Funny you should say that, when I was in college our sociology class actually used Silence of the Lambs as an example of how media influences the psych of the world around it. It was an interesting dichotomy because he was voted as one of the most terrifying villains when the movie came out yet he was only on screen for so long. I don’t remember fully what the entire lesson was, but we got to watch Silence of the Lambs in class so you know, win/win.

The Hannibal franchise is a lot of fun if you can handle the dark and dreary vibes! They are based on a book series where Silence of the lambs actually is the second one, and they filmed both the previous and later books, so it gets a bit messy. The first book Red dragon was adapted in 1986 as Manhunter, you should definetely watch that as its so underrated. It has a different cast though, but after the success of Silence and Hannibal it was adapted again in 2003 as Red Dragon, with Anthony Hopkins this time.

FUNFACT: This was going to be Gene Hackman's directorial debut, but he had a change of heart due to the violence. It would've starred Robert Duvall as Hannibal and Michelle Pfeiffer as Clarice. This is also considered one of (if not The) most faithful adaptations of a novel to film.
@alexanderthegreat5649
@alexanderthegreat5649 Год назад
Not entirely accurate. It went through development hell Hackman was going to be the producer and star as Crawford he had the rights but it went through many changes and Sir Anthony and Foster were basically both last choices. Even with Foster having won an Oscar I think 3yrs prior I believe it was Demme not sold on her(they being the studio and director would never agree on the leads) But everything as I say works out as it's supposed to Hackmans film was obviously very different because they still had him cast as Crawford after the changes and he also like Michelle Pfeiffer turned it down do to the graphic nature. So did Meg Ryan and Laura Dern, and finally Foster got it because she was the only one excited enough. The role of Hannibal was offered to Sean Connery he turned it down like he's done a lot of great roles over the years Lol, Daniel Day-Lewis, Pacino, Dustin Hoffman, De Niro, even Forrest Whittaker auditioned. Sir Anthony was offered and originally turned it down as he thought it was a children's book 🤣🤣🤣 hilarious given how all the other turned it down for basically not being a kiddie film "its too violent!" Then he read the 1st 10 pages called his agent back and said "it's the greatest thing I ever read!" I can't imagine this film any other way and every time I see how perfect everyone was from the producers allowing the graphic nature, director Demmes great job of filming, the actors legendary performances that never get tiring. We're lucky of all the previous failed attempts at it because it lead to this perfect product.

He was in Season 7 of The X-Files, in the episodes "Sein und Zeit" and "Closure," where Mulder finally finds out what happened to his sister Samantha. Anthony Heald played Harold Piller, whose son was also missing but had a psychic link to Mulder's sister's ghost.

Congratulations on the baby. There is a crucial part of the story that many viewers miss. This was a chess game between Jack Crawford & Hannibal Lecter. Both were using Clarice for their own ends. Crawford wanted the glory of catching Buffalo Bill. Hannibal wanted 2 things. (1) To leverage for his own escape. (2) To make certain Clarice got the glory & not Jack Crawford. Hannibal tells Clarice at the beginning he intends to help her catch Bill. Hannibal gave enough misleading information to make Jack Crawford go to the wrong address. Hannibal knew Crawford was using Clarice for his grunt work. He knew Crawford would accidentally send her to the right address. The moment when Crawford is at the wrong house and exclaims "Clarice!" is the moment when Crawford realized he was played by Hannibal the whole time. As Hannibal arranged, Clarice got the credit and Jack got none.
@HuntingViolets
@HuntingViolets Год назад
She could easily have gotten killed, though, and no credit then.
@dunringill1747
@dunringill1747 Год назад
@@HuntingViolets Clarice in death would have looked like a hero for trying to save the Senator's daughter. Also of note - Hannibal knows Jack Crawford, he dislikes him and wanted to discredit him. If Clarice were killed, Jack Crawford would have looked REALLY BAD for sending Clarice there alone while he was on his "crusade for glory". Crawford had already gotten the Senator mother angry (for making that fake deal to Hannibal in her name). Imagine how much worse Crawford's career reputation would have been. Bottom line is either outcome is nothing but a win for the Hannibal over Jack Crawford.

The Hannibal franchise is a series of 4 novels (Red Dragon, Silence of the Lambs, Hannibal and Hannibal Rising) that were later adapted into 5 movies (Man Hunter, Silence of the Lambs, Hannibal, Red Dragon and Hannibal Rising) and 2 TV series (Hannibal with 3 seasons; 39 episodes and Clarice with 1 season; 13 episodes). Chronologically the story goes Hannibal Rising (it was the fourth book penned, but it was written as a prequel), then Red Dragon (it was the first book penned), then Silence of the Lambs (the second book penned) and finally Hannibal (the third book penned). The movie adaptions more or less follow the same chronology as the novels, but it should be noted that Red Dragon was adapted into a movie twice. The first adaption was Man Hunter, which came out before Silence of the Lambs. At the conclusion of filming Hannibal (but before the Hannibal Rising novel was even penned) the film studio decided to go back and remake the first book under its proper title Red Dragon with Anthony Hopkins as Hannibal (using de-aging) as they were not pleased with the original film adaptation. Hannibal the TV series is a very loose adaptation/re-imagining of Red Dragon and Hannibal (with some minor backstory from Hannibal Rising), but without any mention of Silence of the Lambs (due to rights issues with that novel and the Clarice character). As such the character of Will Graham (the protagonist of Red Dragon) is re-contextualized to fill the Clarice role within the narrative of the Hannibal TV series. Clarice the TV series is a very loose sequel to Silence of the Lambs set immediately after the events of that novel/movie, but before the events of the Hannibal novel/movie. Due to the rights issues (mentioned previously) the Hannibal character himself couldn't directly appear in or be referenced by name on this TV series, but the role he played within the Silence of Lambs is briefly touched upon in an indirect manner.

It isn't just Clarice and Hannibal. Right from her first conversation with Crawford, Jonathon Demme has his actors looking right into the camera as if the viewer is taking the place of a participant in the conversation. Jodie Foster is also looking directly into the camera, whether she's speaking to Hannibal, Crawford, her friend at the academy, or the insect scientists. It even takes the point-of-view of the TV she's watching in one scene! In "Philadelphia" and several of his films after "Silence", Demme continued using this technique (though I'm not sure why). It wasn't until he made "Rachel Getting Married" that he discarded the gimmick.

Referring to Clarice's development during the film as a "metamorphosis" seems quite fitting considering the underlying theme of change in the film, be it the life cycle of a moth or Bill's need to "transform". Thanks for reacting to one of my favourite films of all time, it was interesting hearing your thoughts. Both Jodie Foster and Anthony Hopkins became two of my favourite actors after I saw this film and neither one of them has ever disappointed me since (although some films that Foster in particular has starred in have been so-so).

Just a little trick I've seen from creators on a channel called "Gaming after Bed" , they are a couple with young children, so they produce content at night or late evening when their children are napping or asleep. Whenever they hear that their children wake up, they just let the audience know they're going to take a quick pause, then jump cut to them returning to the game once they have taken care of their children. If you guys ever needed to do something like this for a video once you have your child, I fully support it, even if it's pausing and coming back to it the next day. Regardless of the content, life happens and it's important to take care of yourselves first. Congrats, again!

I love how there's constant close-ups during Clarices interactions with men. In the beginning its like prepping the anxiety between her and Lector but later it feels like it transcends it. She is constantly uncomfortable. The higher-up men have a certain power over her, hiarchacal or sexual. Its obvious with the head psychiatrist and less so with her boss, but still. She is fighting against a world of men in power against her AND trying to be a good officer.

A modern classic. And I'm like Holden in that I enjoy watching this movie with people who have never seen it. You know what's coming, but they sure don't. So deserving of every award it got, and there were many. Don't know if this was mentioned, but Michelle Pfeiffer was originally offered the role of Clarice, but she turned it down because she felt it was "too dark". To which Jodie Foster said, "Thank you very much!"

Jodie Foster said that during the filming of this movie, other than the scenes they had together, she never any type of casual conversation with Anthony Hopkins, because she found him absolutely terrifying. Also, if you notice, Hannibal never blinks when he's talking to Clarice. Hopkins borrowed that from watching a film/documentary about Charles Manson in preparation for this movie.

Winner of 5 Oscars including Best Picture. Before Sir Anthony Hopkins was cast as Hannibal Lecter, Brian Dennehy, Gene Hackman, Robert DeNiro, Robert Duvall, Dustin Hoffman, Al Pacino, Forrest Whitaker, John Lithgow, Jack Nicholson, Mandy Patinkin, and Brian Cox were considered. Cox played Lecter in the prequel MAN HUNTER in 1986. Meryl Streep, Laura Dern, Michelle Pfeiffer and Meg Ryan were considered for Clarice Starling. The scene where Lecter escapes by biting the guard in the face and beats the other with a nightstick was on Bravo's 100 Scariest Movie Moments.

Congratulations on the baby. I have been watching a few classic horror movies for the first time lately and I have to say that Silence of the Lambs is not really my thing. I like mystery/detective movies, but I think they could’ve executed the antagonist a little better. I recently watched The Ring for the first time, and it’s currently my favorite horror film because it’s scary, but it also executes the mystery aspects really well. You want to know why the tape exists and who the girl is, and the climax of the story doesn’t disappoint

Now you've got me hoping that you'll be diving into the series, Hannibal, at some point. Mads Mikkelsen is absolutely amazing in his take on Hannibal Lecter, delivering a performance as good, if not even better than Anthony Hopkins, who won an Oscar for this film. Also, Hugh Dancy is fantastic in his go, as Will Graham, previously played by Ed Norton in Red Dragon. While Manhunter and the remake with Ed Norton, Red Dragon, are the only other good films in the franchise, I would recommend watching the rest of the movies, before diving into the series. The series covers much of the same material as the other movies, but often in a very different and typically far superior way, making everything but Silence of the Lambs and Red Dragon nearly unwatchable in comparison. So at least, if you watch all the movies first, it's not like a trip to the dentist, trying to sit through them, which is exactly what it's like after watching the series.

Hannibal the Cannibal made his debut in the Michael Mann movie "Manhunter" (1986) based on the book Red Dragon. The actor portraying him at that time was Brian Cox and he was very much underused in the book and movie. The book was remade as the movie Red Dragon later so they could use Anthony Hopkins as Hannibal Lector again. All told, he played the role three times, in Red Dragon, Silence of the Lambs and finally Hannibal. Jodie Foster, OTOH, played Clarice Starling only once. Later, Thomas Harris, the writer of the books, was adamant that he didn't want to revisit the character again, but the studios kept offering more and more money to get him to write another book with the character that he finally wrote a book that would be so offensive that no one would bother him again. The result was Hannibal, and the ending was so offensive that the studio rewrote the ending. In the book, Clarice leaves with Hannibal as his consort/lover. In the film, she doesn't. Foster refused to return to play Starling in that movie and Julianne Moore played Clarice as an adult agent assigned to find and capture Hannibal.

Definitely one of my all time favorite movies. Fun sidenote is that due to the Hannibal tv show, there is actually a debate who they like as Hannibal most, Anthony Hopkins, or Mads Mikkelsen from the show. Though it mostly boils down to what they watched first. They both had a different take on the character, but both were fantastic. If you guys haven't seen the show, it could be worth a watch. The deaths are... at least in most cases more artistic in my opinion. And let's not forget the cannibal jokes they have throughout the show. For the movies, the Hannibal as a continuation for this is also pretty good, and so is the 2nd version of Red Dragon from 2002.

Starling carried the lamb as a child to escape her attacker. This failed because the lamb became too heavy. So here we also have a learning effect for Starling. Instead of freeing the hostage and trying to escape with her, she changes the old pattern of behavior and attacks the attacker. This is how she overcomes her trauma.

@@elbruces Of course, I call it that, because that's how it is from the child's point of view. A person wants to kill a living being that she wants to protect. I speak from a child's point of view and not because I see it as an attack as an adult.
