If you like songs that transport you to another time, another age, this is one that will bring you there. This was a great recommendation out of the blue!
The calls that she's making at the beginning of the music it's called kulning. It is used in Scandinavia to call cattle. It is an ancient way of calling them in.
Hello Chris! Cool that you reacted to this one :-) And as I'm Norwegian, you KNOW that I have to say something. First off, the vocalist here is Amalie Bruun. She is Danish, and here she sings in Danish. Amalie is the person behind Myrkur and also the lead singer. This is for sure inspired by old, norse folk songs. "Folkesange" means "folkesanger" in Norwegian and "folk songs" in English :-) "Volkslieder" in German, as you prolly already know, "volk" meaning folk. Funny how the language heritage goes. Danish and Norwegian are roughly 95% the same in the written language, but phonetically Danish is quite different from Norwegian. Fun fact : A friend of mine, Kristoffer Rygg, lead singer in a band called "Ulver", actually produced Myrkur's first full-length album :-) Kristoffer himself is a very good heavy/black metal singer, and IF you're interested. I'll post a link to my personal favorite by them, called "I Troldskog Faren Vild" meaning "Lost In The Forest Of The Trolls". It's almost 30 years old. I'm not a huge fan of black metal, but this one sits within my limits so to speak. Link : ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Sn1aWF43pPI.html Amalie Bruun is quite close to Ane Brun LOL, and ANE is another great, Norwegian female singer, awarded a lot of prizes for her music. And, just to show you that I can recommend more artists than just Angelina (and Susanne Sundfør), I'll take the opportunity to give you a link to a BEAUTIFUL song by a Norwegian band called "Madrugada" with the lead singer Sivert Høyem, one of the most beautiful male voices here in Norway. And in this particular one, they actually collaborated with Ane Brun. It's a beutiful duet with Sivert and Ane, called "Lift Me", and I know for a fact that you will love it. Not kidding :-) 2nd link today coming right up : ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-vfNXrvYuqKY.html Do what you will with the links, they're all yours :-) Take care my friend! Love from Norway.
@@terjetroll920 I know, but I'm not aware of any connections to Norway still. Do you have any information ? But being Danish, she obviously have a weak spot for the Norwegian nature (mountains). Not too strange, as the highest point in Denmark is a mere 557 feet :-))))
@@poolhallshark She used to be a fan of norwegian (and swedish) black and death metal as a youngster, I think. Besides of nordic folk in general. Regarding the feet I hope those don't smell.
The vocals in the beginning is a traditional scandinavian herding call that women would use to signal to their cattle that it was time to come back from the fields.
The first few notes she does is called a "Kulning" which is a traditional Norwegian and Swedish way of calling to their herd of cows etc. Also as a way to communicate through long distances in the mountains and vast plains.
This lady is a pop musician, this is a side project for her. Look up "under the leaves of yggdrasil" and "house carpenter" by her. Also mykur translates to darkness.
Whilst the artist hasn't released further songs from this performance the whole album is on Spotify and is wonderful. I listen to it at least once a week. Great reaction as always:)
The R in the back of the tongue is a weird thing that Danes started doing after years of influence from other Germanic tribes. The R thing became popular all over Denmark and some parts in Sweden and Norway too. We still use this to the modern day.
that sound you think is cool that she does in the beginning is called "kulning" and is a ancient swedish herding call used to call back the cows in the evening from the fields !
Great reaction and breakdown, lots of fantastic viking/norse and black metal music out there to dive into. Love seeing your channel take a small step in that direction!
This reminds me of a video game called Hellblade: Senuas Sacrifice. One of the most imersive games I've played in a very long time. It's about a Norse woman who is cursed. (Plot twist, she has mental health issues and the magic is in her mind)
And the second video I leave a comment on is one of my absolute favorite bands! Myrkur is truly a diamond in the rough of folk/metal, especially in modern day with bands rising and falling at the tip of a hat. Again, I love your energy and your viewpoints on these songs really make your channel awesome. Off to continue watching!!
Thor is Donar in the Netherlands & Germany he has rams. The English have the same gods with a slightly different name. The Germanic languages and still somewhat close, but back in the old times they were just dialect from a common root. Frisian & old English were twins and extremely close to Danish too. Myrkur and Eivør are the two best female Volksingers
Hi. Thank you for reacting to this song. You should visit Norway. Poolhallshark made a great comment, so I dont need to tell you more about Myrkur. But she does have more videos on RU-vid ❤️❤️❤️
Btw, the trill of the r you heard and noticed is normally smoothed out in the spoken language, although it might depend where she's from. It's not normally pronounced in the speech, but rather blends in with the rest of the word or sentence, it's the reason why people say it sounds like we have a potato lodged in our throats.
Ohh Nordic vibes! Looking forward to something new :) Thanks for sharing! Introduced one of my friends to Aurora yesterday, she loved her! Ok, song just kicked in, WHAT A POWERFUL VOICE!!!
That was beautiful. Her voice, the instruments, it really transports you to a different time :) As you said, it's soft. But it's also earth shatteringly powerful
Gonna recommend what I said on Kim, but that's for me. But if you love THIS kind of music, I'll recommend; Mercades Lackey - Battle Dawn. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-CKEqKDvRdo4.html This song always gets me pumped! 😁 -------------------------------------- Previous suggestion; "Hey, wanted to recommend some more Hopsin! Been on a Hopsin binge recently and only just discovered this amazing track! Hopsin - Alone with me ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-LsV2GWlGh-o.html One of my favorite rap tropes, great meaningful lyrics, and amazing cinematography! 🤩 I know you're probably backed up to the moon. But wanted to throw this one on the list 😊 Hope you're having a good week :) Take care!
🤩🇩🇰 🥰 you are the best. soo beautiful her voice is incredible 🙏🏻 and so is my country 💝 wish you could understand the lyrics as well 😅 but then again it isnt even necesary when she sings with so much soul Still waiting for eminem Beautifull pain ft sia And love the way you lie 🙏🏻 And yea yea you are still waiting for me to put some links here 😅🙈😂 lol Have a wonderfull day 🌞💝
A very detailed analysis! And of a great song...maybe it was good that there were no subtitles at this point, so we could focus on the overall feel...completely agree with the storytelling part!
wow I'm so surprised someone would say that because I totally disagree! While I agree she's great on the live version the instruments are so much worse. First off in the original there was a nyckelharpa featured which sounds very distinctive and much more authentically norse, also the strings here are kind of distorted and just a bit off. The whole thing sounds much less pure and mystical, but like a muddled version of the studio version. With the original I think like I'm actually standing on top of the mountain peaks, bellow endless fjords and cold wind howling through the landscape. The live version doesn't translate that to me at all, but everyone obv has very different preferences. Not saying yours is wrong, I'm just surprised because it sounds so much better to me! I'm glad you enjoy it, both are great.
Correct me if i'm wrong folks. But when she said not releasing more songs, I think she was referring to this concert. As it was a ticketed live stream. There apparently are plans to release a DVD (her comments on insta) I watched this live, I'd never really liked her music before, but this folk album is incredible. the harmonies between the 3 of them are amazing.
I came here for your Eminem reactions, but I do also watch most of your other reactions. This is one is extra interesting to me as a Norwegian. I thought this was a Norwegian group at first when I saw the "bunad" on the girl on the album cover. A "bunad" is a traditional folk costume. Mostly used as a festive costume in modern day. The "bunad" on the album cover looks a lot like the one my girlfriend owns. Anyway, I saw that a fellow Norwegian gave a lot of information on the group and vocalist. I like the song, very relaxing!
If you want to go deeper into her music, you should check out her short videos, before she was famous. Like when she plays the Nyckelharpa. That is the true origin of Myrkur and nordic folk.
I think the stick drums are actually little found bones! Anyway, came across your channel because Amalie from Myrkur posted your reaction to the singing intro to her Instagram story:) I'm no expert but this vocalizing intro in this song is Kulning, the old norse way of cow herding (or cow calling)! I highly recommend the entire "Folkesange" album as it is simply one of my favourites. Btw, if I may recommend something, try Yelawolf "You and Me", he's a very interesting and specific rap/country/rock artist. All the best to you.
I gotta say, for this type of music and intonations, I have a difficult time picking up the words used even though I know Faroese and Danish, especially because they're likely using highly fantastical descriptive words which have been entirely forgotten throughout everyday use of the language.
Enjoy watching your reaction videos, thank you! This one makes me wonder what you would think of The Hu - Song of Women feat. Lzzy Hale of Halestorm? Hope you can give that one a listen and reaction.
Can you please listen to dear Anxiety by Clayton Jennings It’s a great song with a really great message And you said you like story telling this one has a great story as well
You should react to "Jon Henrik - Daniels Jojk" from Sweden's got talent. Jojk is a type of song where you sing without words, very similar to the video above. The song "Daniels Jojk" is about Jon Henriks childhood friend who had recently passed and you can feel the chills all throughout the body. Anyways, hope you'll react to it. I know you will find it powerful :)
Amalie Bruun the tone of her voice is beautiful. Had to thesaurus what this brought to mind and the closest is evocative. However, while the language she is singing is lovely, Black Metal Music is not. I like to give your choices a chance because they often introduce the offbeat, unusual which otherwise would never cross my radar. So, thank you. Your reactions are a breath of fresh air, truly enjoyable. Comments on the instruments, spot on.
