The fact that he wrote them all down on paper and then into the bracket when he could've just done it straight from storygraph into the bracket is HILARIOUS to me.
the whole un-edited section of you typing in the names and just chatting about whatever came to your mind was honestly the best kind of content i needed after being home alone in my flat for the weekend. somehow it made me feel re-energized in an introverted way where i was actively listening, but not needing to respond just for the sake of it. it made me appreciate you as a person and a content creator even more than i already did
at this point how am i NOT supposed to develop a parasocial relationship with jack if he says that we're "just hanging out" and "having a lil facetime"??
At first I thought this would be a bracket with one book from each country in the world cup, might be an interesting idea (though it would be hard to find that diverse a variety of books)
while i agree that human rights should never be violated (duh), i think people need to realise that this isn't new. the same thing happened at the last world cup in russia but people and the media were not nearly as critical of it. i completely agree that fifa needs to heavily regulate these countries but its been happening qatar isn't anything new and yet its getting way more criticism which is giving islamophobic. not to jack ofc but just a comment on the general public, because it is hypocritical when russia 2018 where many central asian and korean migrants died because of working conditions yet the media outrage wasn't anything close to this. same thing with brazil. we need to be critical but i think the spotlight on qatar in western media is because its a middle eastern country not because of human rights when you consider that no country is morally superior (englands kits are made off of underpaid bangladeshi workers) and fifa has a history of this. the criticism towards qatar have propelled them to reforms which is absolutely necessary however i just wish everyone would put this energy on all the previous and future world cups because right now western media are falling back on islamophobia to criticise the nation. no hate to jack but i just wanted to provide this perspective
Russia is at least a footballing nation whereas Qatar is not and was chosen by FIFA purely for financial gain. Also on the topic of hypocrisy, Russia are banned from this year’s World Cup - Israel are there despite the appalling treatment of Palestinians and the apartheid state.
Also the fact that quatar is not in charge of anything exept the money and the visas ans stuff but building and workers are the responsibilities of the fifa and western investors
@@Christine-jg2ch so ur saying usa is footballing nation? because i better see this criticism next world cup. but i agree that isra*l should be banned alongside russia
i've read a bit over 32 books in GENERAL this year and you've read 32 rated between 3.75 and 4 😅it would be great if at the end of the year u made a video on how u read so much and fit it into ur schedule to help people for the new year
Well he is an English major and reading and making content about reading is his job so... I think he finds time by just.. having time? Which isnt useful but it's true.
@@shoe777 i know but he still makes time to read books for his content and all that just emphasises how busy he is so he must have some tips on how to read longer and more
I’ve read over 200. My biggest secret, other than being able to read really fast, is to read 4-5 books at a time. Sitting with one book for a long time drags my interest down. I generally have a nonfic, fantasy, historical fic, classic, and thriller going at any time.
i do agree that qatar has some issues, however previous hosting countries had multiple issues and way more human rights violations and no one batted an eye, its not an excuse but it just shows the double standards when it comes to arab countries
i agree with what you said about qatar however i have this feeling that whenever something happens in a middle eastern country everyone is so concerned about human rights but no one bats an eye at anything wrong that happens in the western countries. for example, you also visited france, which is a country where muslim people (especially hijabi/niqabi women) cannot exist in peace because of the views of the government on muslim people and islam. of course this doesn't mean i support qatar's views but i think there is a double standard going on...
Thank you so much for mentioning this. Like, as a part of the community plus being an expat and a woman living in UAE (practically same as Qatar), I truly appreciate Jack for taking a stand against Qatar. But also as a Muslim born woman, it's sad how he doesn't even acknowledge how there have been cases of verbal harassment and literal physical aggression towards hijabis in France. Again, being both Muslim and from the community, neither East nor West is safe lol. I constantly joke that I will move to either Arctic Circle or Antarctica with my girlfriend because the polar bears don't give a shit about our sexuality or the fact that she wears hijab.
completely agree with you, theres definitely a double standard going on with the world cup. i'm qatari and i agree qatar isn't perfect, no country is, the way people are completely turning a blind eye to the violation of human rights (esp muslim human rights!!!) in western countries is insane !!! the hypocrisy is crazy
plus the day he uploads this, a muslim woman was called a slur and then slashed across the face in New York, where he lives, no mention of the USA's, UK's and France's blatant islamophobia (and mistreatment of Muslim women). Plus these countries are not innocent when it comes to migrant labor or migrants period. It would have been useful to not have an orientalist notion of "those" backward people versus "us"
Very well said. For instance I see the western media constantly talk about these issues and even they themselves are supplying other countries with weapons which kills innocent children like we see in Yemen and Palestine, This kind of double-standard really irritates me because I can never understand whether they actually care about human rights in general or they only care when it directly has an impact on them🤷🏻♂️
Wouldn’t it be cool to pick a book from each country that is playing in the world cup? This would be a nice focus on other things from these countries instead of the controversial world cup.
@@ilaydaC. criticizing an arab and muslim country while being silent about israel, russia, china, etc. has intense islamophobic and racist undertones. foreigners who don't know anything about the freedom of women in other societies label them as sexist. i would say qatari society is more open to women than american or british ones. it ws muslims and arabs who first abolished slavery and gave women voting rights.
As someone who worked as a cook in the restaurant buisness, Im happier when people ask to take their food to go instead of throwing it away. The amount of food I've seen end up in the bin just makes me feel bad at the end of every shift, especially since we are usually the ones who empty them
As someone from Qatar who was watching Jack for years this is really sad. It is sad that people will find any issue with the World Cup and make a way to boycott. Qatar is aware of the human rights violations and instead of hiding it under a rug like the west we will say there names. And it is sad when people talk about the problem in the Middle East they talk about them not supporting the LGBTQ+ community rather then talking about the human rights violations that is happening to Middle Eastern in the Gaza Strip and in Yemen. I have seen it in booktalk so many time the sad truth is not everyone will except everyone , especially in a small country like Qatar which most of the population are strongly Muslims. The Qatari people have exited for this occasion for a really long time. it is the first country in the Middle East to host the World Cup.
totally agree. I was really disappointed - every youtuber suddenly has no issue proclaiming their critism of this world cup but it's dead silence and "I don't get political" when it comes to similar or worse issues with either the previous world cup hosts like Russia or current human rights abuses in SWANA, from palestine to Iraq. And every time women's issues are brought up as a woman i just have to laugh, because it is so clear that they see the entire middle east as completely interchangeable. They couldn't mention a single woman on the front lines of change in Qatar because they don't know care to know anything about women in Qatar, not because they aren't visible, and they don't know even the most basic differences between Iran, Syria and Dubai. "Brown" people are one interchangeable unnuanced social issue to them. And it really is no better in the countries vitue signaling right now. it's purely racist and orientalist rhetoric.
Loved the one-take video! Basically my favorite “method” of filming because I feel like I’m just hanging in the room with them and it’s goofy fun, especially at 10:45 😄
When Emma did the World Cup of Books Video I actually thought that it would also be great for Jack in the Books video. Amazing that it actually happened. I love both of your channels, so that was really fun to see the both of you run their book World Cup 2022.
Oh HEY! Ooh very clever twist on doing your second tier books, I had the same issue with not wanting to spoil my favourites of the year - but oops I did. Fab books in your bracket, I loved a lot of those this year too 🥰
Thanks for your disclaimer at the beginning. Just here to remind people that Qatar isn't the only host with dirty hands and this is something we had 12 years to protest against. The next world cup will be held in Canada, Mexico and the US. I don't see the crimes and human rights violations of these countries (past or even very recent ones, which they have plenty of) pitted against them for being hosts. I'm not defending Qatar just wanted to shed light into this double moral, orientalism and low key Islamophobia from some people. Something to think about. Not accusing anyone. Just dropping it here.. Let's just enjoy reading.
Forreal .. people suddenly care so much because the worldcup is being hosted in qatar and they wanna talk about human rights and equality but white countries till this day struggle with police brutality and equality .. doesnt make sense at all lol
@@pauladelreyson they're litr just saying criticizing an arab and muslim country while being silent about israel, russia, china, etc. has intense islamophobic and racist undertones, and they are right. foreigners who don't know anything about the freedom of women in other societies label them as sexist. i would say qatari society is more open to women than american or british ones. it ws muslims and arabs who first abolished slavery and gave women voting rights.
I’ve always thought that the rating right after reading a book is completely different than the rating of how it sticks with you months later. Would be so cool to see a vid on comparing book ratings based on both!
there should be criticism but when it only goes for one country and every other (specifically for western) country isnt criticised for their human rights violations it feels very performative
Exactly, there is no mention of the USA's, UK's and France's (3 places he has lived) blatant islamophobia (and mistreatment of Muslim women). These countries are not innocent when it comes to migrant labor or migrants period. It would have been useful to not have an orientalist notion of "those" backward people versus "us"
Funny nobody said anything when the WC was held in russia and South Africa 🙄 and we see human rights violations happening there every day please consider keeping the moral compass for every country and not just middle eastern ones
JACK! I'm such a huge fan of you and you have inspired me to read so much more. I also just moved to Manhattan for college this fall and it's so comforting knowing you're out here in the city too. Hope you are well!
Loved the one take and chatting with you, burst out laughing of joy cause i still can't believe how such a wholesome and fabulous character as you can exist, loved that the actual competition was the shortest part of the video and i can honestly say that it was the best video I've seen in a long time even though it was seemingly quite easy and enjoyable to film and edit! sending you Love
I watched Drinking By My Shelf’s version of this the other day. I love that it inspired you and also love how much emotion you both used in choosing which ones you enjoyed more. Such hard decisions!
Literally LOVE you! Tha whole part of you putting in the names and just chatting about anything and everything- guys l, come on. Jack is so adorable and funny it's actually overwhelming
Jack: "I should bring my own container, but that'd be a bit too much" Me: I've been bringing my own containers for a while and everytime my friends see it for the first time they cringe but everyone around me (customers and staff) think it's super cool! Already amazing not to waste tho, it took me some time to build up the courage tbh.
I just wanted to say few things for you Jack amd for everyone else about Qatar (bty my English is so bad ) 1-the western media claimed that there is 600,000 worker died while building the stadiums for the world cup ; however , this number is actually the nuber of the people who died in Qater since they anounsed the the world cup will be Qater . And honey don’t forget the fact that there was a pandemic and people dies. Yet , yes there is some workers who died during the construction process but the number of them is 60 in 10 years and not 600 000 . And i am not here saying that there lives do not mater ;however, Qatar should pay more atention for the safty of the workers Media just want to present Qatar in a way that make it look a bad country because they are not white with blue eyes 2 - the lgbtq community is not banned from attending the games , their are only not allowed to wear the lgbtq flag .And they are not allowed to kiss or have any “physcial interaction “ in public , and this is not for gays but also for straight people. This is agents the islamic religion and in Qatar they are not hating the lqbtq community but just have different culture . And the world should respect them if they want them to respect the rest of the world culture. Western world should stop asking the whole word to follow them , because they are white does not mean their ideas about how to live the world are right . Leave the rest of the world alone . 3- about women rights ? Give me one country that give them their rights ….at least Qatar gives their women rights more than many countries . I don’t know wear did you bring your information but I am sure they are from a wight racist guy or from wikipedia . I really respect you Jack and love watching your videos but you should know the true before judge people and say that they don’t care about humans right.
This comment shows how ignorant you are. Queer people in Qatar are disappearing and dying EVERY day, week, month, and the goverment does not give a shit. People in qatar literally beat People on the street who they THINK are gay. Queer people get killed by their families and you are saying these are just believes? When your believes cause thousands of people DEATH, u can't come here and say people should respect you
Take the Tupperware box, grab one of those collapsible ones to fit in your tote bag. That way you can even grab other food people leave laying about at events
Hey Jack! I just wanted to say I genuinely adore ur videos and they make my day. I just wanted to comment on what you said about the World Cup and Qatar, this isn’t hate to u at all but I would like to clear something up. Qatar’s separation of men and women’s doors is not at all anything against women! (As an Arab Muslim women, who is also a feminist) take into account that Qatar is a Muslim country, for us Muslim women, we feel much more comfortable with separations, etc. So I find very ignorant when foreigners who don’t know much about Qatar or Islam comment on that. That’s the reasoning behind it and it’s not in anyway against women.
Plus the 'mistreatment of women' Jack mentions is ignoring the hate crimes in the UK and US. These countries are anything but innocent when it comes to migrant labor or migrants period. It would have been useful to not have an orientalist notion of "those" backward people versus "us." I am very disappointed actually.
Hypocrisy of the western media and general public is even more astonishing now. They aren’t able to digest the fact that the image of the Muslim world can be positive too, they prefer the usual :)
It would be so cool if you did this again, except you had to pick books written by authors from each of the countries actually playing in the world cup, and you pitted the same countries against each other as in the real world cup!
literally, I felt like he was confusing other countries in the region and treating them as interchangeable like many have been doing. Really ignorant and disappointing.
I think is a really valid to critique the World Cup and where is being held. However, I do feel that europeans and Americans in general tend to have a double standard in which they only judge some countries. For example, I agree that Qatar is horrible, but so is the country you are now living in, the US. If I had to list all the things the United States did, this commentary would be huge, but even if you only take Iraq, Afghanistan, Vietnam, Hiroshima and Nagasaki and Korea, it's already ten times worse than Qatar. Not to mention the conditions immigrants have to live when trying to cross us borders, to say something contemporary. I think it's really important to criticise Qatar and especially FIFA, although I can't help but notice that that criticism starts and ends in the arabic world.
There’s an 86% chance you won’t give a hoot, but this inspired me to make my own World Cup of Books video! And I used books from the countries that actually made it through to the knockout stages. Thanks so much for the inspiration 🙌
I don't usually comment but I wanted to emphasize what some others have pointed out. I really enjoy watching your videos Jack, but I'm disappointed at the ignorance of some people in the Western world. The Western media is quick to point fingers when Middle Eastern countries don't uphold human rights, but look away when countries like China and the US host sports despite their well-known issues. Please keep this in mind before being hypocritical and selectively boycotting. Qatar should be held accountable for some of their actions no doubt, but to speak up only when they do something wrong and not when others around the world do gives off sentiments of blatant Islamophobia and discrimination. Also, just to make it clear, Qatar is a predominantly Muslim country with its own religious practices and culture, so people should respect the rules when they come to visit (as long as they are not being harmed directly). I agree that the treatment of foreign workers is a problem, but speaking up about women's rights when they're not an issue and just a part of the religion is ignorant. Regardless, thank you for speaking up and bringing awareness to this matter.
to-go boxes are such a common thing in the US that I was really confused by your mentioning of your friends giving you a hard time over it. sent me down a little rabbit hole of google searches and I learned a new thing today because of it!
If your comments about Qatar don't remain the same for the next World Cup with US being 1/3 host for all their human rights violations, it's just plain hypocrisy.
@@diya-hn2wy . . you do realise we are talking about the united states of America. forget their ridiculous internal affairs but have you seen their foreign affairs track record lol. . to this day? be fr
look i am never gonna defend the US for their policies but if we’re talking about football and football players and other people working in fifa do not feel safe in Qatar i think it deserves consideration. I don’t think extremist religious ideology should be forced onto sports. like be fr i don’t think queer players feel the same level of fear in the US as they do in Qatar even after all the shit that’s been going on
@@diya-hn2wy y’all know NOTHING about the Arab world 😂😂😂 I literally feel MUCH SAFER walking in Qatar than in nyc lmao y’all are so brainwashed it’s CRAZYYYY
I’m not trying to be dramatic or anything, but Jack’s comment about Qatar really hurt 💔 like people who have never visited the country or aren’t familiar with the culture/religion of the country, only get their information from biased sources and shouldn’t really be one to talk… I, a woman, personally visited Qatar DURING the World Cup, and it was the most peaceful, friendly nation I have EVER visited, which makes sense considering their religion is Islam, the most peaceful and fair religion of all ❤ The double standard that some people (especially WHITE people) have towards Qatar specifically hosting the World Cup, when other controversial countries have hosted it and done severe damage, just displays blatant racism and islamophobia. Like you can’t pick and choose your own definition of what constitutes human rights. Learn and grow please (with peace and love)
Hi! New to this channel, but loving the videos so far! I have a video idea for you, please do this world cup style concept, but choose books from countries or set in countries in the world cup. Maybe books from countries you haven't read much of? Thank you! x
Thanks for another great video! I appreciate you sharing it. I hope if you decide to do this again next year, you might do it more like it was done on the Drinking by my Shelf channel, with fewer book choices. She went into a lot more explanations of the books, why she was making the choices she did, and I loved the penalties when she couldn't decide between two books! I would love to see you do this, too, it made it very exciting and made me stop the video several times to check out books I may want to read based on her descriptions and thoughts. Sorry if I'm being too critical. I really did enjoy your video, always enjoy them and never miss one!
If you liked Warsan Shire’s newer anthology she has another called teaching my mother how to give birth. I hated poetry because of GCSE English but we did A-level coursework on Shire and it changed my view on poetry in general. It’s a great read but be aware of the list of trigger warnings as it’s about women’s experiences in war. It’s quite short and the version I have is published by mouthmark so I think you may have to get it online.
Qatar has issues! so funny. The last time I checked Russia and South Africa (the last two hosts) had the same issues. Jack I really like your content but you need to check your moral compass again and stop following the media blindly.

SO much fun. Coincidentally I just finished Circe yesterday which I LOVED and had pulled out Ariadne to read next so now I'm really excited to crack on with it! Talking to a friend yesterday about how odd it is that I love Greek mythology so much but am really not fond of fantasy, even the top rated. Why is that? I think you're the same Jack.
such a fun video! i was inspired by this and did it with my top 32 books of the year and came out at the end with swimming in the dark, open water, the mountains sing and lessons in chemistry - an incredibly hard choice but i went for the mountains sing as my top book! :)
While I agree that, in a perfect world we'd have international competitions only where ethnic and religious minorities, LGBT community members, those with disabilities, and political opposition groups were treated equally, where gender equality, children's rights, and economic disparity were all non issues, and where cultural and minority indigenus linguistic equality was the norm, but exactly where would that leave us? Certainly not with the Mexico/US/Canada World Cup in 2026.
I'm quite disappointed in the comments about boycotting the current world cup because of the Qatari state. Of course you don't have to watch it if you don't want to - I have no interest in football, so naturally I'm not watching it either. But your logic seems flawed. Women and minority groups, such as migrant workers or the lgbt community as you've mentioned, face discrimination, by the state or otherwise, in every single country the world cup is held in. Women and minorities are far from safe in North America (namely, the U.S, Canada & Mexico), where the next world cup is being held. The U.S is unsafe for the Black community, for Muslims (or those perceived as Muslims), migrants are kept in cages on the U.S-Mexican border, undocumented migrant workers are exploited for low wages, indigenous rights are continuously violated in all three countries. The rate of femicide in Mexico is ridiculously high and the Mexican state does nothing to protect them. Abortion rights and trans rights are at a constant risk of being violated in several U.S states. And that is only scratching the surface. But I highly doubt people will be boycotting the 2026 world cup for any of these reasons. Maybe it's just me, but I really don't see a difference in where the world cup is held. And I find it hypocritical to isolate the world cup from a country's politics in some places, but then attach it to the political state of a country when its held in Qatar.
ok but the levels of violations are incomparable. i mean you cant isolate politics from the world cup when they are making rules about how people are allowed behave during the world cup, and are committing huge violatations against people involved in the world cup. look i am by no means a believer that the US has a good system or anything figured out but the level of danger for minorities is DEFINITELY worlds apart
Trust me its just the double standards, this energy wouldn't stand if the world cup was held in france or maybe... Brazil??? Oh wait that happened and they didn't have an issue with it.
Great video, Jack!!! I'd love to hear more about your favourite channels/creators/podcasts/shows etc... I've just checked out Drinking By My Shelf and I LOVE her videos.
