Mysterious Noise in the Depths: or How Bananas Almost Sank USS Cod!

There is a reason why everyone serving aboard submarines needs to be qualified as soon as possible and we present a great object lesson in how a non-qualified cook "endangered" USS Cod before she even reached the war zone. Okay, maybe that is a bit hyperbolic, how about how the non-qualified cook endangered everyone's waistline? Amid the seriousness of war, strange and hilarious events are important to remember. This is the story of the mysterious cacophony on cod.

Paul, thank you for not letting the tales of the Cod die. You are serving a very important part of history.

Thought an officer with an NCO was in charge of storage? Probably the last fresh fruit they seen for the rest of the war
@USSCod
@USSCod Год назад
They had fresh fruit and veggies each patrol! But they lasted only a few weeks at best. George was given the task of stowing the stalks of bananas as a last minute job. Also I will be that your experience is post war... where an officer and NCO are required for most things. Did you know that there are more Admirals and Generals today in the military than there were in WWII ! And in WWII we had 15 million men in uniform. Today its less than 2 million!

What a wonderful story! Thanks! When RCA was building their first color TV camera, in the late 1940s, they used a nice bowel of fruit as a test subject. It had apples, pears, oranges, plums and bananas. Development of the camera was going beautifully until one night a wise guy painted the bananas blue! The engineers nearly went mad trouble shooting the color processors trying to find the cause of the fault in the TV picture. It took several days for one of them to finally glance at the bowel of fruit and see the joke! Very few were laughing then. So, in summary, bananas are dangerous!

Interesting that it does not have a cover over it, given food gets stashed everywhere on a sub. I guess everyone knowing that that is a moving part solves the issue

I’ve heard that bananas stored with other fruits and vegetables will make them go bad faster and that’s where the bad luck reputation comes from.

Very interesting! The submarine Becuna does not have the power option for controlling hte planes so those wheels had to be used. And there were no benches for the operators to sit on when manning them.
@paulfarace9595
@paulfarace9595 Год назад
I'll bet the wheels are linked to power systems so they have a clutch to shift from power to manual. And somebody probably stole the benches before they opened Becuna as a memorial ship...😢😂 Gotta sit down and the boxes are vital extra storage. ❤
@robertporterfield2023
@robertporterfield2023 Год назад
The Becuna and many other boats, such as Carp (my qual boat) had a hydraulic system that had three modes of operation -- Normal, Emergency, and Hand. The large wheels were used in two of the modes. When in the normal mode the wheel operated a hydraulic pump that positioned a spool valve in the torpedo room. The spool valve routed fluid from a motor driven hydraulic pump to the plane's operating ram. In emergency mode the large wheel was not used. Instead, a small wheel operated a spool valve that routed hydraulic fluid directly from the boat's main hydraulic plant to the plane's operating ram. In hand mode the wheel and the attached hydraulic pump was sent directly to the plane's operating ram in the torpedo room. Putting the planes in hand was an excellent way to train a planesman since he quickly learned to use a minimum of planes to control the boat. Once again, a great presentation!

In a television program called "The Silent Service", the USS Cod temporarily "lost" a boarding party searching for contraband off the port of Singapore (link below). I'm curious about the story. If you have any information, I'd love to hear it. I grew up in Cleveland and visited the Cod twice: once through YMCA Indian Guides, and once through Boy Scouts. Thank you for maintaining this historical record. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-mobbs8cyXNo.html
