he noticed them from the beginning. Also why he didn't press on the holes in Marta's story like the Go board falling. And Jamie Lee Curtis probably never would've received a letter from Harlan saying her husband was cheating if her husband never threw the baseball which the dog picks up which then Jamie's character returns and sees the letter. Also, when the doctor called Marta and Marta said "that's good news" once she vomited, I was like "wait...then the doctor must be pretty confused hearing that" instead of "Oh shit! Marta just lied and Ransom confessed to her murder!" Also, Chris Evans did REALLY good as a douche. What really stood out when he was mouthing "wow" without really saying it. His expression was GREAT!

This movie is great for a many number of reasons, but probably the thing I love most about it is that it switches genres twice and it does so in such a fantastic way. At the beginning it's a whodunnit, but then when Benoit Blanc is interviewing Marta and has the coin flip, the movie switches to a crime drama by convincing us that Marta is in fact the killer and now we're watching how she's going to get away with it. But, then when Marta is preparing to give her confession to the Thromby family, and Benoit Blanc has his rant and ultimately recommends the death of Harlan be ruled as a suicide, we're back to a whodunnit because there's apparently more information we're not in on that proves Marta's innocence and condemns someone else.
@Skope111
@Skope111 Год назад
Well said. Also I think it has one of the most important qualities of all genres: humor. You can get away with so many things when you convince the audience that it was done for comedy. Getting spotted by grandma and her asking about Ransom is played off so well that you don't even think about that line being incredibly important.
@seimen4348
@seimen4348 Год назад
@@Skope111 I think fast editing is much more important. You can get away with much more things if you just throw enough stuff against the audience that theydont have time to even think for a second. Love Knives Out. The best mysteries are the ones you can solve yourself before the big reveal. This gives you all the clues to figure it out before the will reading. You can know the bottles were switched because of the really heavy foreshadowing in the death scene, but also because Marta mentions a morphine overdose causing extreme drowsiness. Harlan was completely aware and lucid the whole time, showing no signs of an overdose. You can figure out Ransom switched them mainly because of the dogs barking. The movie tells us the dogs were barking in the night, and the only character in the movie they bark at is Ransom, so you know he came back at night. Plus great grandma mentioning Ransom being back "again."

Such a great movie, and Jen picked up on a ton of details immediately! One of my favorite small details that subtly shows the personality/character of the family is that they keep saying Marta is from different South American countries when they bring it up. They don't even know the real answer, and to them it's all the same anyway. She was described as being from Paraguay, Uruguay. and Brazil all at different points in the movie.
@josefstalin9678
@josefstalin9678 Год назад
My theory is that her family is from either Uruguay or Paraguay and that one of them just misremembered because they kind of sound similar and also that ransom just said brazil because he was throwing out of random country. I mean the odds of two of the guesses being those two similar sounding countries seems like a pretty big coincidence to me and they never actually say where she's from so I'm guessing they both knew it was one of those two and just made a 50/50 guess

Normally when you see a cast with this many big names it's a bit of a let down because it's hard for everyone to get enough "me time" without feeling like they're too involved or underutilized. This is a fantastic cast with some really great actors........and they all get the perfect amount of screen time. This is such an entertaining movie and I've seen it several times. Normally a mystery/whodunit gets spoiled after a watch or 2, but this one is just so well done and fun that I don't mind coming back to it.
@davidranderson1
@davidranderson1 Год назад
Benoit Blanc keeps give the viewers hints about Marta's shoe by repeatedly using "foot" references, including "the game is a foot." I always wonder if it's just for the audience (playing fair and pointing to a clue), him having fun with Marta, or him testing her guilt or innocence in some way. If she's guilty would she unconsciously look at her feet to see if there was something on her.

remembered what Harlan said about Ransom, “He plays life like it’s a game without consequences until you can no longer tell the difference between a stage prop and a real knife.” Brilliant foreshadowing! when Marta threw up on Ransom that was actually baby food mixed with water. Knowing that makes it easier to watch. The movie was an homage to Agatha Christie novels. Have you read Agatha Christie? Her works broke the rules of the mystery genre; she became known as The Queen of Crime. Her novels go from 1920-1970s. Actress who played Marta gave a phenomenal performance! Glad they cut away to her reaction to the suicide; the look of horror on her face was outstanding! Like Blanc said, Harlan’s demise was the result of “a tragedy of errors.” When he pointed out how Marta could visually spot the differences between the morphine and the correct medication, he said it so quickly. Needed subtitles for that. You’ll enjoy Glass Onion as well.

Upon my most recent (of many) rewatches of this movie, I noticed something that I hadn't noticed before when it comes to the scene after Ransom has been arrested and Marta is needing to make her appointment with the "blackmailer." If you notice, Blanc is talking about how there's one piece of evidence that will reveal the whole case and how he needs to find that one piece. You're more focused on Marta needing to make this deadline that you don't realize that he's basically speaking to her subconscious, amping up the drama and tension that she needs to find this evidence before him. And what does Marta do? She literally drives him right to where that evidence is. He clearly was playing mind games with her at that moment, and I freaking love it!

Re: Comment of the Day - there's a screenwriting handbook called, "Saves The Cat", that basically is able to categorize any movie into one of 10 different genres, such as Monster in the House, Dude with a Problem, The Fool Triumphant, etc. Fascinating to read and there are follow-up books in the series that break down popular movies into these type of genres or categories.

Hands down, one of 2019's best. So well crafted with the ensemble cast and good storytelling. Christopher Plummer as Harlan the author. This was his final film role. He passed away in 2020. "No Time To Die" was the next film that Daniel Craig (Blanc) & Ana de Armas (Marta) work on afterwards. The sequel; 'Glass Onion' is worth the watch.. It had a one-week release in theaters before streaming a month later. A last-minute announcement and I wish that I saw it earlier.

Lived in a apartment first floor building when I was like...6 in 1996 and we had a mouse situation and tried to kill it with mouse traps lol. One day all the electricity in the flat went off and me and my parents we could smell something bad coming from behind the fridge and there was smoke. Dad pulled it away and a mouse had basically run/tried to get through the wires/circuits or whatever behind the fridge and basically fired itself the poor little bastard. Thats...thats one way to go lol.

When Benoit is interrupting Marta's confession to the family, the kind of dumbstruck looks on the family members' faces was because it was the first time that they were hearing the "Foghorn Leghorn accent" It is one of my favorite fun facts about this incredible movie.

I love americans trying to pronounce anything that isn't american xD Can't wait for the bit where they try to pronounce hyundai in the next couple of episodes. 35:55 Does it pretty well the first two times, then just throws out all of that and continues the only way they know how hahaha, i love this so much, i hope this joke never dies

I always thought Benoit kept Marta around to keep an eye on her. He knew she was somehow involved, but he also knew that she couldn't (truly) lie. She knew the family secrets about Harlan cutting off family members and why he was doing it, so she was a trusted confidant of Harlan.

As a long time Star Wars fan I was nervous about Johnson directing episode 8, because I wasn’t a fan of Looper. But . . . I f%&$ing loved the Last Jedi! But the way the Star Wars fandom reacted, especially how Kelly Marie Tran was treated . . . it was the first time I’ve ever been ashamed of being a Star Wars fan. As much as I loved the Last Jedi, I wasn’t in a hurry to watch Knives Out. I finally watched it on streaming and absolutely loved it! I fell in love with Ana de Armas. And Daniel Craig’s been my guy crush since Casino Royale and he was great. And I love Glass Onion and can’t wait for the next Benoit Blanc movie.
