A quick run through of my Myford Super 7 lathe.
Manufactured in 1996, I purchased this lathe recently after having been using a Warco WM180 for the past few years. The lathe came with quite a comprehensive amount of tooling , three chucks, face plates etc.
Sat pretty much unused for the last ten years the lathe needed nothing more than a good wipe down, a de-gunk and re-oil. Prior to that it was lightly used for model engineering cutting mainly brasss and aluminium.
Ive added a few tasty extras such as Myford swivelling slide, rear tool post and a DRO set.
Ive manufactured a swarf tray, chuck mount and slide protectors for the carriage and the DRO.
I also made the tailstock DRO using a set of old digital calipers which is very worthwhile doing and easy to make.
DRO set from
www.Machine-dro.co.uk
Was easy to install and hopefully will tighten up my tolerances !!

Hi we are RDG TOOLS a Model Engineering tool company based in Mytholmroyd West Yorkshire. We sell new and used tools. We also own the Myford Lathes Brand. We took over Myford around 12 years ago. Both company's are in the same building and we are open to the public. We are still building new Myford lathes and refurbished Myford lathes.

Hi Bones. I have the Super 7 B grey imperial. With gear box. By changing 2 gears at the end for 33tpi & 34 i think you can then cut most metric threads. I bought these some time ago but as yet not fitted. I will be doing a in depth youtube video soon. I have done some already that you may like to have a look at. Great looking machine you have . Regards. Steve.

@Steviegtr52
@Steviegtr52 3 года назад
@@bonesshed. I think that is correct that maybe the metric version is different. What i was meaning was that by changing 2 gears behind the cover you can do most metric threads. I does not turn the machine into a metric. Just a work around. I have somewhere a chart showing the threads that can be cut. I got the info from the Model engineers Forum that i am a member of. There is a lot of information on the Myford lathes on there , as a lot of members have them. Steve.

Thank you :-) The are very versatile, Probably not as usable as other lathes out there ( the bore for eg is small :-( ) but there are workarounds for most situations and I like the 'feel' of the Myfords, and they look just great ! :-)

@andrewmoyes246 3 года назад
Very nice lathe, well done. You mention that you might swap the gearbox for a metric one at some point. Myford never made a metric gearbox or leadscrew. But all you need to cut metric gears are a 33 tooth and 34 tooth gears so it's not a major problem.

Great looking Super 7. I'd be interested to know more about how the M-DRO was fitted, especially for x axis on the cross slide? In the video I can't tell if it's on the tailstock end or headstock end of the cross slide. Also I assume the longitudinal z axis is fitted across the rear of the bed? Thanks.
@bonesshed.
@bonesshed. 3 года назад
Hi Terry. The magnetic sensor for the cross slide is fitted to the side of the slide via a T section of ali extrusion. I added an aluminium swarf shield which you can see at @00:53 The other sensor is fitted at the back of the lathe via another extrusion. It was quite easy to fit .

A great lathe for sure! btw at 2:59 in your video I can see a guard over the bed - this is an excellent idea that I will replicate on my lathe. I cannot however see any screw holes, what have you got it attached to? I'm thinking of doing the upgrade to my cross slide end bearing with a pair of thrust bearings to basically take out the small amount of backlash. Nice work on the tailstock DRO as well, that's also on my list! Thanks for the video.

Hi John. The tool post is a Dixons like affair, not sure of specific brand but it works well. Yes, I had to grind down the tools as I ordered 12mm and they bloomin well just didnt fit in the holders !!
@millomweb
@millomweb 3 года назад
Why is it so noisy when running - or was the source of the noise the drive to the leadscrew ? Leadscrew gearbox - does it have any 'metric' pitches ? Are the spindle bearings ball/roller ? If so, that might be the noise. The ML7 was just bushes and quiet ! There's a knob for slackening the belts. Do use it - I think it's mainly to stop 'flat bits' developing on the belts where the belts are stationary on the pulleys - hence maintaining really smooth running when used. Keep an eye on the motor temperature - if you get to do big work on it you might find you get enforced coffee breaks as we used to occasionally ! (ours was not super) Other than that, they seem to be excellent machines for that size.

Lovely machine. I've been looking at the Chinese lathes that have a milling machine built in and look super modern etc for similar price to a new super 7 but I think I'd prefer yours.
@bonesshed.
@bonesshed. 3 года назад
Thank you Ronan. The Super 7 isnt without faults or limitations but I generally find I can find a work around. I think those lathe mill combos could be quite useful if space is limited though and as long as youre not doing anything too heavy duty. I havent tried one but did think about one some time ago. If you do get a Myford not only do they feel and look nice to use, they hold their value well, unlike the chinese made stuff !
@millomweb
@millomweb 3 года назад
I feel sorry for you as that's a tough choice ! I ought to suggest the Myford but may tend towards the Chinese which seem to be ok. If you go for a combo, get the tallest one you can find - it seems head height is limited unless you can find stubby drills. By the time you've added a vice etc. it soon eats in to the available height space.
