Don Diego de la Vega was traditionally played by a white man in most if not all versions. Traditionally speaking Don Diego was always zorro, until this movie specifically which introduced Murrieta who then took the mantle after his training... it’s a testament to Antonio’s performance we see him as the definitive zorro, and have to even use the word blanco zorro in the first place.

Joaquin Murrieta, the Mexican Robin Hood/The Hero of California/the Robin Hood of El Dorado, was the inspiration of Zorro. Because of racial discrimination, his brother was murdered by hanging, and his wife was beaten and raped. He claimed he would “live on for revenge, and that his path should be marked in blood.” He hunted down the men who were responsible and killed them. Over the years, many immigrant miners were forced off of their gold claims, simply for not being white. Joaquin and his fellow vigilantes would rob the claims and mines the immigrants were forced off of and give the gold back to them. He was killed near my hometown, and his head was supposedly put in a jar and shipped all up and down the state to let all of California know that he had perished, but it was never proven to actually be HIS head. And, of course, Zorro was the inspiration for Batman (:

Honestly, Zorro is the role Antonio Banderas was born to play. I know others could do it (Diego Luna would be *fantastic* as one example; if they went with an older Zorro, Tony Dalton would be amazing, and so on), but this role is to him what Superman was to Christopher Reeve. Just a perfect match of actor to character.

Hey Holden. Props for your intro and staying in costume during the reaction. That's some real love right there. I've seen a few things of Zorro while growing up myself and was a fan too. Zorro is indeed the original caped crusader as an fictional icon of Spanish, Mexican, American culture. Live-action, animated, tv, film, comics, video games, toys, you name it. Almost 80 years after his impact, no one expected a brand new film about the dashing and courageous Fox. This was one of 2 new entries, directed by Martin Campbell (Goldeneye). Perfect casting with Hopkins as the original, Banderas (first spanish Zorro ever) as the successor and C. Zeta Jones as gorgeous, brave Elena. The action is good and old fashioned just like the original Zorro stories. But with more of flare with today's filmmaking. Marc Anthony & Tina Arena with the love theme, "I Want to Spend My Lifetime Loving You" is considered underrated. This movie made it cool to see old-time heroes make a comeback and grab the imagination of newer generations. The Legend of Zorro (2005) is very good too and sadly, it's the last one until they actually adapt him into a iteration as good as before.

This movie is a perfect example of how you have a 10/10 in its own genre/category. The film is not a "social commentary" nor "twisting expectations" film (from which we also have amazing 10/10 films that are epic on their own), it is just a perfectly done cheeky and awesome story, being told in its absolute best possible way; every part of it is correctly made for the genre it was intended to be, which makes it a 10/10, without the need to have "deep-reflective" or "sad depressing-type" moments (which are a vital part in other great films), because it's just not that type of movie. I would dare to say that trying to add something it didn't have, would probably end up decreasing the film's quality instead of improving it, that's how perfectly built and intertwined are the 5 storylines described in this film (Diego's Final Mission, Alejandro's Revenge, Helena's Personal Self-Discovery, The Enemies Plan to obtain California, The Training and Zorro's Mantle-Passing).

I really love this film, really well-made by Martin Campbell (who holds especially big currency for me as a Bond fan, being the director of both Goldeneye and Casino Royale). Impeccable and unmatched chemistry between Banderas and Zeta-Jones, such delightfully fun and energetic action scenes, including the most sexually-charged sword fight ever put to film, and a fantastically epic Latin-flavoured score from James Horner, probably one of his best works alongside his music for Titanic. Zorro, noble fop by day and masked adventurer by night, was first published in 1919. The Scarlet Pimpernel, noble fop by day and covert adventurer as the occasion required, was first published in 1905. John Carter of Mars, an immortal, mildly telepathic human who finds himself on Mars where he is comparatively super-strong, was first published in 1912. Whether Zorro counts as an early superhero depends on what traits define a superhero. He isn't the first hero with a double identity who hides his bravery under a meek facade. Certainly, he doesn't have superhuman powers. But neither John Carter nor Scarlet Pimpernel wore a mask to conceal their identities. So it's kind of a gray area as to who the "first" superhero might be.

I didn’t think anyone else loved this film as much as me, until I see my boy Holden mouthing “Don Raphael” and then mimicking that massive gulp the prison guard does after 😂

You should watch Robert Rodriguez's Mexico Trilogy, El Mariachi (1993), Desperado (1995), and Once Upon a Time in Mexico (2003). In the first movie, a Mexican actor, Carlos Gallardo, played the character that was played by Antonio Banderas in the second and third movies.

I was just thinking you should follow this up with Zorro - The Gay Blade. Then you mentioned it. Also, I'm going to disagree about Zorro being the first superhero. I think that honour should go to the Scarlet Pimpernel. Zorro was influenced a lot by the Pimpernel Finally, this movie has the 3rd best sword fight in a movie - second best is the fight between the Dread Pirate Roberts (Wesl;ey) & Inigo Montoya in The Princess Bride. The best is the fight between Hubert Hawkins and Sir Ravenhurst in The Court Jester

Joaquin Murrieta who was a real historical figure, is widely believed to be the inspiration for the original literary character Zorro.

I'm a huge fan of Zorro and this movie is a masterpiece in my opinion!!!! Holden, another masterpiece is the movie Hook! If Jen hasn't seen it, I highly recommend it!!! Robin Williams is fantastic as an adult Peter Pan!

When it comes to this style of sword-fighting, i can comprehend on a practical level why you'd hold onto your sheath, or keep one arm out and away from your body. 1) it keeps the arm out of targeting range and 2) it can be used for balance. But that being said, I always found this more traditional style strange looking. It appears as though the combatants aren't really that comfortable. They look stiff and rigid. But still, practicality will keep you alive more than "looking cool" I suppose.

I remember seeing this movie in the theater. What’s cool to me is that this film is a sequel to The Mark of Zorro (1940). Anthony Hopkins plays the Zorro from the older film and we catch him at the end of his career.

27:29 .....This very scene has been re-edited, changing the swords into lightsabers....... It's refreshing to see a lightsaber fight wit this style of fencing.......

I like this background. The usual white one contrast too much with darker movies making the experience painful to watch.

Guys joke about how Ryan Reynolds makes them doubt if they are straight, that happens to me but with Antonio Banderas. Smoothest mf out there.

Honestly 1998 was a big year for me theater wise. Theaters were just starting to transition into mega plexes or being closed down completely and newer digital sound was just getting introduced. This movie was right in that newer digital sound group. As was Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter and The Matrix. A great 2 years for movies for me. '98 % '99.
