An excellent statement. Whilst a great medical doctor, Craig understands ZERO, about the reason why evolution designed the eye as a sophisticated control system. Fair enough. You can not know everything, if your entire life is medical. That is expecting to much of Craig. I say that with respect.
Of course a negative reflective State, is completely preventable, at 20/50, or -1 Diopters, if the Engineering student, will start wearing a plus lens, through the school years. It takes great personal resolve and understanding to do this, both as science, and correctly.
