Mastering Composition is no easy feat, but Myron Barnstone has done an excellent job of sharing the design techniques used by master painters, and making it understandable so others can employ it into their art. Please enjoy this amazing interview with Myron describing his artistic journey, providing guidance, and telling humorous anecdotes.
The interview was conducted by Tavis Leaf Glover, a student of Barnstone, and educator/author of Canon of Design. For more information please visit their sites below. Huge thanks to Myron and Cat for inviting us all into their lives!

I recently discovered Mr Branstone on RU-vid, and have been devouring the lessons, one by one. He is the rare teacher who sets out the rules of how his class works, and he had every right to do that. These videos show him to be a genius at parsing and imparting what we came to him for: how to draw. He guides us to see better,, to look deeper, to think. It's not for us to judge him or his art, or to prounounce any of it as good or bad. It is his art, and should be looked at as an extension of a brilliant man who's very presence oozed intelligence. I had no idea that he had passed away, and had been contemplating taking a class with him. Thank goodness the family and partners published his teaching and his art on RU-vid. He is still teaching us, prodding us to think, and I, for one of hundreds, am grateful to have learned from him.

I'm so incredibly thankful for the recorded lessons he left behind! I regret I didn't discover the man before he passed away. He's changed my life from beyond the grave. R.I.P.

just stumbled upon a video of Branstone on golden section and then started to see one by one all the videos and have never come across any lesson that kept me captivated all day. Huge respect for this man. My only dream now is to be in his class. May he live a very long and healthy life for my dream to come true. Although I am a graphic designer from Pakistan but this was a great learning experience. I think his art course should be made free for public as it would serve the great art cause.(just a thought)

Thanks for the comment! He was a great mentor and artist. He passed away late 2016 unfortunately. www.ipoxstudios.com/rest-in-peace-myron-barnstone/ It was a huge loss to the art community. The best place to learn more of his teachings is from his excellent dvd series.

What an amazing artist and teacher (and with a great sense of humour). I have studied 8 years of art, and what he teaches no one taught me. Why? I have the theory that there are two groups of teachers: those who don't know and they who know but won't teach you (artistic egocentrism). Myron showed me that there was a third group, led by him of those who know and share knowledge and passion. I wish I could have told to Myron in person, a deep sincere "thank you".

Delightful teacher. I’m no artist, but I’m so intrigued about understanding how they perceive and create. So far I’ve seen snippets on RU-vid, but I intend to get my daughter excited enough to justify purchasing them, then I’ll ride the her coattails!

How lucky you are to have known such a man! I had not heard of Myron Barnstone until I came across his name, or his passing, I guess it was, on your site. What an intelligent, considerate and well-traveled person! I plan on looking more into what he taught. I am unable to join your Master Class, at this time, but, I will certainly keep seeking that which I do not know. Namaste!

That's the exact feeling I got from The Painter's Secret Geometry. But after reading 2/3rds of the book I became convinced, however, that he wasn't discovering any secret technique but instead randomly finding patterns on paintings, just like those people who find hidden words on the Bible that predict historic events... is pure statistics, you throw increasingly complex patterns over a painting and at some point there will be parts of the painting that "closely match" some parts of those patterns. From seeing Barnstone's class, however, that feeling went partially away. I wish there were more books similar to his classes, the exercises on his class became hard for me to do without more guidance.

Cuenta de RU-vid thanks for the comment, I appreciate it! I felt the same way at first until I analyzed over 100 photos/paintings. If you are looking for more content, please check out my site. I have a blog with over 400 articles dedicated to composition. Plus videos and a book I sell on there. Best of luck with your art :)

I love him even more for calling bs on Jackson Pollock's 'art'. I mean, to each his own and no offense to Pollock fans, but I am glad that there is someone like Mr. Myron Barnstone who does not care about that kind of work.

With the utmost respect it is a shame Myron Barnstone had no understanding or education in materiality - had he been exposed to that higher school of education in the field of “materiality” he would have recognised Pollocks historically transformational singularity for western art whose mastery in form, structure and expression lay imbedded in the discipline of “Horizontality”...yes ... a damned shame. Much respect to the man ... R.I.P. Myron Barnstone.
