What is this mystery 35mm colour negative film? I found it in Bic Camera for $28 USD. I loaded it up in my Minolta TC-1 and had a great time in Akihabara and Shibamata in Tokyo.
Here are some clues:
- Escura Showa Camera Film
- 24+6 exposures
- C41 processing
- ISO400
- No DX code
- No country of origin details
Did you guess it before I did the reveal?

I wonder if it's the new or old formula for Metropolis. Looks like a wonderful trip to Japan.

Yes I wondered that too NP! The colours look a bit more saturated than when I last shot it.

Metropolis !!! That was coming to my mind immediately when seeing those bluish tones, strong contrasts and desaturated colors. I had this Showa film in my hands many times, but was not sure if I should give it a try. So, thanks for testing it. It’s not my liking, I guess … or I do not have the suitable subjects for it in my mind yet. It might work with some portraits in a more rough city environment with graffiti walls and stuff … but Tokyo ? 🤔

Film looks like good, and slightly retro colours to add to the mix. Nice to see that they didn’t come out \overly saturated. Not jealous your in Japan, I’m not. No I am not, I’m not, I’m not. (OK, slightly jealous.)

I was thinking it might've been something like metropolis when you posted the pics. It has the same desaturated look you get from metropolis. I think it does urban shots really well and you're in the right place to get them!. That's a trip I'd like to make myself, some day. Go over to Japan. I have some friends there as well, so I'd drop in and see them😊 It'd also give me plenty of practice to try out my Japanese! Which, BTW, is pretty rusty at the moment😝

Looks like you had a great trip Matt... loved the compositions and locations where you went to shoot these. IMO for the steep price of $28 USD this stock looks quite underwhelming, but you took a chance and had fun with it, which is what film is about sometimes. It's fun to take a gamble in a new place. Not everything has to be serious work all the time. Having said that, after the Fuji news and what looks to be the final years of them producing multiple color negative/slide film stocks, I can't help but see this as the future for color film photography in the next 5-10 years. Random (old?) color film stocks repacked and branded by random 3rd parties and priced at outrageous Kodak/Fuji levels, yet fail to deliver the desired results at that price point. Outside of Kodak and people like Cinestill who are repackaging the cine stocks, the future for color film photography looks depressingly bleak. Sorry to be a Negative Nancy here lol
@MattLovesCameras
@MattLovesCameras Год назад
Thanks Nathan, yes $28USD is super expensive, but it was worth it for the fun and the surprise. I also took some photos on my Contax T3 with Lomo 400 at this location. Sadly no Fujifilm stocks of colour negative anywhere, only B&W and slide film. Hopefully Kodak will start pumping out lots more stock over the next 12 months or so! I have another 10 or so Japan videos coming so I'd love it if you subscribe! Cheers Matt

Blocked highlights, plugged shadows, cyan color balance and low saturation? Count me out. But wait, are we looking at results scanned from machine prints? Custom scans? Machine scans with no human offsets? Any of those could be the reason this stuff looks so odd. I'd want to get the film developed in a known-in-control C-41 process, then "camera scan" the results myself and feed raw files through Negative Lab Pro and Lightroom Classic to see what could be pulled from the files.
@MattLovesCameras
@MattLovesCameras Год назад
Hi William, thanks for your comment. Film was scanned by the best lab in Australia, Ikigai film lab! They are renowned for their scans. The film is quite desaturated and grainy, the whole point of the video was that it was a mystery film. More Japan videos coming soon shot on Adox Color Mission / Kodak ColorPlus / superia 400 / Lomo 400 / Lomo 800 and superia 1600!

Hi Gab! According to my lab, yes it was. The first and only time I shot Metropolis I didn't like it, but I think this must be a slightly different formula?

I enjoyed your video but I was not impressed by the "subdued" results from that film. I lived in Tokyo (2001-06) and film was still king in those days. My favorite was Konica, followed by Fuji and both were plentiful at very reasonable cost. I still have all my old film cameras but they are now in a display cabinet and I shoot with a Fujifilm X camera using a number of film simulations.
@MattLovesCameras
@MattLovesCameras Год назад
Hi Peter! Oh that's so cool, I was thinking that I would love to live there even for just a month. I loved it so much I'm planning to return later this year if I can get the money together. Wish I'd shot some Konica - I have one roll in the fridge but it's well past expiry date so no idea what it's like. Yes I can't say that I will rush out and buy a lot more of this film... but I did enjoy seeing the results and the surprise of finding out what it was. My go-to films over the last few years have been Kodak Gold 200, then for a couple of years it was Pro Image and Fujifilm C200, over the last 12 months it's been Kodak Color Plus, CineStill 400D, Fuji Superia 400 and Adox Color Mission. Make sure you subscrie to my channel as I have another 10 or so Japan videos coming! Half of them will be film and the rest will be digital (Fujifilm X series and Ricoh GR III). Cheers Matt
