I'm a Cherokee Indian and I met Wes Studi a few times at an annual powwow in Tahlequah Oklahoma. At our last meeting he told me about a superhero movie he was working on and thought kids my age (13) would really like it. When I found out it was this movie, I automatically loved it

This movie was great... and probably several years too early. I feel like it was a combination of the studio not knowing what type of movie it was which led to them marketing it as a traditional comic book movie instead of what it actually was and then the audiences not buying into those trailers and other marketing methods... and all that led to a low box-office gross. I think it's a cult classic but one that's been forgotten by most except by the few that saw it.

Comic book movies werent big enough for a comedy like this to make waves. The homage/parody aspects rely heavily on knowledge of the genre, which was known to the mainstream as something only interesting to nerds and children. Literally only the biggest few comic names ever made it mainstream, like batman/superman/spiderman, even well into the early 2000s, to where non comic fans would go watch them.
@sargentocapitao9668
@sargentocapitao9668 3 года назад
@@Xanderj89 Its not that I disagree but I'd add X-Men to the list of superheroes with an established name by the early 2000s, and yes it was just about the early 90s that that happened so I get why you wouldnt mention it some might add Blade into the mix but I wouldnt because he was never perceived as a comicbook superhero by main audiences

Another hero film you may like is Frank Miller's 2008 "The Spirit" which is a different kind of hero film with similar visuals to the "Sin City" films. Critics seemed unfamiliar with the source material, they didn't get the tongue-in-cheek nature of Will Eisner's characters. Samuel L. Jackson plays the villain, The Octopus. Scarlett Johansson is his cohort. And of course there's the 1984 "The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension" starring Peter Weller ("Robocop") with Ellen Barkin, Jeff Goldblum, John Lithgow and Christopher Lloyd. I watch it once a year.

Congratulations on 20k subscribers - fully deserved! And welcome back, you two! It's great to see you again (even if it IS in some sort of surreal mirror dimension!) 😁 I hope you keep on healing, Matthew, and Emily, you make a great Cinema Sherpa! As for the movie itself, I agree that if it was released now, it'd probably stand a much better chance of finding its audience. Perhaps if it had been released in, say '96, it might've been something of a hit, or even in the mid 2000s, but in 1999 the superhero genre was in the doldrums thanks to "Batman & Robin" so there wasn't really an audience to sustain a parody. That year also had a lot of big movies in it too, so the competition was intense... but at least it gets love now! That's probably precious little consolation to the people who lost their jobs after greenlighting the project, though!

My buddies and I saw it in the theater, too. I've owned copies of the movie in various formats ever since. Definitely worth adding to any super hero fan's collection. =)

Saw this in the theater with friends. Every time Mr. Furious was on screen my friends looked at me and giggled.

"The Great Value of heroes" is giving them too much credit. They're the "Dollar Tree Heroes".

Not a personal favorite comedy of mine, but I can still give this movie props. It has some amazing one liners and some of the over the top slapstick is great fun. And all the people look like they were having an absolute ball making it.

I feel like this movie was still living in the shadow of the bomb of Batman & Robin (1997). It really destroyed superhero movies for a long time.

"When he tapped on his symbol it sounded hollow... because he's a hollow hero." It took me several years before I realized that Captain Amazing's superpower is his sponsorships. When he loses his sponsors, he loses his powers.

Love this film. It was genius and probably ahead of its time. Glad to see it get some love. And great to hear you're doing a bit better. Oh, and Michael Bay used to direct commercials, as well, with his most famous one probably being the Got Milk? Aaron Burr commercial. And this film's director also directed commercials for that campaign, as you mention. They may have known each in some other way but I'm guessing they definitely knew each other because of that and probably threw Bay in the film for shit's and giggles.

For movies with a weird mixed-timeline settings, my go to will always be "Streets of Fire" (1984) directed by Walter Hill starring Michael Pare, Diane Lane, and others. Billed as "A Rock and Roll Fable" the setting seems to mix up aesthetics and sensibilities from the 1940s, 1950s, and 1980s. As an added bonus, the soundtrack absolutely kicks ass (IMHO.) I heartily recommend Streets of Fire if either of you haven't seen it yet. (Edited for typo)

Now that is a true cult classic. Very offbeat but somehow very watchable and has an amazing soundtrack to boot. Would love to see a reaction to that too.

I remember loving this movie as a kid, then it "didn't age well" and people maybe thought the humor was too low brow, but after over a decade of MCU and DCEU this movie aged to perfection
