Most of my wildlife footage is filmed with the Sony A7S III and 200-600mm f5.6-6.3. After testing many wildlife setups from Fuji, Panasonic, Olympus, Canon... I stuck with the Sony for the ease of manual focus, sharpness, zoom range etc. But the slow motion video is often so clinical looking, and the colors are gross. It leaves me uninspired and constantly thinking of switching systems to recapture the magic from cheaper lighter systems.

ok son. you see where the tri pod part is on the lense? That's the nodal point. that's where the image flips. you hold it at where the tripod mount is. they put the tripod mount there for a reason. so you can make a perfect 360 * pan if you mount it there.

let me just put some things off my chest: - people love gear chasing content watching and making because it gives you a hope. it is not only with photo and video gear, it is a new phone, tv, laptop, house, bike... you believe that one thing would make you better and happier. and that will never change - 3d pop has nothing to do with full frame sensor or micro contrast, just some have that because of their glass - most movies are made with super 35 cinema cameras so if anything those should be more cinematic - I dont know how xh2s had so much noise here when other youtubers compare it to c70 and fx3 and saying it has same or more dynamic range, noise is good and other stuff. it could be editing errors - you can not spend a lot of time editing every video you make especially if it is not paid work but hobby so you need gear that makes it look good SOC, and that was mostly m43 and fuji - and lastly i believe everybody should make content that is natural for their life and environment. if you lived in some wild area it is natural to know and see all kind of animals and know them and love them. if you live in the middle of war zone, that is stuff you need to show the world. urban life... all successful artist, writers, photographers... have this in common, they express life they know and live. I know nobody reads this much lately (neither do I) but just had to say it.

You've watched comparisons from the XH2s against C70 and FX3? Show me the ones in 240 fps where the Fuji looks better. Because that's what we're talking about in this video. XH2s has the worst 240 fps of any Fuji camera. Even XS20 destroys it.

Having shot a feature length Owl Documentary on an a7siii and 200-600, I can agree that sony does have a digital look. But the pro's outweigh the cons 100-1. From what you're saying, taking the 200-600 out handheld, that's admirable but also not ideal. Wildlife shooting often times requires the higher end aspects of all filmmaking equipment - heavy duty video heads, slow motion high sensitivity cameras, long record times etc.. none of which lend their hand to amateur gear. I enjoyed the RX10iii for its lens reach but that's about it. The other cameras you showcased sure do have beautiful colouring - both from the cameras sensor and the lens options. But at the end of the day, if you're shooting wildlife on a higher end spectrum and the budget doesn't allow for a RED setup, the Sony a7siii/fx3/fx6 system is the way to go. A good colour grade can handle the rest. Big props to you anyhow mate, I love your channel and content!

I held onto my A7R2 for years because of the great sensor. All the while I never liked using the camera - was never inspired, etc. I always felt like I was using a computer that happened to take pictures/video, instead of a CAMERA. So just cut the cord and get rid of Sony and their non-firmware "updates", and go with something that inspires you, makes it FUN to take video, AND is smaller/lighter. Absolutely the best way to go. Except if I was you I'd go with a G9ii vs Fuji/Nikon. 300 fps. Nice. :) And maybe an S5ii for the studio - which also allows you to continue to use full frame and great lenses (Leica/Zeiss) as well some of the classic FF lenses. But hey Fuji is awesome...those colors...magic.

If Sony is perfect minus "too sharp" (Which can be unsharpened) and color science. With 10 bit 4:22 isn't color easily manipulated with your favorite LUT to match your camera of choice? Genuine question here.. You may have found the perfect camera unless you are simply yearning for the journey.

I feel your pain haha!! Long time Fuji shooter here, and I've been making a wildlife doc on my XT3 with mainly the 70-300 which is such a great light set up. I also have a sony A74 though, and have come to really appreciate that great AF and colour depth. I have the same 200-600 you're showing here, and agree that it's bonkers heavy to use handheld - so I've been eyeballing a ZV-E1 with the 70-200 f/4 and possibly the 2x Tele since this gives both reach and macro capabilities and would be a lot lighter than the 200-600 / A74 combo. I already feel though that I'd miss the EVF and portability of the Fuji... but keep getting drawn to that wildly good AF and low light performance wondering if it'll help me nail shots that I've missed with the Fuji. The struggle is real, and the sweet spot is elusive! There has to be a mathematical formula that'll solve this... :D

I always think of Fuji as that absolutely utterly gorgeous, for life partner. They may not be the brightest, and might make the odd mistake in company, but they are funny and beautiful inside and out and every night when you wish them goodnight you thank your lucky stars how fortunate you are to have them. Yes there may be slightly more attractive and certainly more intelligent people out there, but they don't have the same heart as the Fuji.

I have the Fuji XH2s with 70-300 lens and find it a magical combo. The lens can get so close it borders on macro and yet is equivalent to nearly 600mm at 120fps, yet is so light and easy to carry. There have been a few firmware updates that have improved the AF but I still use BB focus and the manual for wildlife.

Road construction is a government- private sector money laundering scheme. They take years to do so little work, they park the construction equipment there even when not used, and every day the equipment sits on site, the company gets paid as if they are actually doing work. The government budgets get bigger, the construction companies make more money too. It took 1 year to construct Yankee Stadium (private) but it takes 2 years to finish an intersection at your local city level. Total scam.

After switching from Sony to the OM-1 and then getting another FF system with Nikon 180-600.. I am thinking of just going back to the om-1 with the 75-300 (or 300 pro if I could afford at some point). The size is everything. The footage is excellent from FF but at the end of the day, there is ZERO fun factor in aiming and carrying a FF camera with a giant telephoto. I am admittedly curious what the fuji h3s will end up being. I've never used fuji but it seems like such a perfect balance between cost/size, but the h2s definitely lacks compared to competition.

I am unhappy with A7 IV + 200-600. It does not bring any fun part, because of the weight. If Sony made 600 mm f6.3 alone, as Nikon, that would change the game. Untill that I think I will switch to OM-1 and 300 mm f4 pro, as the weight is really a BIG factor.
@BlazeFirereign
@BlazeFirereign 4 месяца назад
I can speak from experience that the results from the OM-1 and the 300 Pro are fantastic, although I can't say how they compare to FF, and the lack of zoom can definitely be a challenge when trying to track birds in flight! That said, I've ended up selling it, just because I haven't used it "properly" in a while and even though it's a lightweight compared to most wildlife telephotos, I was still fed up with taking it to places and not using it much. I'm considering the 75-300 (or Lumix 100-300) as a replacement - no doubt "worse", but something I'm not upset about carrying everywhere and using infrequently.
@pentagramyt417
@pentagramyt417 4 месяца назад
@@BlazeFirereign Most important thing is, it needs to bring you the joy! You see, sometimes it's not GAS syndrome but struggling with a gear that takes the aspect of enjoying the photography. Mine photos are made mostly at 600 mm with APS-C mode - 900 mm then. I'd be walking with x1.4 TC ~75% of my time. Would it take the fun of shooting? I don't know. I did not try to lock my 200-600 at the full end, and crop to 900 mm and try to find my subject with size of a Great Tit, in the area full of branches. I know though how 3 KILOGRAMS of weight takes the fun out when your arms are gased out after handholding this horizontal in the air after 40 seconds. You are done for minutes, and then you are not that strong again, so it makes even worse than aiming a target with 840/1200 mm focal length. Find what makes you unhappy, and threw out of your mind those 600 mm f4 big FF guns if ever think about them, choose what really will make you happy in your area.
@noctivagance_imagery
@noctivagance_imagery 4 месяца назад
@@BlazeFirereign I've used the 300 pro and FF. I liked my shots with the 300 pro better 'on average' because I was whipping it around and shooting more in result of it. The best FF shots are superior to the best M43 shots, but I find myself being more critical of FF ones because the weight and size makes it *feel* like the shots should be better than they are, but more often than not they're just your average photo. Casey's channel is really the best example of this. Side to side the FF is clearly better, but 'on average' you probably would be pressed to find a true difference when not directly comparing.
@BlazeFirereign
@BlazeFirereign 4 месяца назад
@@noctivagance_imagery I love some of the shots I've taken with the 300. I've got a couple prints at 60x40cm and I've got no complaints at all about the level of detail. And the size and weight of the lens was perfect for spending a couple hours dedicated to wildlife photography. It's unfortunate that I just wasn't finding many opportunities for dedicated wildlife photography and, small as it might be compared to the massive FF super-telephoto primes, it was still too much lens for me to keep in my camera bag just in case there's an opportunity. I might well regret selling it, we'll see. I'm still contemplating getting something like the 75-300 as a lens that I _would_ be happy to leave in my camera bag most of the time just in case there were some wildlife opportunities. I'm sure the quality won't be the same, though.

A big pointless bridge was just finished near my home and it cuts through the more peaceful part of my bike ride to my favorite nature spot as well as a nice neigborhood The design is so stupid, cause it crosses a valley, but rather than keep the whole thing high they made a low point with an intersection that didn't need to be there, exactly where all the homes and farms are, so all the exhaust just floods the neighborhood as the bridge has noise barriers on both sides just funneling it down. The Sony 200-600 is an excellent lens, but it's NOT a walk-around lens. My current fav light weight high-performance walk-around setup is the Z8 + 600pf. Not cheap, but it outperforms anything I can think of for birding.

Sony 200-600 is as heavy as the earth and is a CA dumpster fire. Especially since 1.4x is required for skittish animals fuji 150-600 has great stabe, but the rear element is dime sized, and as so, is not even prosumer quality. Oly 150-400 is great for AF, but no MF clutch. Be interesting on a G9II for video but the stabe would be bad.

While the overall autofocus performance of my Nikon Z7 II often feels like a little guy who lost his glasses operates the AF from inside the camera, I am very happy with the images I get with the 180-600. The focus is snappy, it feels well balanced, the VR is great for handheld video and while it does look a bit clinical it's not the wost I've seen.

what a great video, I have been wondering what happened to your wildlife days, I miss those days of you in the wild, lots of philosophy and comedy in nature, waiting for you to become a street photographer next. Patience, have you tried the Fuji XH2s with latest firmware, its my favorite Fuji, every, for now, until the new compact full frame Lumix next month ?

Your point about cameras and animals preferring them does make sense, birds are very observant and that Sony lens is huge. This is why David Attenborough always uses the Olympus 75-300

David Attenborough stands in front and says his piece to camera, someone else films him and many different cameras and lens combos are used, I doubt if the Oly 70-300mm is one of them and its all filmed on big heavy tripods

Switched from xt5 and 150-600 to canon R7 and 500 F4 IS mark 1. So much more fun even when the thing weighs 13 pounds. It’s like carrying a mini tank around and the sharpness is impeccable. Using a monopod with wimberly monogimbal and eventually gonna get a sharp shooter harness

@chiliman7662 4 месяца назад
Hey so I used to have the 200-600 and I used it much like you have used it; walks, looking for wildlife, handheld. Rotate the tripod foot to the top of the lens. You're not using a monopod or tripod anyways and it makes it easier to handhold.
@cameraconspiracies
@cameraconspiracies 4 месяца назад
It's not easier like that, it makes it very hard to zoom and manual focus with the weight.
@chiliman7662
@chiliman7662 4 месяца назад
@@cameraconspiracies Yea the weight is the weight, no way around that. It does give more stability since your hand is holding the lens and not the foot. I hear ya though, lighter and easier to handhold is the dream, ain't it?

I have that Sony zoom lens. My American animals love it. I'm so sorry that your Canadian animals don't feel the same. Solution, give me the lens because it belongs somewhere it will be loved. And btw, I use a tripod. I have no issues "holding" the lens or with wavy footage in my videos. I also have the light Olympus 75-300mm. I don't use it much at all because the 300mm f/4 prime is so much better. But then again, I like sharp pictures with good detail. While you probably have dull knives in your kitchen.

Yeah, we're all chasing the perfect setup instead of perfecting our craft. I started with the Fuji X-T2 and the 100-400mm. It was great but I got sucked into buying the X-T5. Files were too big and it seemed too digital to me so I thought I 'd go full frame and purchased the Z6ii and the 180-600mm. Great lens but the autofocus on the Z6ii is no better than the Fuji. Wildlife shots are much more detailed however. Maybe the Z6iii? I'll keep searching for the perfect setup.

I just bought a Nikon 1 V3 with the grip and viewfinder just to support the “1 NIKKOR” 70-300 VR to get the lightest mirrorless lens that will get me out to 800mm on a handy system. Sure, it’s 1080/60, but if I really have to, I guess I can Topaz it. I got sick of carrying around my Canon 100-400 IS L USM, 1.4x extender and RF adapter on the R6, and didn’t want to spend $2700 on a 100-500 RF. If the V3 with no AA filter and phase detect AF is anywhere close the Nikon 1 J5 I’ve got, this is going to be good.

Don't you want to try some new Sony APS-C camera - like fx30 or a6700 - with small and lightweight lens like Sony 70-350 ? Or even with newer Sigma 500 5.6 lens, which is ~1kg lighter than 200-600. And you can always use that camera with 200-600 too instead of a (or with a) teleconverter. I mean, I never thought Sony 200-600 + FF camera is a good video setup - unless you have a big heavy tripod which you can bring in a car or something. For me it is more like a photo setup.

2 weeks ago I sold my full frame 150-600mm lens, in favour of my M4/3 economy 100-300 Panasonic. Because no one cares about the crispness or sharpness and low lightness of your stuff, it's not a real job lol. And photo competitions can go to a special hell. Might as well just enjoy the cosy light weight walk and take the occasional peaceful shots just because.. it was there and you felt like it. It will get the same likes and I get to enjoy life more lol.

You was using cheap.long lenses on the fuji system so it's not equivalent.. if sigma was to make a 500mm prime like on sony for fuji the footage would be sharper on fuji xh2s over a7s3 60p and not sure about 120p.
