It was a humbling experience when I started trying to recondition tapers on my benchtop lathe. I think I made every possible mistake, and may have invented some new ones.
The experiment I made here seemingly produced a good result. Not perfect, but within +/- 1/100mm runout and no appreciable taper error . As this is as read on a test bar inserted in the taper it also adds in any error from the spindle bearings/seat
@@jansverrehaugjord9934 - Is the male taper used as the lap, affected badly? Using steel as the lap, on the steel spindle taper, means the abrasive should not be embedding in either surface. How would you check if any abrasive HAD gotten embedded in the spindle taper?
@@somebodyelse6673 Good question. The sacrificial drill taper isn't that bad, but I suppose some material is lost. The female spindle taper Looks/feels OK, but if there is any embedded material it is not that critical as it is supposed to be used as a static fit anyway ie. not as bad as it would have been in say a bronze bearing. Not sure really how much the spindle taper is used.. possibly only if you use direct MT2 collets and/or drills?
