Heh. It’s kind of interesting looking at them from that context, it seems like with the Riven sound they were trying to make a more “realistic” sound now that they had a bigger budget. Then for the subsequent games they slowly mixed elements of the old sound back in before giving up and doing an HD remake of the first sound for the Plasma engine games (I believe realMyst, URU, and Myst V use the same sound due to being on the same engine, realMyst’s is just more compressed due to the tech limitations at the time it came out).
@@Nathan-kk6lb Myst III and IV were done by different studios, so it wasn't Rand and Robyn making the sounds, so I guess they tried to make something better each time, and when it came back to Cyan for Uru and Myst V they came back to the good old sound
How?! That sound was never scary at all to me when I was a kid and is still not scary to me now. Nope, the only sound in Myst that was scary to me was the "Un-finale" song heard during the bad endings. In fact, I love the linking sound!
I just bought a box full of LaserX sets and this is the first thing that crossed my mind when I turned one on. It made the hair on back of my neck stand up. I spent many hours playing Myst on Atari Jaguar back in the day and thought I was being sucked in myself. Any Laser X set makes this sound when you turn it on check it out for some goosebumps lol.
Robyn or someone at cyan has to have some notes left behind denoting what kind of instruments were used...I've tried replicating the link sound on my MPS...but still need more info...
