Quebecois singer-songwriter Myriam Gendron brought her poetic music to the Sycamore Sessions on Friday, September 2, closing out the first day of the Nelsonville Music Festival.
Inspired by literature and poetry, Gendron’s debut album "Not so Deep as a Well" (Mama Bird Recording) came in 2014 after she found a book of poems by famed poet Dorothy Parker. Inspired by the poems, Gendron created music to the words from the poems which made up her first album. Gendron’s sophomore effort came in 2021, titled "Ma délire" (self-released) where she based her songs off of traditional Canadian folk music.
Gendron’s acoustic guitar and soft vocals, set against the trees and string lights, created a magical atmosphere where dozens of families gathered with their children to enjoy her music. Her session begins with “C’est dans les vieux pays" off "Ma délire." There were a number of technical issues throughout Gendron's set, but she soldiered on, gladly re-performing “Go Away from My Window” (also off "Ma délire") with her second performance becoming the second song in her session.
Next, Gendron played Brian Eno's “The Fat Lady of Limbourg,” a track off his 1974 album "Taking Tiger Mountain (By Strategy)" (Island Records) which she also covered for Aquarium Drunkard's Lagniappe Sessions last year. Gendron finished off the night fittingly with her song “Farewell.” Through the issues, Gendron still brought a special performance to the Sycamore Sessions, that closed the night perfectly. - Amy Szmik
