I collect and repair antique purses. All beaded, loomed, crocheted, embroidered, leather and metal ones. I am also a Bead artist. When you have a bead on your string that is mis-shapened all you need to do is take a pair of pliers and smash the bead, that breaks off and you keep crocheting. Also, they would have used silk purse twist, which acts very different from cotton crochet thread. Your difficulties are more often due to the cotton thread. You made a very nice finished product. And for those that think this would never work in modern day, you are right. There was not a need to carry ID, large car key fobs, pen & paper, cell phones or even a large amount of money or credit cards. So a small purse is perfect. now a project bag is a different animal and does need to be larger. There were also shopping bags (think our reusable shopping bags) that were often crocheted or fabric in construction.

You might have forgotten, in the UK what we call a purse is for holding money and generally kept in a handbag (what you call a purse). You did a great job with the pattern and so much more patient than me with beadwork. I tried it once, and I had the beads on the coffee table, the dog wagged her tail at the door knocking, three months later I'm still finding beads 😅😅😅

Very pretty "little" long bag. Can I recommend you going to Elena Rugel Crochet. She does a lot of bead work in her patterns and you can watch her to see how to make that 1st wrap with the bead like it said to in the pattern. I think it will make more sense to you after you watch her for just a few minutes. There's nothing "wrong" with what you did and you made it work "Corrinna style" but it might not work well for you in another project doing it the way you did. I'm not griping at you!!! You are amazing and I love ya like a little crochet daughter. I hope you have "known me" long enough to know that but wanted to make it clear for anyone else reading this, too. ❤️🧶😅

My husband's mother used to spend the 1st day 'beading' her tiny black silk crochet thread. They didn't even start the pattern until they had a 5 gallon bucket full. She made some of the most beautiful jewelry ever worn. I never had the chance for her to show me. And she made bead bags as well. Thanks for sharing. A lot of the older patterns were written with the assumption that everyone knew how to crochet. My grandmother put my 1st hook in my hand when I was 5 years old. I made a scarf😮 and yes I still have the needle. Good old Susan Bates!

Gorgeous purse. Just a tip from a beader, if I needed to break a bead, I would get a push pin (from the noticeboard) and an eraser. You put the eraser under your work and gently push the pin into the bead and the eraser at the same time. This saves your thread from breaking.

Usually to add more beads you cut the thread (end of the row/round is easiest) add beads to new thread and start your next row/round, just like if you were changing colors or starting a new ball of yarn

Love it!!!! I especially liked that the pattern used beading with double crochet stitches. The patterns I've used and seen have used single crochets. One problem with the coin purse, especially if left unlined, is that coins and bills are shockingly dirty (actual physical dirt, oils, etc.). So you either have to wash the purse (hand wash, use detergent), or launder the money (ha!).

I'm both a crocheter and a bead weaver. Now, I've never done beaded crochet, I make beadwork jewelry. One thing about those seed beads (that's what they are called, in case you didn't know), most of them are made of glass. It's not difficult to break those beads if you need to. Also, if you have a jewelers phillip's head screwdriver, it's possible to break those beads apart without breaking the actual beads. It's the gold coating on them that has 'glued' them together... inserting a tiny screwdriver in between the two, and pressing gently, should separate them. I can't wait to see what this actually is! It looks a little small to be a beaded bag. Perhaps it's supposed to be a Lady's card holder! You said it was a vintage European pattern. Well, back in the day, when High Society reigned, and young ladies were launched onto society (think the marriage markets of long ago), it was a custom for young ladies and their matrons to call on High Society Matrons, in the hopes of gaining favor. Sometimes, when these women came to call, the Matron of the House would be out, so the visiting ladies would leave calling cards. This way, when the Matron returned, she would know who had visited her in her absence, and she would choose which visits to return. It was customary to carry these calling cards in a Lady's reticule, but they would need some way to keep them contained within. Considering the small size, it's possible this is a calling card holder, which could now be used for a business card holder, with in one's purse! It's just a thought. Okay, I was wrong, it was a purse, but I could see making a business card holder out of that pattern! It could work!

I've done this type of work before. What I did was break the bead off by using small pliers. Just don't break it from the sides. Pinch it from the hole ends, and that way, there is less of a chance of damaging the thread. Also, another tip is to string on more beads than you need. It's better to have some left over then to have to add them later and have a knot in your way. Hopefully, this helps. ❤

I had a thought! When sewing with beaded fabric if you don't want to risk sewing over beads when doing a seam, you crush them with a hammer or pliers. With your joined bead problem (if you ever run into that again) you can just crush them off the string rather than re-thread. They're glass so it should work okay!

By long purse they are probably referring to whats often called a "miser's purse" which is a long thin sausage shape bag with the opening in the middle and a pair of rings around, which are important as closures and tassels at each end, both rings and tassels being mentioned in the pattern. Engineering knits knitted a miser's purse and demonstrated its rather interesting method of working 😊
