Never understood why this movie didn't do better at the box office. Easily one of my favorite superhero movies of all time, and the best literal translation from page to screen of any movie ever. It literally feels like a comic come to life onscreen. One additional touch I loved is how Zack Snyder went out of his way to give each of the characters a unique fighting style of their own, from Owlman's sweeping attacks and Silk Specter's straight ahead lunges to Rorschach's almost berserker like wild melee, he made each style fit their character.

It's lack of name recognition, good promotion, long run-time, adult themes and many other things, I'm sure. people in mass go to action films, about 90 minutes, and are more likely to go see a sequel or a well-known franchise, usually go with families/friends and will avoid movies rated R to be inclusive of younger people in the group or to avoid "uncomfortable" topics.
@vlonewolfv
@vlonewolfv Год назад
Well it was before the superhero movie boom. So a large part of the satire didn’t work for a general audience. So it’s just a bunch of bad superheroes. I get why that wouldn’t appeal to people. Throw in the fans that don’t think this is a good representation of the comic and you have a formula for a movie not faking off.

The biggest thing that I think is lacking from the film adaptation is the limited presence of Rorschach’s psychiatrist. The emotional and intellectual journey he takes during the graphic novel grounds the story in a realistic feeling of helplessness of the everyday person during large scale global conflicts like the Cold War (with or without superheroes). He may be the only truly sane character in the whole story. Without his presence, something thematically is definitely lost.

“Care about the story” Where? The movie only cared about the visuals of the book but not the meaning of the themes, characters, and story. @@americasteam2112 Why you want the movie to be just like the book. Frankly it's nonsense, the fact of wanting it to be exactly like in the book. A lot of people haven't read the books and just want a decent movie whose story they understand. Regarding the fact that they apparently have superhuman strength, they are superheroes and it's a fantasy world. Manhattan alone is a mind-blowing character. The characters in the Watchman movie and Book are based on the 70s Charlton comics characters, which were acquired by DC comics in the early 80s. Writer Allen Moore wanted to tell the story with the Charlton characters, but DC management told him no, so he made copycat Characters based on them. Rorschach is based on The Question, The Comedian is based on Peacemaker (who was played by John Cena in the Suicide Squad and had his own HBO show.) Nite Owl 1 is based on Blue Beatle 1 Dan Garrett, who was just a guy in a costume punching people. Nite Owl 2 is based on the 2nd Blue Beatle Ted Kord, along with all his gadgets and his ship. Both the 1st two Blue Beatles are referenced in the trailer for the newest Blue Beatle, Jaime Reyes's movie. In the shot where you see them saying the older gadgets at Kord industries are like Batman, you can see The Blue Beatle 1 and 2 costumes in the background. And last, Dr. Manhattan is based on Captain Atom.

While I'm sure the "looks silly" issue was part of the decision to remove the squid, one important point is that the squid requires a lot of screentime to explain; with the mystery of the kidnapped artists and scientists, and it also requires the existence of actual psychics in the human population, rather than Manhattan himself being the only "magic" element in the world.

The scene where Rohrschach kills the man who murdered the little girl was changed because the movie "SAW" came out before the movie Watchmen and was a success. I really enjoyed the Watchmen series, which was made as a follow-up to the original comic, not the movie. It's premised on the inter-dimensional squid attack, and shows how Ozymandius perpetuated the charade. Watchmen was originally published in the 80s, amid the zeitgeist of the Cold War. In a similar way, the TV series focuses on the current zeitgeist, touching on racism, disinformation, domestic terrorism and police brutality. On how easy it was for them to guess the password--that was the whole point. Everything in the movie happens according to Ozymandius' plan, on his schedule. He wants them to find the video, so he deliberately made the password easy to guess.

You guys should definitely watch the HBO miniseries! I actually like it better. In regards to the movie... I get not making it a squid, specifically, for the sake of not wanting to take general audiences out of the flick. I can see making Doc Manhattan the source of the attack for the sake of brevity. But the whole point of making John go away is so that when this "common enemy" shows up, the US, and the rest of the planet, doesn't think Doc Manhattan is going to save them. 'Cause Doc Manhattan's gone, baby. He ain't savin' anybody. That's sort of the problem with being a "slave to the page" in regards to adaptation, then changing something at the eleventh hour. That change sticks out like a sore thumb, and the contradiction can take you completely out of the movie or show. It's a house of cards, in a way. 'Thor Love and Thunder' had a similar problem in adapting the rules of Jane Foster's transformation into Thor and back being the thing that killed her, but not the circumstances in which she becomes Thor in the first place. In the comic she becomes Thor because no one else can, and the world needs Thor. She's worthy. In Love and Thunder, Thor tells Mjolnir to protect Jane and when she's dying, the hammer makes her Thor, but the hammer's also killing her, because that's what it did in the comics. So those two things contradict each other, and, coupled with all the other problems that movie had, collapsed the whole experience for me. In the comic Jane's a hero, sacrificing everything for others. In the movie, Thor's hammer is killing Thor's girlfriend for reasons. In the Watchmen comic, peace is absolute, and built on a lie, but its future is uncertain. In the movie, peace is necessary, but flimsy and definitively temporary. It doesn't seem like it'll take long for people to realize that Doc Manhattan didn't orchestrate the attack at all, y'know?

They changed the Rorschach scene because it was a direct copy of a Mad Max scene... right down to some of the lines. They changed the ending squid monster... because.. come on... the original ending was just ridiculous. Even as a kid it was one of my only problems with the comic.

This comic is just incredible. The small story embedded in the comic, you can find it animated on youtube by the name of Tales of the black freighter. I think it features Gerard Butler. Anyway great reaction as always. Edit: Speaking of DC, I don't now what the intension was with this one but, a new comic came out (somewhat recent) featuring a crossover between DC and Watchmen characters, it's called Doomsday Clock.
@AleksPizana
@AleksPizana Год назад
That part it's on the 3.35hrs movie version which includes all the deleted scenes, along with the Black Freighter comic animated comic book. Doomsday Clock is a continuation to this story, written by Geoff Johns (Infinite Crisis, Blackest Night, Flashpoint, New 52, Rebirth... etc) . It was meant to incorporate the Watchmen to the DC main universe.

5:10 ......"It really is a master class in adaptation".... Perhaps, but this kind of adaptation can lead to an empty stylism, to the point that the movie can butcher the themes of the comic. The comic was all about to present this characters as amoral losers, while the movie present them as a bit amoral but cool people (Specially when Night Owl comes down from Archie, Batman style, the hell is that?).....To be fair, I won't say is bad adaptation (clearly, there's a huge respect for the source material on the visuals part), but it is style over substance, and I think that a more competent director would've noticed and corrected that...... That been said, Moore's work ain't easy to adapt, and despite how empty it could seems, this movie still is the best adaptation of Moore's work (although, considering how other movies based on Moore's comics ended up, this isn't exactly a compliment).......

I don't really think the Comedian was blaming Manhattan for him shooting the pregnant woman. Dr. Manhattan was visibly upset at his actions, and Comedian was just basically questioning why he was upset. He didn't like the sequence of events he just witnessed? if he is all powerful, like the comedian said, he could have turned the bottle into glass, disintegrated the gun or turn the bullets in something else. and yet he didn't. if Dr. Manhattan really was upset, he would have prevented them from happening in the first place.
@swalsh216
@swalsh216 Год назад
Your point at the end about how eventually the world will "forget" about Dr. Manhattan's "attack" is something the HBO series actually addresses! (Obviously about the squid/alien rather than Manhattan)
@flatebo1
@flatebo1 Год назад
However, the world wouldn't need to get tired of waiting for another squid alien attack. Governments would have one heck of an incentive to learn as much as possible about the monster. And it wouldn't take them long to figure out that it was bio-engineered on Earth. There would realistically be no way for Veidt to create a completely original life from with a completely alien biochemistry, complete with a multi-billion year faked evolutionary history. Veidt needed the alien to live long enough to send out its psychic attack. So he needed an actual living being. Which means he'd have to go with what we know works, and that's Terrestrial biochemistry. Which in turn means that anyone analyzing the remains of the squid monster would rapidly realize that it's not actually an alien. And at that point Veidt's plan falls apart with the world's governments blaming an American and probably by extension the American government, for everything, even without Rorschach having kneecapped Veidt's grand plan by giving his journal to a newspaper. With the movie's version of the ending, I'd think people might get a bit suspicious about who actually did the deed once Veidt starts introducing so many wonderful new technologies based on replicating Dr. Manhattan's powers. It's not like Veidt was ever very shy about letting the world know he has a messiah complex.

I basically consider the HBO Watchmen series to be in it's own separate universe where the 2009 Watchmen movie was a direct adaptation of the graphic novel (including the giant alien squid), and the series in a modern continuation of that reality's timeline.

Couldn't agree more, one of the most amazing, faithful adaptations with lines and scenes right out of the graphic novel (my favorite is Night Owl sitting in his cave hunched over after Rorschach leaves). Even the way they changed the ending stayed faithful to the message of the original. Great reaction choice!!

crazy that Zack Snyder always said the movie could never be done, then he found out what the studio was doing it and if you read into the changes the studio was going to do like having Rorschach be a good person hero type that wins in the end.. it's no wonder he stepped in.

Rorschach is also like Batman if Bruce Wayne was poor. Rorschach and Batman are great detectives and fighters (though Batman is a better fighter from using his wealth to spend 10 years studying every martial art while Rorschach picked up boxing while in a group home as a kid). Batman has billions to spend in weapons, armor, and vehicles. Rorschach lives in a shitty apartment, he probably scrapes by on cash he takes off of criminals he kills, and wears a trench coat and mask.
