Having a good wetsuit is such a gamechanger! I rented wetsuits for like half a year, and they were of varied quality. I think my turning point was when I rented a back zip that would unzip every time I turtlerolled, which lead to me being flushed by 5 degree water. Now I have a 6/5/4mm Xcel suit (with an attached hood) and it keeps me so warm!! I'll take it off after a session and it's still dry in some places! Wild experience, 10/10 would recommend

nice vid! out here in michigan if you dont have 5mm all around you dont last,, unfortunately 90% of our waves r wind driven so when it get cold it gets COLD!!! the attached hood is key... cheers!

I love the excel, after many years I bought a Portuguese "janga" wetsuit and I must say that I am finding myself very well, warm and elastic

I like the look of the Xcel suits. got my first chest zip built in hood suit this year. 5:4 Rip Curl Dawn Patrol Warmth. Like you said a built in hood is so much less restrictive than expected. My separate hoods used to give me neck ache. We're down to 6C in the sea on the Yorkshire coast and the suit is doing well, but the lack of lining across the shoulders means the wind chill gets me a bit if I'm sat around a lot. I've caught at least 1 wave a week for the past 13 weeks. so hoping to keep going.

That's awesome John!! Yeah I get neck ache whenever I wear the detached hood! There's just too much neoprene lol! Damn that is some cold water in Yorkshire! That's more waves than I'm getting at the moment!! Super onshore winds here and messy big waves!!

A good wetsuit makes all the difference and surfing year round is way more fun. I use my 5/4 hooded all winter, water temps here can get as low as 3 degrees (38F) but it holds up!

I agree! A good wetsuit is a life saver! I find myself going in on those early cold mornings because I have a good wetsuit and I know it’ll keep me warm!

I think the Rip Curl hoods run small in general. I ordered one years ago and tried it on - it may have fit a child, but not an adult. Bought an Excel hood instead and it was so much easier to pull over the head/turn. Excel is an underrated brand, imo. Very practical gear.

ah so I'm not the only one thinking that about the rip curl hood! Plus my one is very old, maybe their technology has improved!! omg I agree Xcel is the best wetsuit/gear I've had to date!! Really happy with it!

@@erikawhitesurf Rip Curl seems to have been going down in quality in the last 5 or so years - they obtained new owners. That Xcel wetsuit looked great with the built-in hood!

I got an Rip Curl Ebomb in 4/3 recently and its changed surfing completely for me. Crazy comfortable. A good suit makes all the difference. *The reason booties have split toe (as far as I know) is to prevent them from rolling around on your foot.

I’m quite surprised to hear you have a 6mm (very jealous of the drylock) common up here on the east coast but I thought most wore a 5/4 in Cornwall winter. Last couple of years I’ve actually used an xcel hooded thermal rash vest to theoretically bump up my 5/3 in winter to a 6 and likewise my 3/2 to a 4 in autumn/spring, worked quite well.
