According to the author Myne actually didn't reincarnate taking over Myne's body, but rather awakened her own memories from her past life, so her mother would likely no longer be alive, here is someones translation of it: "She says that how she thought of it when writing was that Urano's memory and personality from her past life were at the bottom, and memories of the next life wrap up and cover those memories, developing Myne's consciousness. The manga just had Myne attempting to communicate to the vision of her mother that she was sorry, whereas the anime showed you that she was sorry by illustrating what their relationship was actually like while she was alive, and the regret Myne felt letting it get to that point. Classic show vs tell. In what world is the manga version more emotional? Ngl, you had me hyped to read an alternative take on this scene, but after reading it all I can say is 'what?' I mean, it's basically the same thing, but the manga is nowhere near as emotional.

@@rdarod the manga gave Myne closure and actually meant something. Myne knew her mother in the memory wasn't real and that was the point. In the manga let Myne have one more day with her mother and end it the REAL way she wanted to. In the anime it came across like she didn't realize it was a memory and was trying to talk to a ghost which ended in her not getting any real closure at the end of it.

@@Froward_Thinker But why does Myne realizing that it isn't real and getting closure (that she can't really get, she can't really go back to her world and tell her mother that she's thankful and sorry) make the scene more emotional? Isn't it more emotional that Myne is so overcome with the memory of her mother that she breaks down? She wasn't expecting this trip down memory lane, she wasn't prepared for it, and her memories of her relationship with her mother as she remembers it are reflected in the mind sync, rather than Myne taking perfect control of what she's able to see and manufacturing the perfect goodbye. You get to see so much more of how Myne feels about dying and waking up in another world and how traumatic that would actually be. She died, she doesn't get closure and she'll always be trying to fill the emotional void left behind by her regret. Tbh, the manga scene landed pretty flat for me. Everything she says to her mother is obvious after watching the anime version, but the anime version doesn't have to tell you how Myne feels. It shows you. The manga is better in a lot of other aspects but this scene is probably one of the only scenes the anime did better imo.

@@rdarod no it isn't more emotional. It's more irrational. The emotion comes from the closure which she does get because at the end Myne feels like she said what she needed to say and she released that regret at the end of the experience. She was in a better mental state having gone through the experience. Can we say the same thing for how the Anime handled this scene?

​@@Froward_Thinker Things being wrapped up neatly doesn't enhance the emotion of a scene. Myne 'releasing her regret' isn't sadder or more painful than her demonstrating that she's still got some baggage surrounding her death and her relationship with her mother. Confronting her regret obviously left Myne in a better mental state after her experience. The thing about the kind of regret Myne is carrying is that it doesn't have a resolution. It's sad. She died and left her mother behind. She treated her mother poorly and wasn't grateful to her. A dream sequence where she gets to tell an artificially constructed version of her mother everything she'd been wanting to tell her doesn't change this. The manga demonstrated Myne's determination to move forward, the anime demonstrated her regret. Both approaches are valid, but the anime's version of the scene hit me way harder emotionally, because it was kind of similar to how I'd feel in Myne's position. Season 3 spoilers, but Myne's attachment to her current family as a result of her past life plays a major role in the plot moving forward, and there's a better 'moving forward' scene in season 3 anyway. The anime version of this scene provides a smoother character arc for Myne imo, though I guess it's a matter of opinion at the end of the day.
