@@buchiklop110 Maybe next time he reviews a MST3K comic, he'll do it. We know you read comments, Lewis. So if you see this, this is an opportunity too great to pass up.
Fun fact about the new one: the first season didn't actually have them riffing in the same room for the most part, a lot of it was ADR'd after the fact, which is why (for my money) The Gauntlet has better pacing and riffing, they were doing them all together in the same room. And whatever you think about the new seasons, love them or hate them or somewhere in between, Joel has run some of the most honest and transparent crowdfunding I've EVER seen. Constant updates showing EXACTLY where the funding/money goes and why exponential growth is not only possible, but inevitable (the first Kickstarter answered the question of "why does X amount only equal 3 episodes, but Y amount equals 6?" by showing how much it was going to cost to build sets and pay for writers/workers VS how much it costs to KEEP those people on once everything is in place). Considering how many Kickstarters seem to think they can just put out some vague, overly optimistic goals and then just go radio silent for years (or indefinitely in some cases), Joel's total commitment to showing people just WHERE the money they pledge is going is not only admirable: it's incredibly smart! (Also #NotSponsored, just a fan...of MST and Linkara's channel)
My girlfriend and I had our first date take place in 2019 when she got us tickets to see MST3K live with Joel returning. The only reason I haven’t put a ring on it yet is because I can’t afford it, but believe me, she is a keeper.
Rings are overrated. My spouse and I made an engagement Build a Bear together. I dropped by the store earlier and asked for a heart so I could propose with it. It was adorable.
I personally love both Mike and Joel as hosts. They bring different personalities, comedic talents to the skits and riffing, and relationships between them and the robots (Joel acting like a father and Mike acting like the fun yet sensible older brother) but when they nail the jokes, they really nail them.
Ah, nice. I thought I was the only conscientious objector in The Great Host Wars. I tend to default to Hodgson's declaration that, "We're both just doughy Midwest guys." :D
@@nonspiderweb Its really hard for me to watch the Jonah seasons. The "lets see how many riff's per minute we can get the meter up to" pacing just throws me off. I keep wanting to yell "You don't have to talk over the ENTIRE movie!". As for Joel and Mike - I was watching the episodes on CC and SCI-FI and nearly hated Mike and wished they'd brought Joel back, but once I started getting the episodes and rewatching them (I have all the seasons including the KTMA era) I have to say Mike grew on me and now I prefer him over Joel.
...I'm just trying to wrap my mind around how meta it is to use MST3K clips in reaction to an MST3K comic. I keep expecting Phelous to pop out at any moment.
Yeah, personally really loved the revival era; I kind of liked the faster pace, but the host segments and characters were a blast. Of course, it's the interation that introduced me to the show, so I'm a bit biased. Each version and host have its advantages and something for everyone
Assholes that make Linkara look similar to that one critic we don't talk about anymore...or stuff linkara did like over 10 years ago that people refuse to let go off
My favorite song from the show: 🎶This is the song starting off our blackout Our favorite fugitive alien song! DON'T TRY TO KILL US WITH FORKLIFT! It won't take very long Relax and sing along... This is the song, written for the train chase This is the chase, Rocky and Ken! He tried to kill me with a forklift, ole!🎶
Growler was a tribute to Rowlf, the piano playing Muppet. Rolf was Jim Henson's first successful Muppet, going all the way back to the Jimmy Dean show on the early 60s.
A machine that can send you into any comic? You can finally use that to get sweet revenge on Christabella, Al Lucy Mickey and Jack, Rebirth Booster Gold, Superboy Prime and of course The Fixer! But I suspect you'll just use it to beat Big Dix.
I really appreciate the background info and trivia about the show's history as well as the fact you're covering the comic. I've always liked MST3K, but I feel that your show really gave me an appreciation for it because of the riff clips you use for your reviews. Super excited for next week's episode, BTW! "This isn't a mud hole, kid! This is an operating table! And I'm the surgeon!" "Well then I feel you should've been sued for malpractice by this point, Bruce..."
22:06 - 22:10 Wayne would later be found beaten up in a nearby alley with a note saying: "Koyaanisqatsi is a FUKING masterpiece and will be respected as such. - The Mistress" Who this could be is still ongoing.
You actually introduced me to MST3K. Thanks to you I've watched the two seasons of the Netflix revival and loved it. Thanks for helping to create a fan.
26:17 This is off-topic (not a reference, I assure you), but around St. Patrick’s Day, Ryan Reynolds sat down and watched Green Lantern (he admitted he never actually saw it when it came out, you can debate whether or not he was serious), and when he finished, he actually thought the film was okay! Sorry, just wanted to say that.
The reason a good chunk of people don't know MST3K comes from the fact that this show was barely brought outside of the US. For example, we never got it in Germany, instead we got our own version called "SchleFaz" about 6-7 years ago which is still running and tackles waaaay different movies for the most part. Of course SchleFaz tackled stuff like Samurai cop, but we also got stuff like Hentai Kamen for example. Also our version is way more low key. We don't have any major set-up, it's just 2 famous comedians/actors making fun of it like modern Internet reviewers in a living-room while doing tiny skits about the movie inbetween add-breaks and the like. And instead of talking over the movies they actually blip in some word-boxes/baloons with their witty remarks or running gags.
Again, that's probably due to rights issues as much as anything else. They had trouble with video releases of some episodes as well. The RiffTrax crew wanted to release riffs with the movies, but it was never going to be affordable, if they'd been allowed at all. They also toyed with the idea of creating a player that could play the riff and movie in sync.
They did dramatically improve the riffing speed in Season 12, one of the true shames, that they were cancelled right as they had started getting an overall writing and riffing rhythm down
@@maneoj46 I watched the half-Season 12 episodes at a rate of two per night. I'm just not made to absorb more of any new thing than that at any one time. I end up being unable to remember what the blazes I just watched. :o
I don't think the problem was ever density of riffs, per se, but rather segues between them. The similarity between the three actor's voices... just the literal tone and timbre of their actual voices... was a big stumbling block, because it's hard to legit know when a riff is over and when the next begins. As they got more comfortable with their personas (and especially as Baron Vaughn started to ABSOLUTELY NAIL Tom Servo) it helped a lot, because they all started just talking differently from one another. (this is one reason I'm disappointed Emily isn't the upcoming host)
One other problem also is that Netflix from what I've heard doesn't have ads, so figuring out where to do the skits needs a different formula. I don't have Netflix but all except one episode (the 11 finale I think) aired on IFC and where the skits happen isn't always as natural feeling as they were on the previous versions. Sometimes the skit happens and where it would go to ad break just went back to the show. They added in a bit where Max makes some comment about the movie followed by "You're watching MST3K, Moon 13, the Moon" with the boneheads playing a sort of jazzy background tune for the actual commercial breaks.
@@JC-fg2jz While I disagree that the riff-density was a non-issue (Seriously, the riffs in REPTILICUS come on so fast that it's almost excruciating), I agree that the biggest issue was that the voices were WAY too similar for the longest time. Also, I too am a touch disappointed that Emily isn't the new host. Glad it's not just me.
Last February I went to watch Jonah do some stand-up comedy, and he actually played and sang the "Every Country has a Monster" song during his routine. It was so cool.
13 minutes in and I forgot this was just an intro for a comic. I was oddly content just thinking that this was a half an hour episode talking about what you liked about the show
The idea of making the beginning of these reviews so the theme song & title card can be placed at the front (or even be moved to after the intro) could come in handy, especially for episodes that cover each individual issue of a series or even the retrospectives. It could work as a smoother way to put compilation episodes together in longer videos & remove that "Jump cut" feel going straight from one episode to another in some of those videos.
I have nothing but respect for the Joel era, without it we'd have nothing, But I just thought the Mike era was funnier, I probably rank it Mike, Jonah, Joel, but that is in no way a diss towards Joel.
@@wolfmantheimpaler It often has that feeling of, "We know we're goin' down so let's just throw EVERYTHING at the wall and see what sticks!" Sometimes this works, and sometimes not. FTR: I love *Hamlet* , which I understand only about 9 other fans do.
1:43-13:23 That is one of the best explanations about the show I have ever heard. I will admit I was very unfamiliar with this show before this video. I was aware of MST3K, I just never watched it. I decided to go find some of the Mike Nelson episodes and so far I am really enjoying it. I especially love Tom Servo. I also love that his voice actor played a role in the recent Tex Murphy game. Thank you Linkara for giving me a proper introduction to this show.
Example: from "The Amazing Colossal Man" Glenn:"I don't want to grow anymore." Joel:"I'm a Toys 'R' Us kid." Glenn:"I DON'T WANT TO GROW ANYMORE!" Joel:"I'M A TOYS 'R' US KID!"
The striped shirt was a big part of French fashion for a long time, and I'm sure I've seen it combined with a little ascot or neckerchief on more than one occasion. The guy really does look like an old movie's stereotypical French artist - or maybe an off-color street mime.
They’re called Breton shirts and they relate to the navy. The Russian military also uses them though so I can only assume the unique association with France comes from Anglo focus on France. Honestly a red striped shirt like that would give me more of a quebecois lumberjack vibe.
I am sorely disappointed you didn’t switch the credits music for the one in the show. Would have been a perfect bookend for that ‘turn down the lights’ intro.
I only knew what MST3 was 'cause of reviewers like you, my country never got the show (at least not in the past) so i never got into it, and i still can't get into it. But i'm beyond grateful for what it inspired and still inspires, even if it isn't for me, so i hope the fans get more of it!
The Totinos Pizza Rolls thing is likely a larger joke towards how Totinos was doing sponsorship deals with EVERYBODY back in the day, most notably Sonic The Hedgehog back in 2016.
I've mentioned this review twice on the Kickstarter in the comment section. I almost wonder if maybe that's how they heard about it... but who knows. Let's get the Kickstarter to 5.5 Million! Or even better, lets beat Critical Role so Joel can get the belt back from them!
"With that intro out of the way" Little over a third of the way through the video by that point. Not that I'm complaining I loved the History of MST3K segment.
As someone who has watched your show for years and seeing you use MST3K clips all the time, this was a treat. It was nice to finally learn about the thing that influenced you so much. I'm not much of a fan of MST3K, but I do appreciate the legacy it created. Thank you Linkara, see you next week.
AT4W was one way that I rediscovered MST3K (I had seen a couple episodes before but they only exist in vague memories) and this last week, I became a backer for the second kickstarter so thanks Linkara for introducing me to my favorite TV Show ever made.
Man, including every reoccuring MST3K gag really stretched out the credits of the show. Also makes a convenient key for which episodes to look for to see them in their original context.
14:30 I did not expect a reference to the Tick, but I sure won't complain about it. Also, it makes me wanna see a review of any of the Tick comics. Also also, given your love for MST3K, much like Thanos, it was inevitable that you would review this MST3K comic.
The artist who drew the scenes on the satellite is Todd Nauck (probably best known for his work on the original run of Young Justice) and I know he must have been thrilled to get this assignment because he's an MST3K superfan! He's also a big Power Rangers fan and (if I remember right) half the reason that Liefeld's studio put out those Power Rangers Zeo comics back in the day was because Liefeld knew how much Nauck loved that show and got the license for him to work on it. This man keeps getting to work on all his favourite tv franchises
Loved the video, but honestly, the intro itself was something I enjoyed the most. It's always a blast hearing people talk about the things that inspire them and how they influence the work they do.
16:20 -- Why, I can go inside ASTRO CITY, declare that I've waited long enough, and demand to know what N-Forcer's deal is (among many other questions about backstories that have been hinted at).
16:52 Surprised we didn't get a "Too much Pink Energy is dangerous" clip to go with the bubbles. Also, are the Totino Pizza Rolls supposed to be a joke about the Hostess Fruit Pie ads? Because if so, it really fell flat.
@@AT4W I came up with these silly names some months ago when being in my bedroom. Linkara good sir you have long been one of my favourite content creators and seeing you talk so directly about your love of MST3K is a magical moment. Thank you. Keep on doing what you do 😁
@@ikarikid I’m more saying that the answer would be in the credits. They would discern what they do and do not recognize, and then by process of elimination know where the clips come from, even if they know nothing about the source beyond the title
@@DigiRangerScott yes, but then the question becomes “what is a MST3K?” Also, because it’s not as popular, it’s actually harder to access. Sure, stuff has appeared on RU-vid, but it’s RU-vid, links are fleeting and there are other rights issues. Also, I did see some older stuff on Netflix but that’s not visible in Australia anymore.
I've asked that question, and its mostly a case of "MST3K never broadcasted here". Together with a lot of other things in the credits so any random thing could belong to any other random thing in the show as far as I'm aware. Credits unfortunately don't help when there is nothing specifically connecting the credit and the clip in the show.
Ok, so let’s say that Lewis used clips of Colin Baker as the Doctor. Are you going to be able to recognise the episodes he and his coat appear in? (Except Real Time, because that was animated and he wears a blue coat in that)
Yeah, can’t clean Teenage Super Foxes. Those you need to burn to clean them. Tear comics brick by brick? Editorial Mandates! Ok, win for the references of comics there!
It's thanks to you that I got into MST3K. Before that, the only people who I had heard bring it up I had a very low opinion of, so in turn, I had a low opinion of the show. But, when I started watching you in the early 2010's, I figured I'd give it a chance after seeing the clips from it that were on AT4W. And now I've spent over $300 on Rifftrax (shorts and vods, since I don't really have the free time to sit down and worry about syncing) and I've added a bunch of MST3K episodes to my list of things to watch during the Halloween season.
I feel the mst3k format is actually getting revived again on RU-vid, with a few channels (Razzle, Cosmonaut Variety Hour) getting popular at least partially f it. Especially since stuff like discord has made it easier to organize a group riff.
I’d wonder if this kind of format could work in a wandavison type story, someone retreating into an older comics to cope with trauma, someone get Alan Moore on this!
@@alexandredesbiens-brassard9109 that’s a fair, point, and I wouldn’t want such a story to go that direction, And yeah there plenty of writers who fit the idea as well.
@@edwardscales5503 Given the state of the Big Two these days, the "trauma" could simply be what modern comics are like. I'd rather live in the Silver Age myself than read most of what's coming out from DC and Marvel these days. Hmmm. The "someone" doing the retreating could be an internet content creator who's done one too many Patreon request videos about terrible comics, couldn't it? :)
I didn't grow up with MST3K like you young Americans did. My interest in the show was first laid when I watched the movie on Showtime many moons ago. Hell, we didn't even get the Sci Fi network in Australia until about 2006. And even then, I only watched it for it's paltry run of anime shows, quality notwithstanding. But it was through RU-vid watching bootleg videos on this platform that finally peaked my interest and that interest has stayed with me in the years since.
From what I understand, the reasons why Netflix love to cancel the shows after two seasons… is because of money. Not because the show will lose viewers, but because after two seasons it’s generally around this time frame when crew and the showrunners get their pay raises. To prevent that, they often cancel the show after two seasons, unless it is something cheaper like an animated show, or if it’s something they’re constantly brings in new subscribers. That’s why the dark crystal mini series was cancelled only after one season: when it won it’s Emmy, the pay raise they would’ve gotten would’ve been massive and Netflix didn’t wanna give them the increased amount of money, and it’s why they cancelled MST3K on netflix: They didn’t want to pay them extra money.
One of the things I liked about the host sections was how each host seemed to bring something different to the roll and their situation on the SOL. Joel was accepting, just letting it all happen and typically not being that proactive.only loosing his cool in specific circumstances. Mike was more frustrated, looking for ways to get out of the situation and more vocal about disliking the films, and Jonah felt like a mix of the two, while he was more accepting of the situation like Joel, he was more proactive like Mike, but rather then just trying to get off the satellite (ignoring the Gauntlet for a moment) he was focused on making improvements, upgrading the bots, building new ones and trying to make the overall experience more enjoyable.
I'd like to point out that the second revival season definitely slowed the pace down, and cut back on the references to the classic show and pop culture. These were complaints I didn't get or agree with at the time, but Joel and friends listened and worked that feedback into the next season. And it didn't hurt. It's just cool that the fans directly impact the style, tone and writing of the show. That's freaking rare, mst3k is such a treasure.
Was introduced to MST3k through this show from an earlier episode, I googled msT3k (not knowing what that meant) and now I have nearly a hundred dvds of this show lol. Thank you.
